I'm no longer natural due to headaches/migraines, gotta massage my scalp often and I don't need the extra manipulation on my strands. Instead of overnight due to my high porosity hair and sensitive scalp 1x a month after a protein treatment. I remove excess water, apply conditioner+oil and cover head with shower cap and a head wrap for about 30 minutes then allow detangeled hair to air dry adding conditioner to dry ends and rinse. Health is my focus this year, so I'm creating a new routine (built around all the info I gained from your channel. THANK YOU for existing!) I already pre-poo but with the "wrong" oils and not really understanding why. So we are changing that. Also, I will add the hot oil treatment, do it every now and then.
I don't know why I consider my pre poo sort of a hot oil treatment. I do it for about an hour to an hour and a half before shampooing. I guess that would be the difference? You don't shampoo out a hot oil treatment? Maybe the amount that you put on is a lot less. Or maybe it's the type of oil that you use. I pre poo with aloe vera juice and coconut oil.
A hot oil treatment is a treatment for the hair, and a prepoo is a wash day step. So a hot oil treatment can be used as a method to prepoo your hair. Hopefully this makes sense!
@@janice184 I agree with the comment above. Pre-poo is a “step”. Some people use oil, some use conditioner, I use a store bought pre-poo mixed with oil, some people use aloe Vera the list goes on and on lol
I agree with Janice and T! Also prepoo are generally used with oils that penetrate the hair (coconut, babassu, etc), while hot oil treatments are used with protective oils (sunflower, avocado, etc.). Hope this helps!
Happy New Year 🎉🎈! I'm going to start the hot oil treatment. I'm still trying to save my hair. I pre-poo, shampoo and deep condition today. I did the Aphogee about three weeks ago. Deep condition weekly. It's still dry and brittle. I'm going to incorporate some collagen in my diet, after that I'm done with the natural world. Six years is too much wasted time.
Hi Sharon, I appreciate your comment! Natural hair isn't for everyone and THAT IS OKAY! :-) Whatever you decide, do what makes you and your hair happy, that's what matters most.
Things I do if my hair is dry and brittle. 1. Clarify and chelate with a sulfate and EDTA shampoo. I use Paul Mitchell Shampoo three. CURLS Pure curls uses citric acid instead but it doesn't make my hair as soft as the Paul Mitchell. 2. Avoid protein. Use protein-free deep conditioner and protein-free leave in's. 3. Moisturise my hair twice daily. I use Aloevera juice and rose water in a spray mist bottle this is light weight enough to not cause build up. 4. Always use heat with deep conditioner.
@@apara2005 same. I know it's time to clarify when my hair won't absob anything and my hair is high porosity! It's supposed to be easy but not will buildup for sure.
Don't give up. God gave you your hair. I have not use aphogee but for some reason I think that would make my hair hard and brittle, it may be protein-based and that's what protein does to my hair. With some treatments , just add some oils to it but trust me it took a while for me to figure it out as well. I have been a little over four years natural and I'm still learning new stuff. I think I'm almost there as far as figuring out what works for me. I've heard that gray hair is a little more difficult to manage but not that much more difficult so I truly think it's the products you're using or the technique that you're using. It's fine if you want to wear your hair straight but I would not use chemicals, use a blow dryer or flat iron or even the old fashioned straightening comb but don't use chemicals. Chemicals damage your health and can cause alopecia or permanent hair loss. Straightening it otherwise will probably prevent you from getting enough moisture to it utilizing water so it will still be dry and brittle. I think the natural hair that God gave you can be worked with. Happy New Year!
I recently just did ANOTHER big chop...feel like I'm obsessed with cutting hair at this point..anywhoooo, I really don't have a set routine I do with my hair, but I'm looking to start one so that my hair can grow healthy. @@johnkarsh they formulated the products and know the required time for each to work and penetrate the hair. Same. I have a daily self-care list and my hair is on there. Cause having bad hair or bad scalp definitely depresses me. It doesn't have to be long and thick it just needs to be healthy!

