Just five minutes ago bought 5lbs of Shea butter and then saw this video pop and was like NOOOOOOO! Immediate buyers remorse before even viewing it, thinking you would recommend something else. My hair literally changes the second I put Shea butter on it! It immediately softens my hair and smooths down my frizz. I loveee it!! Ladies just an FYI a lot of the shea butters that claim to be USDA certified aren’t! I was double checking through the USDA integrity database to verify claims. Sharing for those of you who care...
Hey Helen, if your hair loves shea butter, girl use that thing!! Ain't nothing wrong with shea, I love shea too! Don't feel bad about that 5lb bag, always use what works for you! :-)
Curly Chemistry haha yes, thank you for your reply. I almost bought Mango butter but figured I would stick to what I was confident in. Maybe another time
blueangel1985 I don’t mind at all...I ordered from a company called Mary Tylor Naturals, it’s my first time ordering so I can’t speak on quality. I just know they were certified on USDAs integrity site. They are on amazon but their site has more options and the shipping was the same price so I just ordered directly from there. However, what I can stand by is my fav company to get herbs, oils and butters is Mountain Rose Herb, their shipping (If order is under $75) is hefty but otherwise their quality is awesome and I appreciate the companies integrity. You can visit their site and read up on their fair trade practices and all their organic certifications. I do not work for them lol. I’ve just been a fan for years :) I would have ordered from them but due to Covid-19 they are closed. I hope that helps!
My custom blend is equal parts cocoa butter, Shea butter, mango butter, and coconut oil. That's the butter I'd bring. Technically it's still one butter.
Because I'm medium to high porosity, I choose to bring Mango butter along with aloe vera and fenugreek. They are very moisturizing and the fenugreek just help with the retention of hair growth among other properties.

I'm low porosity & I recently started using butters on my hair just before putting it in twists or mini braids & I can say my hair is getting stronger. Oils on scalp, butters on hair.💯😁
Please do a video on dandruff and naturally dry scalp. I’ve always had dry scalp no matter what products I use after day 2 my scalp is dry like the desert
I'm currently working in a chemistry lab and it really got me thinking about how to best treat my hair. I'm really binging all of your videos now. And oh, I am definitely bringing shea butter.

This is my first time watching your video and I'm gonna get a notebook specifically for your videos to take notes so I can refer back. New subscriber. I still use grease sometimes. Very easy to understand thank you for answering these questions and explaining it so well. Whenever I would use butters to "moisturize" my hair it would dry it out and not moisturize at all. I thought I was doing something wrong lol. Thank you for explaining this in such detail.🤗
I would love for you to actually show brands or recommend brands in a step by step because while your information is excellent and love watching your videos for me it’s a bit confusing
I tend to avoid butters so I haven't bought very many. But if I have to choose it'd be between Shea or Cocoa. Shea might win bc its easy to find where I live, its affordable and doesn't require softening to scoop out. But I do really like cocoa butter bc once you manage to dig it out of the container and emulsify it it's much lighter, less greasy and it smells better than Shea butter. Tfs. Valuable info.

I love your presentation, and as someone said earlier in the comments, you break things down so well for the non-chemist folks. Like, I’m literally following your explanations... Thank you so much for sharing. I have had dry hair for a long time.. snap, crackle and pop... Lots of people have told me try this and that or their natural hair product? Only to find out it did nothing for my hair. Just because it is all natural does not mean it is the right chemistry for my hair. Everybody has a formula for their hair and you have saved me from wasting more money on products that do not work for my hair texture. I now understand what I have been doing wrong. I had no real understanding of how some of these moisturizers + oils + butters + porosity. Based on porosity of my hair I can make an informed decision about the combination that works best. Thank you !!!!!!
From one chemist to another, thank you for all the facts! Too many consumers get deceived on products and it is refreshing to hear someone set the record straight on ingredients. So my cruise/vacation butter would have to be my kokum/murumuru mix - it's the best 😍
Wow, So PMP is like an enhanced version of LOC to prevent Hygral Fatigue! I must say I am impressed. Because i always been concerned about over moisture. I'll try that out. Will be waiting for your PMP video, I love the science you provide.
