A movie production company spends 250 million dollars on a movie, and I am meh... Derek spends time on a cool-as-hell old car, and I am glued to the screen. Thank you sir for making us relive the glory days of these old cars, and letting them tell us their history. Always cool.
@@sparkysarcaderestorations2903 absolutely!!! My mom bought a brand new ‘86 Accord LXi sedan in December of ‘85. I was devastated. I was 12 years old and was looking at the paper brochures. I wanted an ‘86 Civic Si (Red) so bad. I’d get a vasectomy for either of those in pristine condition now.
I'm a firm believer that the Hollywood types make so much noise these days on their social media because they don't get the attention they used to get. People with actual wholesome entertainment such as our man here Derek on platforms such as this have stolen their thunder. People would rather watch a piece of history be dragged from the weeds and wrenched on by a big awesome Sasquatch, than the recycled garbage they have been shoveling in our faces for decades now. It's quite refreshing I must say.
1.6 million views on a CRX revival from a non Honda guy is insane! Mad respect. Derek is unique character who has built a solid brand with his family. Loyal fans will watch anything this channel uploads.
As a Honda enthusiast, I'm sure I'm not the only one who was yelling at the TV, but yeah, I'm so glad to see a guy wrenching on a "JDM" car finally. Never thought I'd see the day!
Personally I had several. My first experience was a 77 civic cvcc with a 79 accord 1751cc motor. It had the 3 barrel carb, with pre combustion chamber...not really a hot rod motor, but twice what the car had originally. I remember looking at the same box of snakes under the hood next to the carburetor and reading a part in the manual that said no, stop, don't. Only time I ever read in a manual where it said don't even try. I still did. Talking to some Honda experts later in life, I learned that even the dealership techs back in the day hated the cvcc 3 barrel. And the fact it even ran was a miracle. Then I Crashed a 91 dx 5 speed 4 door that was my first car... Several beaters later I ended up in a 91 si, 2 door hatch, with a 94 b18a1, and gsr transmission, skunk 2 shifter, tein coilovers..... No wiring. practically stole it for 900$, bought a whole harness from another 91 si, and the entire black interior. Got some rep 17 inch wheels, and the entire poly bushing kit was in the spare tire well. It was the most fun I ever had for that cheap. Nothing like 180hp in a car that came with 80.
@@ryurc3033 I had a Toyota Tercel from that era. It had the vacuum feedback carburetor. Mechanics would commit suicide over the thought of working on them. Mine ran like a fine watch (once I figured out the system)...wish I had it now.
I am a humongous Honda person, I have a 2023 Civic Type R right now. I’ve had lots of Civics, and a CR-V, but never a CR-X. I wanted one desperately when I was in high school, but my dad said that our insurance wouldn’t cover a two-seater. I ended up getting a regular Civic Si instead of a CRX. I have never been able to get a CRX, and I’d given up on finding one, because there weren’t very many to be had, and people never kept them stock, so finding one that hasn’t been modded (often pretty heavily). This is really a good find!! I’m happy that you were able to get it running and home so easily! It was so much fun watching you work with a Honda, because it is so different than what you usually work with. Thank you for doing this video, I really enjoyed it, and I enjoy your regular videos too! It’s fun to see you working with a Japanese car, because that’s the only kind of car that I’ve had in a long time. I just buy the version that’s already made to be the “racing” version (Civic Type R) so it’s already fast (315 HP, it’s the fastest production ICE for 2023 allegedly) and fun to drive, but I’d definitely love to get a CRX if one popped up like yours!
I am a 62 year old man that went to work @ a Honda dealership in 1980. A few years later Honda wanted the highest fuel milage in the US and the CRX HF did it. They spent a lot of money researching which tire had the least amount of rolling resistance, I think it was a Bridgestone. The alternator would charge the most on deceleration. Fuel cut offs were added to cut fuel from being pulled during deceleration along with many other pre computer vacuum operated devices. It only has one compression ring on the pistons to cut down on friction! The A/C compressor was specifically designed for that car. We had a police helicopter pilot that claimed he got 73MPG on his. Watching you work on it brought back a lot of memories. By the way, the door lock will work when you pull the handle out @ the same time. I watch all of your videos. I'm glad you got it going. Did you notice the carburetor was a three barrel? It has a cvcc head on it.
I had an '86 Honda "Integra" (before it was sold under Acura) EFI...loved that car. Door locking was the same way. Felt like a magic carpet on the road.
Yep, The CVCC heads have that weird pre-combusion chamber in the heads with it's own mini valve and rocker. They look like a 16 valve head when you pull the valve cover but the heads only have 12 obvious valves when you look at the block side of the head. Really neat stuff for the time.
@@randallfetty2991 When Honda came out with Acura the dealership I worked for sent me to Acura school north of Atlanta. I was in the very first class and for two days we had no cars, then finally they arrived. Everything had disc brakes and fuel injection. I got spoiled very fast.
No way. He actually did a Honda. I can't believe it but I am 100% here for it! I put in a lot of hours helpinh my buddy fix his same gen crx. You picked a relatively simple one
Derek, I just want to start by saying thank you for making this video. The range of emotions it took me thru is simply unforgettable. My first car when I turned 16 was a 1986 Honda CRX HF in Capital Blue. It had 230,000+ miles and I bought it from my best friends father for $650. We spent the next 9 months fixing various things, driving to high school and around town. I learned to drive stick in it. Learned the start of my automotive knowledge from that car, leading to Senior Master Ford certifications. When I sold the car, it was not my choice. My father wanted it gone for safety concerns (understandable) and was replaced with a 2007 Honda Civic. I saw the CRX posted not even 2 weeks later with a blown engine, and the next owner had sent it to the scrap yard. I bawled my eyes out when I heard. It broke my heart. If you ever have the desire to sell this CRX, please get in contact with me and I will make it happen. These cars will always hold a special place in my heart until the day I die. Thank you for posting this journey and everything you do. -Asheton P.
