So many setbacks. I never had this much trouble with my hair when I was permed. Our hair is so fickle and it seems our porosity, grade and curl patterns change constantly. I was actually considering going back to the creamy crack for a little peace. I would love to speak with you directly because I've wasted millions of hours on our hair, and products, and making my own natural ayurvedic combinations. A few years ago My daughter had 20 inches of healthy hair when the first fiasco occurred. So I explained to my daughter that her hair does not define her while helping her appreciate new and fun styles. My high porosity hair loves aloe Vera , coconut oil, slipper elm, marshmallow root, hydrolyzed protein, silk amino acids/protein a multitude of butters and silicones. This hair requires layers of products ie LI, hair milk/curling cream , a sealing butter or oil then a good strong hold gel for longevity. @@joiwilliams5830 do you know the calcium deposits/limescale build up on your kettles, taps, faucets, shower heads, sinks, plughole and bathtubs? Yeah that stuff builds up slowly in your hair damaging it and blocking moisture and conditioner penetration. Also chlorine, copper and iron, what ever is in your tap water. Bottled and mineral water has it too. Sea water has a high salt content and swimming pools have a high chlorine content. The only water that doesn't have these minerals and metals is filtered water and distilled water. So all of those chemicals, minerals and metals build up on the hair strand and can ruin it. Pollution doesn't help either. So a chelating shampoo will remove all of those minerals, metals and chemicals whereas a clarifying shampoo main removes mainly product build up. Only use a chelating shampoo once every 4-6 weeks. Any more than that and it will dry out your hair.

Still in awe with these details. Shopping made easier. Thanks again. Feeling like I had a class. Every time you speak. It's like we all in class together. You make learning about the scalp and hair so much fun and so very interesting too. Feeling comforted and reassured. 🥰🦋
Hi Curly Chemist, can you do a dedicated video on glycerin to talk about facts vs myths AND the different types of glycerin? My hair LOVES vegetable glycerin and water mixed into a spray bottle for misting BUT I stopped doing that when I started hearing other RUclipsrs say that depending on the environment that it can cause moisture to be pulled FROM my hair. That scared me into not using it. Also, can you do a video on how hair dyes affect porosity? I just started dying my hair dark brown and it seems to have gotten soooo dry and the products no longer absorb! Why??? It's not being bleached. Is it the ammonia? I told my hairstylist I no longer want that in my hair!
Shea Butter. Marshmallow root has really helped in the slip that I need. Petroleum it also give my hair great slip and that's why I went back to using Blue Magic's Shea butter castor oil hair grease. I'm loving the results on my hair I'm having wonderful results with using it. It seems to coat my weak strands and I have far less breakage with it along with plenty of slip. Since adding it to my regiment that includes liquid water based moisturizers my hair has begun to flourish. I have high porosity hair that is colored and naturally gray now. Thank you for such informative videos. I just found you and I am loving it.
I get excited when i see Amla! (For 1. I’m doing my own “ingredient investigation” on my channel and am learning so much about so many amazing (and not so amazing) ingredients)
I love watching your videos, every single time I go running to my product shelf to see what contains those amazing ingredients! My favorite ingredient is marshmallow root, because it sounds fun, it always gives products a unique scent that I love, and I think my hair enjoys it too. Can't wait for the next vid!
I'm low porosity so any humectant. Honey, aloe, glycerin omg glycerin Jesus I could go into a praise break. Just thinking on what those ingredients do to my hair. My hair loves it so much.
Honey and avocado oil. My hair is drrry and I have eczema. Any rubbish hair product whether it is grease, shampoo or leave in, I just add either avocado oil or honey and it takes it to another level.
Glycerin high in the ingredients does the opposite for my hair. I'm from a hot dry area and that glycerin sucks whatever moisture I have out. Please touch on different climates when fooling with glycerin. Also the ingredient I won't live without is Behentrimonium Methosulfate in either form. Tfs!
I live in a state where I experience the 4 seasons and no matter the season, humidity level or dew point my hair and glycerin have the same relationship as oil and water! They just do not mix at all. I’ve followed all the advice and suggestions and have come to terms that my hair just doesn’t like humectants that are meant to stay in. I use products that are humectant free or so low on the ingredient list that my hair doesn’t react to it.