I would love you to explain protein sensitivity, how it comes about and what you can do to help grow and moisturise that particular type of hair. I believe many more black women may have this and not know. For many years, my hair never grew and I didn't know why. It was obviously breaking and I was using hair products with alot of aloe vera and coconut oil. I know now to avoid any hair products with coconut oil in it. Which means lots of reading on the back of bottles and jars. Luckily being a scientist helps me out.My hair will also turn brittle snd straw like if I leave them in too long:rice water ,aloe vera, henna and amla, bamboo etc. But it does love honey, avocado oil, light butters and milky leave in moisturisers. Thanks so much in advance. From a cousin also in STEM!
I’m new to your channel and this is the 2nd video I’ve watched. So impressed with you, I just purchased your e-book! My fav go to butter is Cocoa Butter. I love the full chocolatey smell, especially paired with peppermint essential oil. Also bcz it not only protects hair and adds shine, it protects your skin and gives it that “inner” glow.
It almost destroyed my hair after a year of using it (too much protein). I switched to shea butter/olive oil and as a result my hair is amazing. See Naptural 85’s video on coconut oil and what it did to her hair.
I use avocado butter! My hair is high density AND high porosity hair and fine strands. Silicones, grease and butters (and oils) are my friends lol as long as I wash weekly (sulfate free shampoo)
I like hair butter for my fine, high porosity strands the best. Hair grease is too oily/greasy for me due to the fact that I have to be a little heavy handed with my products to fully protect my hair. Butters can be oily too but I find that butters (Shea is my absolute favorite) works extremely well on my hair due to the fatty content. I use 22nd Century natural hair products and honey, they are the best thing that’s EVER happened to my hair and it’s black owned and family operated. I use her shampoo bar, deep conditioner, herbal hair pomade and her twisting cream and my hair has been in the best shape of its life. For a leave in, I use Lush Super Milk Conditioning spray. Omg, not only does it smell heavenly but it leaves my hair extremely soft and moisturized. I spray on my hair and slather on my hair pomade. Moisture for two weeks I promise you!
A big thank you! My daughter has thick high porosity hair and her hair does not like coconut oil but I've recently got some Babassu oil and using your PMP method. It's only been a couple of weeks but its made such a difference!
Organic and cold press are the best to buy, I avoid expeller pressed because heat is normally involved in processing that oil. Heat can remove a lot of the nutrients and benefits that oils naturally come with.
Heyyyy Tonya, I couldn’t wait to relax to day and watch this video. I luv butters on my hair (I use them as a sealant). I use to whip up my own shea butter back in the beginning of my hair journey right after I did my BC. Can’t wait to hear your break down on Hair Grease. Continue to stay healthy and safe 🙏🏾
Oh wow!!!! I am really loving the vibes of uour channel! And I also love the idea of the P&P method. I feel that my hair's porosity (LOW LOW LOW) and my texture (kinky) are reasons why the loc method and other variations as well as moisturizing and sealing methods are reasons why my hair always felt dry. Due to the chemical structure of penetrating products and non penetrating products, i feel that this makes sense: penetrating product, moisturize, non penetrating product! I'm gonna try it! Thank you again!!! And I love butters, but I don't have an absolute favorite for my hair. Soooo....I will have to say peanut butter lol. But shea butter and cocoa butter are amazing for my skin. You all be blessed and thank you again!!!❤🧡💛💚💙💜🤎🖤🤍🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🤗🤗🤗
Girl this is what I needed 🙌🏼🙌🏼 my hair been going through it this winter. I can’t seem to keep it moisturized to save my life and now I know why. Thank you so much u got a new subbie 🤗
I learn so much from your channel! I just started transitioning my hair and I’ve been watching a tjj on of videos over the past few weeks and I must say your videos are just full of information. I’ve been moisturizing my hair with a butter for weeks and I guess this would explain why my hair was always so dry. Thanks again for another great as video
I’d love to see your opinion on the cheapie conditioners such as suave, V05 etc.. maybe even a hair product vlog at dollar tree🤔 love your videos! I appreciate the science behind your videos!!
It would be nice if you talked about silicone serums for sealing vs an oil. Or good oils/butters for people who have scalp conditions, as oils can feed the bacteria on their scalps.
Putting MSM Sulfur on your scalp just before washing will kill the naturally-occurring fungus on the scalp (and then your hair will naturally increase its growth rate!)
Your videos are great. The things I use in my hair work really well, but I never knew why they work so well. Watching your videos have helped explain why my routine works and what products to avoid.