@@ashetonp3840 Thats unreal. These 80’s Hondas were indestructible if cared for. Trash if not. I’m so sorry for your loss. I have a coworker with a 2012 Civic, and after hearing talk about my experiences with many, many, many Hondas over the years she actually wants to GIVE me hers. I love vintage Hondas. Much like their motorcycles, they are true legends. No pun intended.
Mine was a 69 Datsun 510. It pains me to not have it still. And trying to replace it at 20000 hurts even more. At that price I might as well buy a 66-67 Chevy 2 lol. The car I actually wanted as my first car. The 510 will always be near and dear. The car guy/girl world is alive and well in all. Stay as you are my friend. You have came a long way. God Bless you and your family.
One of my mentors when I was autocrossing in the 80s drove a CRX Si. I learned to truly drive a vehicle in that car. I will always have an affinity for the little coupes. Great vid. Love seeing Tavarish on your channel! Great crossover!
You are so right about these cars and their capabilities Autocrossing. I worked at a foreign auto parts store in the late 80's when I first got into the car business and a few coworkers were heavily involved.I went to many events in NY and CT and CRX,Civic and the old 240,260 Z's usually had the best times. Your comment brought back good memories thanks
@@ViceGripGarage We watch you from the other side of the ocean Europe, you, Tavarish, Jack and plenty others that are so inspiring.. we like what all you guys did so far man.. Shout out to all hard working folk back there.. Big Love !!!
A friend of mine had one while I was in USMC back in 1997..... He let me borrow it a few times...they are so much fun to zip around in.. like driving a go cart..... Either way... another great video... thank you for all you and your family do!! Appreciate you!
My two cents on what to do with this car is this. Clean it up, and make it shine again. Fix its little bumps and bruises. Take the time to try to put the motor back to original, then tune to run the way it was built to run. Not all cars need to be hot rods or high performance. Some cars are just meant to be cars. Then keep it and drive it yourself. The knowledge of the previous owners' love for the car makes it special.
Perfect for one of his kids! Not much power…very efficient. Looks cool as hell!!!! That’s all you need right? When I was in high school there was a fellow I didn’t know, but he had a mid-80’s sliver Camaro Berlinetta with 2.8 V6. And somehow he got sponsored by Orion audio. Might be wrong, but I believe he had 4 Orion 12’s on Orion amps. That car hit like MF’er. It was a V6 3spd auto, so quite slow, but the vibrations could give a young girl an orgasm! In my day, that’s a good start.
exactly. keeping it stock l is actually far more desireable if or when derek decides to sell it,too. people who mod old hondas actually prefer unmodded stock cars because its easier for them to do what they want to do to it and not fix somebody else's screwed up mods or to get their own to bolt up and work, and people who are looking for a cheap grocery getters actually prefer likewise because they know its far more likely been used as transport rather than thrashed on. plus as derek found out on the way home-they are actually hard to find now and still popular, so that drives the desirability to have a stock one right up.
@ everyone should care. We have a finite amount of fuel. Nonetheless that factory carb was a wonder of engineering at the time. The CVCC engine was truly revolutionary, but they are hard to maintain. I love the OG, but the Weber is the way to go.
The drivers door lock probably DOES work. On older Hondas, you have to hold the inside door handle OUT, THEN hit the lock. They did that to prevent the driver from accidentally locking themself out of the car. Locking the car was meant to be very intentional. Hold door handle, hit lock. I miss my 84 CRX. That thing averaged 55 miles per gallon with a high school kid driving it like he stole it back in the 90's when gas was 89 cents a gallon. *sigh*
I had an 84' SI, was so rusted I don't think anything was holding the rear suspension in anymore. LOVED that car though. Best manual transmission I ever owned.
I drove a 91 Si 18 hours straight from Norcal to Phoenix loaded completely full with all my stuff and still got 41 mpg at an average speed of probably 80-85 MPH
You were obviously born.......too late. I got one for $100 One of my brothers got 2 for $500 Another one of my buddies copped one for $300.............. This was over 25yrs ago though 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Always a good time watching Derek. When I was 19, I bought a used '84 CRX for $600, due to blown head gasket. My dad and I did the repair. Good god, the vacuum hoses were such a nightmare. I was used to working on my '65 F100. I was impressed that Derek was able to delete all that crap and make it work. The car was fun to drive and I got 45 mpg. It was a perfect car for my younger years to ride with my girlfriend and dog.
I bought a CRX new in 1984. Walking past the Honda dealer in downtown Seattle, there was a blue one - the first one they'd gotten. I had to have it. IT WAS A HOOT! Great fun to drive AND my very worst tank of gas was 39 MPG (that was important because the tank only held 8.1 gallons). On a drive from Seattle to Eugene, Oregon, I tried for a record - coasting down hills and such - and got 61 MILES PER GALLON! That was 40 years ago. Why aren't cars getting 150 MPG now? Derek - this video was very nostalgic for me - Thank You!
You know there would be a HUGE market in the US for a simple bare-bones reliable car at an affordable price. But the government says NO! Check out the Toyota IMV. They are 10-12k brand new but cannot be sold here.
@jeffsgarage8414 Yugo wasn't great, chevette wasn't either.. the corolla and civic were basic, but now are too big for their britches. Too many regulations to get past nowadays to do anything simply. Shoot, even to get a simple vehicle. A Kei truck is 8-30k! I'm glad we don't have to look forward to Lada type simplicity though.