Hey! Here's a response to a comment similar to yours that I answered below: You can incorporate hot oil treatments into your pre-poo on dry hair. Do 70% coconut oil (or penetrating oil of your choice) and 30% protecting oil (olive, avocado, etc), apply to hair for an hour or overnight, rinse, shampoo, condition or dc, rinse, then style.
Hello! I prepoo with coconut oil and fresh aloe vera juice(sometimes I mix it together, other times I apply them separately) This method has a ton of slip and it makes my hair super soft. When I use coconut and aloe vera together do you believe I am getting the same benefits of when I only use coconut oil? Thank you, and I really appreciate your channel!!
Can you please PLEASE look at the difference between the Olapex line (N0 and N3) and the new Curlssmith Bond Curl Rehab Salve! I use the olapex line for my high porosity hair and I would love to know which one you consider to be better or just your overall opinion!
Before Curl Smith's bond salve came out, Afope Atoyebi did a video about the different ways to strengthen the hair without protein. Knowing what she explained in that video is key to understanding why this product is not a dupe for Olaplex No 3. The key ingredient in Olaplex is bisaminopropyl diglycol dimaleate which rebuilds sulfur bonds, whereas, the key ingredient in the Salve is an amino acid known as creatine. Proteins are comprised of peptides and the constituents of peptides are amino acids. When it comes to strengthening low porosity hair, amino acids are more easily absorbed by our hair without weighing the hair down. You can use both products in your hair regimen.
Hi & Happy New Year! Love this video! I have one question for you though. When should you do a hot oil treatment in a hair care routine if it's not being done over night? Like should it be done after pre-pooing or after conditioning the hair?
Great question! You can incorporate it into your pre-poo. Do 70% coconut oil (or penetrating oil of your choice) and 30% protecting oil (olive, avocado, etc), apply to hair for an hour or overnight, rinse, then shampoo.
Greetings. I want to wish you a Happy New Year and thank you for sharing your vast hair care knowledge and expertise Ms Chemist. I appreciate and admire you.
Whew I can feel the VO5 from the video lol. My mom was faithful with the hot oil treatment I pre-poo with fresh aloe water, olive, avocado, jojoba, and vitamin E oils. I deep condition after every wash for at least an hour. I just started back using hot oil treatments, will be doing these probably once a month
Hi, What is your take on oiling your scalp daily? I hear olive oil can encourage dandruff (malassezia yeast). More info on this will be appreciated. Btw, I am obsessed with your videos.
I have a sensitive scalp so.. My trichologists banned oils, butters and grease. Also I don't think olive oil alone should used. Olive oil and mixed with drops of tea tree will be anti-fungal. I still use oils but I use them to pre-poo with a shower cap for 30minutes and then shampoo and thoroughly rinse my scalp.
I think you should have some natural sebum on your scalp so you shouldn't have to oil it daily. When relaxed I never wore old my scalp or my hair and I had a lot of hair infected grew better without putting oils on my scalp. Now as a natural I thought I needed to do that because my hair felt so different but I'm finding that I do better if I generally skip that step or you something very natural like the jojoba oil that is very similar to the sebum already on your scalp. When I let up on trying to oil my scalp, they here seems to be growing better and faster. Of course that could also be because I'm still locked down so why bother to style my hair everyday? Maybe I'm just manipulating it a heck of a lot less but my scalp still feels better without putting stuff on it other than a little Spritz of aloe vera and water.
Happy New Year! Im old and I forgot about the times I left conditioners, oils in my hair overnight. I will revisit those 2 techniques for sure. Thanks for sharing!

