Having worked in a bodyshop, this is an extremely well done step-by-step process for this repair! What's even better is that it's done with everything you can pick up at your local automotive shop over the counter. Because we had to take cleanliness to the next level to avoid customer complaints / re-dos at the bodyshop, I would also recommend painting the wheels on a cleaner surface, lessens the chance of dirt/dust particles flying up on to your work. Also, before the clear coat process, you could do a quick pat down with a Tack Cloth to make sure surface is clean as can be before you seal it in with the clear coat.
Who on earth paints their wheels???, iv'e painted plenty of rims over the years, however iv'e never painted my rims and tires together!. You do realize that a rim is not a wheel don't you, therefore when you state "painting the wheels on a cleaner surface" what are you actually referring to???
@@barrybarry5803 He's painting the wheel in an area that isn't free of debry or clean (11:00). As great as this video is, I thought the same thing immediately because a professional would never paint on bare ground, even with something under the wheel.
Hey Chris, awesome video. My son's mother has been driving around in an otherwise perfect town and country for years but for her corroded, scratched and oxidized rims that were so bad the clearcoat was flaking away, foggy and trapping dirt and brake dust....about 6 hours of stripping, sanding, primer, paint and 2K clear and she is blown away by how much she loves looking at her van again.... Thanks man, put a huge smile on my face!
Just a word of warning, I work at a place put tires on rims, don't try to build up too much of that bondo on the lip of the rim. Especially if you intend on using lower profile tires, sometimes the bar we use to lift the bead off the rim can require some pressure and I wouldn't doubt that it could crack some off if you try to rebuild too much of the lip. Some shops may have different, more precise tools, but just thought I'd put it out there is all.
Why not just flip the rim so the inside is facing up? The tire only goes in from one side or the other so why scratch the finished side when you can scrape the side nobody sees.

Forgot to mention that when painting the back of the wheels, do not paint the mounting surface that contacts the hub. Doing that will create an uneven contact between the wheels and hub, that will cause vibrations. Awesome video.
@@charliewilliamssucks890 Anything that prevents paint from sticking there is fine. Like painters tape for an example. Remember to remove the tape and clean all the leftover glue from the tape after painting. Or you can just sand the paint away afterwards like the guy before me said.
Nonsense. If painted evenly the shim distance would be identical to the machined surface. Also, rattle can paint is extremely thin once the solvents flash off. The paint is typically only 0.005" in thickness which is roughly the thickness of human hair or a sheet of paper. Plus the torque generated by lug nuts threads will be in the thousands of pounds per square inch on the wheel face which will squish the fresh paint evenly. I own a Metrology and calibration laboratory where we calibrate torque wrench's, coating thickness gages, gage blocks to the millionths of an inch, etc. and measure automotive aerospace and medical parts daily on robotic Coordinate Measuring Machines. Ive been in hundreds of manufacturing facilities of all kinds and seen many processes. The thickness of rattle can paint does not surpass the dimensional runout tolerance of OEM and aftermarket wheels, let alone the machining tolerances of brake rotors and drums that they are mounted too. There is way more runout on those parts than you would ever get with a layer or 2 of rattle can spray paint.

You don't put the weight back on, when the wheel gets mounted on a tire, it gets balanced(new weights are added) there. They also put in a new valve stem too.
+Braa Issa The valve is replaced at the tire shop. Also, they will have to rebalance the wheel as you have added material, so it would need different weights. This is also something you get done at most tire shops.
You want to have a new weight put on in another area AFTER they put the tire on, if you put the weight back on it more than likely won't be in the right spot. The whole reason the weights are there is to balance the wheel and the only way to get it accurate is to use a machine after putting a tire on the rim. The same place that puts the tire on should also fill it with air.
Did anyone have any specific issues trying this with tires still on the wheel? (besides covering up the tire before paint with index cards/trash bags/etc...) Also, any good substitutes for cleaning with rubbing alcohol? (denatured alcohol, brake cleaner, more soapy wooder)?
@@chrisfix Thanks for replying to an older video, and I figured as much. I have a couple spots right up against the lip though, but I think using a plastic trim tool may help form the edge.