All I have to say is the love that the previous owner had for his honda, is just incredible, logging in every gas stop is just unreal. Sadly this car had a real best friend that parted away, thank god for this car landed on Vice Grip hands.
Before I even clicked on the video I thought "Wait till he lays his peepers on the vacuum lines". I watched my neighbor in 1994 rebuild one of these. He had a hell of a time with the vacuum system. Nightmare. These things get fantastic gas mileage. Honda is my favorite car maker.
We bought a 1987 CRX HF new, drove it for 13 years. Extremely reliable, and fun to drive. My wife's favorite car ever. We routinely got 62 mpg on the highway and low 50s in the city. Going up a steep hill, it was advisable to turn off the air conditioner to maintain adequate power. Thanks for working on this one. It brings back some good memories.
"Do you want to work in an air conditioned shop?" "That seems weird" Moments like that is why i watch this channel. Thank you for being the realest car guy on RUclips Derek!!!
im in Canada, the civic crx are still hugely popular and sell instantly... cheap, run forever, sporty and can be customized. i owned a regular civic for 14 years, it never broke down a single time. flat tires twice was it. had to resolder the connections on the DRL/ head light switch once but did that myself.. plenty of youtube videos on it. fantastic cars.
As a Honda guy. This is the best gift a RUclipsr has ever given. I love all cars Hondas are where I grew up. Hopefully I can move on to domestics soon. But I love watching everyone build their classic domestics. I hope one day to. For now. I’ll stick to these slow mpg getters!
I grew up working on Honda's. They're like Legos for adults. I really enjoyed watching him learn from his struggles on these tiny imports. Really hits home for me. Best episode in awhile!
My neighbor bought his son a brand new Honda sedan of some sort. First thing the kid did was turn it into a clown car. Super wide tires slanted at a 45 degree angle and lowered so they're buried in the fenders. All four fenders are kinked and bent and the bottom of the front bumper is torn up. So he basically turned a new car into street junk. Probably handles like junk, rides like junk and looks like junk.
Should've added. And the vechicle with thee above mentioned accessorieyysss are only allowed to drive on city or suburban streets between 02:00 and 04:00 and only at full throttle 😂. It's a vtec law you know
I hope that the owner that passed away was looking down on you while you worked on the old girl an smiled knowing it would be taken care of. That dude was an absolute legend with how well he kept up with the car over the years and documenting everything
I had a 1986 Honda CRX the best car I have ever owned. Drove 1100 miles from my home driveway to the army basic @ ft Carson. 1100 mile cost me about $60.00 in fuel .
I have to admit, I'm loving the fact you dipped into a foreign car (not just in country but in design) to you. I really enjoyed this and even sat and watched it with my 2 year old... and he NEVER lets us watch anything on TV but he loved watching this with me. Thanks so much, Derek.
I bought one of those new. I had an extremely long commute (71 miles one way) and those were advertised to get 50 miles per gallon. It did, every time. I laughed when I saw the owner of yours was logging his fill-ups. I did too. The math always brought a smile.
Never had one of these but my first car was an '81 Datsun 310 GX and it got crazy good gas mileage as well. Nothing like these did but compared to the '86 Mustang Street rod we built and other V8 domestic vehicles around at the time, 30-40 mpg was quite impressive!
I don't get the hate on a guy doing a rescue of an old Honda. I respect all cars for what they are, I've built many hot rods with my dad growing up, have owned many many different brands and liked em all for their own reasons!
I don’t see any hate this vid. I’m a Honda guy through and through. It was fantastic watching you wrench on this. You got lucky people have hung themselves chasing after a vacuum issue with this motor!
I've had two CRX's. Both of them were first gens, both SI's and a lot of fun, we swapped an H22A into one with a lot of work to be able to use the VTEC that the H22 has. and a ZC swap on the other. man the nostalgia of these little cars! I would love to own that little HF you got there.
That's awesome, I've been into old Acuras and Hondas for 25 years. When it comes to the driver door lock, you need to pull on the interior door handle and then flip the lock. It's a safety feature so that you don't lock your keys in your car by being sure of what you're doing with that extra step.
@@waynerohde1036Nice. Now I'm trying to remember how my 84 Volvo would lock lol but back to Hondas, I think my 2001 Civic needs the interior handle pulled to manually lock it with the door open but I always use the key. I know I have to do the handle pull thing for my '89 and '94 integras.
My first car was an 89 crx hf I put 680,000 miles and was still running years later! A lot of clutches and cv axles and timing belts done by myself. Awesome first car except insurance cost me a lot!!!
Long time subscriber from Ireland 🇮🇪 here. All my project are JDM , there’s a massive scene here for them. I’ve been on the couch fed up for a week with a slipped disc in my back. This upload has uplifted my spirits massively. I absolutely love this channel and everything you and your family stands for. Big love and luck 🍀
Great car. Really really great cars. debatably the beginning of the golden years for hondas! I have the same year civic and its strikingly similar to that CRX, most reliable car I ever owned AND the car I beat on the most. I think you should just clean it up, give it the OEM+ modification treatment and make it a real going to town gas sipper rig.
I bought an 87 that the whole top end and all the vacuum lines were taken off prior to me buying the car about 5 years ago I haven't been motivated to work on it because the vacuum lines intimidate me. Having this video to use as a reference for where alot of stuff brackets and goes is a GODSEND
I know the struggle, have a 1990 carbureted engine (4e-f Toyota) and good god it's a nightmare in there, and there is not a SINGLE picture of the vacuum diagram online, ANYWHERE. Prove me wrong anyone, this engine is an absolute ghost to history. Late model carburated engines are reliable but MY GOD you'd better not even look at the vacuum lines 😂

