Thanks for this helpful video. Getting everything apart wasn't too bad. I got the old cable off and the new one was pretty easy to put on. But the entire neighborhood probably heard me cursing the whole time I was putting the locking mechanism back in ... LOL! Finally got everything reinstalled and buttoned up. Took me about 3 hrs. to complete including a few breaks to re-watch parts of the video. I hope this new cable last a while because it's a bit of a job just to replace such a simple item.

Just got this finished up on my ‘92, but with electrical. Surprisingly I was able to change out the cable with the mechanism still inside the door. I did loosen everything as shown, to be able to maneuver as needed. A very helpful video as always, for us with the older vehicles.

The bolts holding my latch inside the door were stripped. I had to do all this without removing it. WHAT a PAIN. But thanks to the visuals you provided on the door latch and how the cable connects, I was still able to do it. Thank you!

Great video! I replaced my driver door handle cable using this video and it made the job MUCH easier! I especially appreciated the tip about grouping the rods together when putting the latch assembly back into the door. Another helpful hint is that if you have power door locks, make sure the actuating assembly (at the bottom of the door) is seated properly in the bracket, I zip-tied mine in place for extra stability. Thanks 1A Auto!

Thank you so much for the patiently explained and detailed video. I was able to replace my door cable in 45 minutes from start with a few "how does that go in moments" in between.
I was a little confused about the door latch clip but after a couple of views on your video sorted it out.
But handle works like new interms of opening the door, so saved a ton of money because of your video!

Hi, your video was a great help. My 1996 F150 was slightly different though.. The end of the lock rod on your video was pointing to the outside of the door as it was connected to the door lock. Mine has to connect with the end pointing to the inside of the door in order to work. I connected like in the video and the door barely worked then stopped working all together. Neither door handle worked and the key would not unlock the door. I had to pull a few tricks to get the inside door panel off to access the lock and unlock the door.

I have a 1990 Bronco EB w/ power locks and windows. I can open the door from the inside. However, opening from the outside I have to insert the key into the lock and turn as I open the door for it to open. Would that by a lock cylinder problem? or door latch???? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can get a small bag of the plastic clips at the auto parts store for a couple dollars. You can replace the broken ones by just pushing them out of the slot holding them to the door panel and push new clips back in.

Where does this spring attach to? I did not remove the the whole assembly as you did, it was easier to just remove the cable.

stevenb1998 I got the whole mechanism for $127; probably some parts serviceable; but i’m not sure which part failed; yet. I have money but haven’t installed, yet. I might take to mechanic.(96 bronco xl, 351)

  • @MrLuigiFercotti

Now I know why I hadn't done this before. But after snapping off three handles, it's time.
Finally finished. Getting the door rods off is PITA, but getting the lock assy back in correctly was a real bitch. Maybe the door on my 95 F150 is slightly different, but there is not much room to get it positioned correctly behind the window guide.
Also, my handle bracket is pretty wobbly because the sheet metal is starting to tear (probably from being yanked on so hard). So I drilled through the base and put a second #10 sheetmetal screw. First pilot drill through bracket and sheemetal a 3/32" bit, then 3/16" clearance through the bracket only. Go slow, or you go right through the sheetmetal.

except the ford engineering for the brass plate and the plastic handle. While your in there spray lube everything. The brass piece the cable goes into by door handle, fastens to the door frame in a very goofy weak way. Throw a couple of sheet metal drive screws in there.

    • @1AAuto

The water shield helps to prevent water from getting on the door panel. The window sweeps help to prevent water from getting down inside of the door. If yours needs to be replaced, you may be able to get a new one from the dealer. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