The deep conditioning overnight is what I do when it is too late in the evening to finish my hair. I do hot oil treatments sometimes. I need to get back to it more regularly. Now, I've never done a pre poo with oil🤔🤔. I always used a conditioner and this is when I'd make sure there were no tangles or knots before diving into the wash routine. I prepoo overnight w/deep conditioner + coconut oil & definitely have noticed a difference. I'd like to incorporate a hot oil treatment. I haven't done those in years. I've started to slowly incorporate henna paste in 2 out of 4 of my prepoo overnight treatments a month & I'd like your scientific opinion on henna & best ways to use it.
OK I've seen where people say adding the oil actually dries out your hair over time because the oil gets in the cuticle so the water isn't able to get in and hydrate the hair. What are your thoughts on that?
Um.. If you use shampoo or a surfactant, the oil can't stay in the hair long term. Now I'd you only use conditioner to wash your hair then yes you will have a problem (I'm looking at your Devacurl)
I think deep conditioning overnight is a controversial topic. I hear reasons on why it is good and why it's not so good. However, all I can say is that I see the difference in manageability and softness when I deep condition overnight. That is actually the only way I deep condition...I will now begin to incorporate hot oil treatments into my regimen. As always, thanks for the information!

going to try the overnight DC. already started the other two and seen a difference in the softness of my hair though i will like to stop breakage. so for 2021, no combing for me , only finger detangling.
I love my hot oil treatments under my steamer. BUT, dampening my hair then layering on my oil (JBCO), that is very special when done overnight. My hair is super soft.
Curly Chemist, Thank You for responding> You did't give the Answer for the Cream of Nature product you used when coloring your hair. Thanking You In Advance!!!!!! Have a Blessed Weekend.
At first, I though hot oil treatments were only for high porosity naturals. However, since porosity and oil loss are unrelated. I guess I might as well try it. Though I am reluctant because, I think the oil will be too hot for my scalp to handle. I'll just do my research to suffice the best decision for my hair.
Don't make it too hot! Test it on your finger and elbow first like you do for a baby's bath water. Also the oil is mainly for the midlengths and ends and not your scalp/roots.
Don't hate the oil at all, just put on a plastic Grocery Store bag or a plastic cap and I generally tie a turban towel over that and then I put on a knit winter hat or cap and my body heat warms it up. If for some reason I chose to do that overnight then I would do is Curly chemistry says. Put on the plastic bag or cap and then a scarf on top of that and then I usually have to go ahead and put a bonnet on as well to keep that scarf in place. But you don't have to heat it and if you do want to heat it I would just use a cup of warm water put the oil in a bottle and sit in there for a little while so that it's at least room temperature which it would be anyway initially but that's just way too many steps for me. Your body heat or hooded dryer we get it going. I have just not placed any heat on my hair such as from a dryer since going natural a little over four years ago.
Happy New Year! Wish you a happy and prosperous 2021!! Thanks for another awesome vid Unrelated to the video, but, what hair care recommendations would you have for an athlete (cyclist) who trains 6 days a week and sweats a lot esp post-workout?
Happy New Year! I would say the same for any other lifestyle; depending on your hair set some time apart each week to pre-poo, shampoo, condition, and style your hair. If you feel like your scalp is being affected due to the increased sweat, incorporating apple cider vinegar rinses would be great for the health of your scalp. I hope this helps! :-)
@@llorzz When I swim daily, I use Cantu co-wash, I can't be having sea salt or chlorine sitting on my scalp or hair. I do the same with gym, football or any sweaty exercise. Incorporating prepoo into my wish day regemine has been a game changer. Question. When in my wash day do I add the hot oil treatments? I usually prepoo, cleanse, deep condition, moisturize, seal, stretch/air dry (usually some big plats) then hen style/set (generally twists/twist outs).
Which of these would you recommend to remove two strand twist that have been in too long and have matted in some places and too dry. I mist with water daily and I have washed in the protective style and applied conditioner and oil on wash day to the hair that I can access.
You are going to need a litre of oil/butter. Soak the hair in oil for as long as you can. Then slowly with your fingers tease apart the strands. If you can't get it apart with your hands, try a small tooth comb or the pin tail of a comb. If still not able to prise apart try a detangler. If still stuck, it's going to be safety pins and scissors unfortunately. I used to do this when I work box braid extensions for 12 weeks. I detangle my loose natural hair weekly. In 4 weeks without detangling or having braid extensions in, my hair will be turning into dreadlocks.
Oh wow all the way back to Vo5 hot oil. My mom loved that. No overnights for me because my trichologists banned that. 30 mins with heat is enough for me. Yup I pre poo with oil and heat for 30 mins. Every week.
Do you ever make a video to show how you actually take care of your hair? Like a wash day routine to show what products you use and how you use them? I would love to see one 😊. Your videos are very informative but I never get to see how you actually take care of your hair.
I used to do hot oil treatments when I was relaxed, but haven't tried one since natural. But I have a question. What's the difference between prepooing and the hot oil treatment? Do you use different oils? And how often would you do a hot oil treatment?