I don't like these little front wheel drive cars much, but as far as a transportation device, they do it well. Fuel efficient and reliable. My daughter owns a couple. Bit of a nightmare to work, though. I changed a starter motor a few weeks ago. I couldn't even see it. just feel it.
It was basic transportation and it was easy to make your own. I had a 1988 Honda Civic hatchback with a 4 speed, no a/c, no power anything! But I'd buy it in a heartbeat if I found it again. Those were the cars we wanted before the auto industry lost sight of what matters.
I’m SO STOKED to see you saving a Honda! A lot of us guys grew up with tiny Japanese cars, which we grew to absolutely love. Great to see you applying your skill to something new. Cars is cars! But thank you, thank you, thank you.
Over a million views in just one day! Good job Derek! Shine it up, keep it orginal (maybe keep the new carb as it looks awesome) and drive it. Perfect parts getter. Plus putting smiles on fellas faces seeing one of these things alive and well will never get old.
Hi Derick, enjoyed this video. I’m 64 years old and all muscle cars back when I was a kid. Fast-forward my son when he started driving, it was all about the JDM life. He taught me that the Japanese cars are well engineered just like some of the American cars you can interchange motors transmissions without having to cut or modify. It’s like they’re all interchangeable😅. Anyway, my wife has a 350 Z, I drive a Mazda Miata 1999, Integra 1994 four-door Integra 1994 two door Mitsubishi eclipse and one dodge Durango in our family, big fan for years, keep them coming y’all.❤🇺🇸🔧🛠️👏🏽
Hahah you sound like my dad, he was a muscle head all his life and I went and bought a EK Honda civic against his wishes. now he’s hooked on the jap cars and just bought a civic for himself
So happy to see this. I rebuilt that carburetor on an 84 civic wagon in 1997. I recorded taking it apart with my vhs camera and labeled every vacuum line.
A lot of these older lawnmowers will mechanically disable the driver door lock when the door is open. You can bypass this measure by pulling one of the door handles as you lock the door.
FYI - Honda hoods have 2 prop rod holes. The "service" position hole is down near the hood hinge on the drivers side and allows the hood to be fully open. That would make working on this much easier on your head and back!
Love the CRX, I’m a American car guy at heart, but I have a huge love for late 80’s, 90’s and early 2000’s Japanese cars. Super entertaining video Derek.
I love that you worked on this. It brings me back to my first attempted revival: my sister's '81 Accord. It went bad on her in downtown KC at 130k and I dragged it back to the farm behind a '91 Ranger. I didn't know what Tavarish knew, that if your timing belt goes, the engine is gone. I carefully pulled everything apart and installed a new timing belt. I cleaned the carburetor, installed new plugs and wires, and got it back together. I was ready to be a hero and.... nothing. It never occurred to me that Honda would do this. Everything else on that rig was so well-built that it never occurred to me that a belt going would wreck the whole engine.
My friend and I drove around in her mom's CRX on graduation day 1987. And you are wearing the same shirt I got from you. So much awesome! Thanks, from my happy old heart!
We love JDM! I’m a Subaru specialist mechanic and I drive a wrx so I definitely love JDM, but I’ve been watching you since 2020 and one time during your live q&a someone asked if you would ever work on Japanese and you said nope! But I never lost hope and have been waiting for this episode for a long time, love watching you work on old American icons but this is hitting a special place in my heart! Thank you for reviving the CRX❤️🔥
Well loved this video. As a child of the 80's it hit home. As for what to do with it. I'd say restore it. I did a quick Googles and these cars in really good shape and original are going for just north of 20k in the few instances they are listed for sale.
The HE was the "high efficiency" version of the CRX. The rear drums are aluminum and sought after in road racing. I ran an 88 CRX-Si for 5 years road racing in prepared class. The entire brake system was swapped with a first gen Acura Integra, making it all disk and increasing the front caliper size, and pad size. To reduce understeer, remove the front sway bar completely. I had all the parts to replace the D series engine with a "poor man's type R" using an Integra GSR bottom end and a JDM VTEC 1.6L DOHC head using Hasport mounts. These were great cars and it's great to see this one saved.
Derek, thanks so much for this video! The first car I fell in love with was an 89 CRX SI, I was 10 years old when my aunt bought it new. I ask to buy it from her the first day I saw it. Fast forward 12 years and I got my chance she sold it to me. The Honda CRX started my love for anything with wheels and a motor.
@@ViceGripGarage You could film yourself refinishing a kitchen table and I would still watch. You do a good job of walking us through the process while cracking jokes. Subaru next? We're a Subaru family and I do a lot of back yard wrenching on Subarus.
I’d definitely clean it up keep it stock fix up the clutch and all the other stuff and paint it white… make it the VGG parts runner. People will love these l cars forever and ever
I had a 1986 Accord hatchback that had a lot of the same everything as this car. It served me over 250,000 miles and I sold it still running great. It made me want to pick one up for fun. Trouble is, those cars are running $7500-$14,000 now. Insane. I sold mine for $500. Great episode. Glad to see you go off the beaten interstate on a great Japanese car
Thanks for saving this CRX and taking me down memory lane. I owned the exact same car( white '86 HF 5 spd) for a few years in the mid 90s. It's a good thing that the Weber carb worked because Honda was experimenting with a computer controlled carburetor on that car and it was very temperamental. The car was fun to drive, easy to park and it was so light that I could push start it myself when the starter was starting to fail. I think 42 MPG was the highest I ever got. I had to give up on it after driving it cross country for my move to California. It needed a head gasket and at the time, California was charging $700 to register out of state vehicles.
In 1993, had this exact car & color, it was an 85 (Headlights were recessed), and got around 45 mpg on highway. Traded for a set of golf clubs, my buddy's sister blew the head gasket running it out of coolent. Never forget testing compression and getting a ectoplasm soaked tip. Still have the clubs