My fav ingredient is glycerin. When I use a product w/it after my wash & seal w/something heavier my hair stays moist for 4 days! I don't have to add anything. Recently I've been loving Lanolin for the fall/winter.
Do you follow the LOC or LCO? If yes when do you add the glycerin? How do you add it to the hair? I have some but I don't know how to use it on my hair.
My favorite ingredient is murumuru butter. It's rare to find as an ingredient when it comes to products (Physicians Formula has a lip line that contains murumuru butter which works great for my dry chapped lips). I purchased Carol's Daughter Coco Creme because it has that ingredient along with mango butter (amazing as well) and coconut oil (plus, I ran out of different conditioner). The moisture and slip is amazing! The smell is a bonus! Hopefully one day, I can make DIY hair products that contain those ingredients. Thank you for this informative video. I really appreciate it.
I'm still trying to find a favorite. Another friend who is a chemist has me avoiding proteins all together for a moment because I wore twists for 3 months during COVID lockdown, moisturized daily and still ending up having to cut as much as my new growth. I've been at a plateau for 6 years with my fine, 4C high po hair so I'm still looking for what keeps my ends strong and health for length retention.
I read a research article that Coconut oil, being a triglyceride of lauric acid (principal fatty acid), has a high affinity for hair proteins and, because of its low molecular weight and straight linear chain, is able to penetrate inside the hair shaft. Does this mean coconut oil is trying to sap the protein from the hair?
Coconut oil helps to keep the protein in the hair! That’s why when people have protein overload it is recommended that they stop using coconut oil because they want to get rid of excess protein but the coconut oil prevents that from happening. That’s what i’ve read :)
Yep it does my grand used it on me as a kid...went by to it with E'tae silk conditioner and it is bomb. Shedding is getting better it has been 3 uses now...with the henna had to find a good one Amazon has one.
My hair likes organic coconut oil. Moroccan oil leves my hair fluffy. I tried the entire Moroccan oil hair line when I lived in NYC and it left my hair fluffy like a cotton ball. Mousse also leaves my hair fluffy. Organic coconut oil and eco gel with olive oil work for me. Will have to give leave in conditioner and styling creams a try. Last time I tried one it didn’t let the gel stick to my hair. I feel like creams and mousses makes my hair fluffy while organic coconut oil and the olive oil Eco gel is the only thing combination I have found so far that works for me. I have high density hair so I am always trying to keep my hair under control because it grows and expands so much so I always try to calm it down with gel.
You mentioned that Coconut oil is good for preventing/helping with Hygral Fatigue. If using it as a pre-poo for that purpose, would you apply it to dry hair or damp/wet hair? And would it be as effective against HF if mixed with other ingredients, e.g. The other penetrating oils, or a rinse out conditioner.
My favorite ingredient is Hippophae rhamnoides aka Sea Buckthorn Oil. It’s found in my AVEDA hair products. I also love how it smells. I often add it to other hair products that I may use that doesn’t contain it. I also love marshmallow root and slippery elm.
Yes, Yes, Yes!!! My hair does not like coconut oil and becomes dry and dull with it. So, I avoid all products with coconut oil in the first few ingredients. I tried to use it because so many people hyped it. But everything doesn't work for everybody.
Exactly I can't use coconut oil nor castor oil. I have low porosity hair so I can't use those heavy oils. My fav oils are grapeseed, argan, avocado and sweet almond. The grapeseed helps so much with breakage. My hai has fallen out from using products with coconut in it smh now I trying to get it back right. Avocado mask works wonders too!! I learned to feed my hair real food and water lol I need yo incorporate massage into my scalp care too
It would be interesting for you or anyone to post a video about how hair changes as you get older. I am 55 and noticed the change. Sometimes, the hair structure changes and what was normally used for hair care needs to be updated 🤨
My coarse, thick hair is no longer at 52 years old. The curl pattern has changed. For nearly 30 yrs I had dreads. I cut them off 3 yrs ago and was surprised at the texture of my hair. It seemed finer.
I just found you a few days ago and I LOVE your videos! This was very helpful as have been all of your videos I’ve watched. You get right to the point and keep things simple and easy to understand. Thank you! Looking forward to the high porosity vid!!
