If anyone doesn’t think modeling is a talent needs to see Elizabeth! So talented. She connects not only with you, but knows her job is to connect with anyone who will look at those images. I felt her all the way over here. I mean did you see the way she looked at me 😏😉😂
I very much agree with the lens glare in the backlit situations. The solution I came up with was to put a sunscreen diffuser around the camera front area to put the lens under the shade. It's extra equipment and extra effort but it seems to be working for me.
Update of my comment from 3 years ago ! LOL Today (3 years later), Sigma Art lenses made me stay in the Sony alpha system ! My most used and beloved lenses are all Sigma Art... This 105mm f/1.4, the amazing 35mm f/1.2 DG DN and the 24-70 f/2.8 DG DN which is at least as good as the Sony GM, if not better ! I bought the 105mm after having seen your test 3 years ago and I'll never regret my decision !
I'd love to see you do a lens review of this lens on an a6000 just to know how it would perform on a lesser body. Yes, crop factor and all. The problem with the fantastic glass is that it's always paired with the best cameras. Glass is always more important than a good body so this would be beneficial to those who can only afford one out of both camera and body. Thanks for this review.
Pretty often, it's the camera bottlenecking the glass and not the other way around. Those high end mft lenses are pointless for all but the absolutely best cameras imo. Maybe that's being generous, maybe it's true for all mft cameras.
Manny, solid review on this lens. I think many people have been on the fence, including myself, and I appreciate you keeping it objective - don’t lose that. Waiting for your photo walk in Chicago bro!
Hi Manny, I finally added this lens to my arsenal, and the photos I get from it are just amazing! With my 28-70mm f/2 and 135mm f/2, I’m now selling my EF 50mm f/1.2 and 85mm f/1.2. I’m also considering getting the 200mm f/2 and maybe selling my 70-200mm f/2.8. I absolutely love the images I capture with prime lenses. Thank you again for posting videos like this. I really appreciate the honest reviews of all the other products. Thank you so much!
105mm f/1.4 That's my dream focal length & aperture combo. The working distance is perfect all the while getting that shallow depth of field and low light. For how I shoot, a 105mm f/1.4 is more versatile than a 85mm f/1.2 & 135mm f/1.8. It has the best of both worlds. Unlike a 35mm f/1.2, which never seems to isolate the subject enough like a 50mm f/1.2 nor is it wide enough like a 24mm f/2.8. A 35mm seems more of a compromise where as a 105mm is "the sweet spot" or "best of both worlds" type of lens.
Yeah rented one this week and it is a beast. Minimum editing needed. Agreed on the focusing in backlight and low light focusing performance. I didn't run into too much of the football bokeh as you did. Awesome lense, just don't know how's it's gonna fit in my bag if I actually purchase it....lol
Hey Manny … I’m a first time viewer and new sub. I like your approach to reviews, you had covered one hell of a lot of information in a relative short time while keeping it relaxed and entertaining. You’re pretty darn good at this stuff. I look forward to browsing through your catalog of videos and photos. Cheers, Dave
Hey Manby I've watched a lot of lens reviews by different people but yours are the best! Clear, well presented, no screaming/hyped up, and plenty of great images. So thank you from Oxford in the UK 👍🏿
They don't need to see his exposure settings. Because they would be different wherever we are. They're talking about his camera set up settings. All the details. Going deep inside the camera.
I have all 3 focal length (technically, Zeiss 85mm Milvus, Nikkor 105mm 1.4e and Fujifilm 90mm f/2 (137mm equivalent for my Fujifilm) and generally I would say the 85mm is the most practical for general use (though owning a manual 85mm f/1.4 with a DSLR, not so much). It just allows for use in more confined space, when compared to the long focal lengths. People think about ultimate optical performance far too much and forget practicality (I have been guilty of this with the Zeiss Milvus). In my late 40's, I would much prefer to have a slightly lighter lens that gives 90% of the quality than a lens, than a heavier lens that will stay in my bag at home because I don't want to carry it around. Out of the 3 lenses, if I have to leave the house I will go with the Fujifilm every time, it may not quite have the bokah of the Zeiss 85mm or Nikkor 105mm (though it suffers less cats eyes) but I want to go out and take photos with the lens, which I don't with the other 2 lenses.
I agree. There's a reason why the 85mm is so popular. It's not because it's the best. It's because it's so practical due to space limitations as you say but also with how far away you are from the model. You start being out at 105 and 135 and you're just not as connected to the model. I think photographers who are more technical are more willing to be further away. And photographers who are more creative and personal and right side of the brain like to be closer.
Thanks for the video Manny! I know you mentioned that the bokeh balls are not round and like oval, I think this is very interesting and maybe the did it on purpose to make the bokeh look like anamorphic? Coz I'd love to have an anamorphic AF lens, it's just missing the horisontal lens flares.... what do you think?
If I would say the huge size of the Sigma 105mm doesn't matter, would you prefer the Sony 85mm 1.4 GM or this lens to shoot with the A7iii? I am staying infront of a hard decision. Both lenses have their pros and cons in my opinion, but I really like the focal length of 105mm.
You are the BEST Manny...do you prefer 105 1.4 or 135 1.8 art? And then...i would start to make video...what do you think about sony a6500? In couple with 18 35 1.8 sigma?