Derek in case the lock on the driver door seems not to work, if I recall, it was a safety feature of Honda where you needed to pull the door latch as if to open the door and then you can lock it. It’s been a while since I had a CRX, but I believe that was how it worked. Great video! Glad you got that little Honda back on the road. Really cool to see your process.
Awesome! I thought I remembered it. I had a 85 CRX Si and I seemed to remember it even after all these years. I haven’t had that car in over 30 years. Funny how you remember stuff like that.
I have a 1988 CRX manual. Always starts up, is surprisingly roomy, and is a great car. It is used for trips to town and it is a lot of fun to roll through the gears😊. The nostalgia of old Hondas makes me smile.
I am a diehard American muscle guy but I have a crx and I love mine. They're such fun cars to drive. They handle awesome. Feels like you're driving a go cart. Your's is in great shape. Usually the fenders are broke because they're made of plastic. Take care that car. You don't see them around much anymore
I am too...I have a C5 Corvette and a 91 DX hatchback that I've had for 24 years. It wasn't even a hard transition to the Vette because I've been a couple of inches from the ground already for so long 😂
All the hate for the hatch , man , I'd LOVE every dingle bit of that car and I'd leave it 100% oem and keep it as is.. what a survivor that thing is , absolutely beautiful
I had a ‘90 model 3 door hatch long wheel base with a 4 speed and AC, no other options. It was fuel injected and got 50mpg or better no matter what! I mean flat out 90 mph with the AC on with 4 dudes in it, still 50 mpg! Incredible machine!
My buddy, RIP, had a 84 Civic. We spent a lot of time working on that POS, but all those vacuum lines are for polution control so they did not have to go to fuel injection. His next vehicle was a Ford.
The old Honda Crx is definitely a worthy vehicle. Hondas history in America goes back a good ways and the old imports played a part in my early years and love of cars. I think a lot of people may feel the same.
At first they were a joke with their small tires and motorcycle engine?? In time they improved to be a solid car! They helped us get thru the so called fuel shortages. Were into E cars now but this was the Model T in it's time!!
Also as a Honda enthusiast, this is an awesome find! I had a 92 Acura Integra, a 92 Honda Civic sedan that I engine swapped, a 1989 Honda CRX DX that I engine swapped, a 1997 Honda Civic coupe that I engine swapped and HEAVILY modified with 709 wheel horsepower, a 1986 Honda Prelude 2.0Si (the first year for fuel injection and my car was Car and Driver magazine's actual test vehicle), a 1991 Honda Prelude 2.0Si a 2001 Honda Accord V6 sedan that I engine swapped and turbocharged, a 2006 Acura TL that I manual swapped and turbocharged, and I also had a 1987 Honda CRX Si. I have always loved Hondas.
I have a 2001 prelude SiR type S. I only drive it in the summer here in Canada. I’m the only owner. Got it for my 16th birthday in 2002. It’s a 5 speed to.
Hi Derek! Great to see a Honda on your channel! I had a 1990 CRX HF and it got over 50mpg with no hybrid assist! Very fun car to drive. To lock the driver door when it's open, you must pull out the chrome handle before you can lock it. That's a safety to keep you from locking your keys in the car, as it was intended to be locked with the key from the outside. Put a timing belt and water pump on it soon, it's been chilling for 16 years. They recommend a 100k swap under normal conditions. It is an interference motor tho, so don't wait too long. Enjoy your channel very much. Best wishes to you and the family!!
I loved the CRX. My buddy and I used to bomb around town in this thing and loved every minute. It really winds out on the shifter and is a blast in the corners. I would kill for the CRX. You should doll her up and raffle her off. I might enter that raffle.
A good friend from high school was the first one of our group of friends to buy a really nice new car, he bought I think a 88 or 89 CRX. We were all blown away riding in that thing, it was like it was on rails, handled so well. He passed away way too young, in his late 20s. I've always loved these cars, thanks for doing this one Derek, brings me back to my running around days.
I had an 86 CRX HF back in the late 90s in Black on Grey..It was my first Honda and I Loved that car!! It was very Zippy for such low horse power and even would Burn Rubber if you were not careful with the Throttle! I could carry so much in the Hatch so it was an all around great little car that got pretty spectacular gas millage..
I had a b series in a 1990. Probably like 150 horsepower but so much fun. I smoked a few cars that even surprised me. It was 2003 and back in those days 14 seconds was a fast street car.
Man like 20 yrs ago my cuz had one of these and when I tell u he was going 100 miles on the highway I never seen a car have the balls this little car has great car low on gas ⛽ just small but mighty ❤❤❤
My first field car was a 78 Corolla 4 door 5 speed, rear wheel drive, was incredible, went awesome in snow with a backseat of firewood,I used it do my chores
Wow that's a wicked clean example. I don't mind most cars. Big, small, domestic, foreign, truck or a car . As long as they are fun and have a personality is all that matters to me.
I had one in high school in the early 90s with a full exhaust ,I loved that thing . My condolences to that man’s family ,sorry for your loss . I’m sure they’ll be happy to see this car getting some love .
My friend had one in high school and remembered we had to push start it when the alternator went out in it. It's not hard to do with just two people. The gas mileage on that thing was phenomenal back in the 90s.
3:00:40 the 85 celica with a 22re motor is the same way. I have an 88 turbo targa top supra in my garage i wont part with but its been parked since 2001 It runs and drives but needs to love to start it up the gas in its 24 years old. The oil in the pan is fresh in 2001. I parked it. Just over 150k miles on it 5 speed.
So cool! It might not be a "classic" in some people's eyes, but it's worth saving! Japanese cars approach performance from a different place. I appreciate all things with an engine. This CRX is 8 years older than my '77 Camaro was, when I bought it in high school. It's held up well.