I always get excited when I see panthenol. No clue what it does but I'm crazy about it because my mom has always gotten products that have it. Her hair is down her back.
I had a recent Olaplex experience and it caused my hair to come out in handfuls. my hair has never come out like that. When I stopped using it I had to use 2 protein treatments to get it to stop breaking. It wasn't doing that before Olaplex and is not breaking now. I wish you would do a fell review of this product on natural hair. Love your videos!
I have been watching your channel since your relaxer days and I still go back to them for reference as I am going back to relaxers. I love how you break down everything into their molecular size and use common knowledge examples for demonstration purposes. Love your videos 😘. My favorite ingredient is aloe Vera
Thanks for clarifying that "hair grease" and silicone-based products may not be the best first choices for "natural" hair but are not BAD. I have never believed them to be entirely bad/wrong for natural hair because (1) unless used in excess per application they seem to protect the hair, (2) during the years prior to 2010-2015, commercially sold "hair grease" is what people had access to and their hair was still often healthy, (3) not every "natural" ingredient is good for every person's hair. Thanks for tackling the topic.
What about using glycerin in low humid places? I live in the desert southwest and for me when I use products that has glycerin as a top ingredient my hair feels dry. Is there a way I can use glycerin?
Hi! I live in a similar area and I’ve found that glycerin in my hair stylers and leave in conditioners can be damaging for my hair. I do use glycerin in my cleansers, rinse out and deep conditioners but everything else is glycerin free!
Well know you understand the effects of a humectant on hair when the dew point is low.... the high concentration of water is being sucked out of the hair into the atmosphere leaving it in my opinion worse than dry ( hard, tangly basically angry 😡). Glycerine is a strong humectant so when the dew point is high ( weather is humid
In humid weather the glycerine will pull water into the hair making it feel sticky and/or poofy losing its shape basically turning your curly wash and go to a fro. Low porosity hair loves glycerine in products left on the hair to bring the moisture into the closed cuticle. High porosity hair poorly tolerated glycerine or other highly humectants ( beet sugar, honey) in leave in products because it brings to much water into the open cuticle. Naturally Curky has an app that will give you the dew points and show you the effect on your specific hair type based upon your specific location. I swear by it and definitely use it when traveling to determine what hair products to use or not based upon the style I want to maintain. It also makes product suggestions and yes refers you to the website for purchase.
There is latex in the plant...cut the side edges off cut up leaves and soak in water over night pour off water then use as normal by cutting in half and getting gel out this should help get the itch out for you.
Thank you for the information! How long do these proteins that we put in our hair last for? Like can they end up being washed out or do they stay permanently?
You are the best! I would love to see a video on how protein overload affects low porosity hair. I just experienced this last week using Aphogee Deep Moisture Shampoo. My hair isn't cooperating.
I too have low porosity hair and experiencing protein over load. I’ve lost a lot of hair. My hair feels crunchy, extra dry, unable to comb it. Ugh. And I have bra strap length. I feel like I have to cut and start over.
Tonya! So excited for a video on high porosity! I feel like most naturals on youtube have low porosity hair therefore majority of the videos on curly/kinky hair focus on low porosity hair. Also, would you be able to do a video on using glycerin, what factors can play in it working for some but not others?
Excellent information, especially about Lauric Acid, it prompted me to look at a soap quality spreadsheet I have which details the properties of oils when it comes to soap making. So just like I thought, most of the oils high in Lauric Acid seem to be "cleansing oils". Examples of some cleansing oils are highlighted below and they're all high in Lauric Acid. I initially searched this info to find coconut oil alternatives for people who were allergic. Thanks for sharing, much appreciated. I recently started using sodium lactate in soap making and learned that some use it as a glycerin alternative. Anyone ever tried it in their hair?
May we please see a makeup tutorial and skincare routine video? Your makeup and skin look amazing. I am looking for good relatively clean makeup products.
Could you do a video about ayurvedic herbs on natural hair? I use henna glosses to condition and strengthen my hair. Can Henna be compared to a protein treatment?
@@patb2582 the first time I used henna I just used it with acv and water bad mistake! My hair was so dry and brittle for months. Now I only use henna with oils or conditioners.