also should remind people to ask for the stick on wheel weights instead of the clip on ones that can chip the edge of the rim when using bondo repair when getting tires balanced
Great tip! I hope Chris sees it.
Why can't I upvote comments on android RUclips?
They could place the clip ons on the inside of the wheel as well
How Does tris balance clip work?
Because Android.
+Kim Jong-Il yes you can.
I’m only 3 mins into this video and this guy is NICE w it. Getting straight to the point, and everything is understood and comprehensive. I love this.

Great video, thank you.
A little warning about rims at junk yard: They might be bent which would make them useless without serious and expensive repair
I did this and my mom fucked up my rims three days later LOL.

Gregory Najar I just did a fucking curb rash like 25 min ago. I was sneaking back home and fucking went to close to the fucking curb. Luckily it’s just a small spot and that’s why I’m watching these videos lol. 🤦🏽♂️
My condolences to your family. I hope you were merciful and quick.
You always says amazing! But, you are the one who is amazing!! Love your videos! keep up the Great Work!

One thing that makes your videos so good is that you think it through before you start and say what needs to be said!
Dear Chrisfix, my husband hates you. Thanks to you and your great videos and awesome explanations, he's had to fix our entire car and the neighbors 😊 thank you -Lots of love
Haha, I am glad you and your husband are learning a lot!!!

The guy I took it to was awesome! Super careful.
This guy is really good what he saying and doing the job . I was amazed i kept watching this video about alloy wheels . It as saved me lots of money as im in the uk 🇬🇧 . I done each stage what Chris did and my alloys have turn out really good like they had been in a work shop refurbished. Thanks Chris love all your videos . Roy from the uk . 🇬🇧
Thanks Roy!
i am so impressed with the outcome. although you make it seem pretty simple, i'm sure it was a lot of work, but it certainly shows. well done!
For a wheel, I would take some shortcuts.
However, it's always best to see how a thorough procedure is done to fix something first in order to understand each step's purpose.
@@cometcal2 Not sure if I would take shortcuts for wheels, because they are the most prone to wear. You def. want the coatings to be stable and clean.
Your going to heaven!! Great video. Proud to be apart of the ChrisFix fam.
Thanks a lot Cory!

T those shitty walmart hubcaps? Lol. 20-30$ at most.
That is funny, reminds of me shopping for wheel covers for my old 1992 Toyota Corolla that I sold in 2014.
I laughed so hard 😂😂
I remember when you were at 1,000 subs, now you're almost at 1.5 mil
Thanks for the support! I cannot believe I have fans who were with me all the way back then! That is amazing!
ChrisFix no problem, I've just always loved your videos, I showed your videos to my dad, and he used multiple if them to fix his 1999 BMW M Roadster, for some examples, he used this video to fix the Curb Rash on his rear left rim, and he used the how to super wash your car to clean it, then he won a car show!
That is awesome man!!!
ChrisFix yeah😄😄 I'm gonna find out how to put pictures in the comments, so I can put the results
ChrisFix Hey boss man, awesome videos as usual! You ever done a video on pitman or idler arm yet??? Would love to see one. Keep up the fantastic editing and commentary!!!!!!
Chrisfix has single handedly created his own empire of car repair and detailing all by himself. Someone should give him a show.
This guy is the best RUclipsr ever wtf
Really good video, too much like work for me, but amazing how you saved the used wheels, looks like new.
Thanks Chuck!
Can you do a video on super cleaning the inside of the car? Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Pam Jones, that's coming soon, he has to clean the inside of the vandalised car.
best DIY auto repair and detailing video on YT...awesome job Chris and thanks from France
I’m going to throw a Chris Fix party. We will watch every video he has. You will take a shot for every time he says “Holy smokes” “Just like that” or spray paints his camera.
Im not sure if that's even going to be safe. Everybody would be *blanked* up
He just put a clear plastic shield wen he sprayed camera ……No worries
I think if anyone saves money off your tips they should pay you a donation of at least $5 and up. it's freaking worth it. make it so Chris, put a donate button somewhere if RUclips doesn't let you then do like other places and use some of the funding places and put a link to it, I am ready to give, you saved me a lot.
I would be a millionaire by now haha. That would be awesome! Thanks a lot and I am glad the videos are helpful!