Glad to see you taking care of this classic. People loved these when they came out. So light and efficient with really good handling. After having owned an '80's era Honda for 10 years, It's funny to watch you checking this out. Honda has a different way of doing things than American cars. For example, the driver's side orange lock button won't work unless you pull the handle at the same time. And the seats won't flip unless you pull on the lever alongside the seat cushion.Good luck! You'll figure it out the way you always do.
I have pulled a few of these apart over the years. Guessed a few issues at the beginning that you'd come across and even mentioned the brake light would clap out to my sister before it came up on the video, the little rubber thing got pushed through the hole by the switch, I have found in a pinch finding a rubber blanking grommet somewhere in the engine bay or the boot will work if you get stuck in the middle of nowhere and you don't want a flat battery. If anyone gets stuck when looking for service manuals just look up Honda Civic around the same year and you'll find what you are looking for. Basically the CRX is a Civic from the firewall forwards. One of my mates dropped his Ballade Sports off a 4 point car lift and bent the nose upwards so he found a civic from that era and unstitched the nose from the firewall and welded it back together. What you want is the ZC brown top and the bonnet with the bump so it will fit in the engine bay and ditch all the smog related vacuum hoses like you did to that one, stock conrods are only good to about 220HP as my mate found out one night. I ended up with the idea of squeezing in a supercharger off of a Toyota Levin/MR2 into the engine bay with a bit of playing around. Or go the other way a few friends have and throw a B16 or larger and go VTEC. I know way to much about 83 to 87 Honda Civics/CRXs.
What a cool back story. It makes it that much cooler knowing the previous owner really valued and cared for that vehicle. I had a ‘84 four-door Honda civic hatchback in high school. Mom drove it forever then my sister then me. It was chick repellent but was a great vehicle and reliable! I remember borrowing some treys from Taco Bell, slipping those puppies under the rear tires and doing donuts in the parking lot.
Pulling at my heart strings on this one Derrick. Went from a 71' Pontiac GT-37, to a 71 GMC Sprint in high school, to a '94 CRX 1.3 then to a 88' CRX Si in College. Loved those little cars!!!
Wow shows u know Jack bout a crx no such thing as a 94 crx guy crx body stopped in 91' after that year they made a del sol.....they didnt resurrect to the crz until fairly recent i have a 88 and a 91 si lol 😂 its ok u must have had short strings
Derek, just wanted to reach out as a fairly new viewer, that I absolutely love your commitment to these cars, and your commitment to sharing your knowledge and how to in each and every video you create. Much love from one passionate car guy to another! Hope to shake your hand one day in appreciation!
I had a CRX back in the day as a daily driver and really enjoyed it. I put a monster music amplication box in the back to impress all the fellers & fellerettes.
This is Scott from Los Angeles. We had a 1986 Honda CRX HF with the stick shift. It got 52 miles to the gallon with a 3 barrel carburetor! It was the 1500cc. I am a high performance guy! I got to say that It was a zippy little car that got us everywhere! We used to take it up to Mammoth Mountain in the Sierra Nevada Mountains to go skiing with all our stuff! No problem!
As someone who dailies a Honda crapbox, I'm surprised to see this on your channel. You've got me laughing so much watching you try to work on the car. Loving it!
Always wanted one and never got one! Congrats on success with something a little different. I dig it. I'd patch her up, clean her up, maybe make the interior a bit nicer and call it good to go. Move it along to someone who can use it.
Anyone who has owned a CRX knows how special they are. I also got a free CRX (90 CRX Si) back in the day and it's one of the cars I regret letting go. Especially now since they are harder to come by and $$$ now.
The interior door lock works. It just keeps you from locking the door then closing it. It's a feature to help prevent you from locking your keys in the car. If you pull on the door opener handle inside it will let you lock the door from inside.
I drove an 87 CRX Si back that I bought used back in 1991. I had sold an 85 Ford Escort. The quality differences between the two cars were absolutely SHOCKING, hell... the Escort had a blown head gasket by 5 years and 40K miles. This is EXACTLY why Hondas were the cars of GenX from 1985 (CRX's and NSX) to 2005 (S2000). This is the reason I have owned over 20 Hondas/Acuras in my life.
A movie production company spends 250 million dollars on a movie, and I am meh... Derek spends time on a cool-as-hell old car, and I am glued to the screen. Thank you sir for making us relive the glory days of these old cars, and letting them tell us their history. Always cool.
Thanks so much!!
Angel Studios has been putting out some really good movies.
RUclips hasn't suggested I watch this, or any VGG video in half a year, despite being subscribed for years.
1.6 million views on a CRX revival from a non Honda guy is insane! Mad respect. Derek is unique character who has built a solid brand with his family. Loyal fans will watch anything this channel uploads.
Can you imagine if that was a ‘94-‘95 Benz S500/S600 W140 ? :)))))))
1.9 just 21 hours later…
True.
Derek now appealing to our oriental viewers.
2.1 Million by now...
As a Honda enthusiast, I'm sure I'm not the only one who was yelling at the TV, but yeah, I'm so glad to see a guy wrenching on a "JDM" car finally. Never thought I'd see the day!
Guys gotta mix it up sometimes
If there were ever a car That I am not worried about it is this one lol. Worried about making it that is.
@@ViceGripGarage my ND brother you have opened a new door of followers! keep these coming!!!!
Those Keihin 3 barrels were an oddity. Also manual choke (at least they were here in Canada)
Very COOL !!!!
No way. He actually did a Honda. I can't believe it but I am 100% here for it! I put in a lot of hours helpinh my buddy fix his same gen crx. You picked a relatively simple one
"I can't believe it but I am LOOKIN RIGHT AT IT"
@@Curtislow2 You just barely beat me to that quote 🤣
Got to believe what your peepers seeing...
Thats the simple one?
I’d have given both my nuts for that car! Of course I’m 50 and don’t use them much these days, so no big loss!