Hello ! What penetrates better in the scalp ? A water based spritz or an oil ? I am asking because I keep hearing that our skin has an hydrolipodic barrier and that water based products actually don’t penetrate it. Please help 🥰🥰
Yes recently bought a huge amount of both raw mango and raw Shea . I use Shea moisture castor oil ans hisbiscus oil leaven in the moisture alongside castor oil, lavender , grape seed oil, argon oil, extra virgin oil oil, extra virgin coconut oil, peeper mint oil and leave in rosemary Mielle conditioner . Thank you for the information . And hair mayo ors, aloe oil, hair oil hair mayo Africas best. I have thin hair .
I went back to using grease, and my hair has never thrived as well as it has now. Even if times change again and grease goes back out of style in the natural hair care community, I will keep using it.
Thanks for another awesome vid and detailed valuable info. You helped me figure my hair issue. I need to wash it more thoroughly and use ligher oil. And I believe in hair grease..grew my hair well
I’m so so happy to have come upon your video! “PMP” gave me sooo much understanding. I’d been doing it but the understanding of it now has solidified the steps of my hair routine in my regimen so I don’t have to test and try which order of things to do anymore. I now understand what works and why! I appreciate you soooo much!
PMP method makes alot more sense than LoC/LCO!!! II say this because it does may it CLEAR the actual purpose of products for each step. I have high porosity hair and penetrate is a must for me, because hygal fatigue. Hygal fatigue is actually real because in the summer, I was constantly spraying my hair with water to give my hair a moisturized look and it would dry again and snap easily, also I would add oils like grapeseed oil thinking it is penetrating but it was really protecting. Currently, I am using Belle BAR organic products such as onion and garlic oil, and BBO argan oil butter, adowa baomint oil, grapseed oil and now avocado oil. How do I create a hair regimen using the PMP method for my hair regmien such as pre poo days, hot oil+deep conditioning and my leave in steps? Thank you so much!!
Would you class Jamaican Caistor Oil as Protection? Going to wash my hair and use what I have. I have: PENETRATION - Coconut Oil MOISTURE - Water PROTECTION - Jamaican Black Castor Oil My hair is a mess and I'm trying to put the strength back in my hair. I had it natural and had to relax it to get employment. I truly regret this! I think natural hair is way easier to manage than relaxed hair and I miss my natural curls. My scalp has grown to hate relaxers because it itches whenever I apply chemicals to it. When it's natural, it's like my scalp is free and doesn't itch at all. Also I noticed that my scalp keeps cleaner for weeks. Greetings from London and loving your educational videos. 💖
Always, enjoy your content. I have low porosity, with thin strands and I use Shea butter ( and heavier oils). My hair loves it. I don't use a lot, enough to seal/protect the moisture/hydration in my hair. The Shea butter I prefer to use is from Natty Naturals.com. I noticed how beautiful your hair before you mentioned it. Can't wait for the p.m.p video. In regards to your next vid---it doesn't matter. I am here for them all. 🤸
Hmmmm I haven't found a butter that I can't live without. I do really love my silicone mix but if I had to pick a butter I'd say tucuuma...it smells nice and has a good slip.
Hello, thank you for the video 💜. Great information! I have a couple of questions that I am hoping you can help me with. I have been researching heat damage caused from blow drying. One thing that I saw was that the cuticle damage occurs because the water is dried too quickly from the hair and the cuticle cracks as a result. I also read that most substances considered heat protectants didn't prevent this. So my two questions are: 1. Do you think (or know) if letting the hair dry most of the way (air, tshirt/towel, etc.) would reduce or prevent these cuticle cracks? 2. If I had to chose one to lower should it be the heat or the air flow? I would think the high air flow causes a more rapid drying than heat at a low flow would but curious about your thoughts. I have read that hair dryers only go up to 140° F (to prevent burning the skin) but then so many hair articles give conflicting ranges (I've seen some claim they can go up to 400° F and an NIH study where the reached a temperature of 203° F). I know the easy answer is to avoid heat altogether but I'm trying to find a balance to keep my hair stretched and blow drying once a month has been very helpful.
I typically stretch my hair by putting it in loose braids after washing and moisturizing. If you do tight braids, it'll take a long time to dry. After the braids dry, your hair will be a little shrunken if you did them loose. Just unloose them, brush your hair with a bit of moisturizer/oil and rebraid. The second time around your hair will become more stretched and smooth. This is a labor intensive process, but, if you're trying to avoid heat damage, it works.