I want to try the deep conditioning overnight a try.
Don't do it if you have a sensitive scalp like me.
@@marleyhill34 I do have sensitive scalp thank you
I'm no longer natural due to headaches/migraines, gotta massage my scalp often and I don't need the extra manipulation on my strands. I air dry 45ish% and apply products, sealing oil, and style. Also applying conditioner to slightly dampened hair, trying to aviod direct application to scalp, loosely braid/protective style/head wrap for a few hours or the day is a good way to deep condition. Always showing extra love the the ends. Cheers!

Happy new year!! :-)
Happy New Year and blessings to you as well!
Health is my focus this year, so I'm creating a new routine (built around all the info I gained from your channel. THANK YOU for existing!)
I already pre-poo but with the "wrong" oils and not really understanding why. So we are changing that. Also, I will add the hot oil treatment, do it every now and then.
That sounds great Nela! :-)
Happy New Year! What is the difference between a prepoo and a hot oil treatment?
Thanks for the replies. This really helps.
@@CurlyChemistry I thought avocado oil was a penetrating oil? 🤔

Which oil should I use for thin high porosity hair for prepoo
Olive oil is great for HP thin hair prepoo
Coconut oil :-)
I don't have one and I will try the pre-poo method this weekend! Thank you Curly Chemist!
I pre poo at night and deep condition during the day. I also message the oils blend every few days to help my hair.
@@marleyhill34 yup...clarifying makes a WORLD of difference!!! When I have build up, my hair barely absorbs water.
I know about deep conditioning, however, I've never tried doing a hot oil treatment or doing a prepoo. I'm looking forward to start incorporating these steps! Thanks for the info =)
I usually do a pre-poo. Is there a difference between pre-poo and hot oil treatment?
Happy New Year and as usual, Great Video. I think I’m gonna try the overnight deep conditioning.
Happy New Year! Yes, let me know how it goes! :-)
Follow the instructions of your deep conditioner. Don't do otherwise, please.
@@johnkarsh they formulated the products and know the required time for each to work and penetrate the hair.
According to most conditioning articles I've read(Moknowshair, Green Beauty, Curl Centric, Naturally Curly etc), they all advise that you don't exceed products instruction and that deep conditioner only penetrate the hair within the first 30 minutes of application.
So, you see.
Consistency is my self care for my hair. I look forward to my weekly wash no matter what.
Same! I love wash day!
Same. I have a daily self-care list and my hair is on there. Cause having bad hair or bad scalp definitely depresses me. It doesn't have to be long and thick it just needs to be healthy!
@@marleyhill34 I finally picked up on the fact my hair and scalp were bad because of depression. I was otherwise healthy. Be it from neglect and/or internal issues my hair was in bad shape. I started slowly repairing my hair then I noticed my nails getting stronger so I cared for them more, then my skin was getting better so now I do facials and exfoliate my body regularly, I was craving sun light again. I’m feeling better all over as I rebuild my self care practices. I’m over one year into it. The down time during the pandemic has given me good reason to and allowed me time to focus. The personal growth has been wonderful. Thanks for letting me to share that with you.
At what step is the hot oil treatment supposed to be done? After deep conditioning?
@@CurlyChemistry Thank you!
Hi, can you do a video on the effectiveness of the inversion method when doing scalp massages?
I'm planning to do overnight deep conditioner! I'm presently doing pre poo overnight! I would like to see a video on ways to thicken natural hair! MM
I pre poo, but you taught me the right ingredients to use. I'm so excited.
Sounds like hair heaven. Lol!
Does it matter the type of deep conditioner, moisturizing or strengthening? Would like to try this one.
It doesn't, but I prefer moisturizing conditioners or DC's.
Can you please PLEASE look at the difference between the Olapex line (N0 and N3) and the new Curlssmith Bond Curl Rehab Salve! I use the olapex line for my high porosity hair and I would love to know which one you consider to be better or just your overall opinion!
Hi Akhira! The Curlsmith Rehab Salve is not a one to one replacement with Olaplex. If I had to choose for protein building, I'd chose Olaplex.
Thank you!!!
@@ChristsChemist Thank you! I forgot about Afope Atoyebi's video.
Hi & Happy New Year! Love this video! I have one question for you though. When should you do a hot oil treatment in a hair care routine if it's not being done over night? Like should it be done after pre-pooing or after conditioning the hair?
Same thought, where in the process do you do the hot oil treatment?
Great question! You can incorporate it into your pre-poo. Do 70% coconut oil (or penetrating oil of your choice) and 30% protecting oil (olive, avocado, etc), apply to hair for an hour or overnight, rinse, then shampoo.
My favorite is prepoo