Derek. Durocher. Druk.
I get it…mine was a 78’ Volkswagen diesel rabbit…$875….the only car I’ve really ever missed!

ALREADY!!! I work so early during the week, it doesn’t really make for a good Friday night. But I’ll take an awesome Saturday morning in trade!
Disagree on the carb--the Weber is way cooler! All those 80s vacuum lines and junk maybe got that car to 50mpg, but who really cares about that now?
@ everyone should care. We have a finite amount of fuel. Nonetheless that factory carb was a wonder of engineering at the time. The CVCC engine was truly revolutionary, but they are hard to maintain. I love the OG, but the Weber is the way to go.
I know a guy who will give you $12k cash now for it as is. Then donate that $12k to something good.
@@nerfo2 toyotas and Nissan as well.

I owned a '91 CRX DX for 21 years. 40 mpg. I loved that car. Drove it from Florida to Alaska and back.
Very cool thanks for sharing. It's probably because car manufacturers are in bed with gasoline/oil corporations
@@crhernimantheres plenty of bare bones cars that have tried here in the us, and no there wasnt a market lol
It’s because of safety standards cars have to be heavier nowadays

Probably handles like junk, rides like junk and looks like junk.
lol yup that was a great dig at the ricers more loud and proud then fast and reliable

I hope that the owner that passed away was looking down on you while you worked on the old girl an smiled knowing it would be taken care of. That dude was an absolute legend with how well he kept up with the car over the years and documenting everything
As I was watching Derek the same thought occurred to me as well.....
For sure no other way this could go down
He was looking down cringing at him butchering the original carburetor and vacuum lines 😂