Love! LOVE! LOVE your videos! Thank you Goddess for making us all more knowledgeable! You really connect dots for me! I live for the science of it all! Whichever topic you decide it will be greatness!
Thank you for doing your channel. You have helped me understand the chemicals in my beauty products, especially how to pronounce them. Please continue to inform us which chemicals are ‘safe’ to use on our skin and hair. Thanks and blessings🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
I like coconut oil in my hair along with grape seed oil and castor oil. But that good ole hair grease is definitely making a comeback. Im going back to using Dax. It made my hair flourish when I was a child . We need to stop breaking what worked once for us . If it ain’t broken. Don’t fix it.
I use Jamaican castor and coconut butter. Works great. How do feel about these additives in hair products like phenoxyethanol, Methylisothiazolinone and behentrimonium chloride. They are carcinogenic substances and are they used worldwide in our day to day products.
the internet keep saying that avocado butter is best for low porosity and the oil. i havent heard you mention it so pleased tell me if its a fact before i buy it. loved this Q&A
I love this oil, butter VIDEO 💞. I use raw black soap, Peppermint body wash ( HerbnEden) product, on my hair 😙😙: their peppermint wash is very gd 4 My hair and body. Howevea, I normally use Black soap, coconut oil on my hair bi- wkly.
I thank God for you. I love you. You have inspired me so much to in my current first year in chemistry. Thank you! Could you also discuss the differences between Polysorbate-20 and 80 and how to mix it. Thank you. Be blessed
Great info as usual . What ever topic u talk about is alright with me. You give me knowledge and not some stuff that is made up because you were told about it. I look forward to your video’s☺️
Hello! Thank you very much for your content and the research you put in to obtain the information. Can you please look into the topic of grease on natural hair? Thank you 😊
It’s always an education when I watch your videos. Thank you soo much. I’ll be trying the PMP. One question: can I put the coconut oil on wet hair to do the PMP? PS. Shea butter goes with me on vacation. It’s my go to butter.
I just need to know how to tell if it's still good to use because I'm finding grease in my mother's home that she stopped using years ago so is it smell test that tells me it's okay? Or should I wait to see if the hair falls out?
My hair loves some butters! Shea butter is my go to and I use it on my wet but detailed and sectioned hair. A question I have is does the porosity of your hair change with the temperature water you consistently wash it in?
Hi, what do you recommend for fine high porosity hair? I need the heavy butters to seal but I notice I get breakage when applying it. I think because my strands are fine.
I vote for a hair grease vid please 🙋🏾♀️

Coconut is what my hair is loving right now! :-)
It almost destroyed my hair after a year of using it (too much protein). I switched to shea butter/olive oil and as a result my hair is amazing. See Naptural 85’s video on coconut oil and what it did to her hair.
I would take my butter mix: shea, coconut and olive oil
I use avocado butter! My hair is high density AND high porosity hair and fine strands. Silicones, grease and butters (and oils) are my friends lol as long as I wash weekly (sulfate free shampoo)
Shea butter is my go to. To all, stay safe and be well 💜
I like hair butter for my fine, high porosity strands the best.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us!! Could you touch up on organic, coldpress, and expelled oils vs not and what your thoughts are please?
Organic and cold press are the best to buy, I avoid expeller pressed because heat is normally involved in processing that oil. Heat can remove a lot of the nutrients and benefits that oils naturally come with.
Heyyyy Tonya, I couldn’t wait to relax to day and watch this video. I luv butters on my hair (I use them as a sealant). I use to whip up my own shea butter back in the beginning of my hair journey right after I did my BC.
Can’t wait to hear your break down on Hair Grease.
Continue to stay healthy and safe 🙏🏾
Thank you sis! :-)
I now understand butters, thank you so much!
You are so welcome!
We NEED the PMP video soon, ma’am!
I live for this. I look forward to you creating your own line!
Girl this is what I needed 🙌🏼🙌🏼 my hair been going through it this winter. I can’t seem to keep it moisturized to save my life and now I know why. Thank you so much u got a new subbie 🤗
Chebe butter can change the texture of your hair, by tightening/enhancing your curl pattern (and therefore make it feel course or rough textured).
Great suggestion! :-)
I will love to see a video about this.
Yes, ditto that😊
VHO5 conditioner moisturize my hair so good. It’s surprising as hell.😂
Yes, please! Eight kinky heads in this house- we *need* a dollar store conditioner
It would be nice if you talked about silicone serums for sealing vs an oil. Or good oils/butters for people who have scalp conditions, as oils can feed the bacteria on their scalps.