Henna glosses are really good. Zizyphus and cassica is an alternative to henna. Were you using full henna treatments or glosses? How often did you use Henna? How did you care for your hair after the treatments?
Love Olaplaex. It helped greatly with retention and helped my hair grow longer when I was relaxed. Have not used it since big chop 8 months ago. Hate coconut oil. Makes my crunchy and dull.
Looking forward to your high porosity knowledge. I have naturally high porosity fragile then hair. I stop using Henna because it loosens my curl and permanently dyed my hair..
Protein treatment once a month for these fine high porosity hair the best thing I've ever done, stops breakage like magic! And of course moisturize w a cream 2-4x a week.
I have High porosity hair and I have a problem with build up. If I use any store bought gels or custards on my hair once it dries it’s all white and flaky. What can I use to slick down my hair that wouldn’t dry it out?
I can co-sign on the coconut oil. For months my hair has been thinning and breaking a lot and just being dusty overall. I acknowledge that I’ve been skimping on the hair care and it’s showed. I realized that main thing I let go was unrefined virgin coconut oil. So I started rubbing it into my scalp and then rubbing it down my strands and in less than a month I see my hair coming back to life. Lots of new growth and it’s growing in full and strong. Plus it’s a very light so not that much buildup in between washes.
Great information and relevant facts. I ordered the Olaplex holiday kit $60 available from Sephora Nordsrom Bloomingdales and Olaplex store all free shipping. A good time to try it because one item in the set is $28 alone

Started making my own shampoo and conditioner. I am adding hydrolysis silk and coconut oils to them. Hoping my hair quality improves with those ingredients
Still in awe with these details. Shopping made easier. Thanks again. Feeling like I had a class. Every time you speak. It's like we all in class together. You make learning about the scalp and hair so much fun and so very interesting too. Feeling comforted and reassured. 🥰🦋
Thank you Vanessa!! I’m so glad you’re here. 💜
That's for the education always. My hair likes honey, hibiscus, rosemary and rose water /extract . Be well
Hi Curly Chemist, can you do a dedicated video on glycerin to talk about facts vs myths AND the different types of glycerin?
Thanks for explaining more of what Olaplex does. I look forward to the high porosity. Favorite ingredient ... hmmm so hard to choose
You’re welcome! ☺️

Favorite Ingredient: LOVE
I love Black Castor Oil on my hair. I'm curious to see what you think of it.
I love watching your videos, every single time I go running to my product shelf to see what contains those amazing ingredients! My favorite ingredient is marshmallow root, because it sounds fun, it always gives products a unique scent that I love, and I think my hair enjoys it too. Can't wait for the next vid!
Thank you!! Marshmallow root is nice! ☺️
I've been loving grease.
It’s been a game changer for me!
I like infusing hair oil with herbs that I use for teas like nettle leaf and holy basil.
My fav ingredient I have several, however water, glycerin, aloe vera, and fenugreek in a spay bottle! I have low porosity hair!😇
I'm low porosity so any humectant. Honey, aloe, glycerin omg glycerin Jesus I could go into a praise break. Just thinking on what those ingredients do to my hair. My hair loves it so much.
I recently got highlights so I cant wait for that high porosity video cause I'm struggling rn even for being a seasoned natural!
Honey and avocado oil.
My hair is drrry and I have eczema. Any rubbish hair product whether it is grease, shampoo or leave in, I just add either avocado oil or honey and it takes it to another level.
@ Doreen Patterson... Bless you for sharing! I have the same problem.
Tfs!
So fascinating how different everyone's experience is! What does that ingredient do? Thanks!
Hi five sis my hair hates glycerin I'm in san diego ca ☺
I also have problems with too much Glycerine. It seems to make my hair frizzy.
@@rh5938 yes! My hair is frizzy by nature and glycerin makes it way frizzier lol
You’re so welcome!! ☺️
Thank you! I love looking at Hair as a science 🧪 🧬
Hey Amber!! You're welcome!! :-)
I have that question too, I thought it was hard to absorb...and dries. Personally, found it drying some..time wondering what affects this?
Coconut oil helps to keep the protein in the hair! That’s why when people have protein overload it is recommended that they stop using coconut oil because they want to get rid of excess protein but the coconut oil prevents that from happening. That’s what i’ve read :)
@@sophiacoleman1192 Thanks, can you point me to that research study that you are referring to?