I bought one of those new. I had an extremely long commute (71 miles one way) and those were advertised to get 50 miles per gallon. It did, every time. I laughed when I saw the owner of yours was logging his fill-ups. I did too. The math always brought a smile.
I had one too. The thing was a go kart.
Amen
I’ve seen ZERO comments hating on him for doing a Honda 😂 😂
Literally zero
stop it jesse smollett.
Better get used to it. 55mpg makes it a perfect parts getter when the round trip to the store is 55 miles
My old VW Quantum coupe would only lock the drivers door with the key
@@waynerohde1036Nice. Now I'm trying to remember how my 84 Volvo would lock lol but back to Hondas, I think my 2001 Civic needs the interior handle pulled to manually lock it with the door open but I always use the key. I know I have to do the handle pull thing for my '89 and '94 integras.
Instant lightbulb going off above my head..I remember that in my old '84CRX ..
My first car was an 89 crx hf I put 680,000 miles and was still running years later! A lot of clutches and cv axles and timing belts done by myself. Awesome first car except insurance cost me a lot!!!

I bought a factory service manual for my car to get a vaccum diagram maybe try to find one for yours @Sam-go3mb
A man gonna find that info in a book if he looked in the right one, cause that’s how things were done back then.

I don't like these little front wheel drive cars much, but as far as a transportation device, they do it well. Fuel efficient and reliable. My daughter owns a couple. Bit of a nightmare to work, though. I changed a starter motor a few weeks ago. I couldn't even see it. just feel it.
💯
40 years old and carbureted. Fits the channel perfectly.

I had one back in the day, such good gas mileage. wanna say it was around 45 a gallon
So happy to see this. I rebuilt that carburetor on an 84 civic wagon in 1997. I recorded taking it apart with my vhs camera and labeled every vacuum line.
You're gonna love that thing. They're like a go cart. So much fun to drive and pretty peppy because they weigh nothing.
NGL I want to buy a CRX 5 speed. Those are so GD fun

The crank bolt is generally accessible in the tire tub on rice cooker cars like this.

These were great cars and it's great to see this one saved.
i had a 88 si as well!
Actually, it’s HF, not HE. If you rewatch the video, you’ll see. Also, it stands for ‘High Fuel economy’
Ah... We used to call that combo the b17c or frankenhonda
Those HF CRXs were good for close to 50mpg. Almost bought one new when working at the Honda dealer in mid 80s

Derek, thanks so much for this video! The first car I fell in love with was an 89 CRX SI, I was 10 years old when my aunt bought it new. I ask to buy it from her the first day I saw it. i’ve been restoring a 1987 crx si over the past year! sat for nearly 25 years. so cool seeing one on the channel.
That is also how my 2003 Civic was

This is one of those cars that is rare rare when everything is OEM stock - id say keep it original as much possible

They helped us get thru the so
called fuel shortages. Were into E cars now but this was the Model T

I have always loved Hondas.

I have an 88 turbo targa top supra in my garage i wont part with but its been parked since 2001
It runs and drives but needs to love to start it up the gas in its 24 years old.