Ditto, lol. I've got a set of Pepper Pots I'm currently doing for my Fiesta and thought I'd come see how Chrisfix has worked his magic on his own. Never fails to amaze me.
Chris you've helped me so many times. Many thanks, brother. I appreciate your service, even if it's something that doesn't feel like a service to you.

I don’t have a car but i am learning a lot
Same lol. I want to start flipping cars though so I'm trying to learn as much as I can.
Get a car then. It's an extra arm
When I clicked on this video I wasn't expecting to see my exact model of car, in the exact same colour! Then I was a bit disappointed because it had different wheels on it, but then Chris pulled out the right wheels too!
This is exactly what I need!
Edit: So, my wheels are actually slightly different, 17 inch instead of 16 inch, and the spokes are thinner.
This guy's an immortal mechanic. He's just infinite with his trick and tips.
Dude, you’re amazing
Thanks
One of the best DIY videos I have watched.
Thanks!
My curb rash is bad but watching all these videos from cris saves me thousands

Thanks a lot!
Thanks a lot!
Man, this dude is really working his ass off! I feel tired just watching his videos let alone actually implementing his advice in real life.😬 Definitely, this channel is one of the most deserved of his subscribers and views out there!
your the best , انت الافضل , عمل رائع شكرا لك
Thanks!
u didn't show how to put back the tire weight and the thing to fill air in the tire
Hey chris how are those rims till this day.I'd like to do this to my alloy's .Let me know bro.
I think the car is sold now because his dad got a Maserati
Your videos are awesome!
Good job
Good man
Not gonna lie I learned a lot watching your videos . I love how detailed you are when teaching is how to repair and swap parts
Did anyone have any specific issues trying this with tires still on the wheel? (besides covering up the tire before paint with index cards/trash bags/etc...)
Also, any good substitutes for cleaning with rubbing alcohol? (denatured alcohol, brake cleaner, more soapy wooder)?
If you cover everything up, you shouldn't have any issues!
@@chrisfix Thanks for replying to an older video, and I figured as much. I have a couple spots right up against the lip though, but I think using a plastic trim tool may help form the edge.
You're so motivating. But the actual work demotivates me xD thanks for your content!
The work is the best part! It is fun!
ChrisFix Well, you're talented at what you do, not everyone can do it as good as you, including me! Either way you inspire me, my next project will definitely be cleaning under my hood 😉👍🏽
Hey, while I have your attention, just an idea to help your channel grow, I'm sure your subscribers would be very appreciative if you made an updated video on how to tint windows! I surely would! :)
what you mean is that you're not patient enough to do it right. ;P
CaptiN __ Dude, Man up. No pain no gain.
@@SpaceMissile Hehe - this stuff here can produce mediocre results even for the patient ones. What is needed is actual practice :). It's not skills that comes to the patient ones, it's skills that comes to the guys putting a lot of time into practicing it. I've done a LOT of bodywork on cars, and I'm very good at that stuff when it comes to fiberglass and "bondo". Metal bodywork however, I can do with mediocre results, not because I'm not patient hehe - but I never cared enough about putting time into honing those skills.
Omg this is amazing 😭😭😭 hopefully I’ll be brave enough to try after watching 20times
I’m a big fan I’m not fixing my car but I watch your videos for fun so I can learn about cars because it’s thanks to you😊