Whew I can feel the VO5 from the video lol. My mom was faithful with the hot oil treatment
I pre-poo with fresh aloe water, olive, avocado, jojoba, and vitamin E oils.
Wouldn't deep conditioning overnight cause hydral fatigue? The very thing you are trying to prevent with pre-pooing?
That's what I am wondering as well. I have also heard that the greenhouse method can cause the hair shaft to swell and burst
I don't know...
@@womanofgod2948 😳 oh wow
@@johnkarsh you ONLY deep condition once a
Month ?!
Great question! Pre-pooing is a preventative method, so incorporating pre-poo every wash day will restore the hair to a more lipophilic state, so when you do incorporate a self care moment like DC overnight you will not experience hygral fatigue, because of the pre-poo already incorporated within your weekly or bi-weekly regimen. You wouldn't DC overnight every wash day, only when you feel like your hair needs a lil extra oomph...maybe once a month or once every other month, depending on each individuals hair needs.
I do all 3 and my hair loves it 💙
So happy to see you post! I have low porosity hair. How often can I hot oil treat?

The deep conditioning overnight is what I do when it is too late in the evening to finish my hair. I do hot oil treatments sometimes. I need to get back to it more regularly. Great to hear Yolanda! ☺️
Love your videos! Very helpful! What’s the difference between a prepoo and a hot oil treatment?
OK I've seen where people say adding the oil actually dries out your hair over time because the oil gets in the cuticle so the water isn't able to get in and hydrate the hair. What are your thoughts on that?
Um.. If you use shampoo or a surfactant, the oil can't stay in the hair long term. Now I'd you only use conditioner to wash your hair then yes you will have a problem (I'm looking at your Devacurl)
If you use shampoo then it's not a prob
What the difference between pre poo overnight and a hot oil treatment overnight?
I think deep conditioning overnight is a controversial topic. I hear reasons on why it is good and why it's not so good. However, all I can say is that I see the difference in manageability and softness when I deep condition overnight. That is actually the only way I deep condition...I will now begin to incorporate hot oil treatments into my regimen. As always, thanks for the information!

@@marleyhill34 Thanks for the help!

How do you do that??
@@marleyhill34 Thank you so much! Will give this a try!