You need a dermatologist
Putting MSM Sulfur on your scalp just before washing will kill the naturally-occurring fungus on the scalp (and then your hair will naturally increase its growth rate!)
Thank you! I've never tried a butter by itself for styling, but I would take the Curl Enhancing Smoothie which has shea butter in it.
I love me some hair grease. All you need is water, moisturizer and grease. Your hair will last for a week.
Felicia Dunn so true!!
I’d rather stick with butters
All I need is some shea butter, avocado oil and water. grease = extra stiff hair
YES, Felicia!
I went back to using grease, and my hair has never thrived as well as it has now. Even if times change again and grease goes back out of style in the natural hair care community, I will keep using it.
The way cocamidopropylbetaine rolled off the tongue ❤️
Thank you so much for this hun. Was just wondering about which butter is good for my low porosity hair
I can't wait to see your PMP Method. Hair grease.... Hmmm can we have a DIY? I want to formulate my own.
So if u shouldn’t add butters to wet hair then what moisture will that butter seal?? What would be the point of using butter at all?
Looking forward to the PMP video.
So if you aren’t putting butters on wet hair are you putting it on dry hair? Or is it about how wet (damp, wet, soaked)?
Excited for the PMP vid!!
P: Cantu moisturizing cream
M: Water
P: Any type of grease
*I need your opinion, is that the right way to go?* P.S My hair is Thick and High Porosity
I have low porosity but my ends are high porosity and I use cocoa butter on my ends... Lcob method 👌🏿
Would you class Jamaican Caistor Oil as Protection?
Going to wash my hair and use what I have. I have:
PENETRATION - Coconut Oil
MOISTURE - Water
PROTECTION - Jamaican Black Castor Oil
My hair is a mess and I'm trying to put the strength back in my hair.
Thank you Cara!
So my two questions are:
I'm late to the party. Just finding out about your channel. Thanks for the simplicity of your delivery. Will tell others. Subscribed!😊
Love! LOVE! LOVE your videos! Thank you Goddess for making us all more knowledgeable! You really connect dots for me! I live for the science of it all! Whichever topic you decide it will be greatness!
Thank you!! :-D
Thank you for doing your channel. You have helped me understand the chemicals in my beauty products, especially how to pronounce them. Please continue to inform us which chemicals are ‘safe’ to use on our skin and hair. Thanks and blessings🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
I've never stop using hair grease💯
Probably a little mixture I get off Etsy but I think it's mostly coconut and shea butter. It's a mix. So it's one thing I would bring!
You just dropping knowledge and I appreciate it.
Thank you! :-)
Thank you Kelsey!! :-)
Hello! Thank you very much for your content and the research you put in to obtain the information. Can you please look into the topic of grease on natural hair? Thank you 😊
Love your videos. You and Green Beauty are brilliant.
It’s always an education when I watch your videos. Thank you soo much. I’ll be trying the PMP. One question: can I put the coconut oil on wet hair to do the PMP?
PS. Shea butter goes with me on vacation. It’s my go to butter.
Coconut oil on wet hair, yes! Because it melts immediately and it combs through the hair easily. :-D

3-Speak Well
4-Relatable
Me.Tanya, you need your own TV Show!!!!
I would definitely have Jamaican castor oil with me that is the go-to for me makes my head feel so fabulous
Hair grease video, please! I love the knowledge you share in a version I can understand 💕
Shea butter is a holy grail for me ✨
Thank for educating us!!!! Your information is always appreciated 😊
Hair grease is making a comeback its slowly creeping its way back...
I'm happy. If it anit broke don't fix it. Black women used grease for years and their hair thrived.
Jayla Anderson YESS! Better stock up now because the prices inflate lol
The best explanation to the LOC method and why it works best for my thick hair. Thank you so much.
Hi, what do you recommend for fine high porosity hair? I need the heavy butters to seal but I notice I get breakage when applying it. I think because my strands are fine.
She made a video on the best oils for your porosity and strand thickness that could answer your question. She does mention shea butter.
I’m so happy I sound you I have thick low porosity hair, and it’s hard to find people who do online!
Do essential oils alter butters when blended together?
Alter butters? To my knowledge, no. If anything the scent will be more towards the essential oil since they're so concentrated.
I’m so glad I found your channel!!!
U make hair care fun and less complicated. Science helps you understand the why behind something.