Hey can you do a video on henna? Does it really thicken the hair strands?
Yep it does my grand used it on me as a kid...went by to it with E'tae silk conditioner and it is bomb. Shedding is getting better it has been 3 uses now...with the henna had to find a good one Amazon has one.
@@dezeraimonique1262 I'm trying to find a good one that is dark and will cover my gray hair.
I love olive oil and murumuru butter.
Water, aloe vera and coconut oil are some of my fave ingredients.
I just can’t do coconut oil. It actually dries my hair out.
try organic jojoba oil!!
I learned to feed my hair real food and water lol I need yo incorporate massage into my scalp care too
she speaks about it often and says use it as a prepoo, not after moisturizing.
Me too. Coconut and protein both act like an astrengent for me. Its a no-no
It would be interesting for you or anyone to post a video about how hair changes as you get older.
Favorite ingredient
Behentrimonium Methosulfate
Mane Choice and Soultanicals love it too lol
I always get excited when I see panthenol. No clue what it does but I'm crazy about it because my mom has always gotten products that have it. Her hair is down her back.
Panthenol is a mosturizer and humectant.
Love your videos!
a video on collage and do you recommend the intake of it for hair growth.
I experienced itch on my skin with aloe Vera. Is this normal, any videos on aloe Vera and how to use plzzzzz
There is latex in the plant...cut the side edges off cut up leaves and soak in water over night pour off water then use as normal by cutting in half and getting gel out this should help get the itch out for you.
@@dezeraimonique1262 wow thank you so much will try it. God blessings much appreciated 😍
Great advice!!
I like tea tree oil, peppermint oil, rosemary oil, Argan oil, vitamin e, vitamin c, castor oil or Jamaican black castor oil, any hydrolyzed proteins.
Tonya! So excited for a video on high porosity! I feel like most naturals on youtube have low porosity hair therefore majority of the videos on curly/kinky hair focus on low porosity hair. Also, would you be able to do a video on using glycerin, what factors can play in it working for some but not others?
I've been seeing a lot of fruit and grain waxes added to hair products lately. Can you do a video on them and tell us if they are bad for the hair?

My hair usually reacts well with condtioners containing avocado oil
Love to hear you speak Chemistry!! Your tips are so helpful, Thanks!

Glycerin!! From the time I went natural nearly 10 years ago my hair loves it.
Could you do a video about ayurvedic herbs on natural hair? I use henna glosses to condition and strengthen my hair. Can Henna be compared to a protein treatment?
omg just recovering from henna overload now..like dayum that stuff is strong.
I really like seeing any humectant in my products. I also like seeing avocado oil.
Love avocado!
No to the coconut, but I'll try the Babassu and Murumuru 🙋🏽♀️
Love Olaplaex. It helped greatly with retention and helped my hair grow longer when I was relaxed. Have not used it since big chop 8 months ago.
Hate coconut oil. Makes my crunchy and dull.
Looking forward to your high porosity knowledge. I have naturally high porosity fragile then hair. I stop using Henna because it loosens my curl and permanently dyed my hair..
My favorite ingredient in a hair product is sea moss. I get so excited when I see it in a hair curling custard.
Protein treatment once a month for these fine high porosity hair the best thing I've ever done, stops breakage like magic! And of course moisturize w a cream 2-4x a week.
which protein treatment did u use? Aphogee or Olaplex? Thanks
Thank you for sharing the knowledge. You are an awesome teacher!👏
Aww thank you!! 🤗
I think glycerin would have to be my favorite ingredient. I've learned so much about it and how great it is for dry hair. Especially living in Texas.
Hi Tonya, does any of these products work with relaxed hair as well for healthy hair growth
When I see aloe or advocado I get excited 😁
Where can we look up a list of best penetrating oils vs sealing oils

How much of each ingredient did you use? I used to do that when I was a new natural. I tried glycerine recently but it didn't work for me
That’s a great mix! Thank you for sharing! ☺️
For the oil & glyercin I apply a small amount (maybe just over a dime) per each small section of wet/damp hair. For larger twist I use a bit more.