And now I have the issue where the 85 f/1.8 is plenty for me, but I REEEAAAALLLYYY want this lens. Not even in a rush to get it either, so saving money isn't the problem.
About lenses I prefer 85mm , the Sigma erase the background. I like some background, some ambient-site in the photo. And Sigma is too huge. If I need long range lens I prefer Canon 135mm f2. Check Jason Lanier (Hawaii) using this Canon. I don't need this huge amount of blurr (bokeh). I just need enough to separate the model from the background, not to erase the background. My favorite lens:. Sigma 35mm art, Sony 55mm z, Sony 85mm 1.8, Tamron 28-70 2.8, Canon 135mm 2.0, are good lenses and a lot cheaper than Sony GM.
I love the lens. I have the 85mm DN and the Sony 135GM .. I went got a used 105mm art Canon mount. Works well with my Fuji XT4 and the mc11 (4/2021) It will not travel in my camera bag. it is strictly portrait sessions. It will come in it’s own camera bag. Also, I’m mounting it on Manfrotto neotec monopod bracket/squeeze adjustment with the easy release. At some point I have make a decision on the 135 which I love.
I have the Nikkor 24-120 mm f.4 lens which works well in backlight situations, and it's very sharp. The only reason I'd consider the Sigma is for speed in low-light situations.
Just got this lens today, and the images are amazing I use to use photoshop to help blow out my background but with this lens it does it all on its on.
I have been confused about what to buy whether it should be 85mm 105mm! but I think i am going to go for 105mm.. I know it would work beautifully for portraits in wedding with Godox Ad600bm. Thanks for the awesome review
Can anyone explain why Manny has the focal point on the eye at 1:08 ? Or maybe what is that green square? I'm a beginner and have been picking up on small things like this. Is this a type of technique for portrait shooting? Any information is much appreciated!! Thanks!!
Ohhdang Not sure I understand. That's Sony's Eye-AF. It'll latch onto a person's eye (within limits). He's focusing on the model's eye, which is pretty standard. Does that help, or am I not quite getting what you're asking?
I'm sorry about this Manny but Elizabeth is by far the best model you have used! Wow is she not only beautiful but really knows how to pose! I would love to see how you edit these. If you ever need as assistant, I am just across the bottom of the lake in Michigan City. I can be there in an hour!
Maybe I will look into this lens if I can hook this up to my canon? Your photography is always beautiful. I use my 35mm art for all of my sessions right now
Great video as always but sod the lens lets talk about Elizabeth, she an absolute bobby dazzler, got to be one of the best models you work with, great looks, great curves and fantastic personality, keep the vids coming :)
Don’t forget about comparing it with the Sigma 135mm! I’d take that over the 105mm just due to the size. You’d figure 135mm at 1.8 would be just as good as 105mm at 1.4 due to the longer focal length.
I have the Samyang and it's a wonderful lens. A real gem. Sharp wide open, nice rendering and details. Slight blooming effect when light sources are in the frame, but it's not that bad, and it's a 135, so not that hard to avoid. Fits great into a small fast-ish prime kit, too. I usually bring it with my Batis 25 and Sony 55. Makes for pretty good steps, especially with the cropping ability of an A7R series camera. As far as comparing it to the Sigma 105, I'd expect the Sigma to be sharper. Also, it's one stop faster and slightly shorter, so if you shoot in low light without a tripod you'll get more light in and possibly will be able to use slightly longer exposures, unless the lens is so unwieldy that it makes no difference. I don't think that the difference in IQ is so big as to make it or break it, but having AF or not certainly can make a big difference between the two lenses. As much as I love the Samyang, it would be nice to use eye AF with the Sigma instead of zooming in as I focus.
True but those are usually the top things people look for when purchasing a lens. On top of sharpness, I think chromatic aberration and flaring is important as well.
One problem when using extremely sharp lenses for portraiture is you better have subjects with flawless skin and incredibly good makeup artists because it will show off those imperfections extremely well. You will end up spending a lot of time retouching in post. That is one reason I prefer using old vintage lenses designed for film cameras because they give a beautiful dreamy, flattering glow to skin on women.
Love you manny, you always provide what's matter, now can u do a quick comparison on a crop body? both 85 and 105 planing on switching to 105 from 85 on crop
@@DEGAtv most recent photoshoots I use the 105 more than the 85 & 135. For business events I use the 135 more for the shots o used to use my 70-200 since it is a full stop at 1.8 vs 2.8 and lighter. I only use the 70-200 when I need the max zoom of 200mm.
@@DEGAtv the separation of the subject from background is what I love from this lenses and it is razor sharp at f1.4, I don't have to back up as far as when I'm using the 135 f1.8 for full length body shot
Not sure if it's the YT compression, but it looks like it lacks contrast. Looking at the cloths and hair they lack the natural pop I'm use to in RAWs. Once edited of course they shine, but I love when clients see the back of the camera and give me that "WOW!".
I was so hesitant about buying this lens, because I already had the Sony 90 2.8 macro and could get the Sony 85 1.8 for a good price but I got this Sigma anyways as it was on sale here in Sweden and I don't regret a single moment. For 1070 USD (after the 20% sale and 25% VAT cashback because I have a business), it was a steal. I love the working distance, I love the weight and the feeling in the Pictures you take are Amazing. There's a Little lack of contrast and the bokeh balls can be a Little to distracting sometimes, but when you are in optimal conditions, wow. 135 would be to limiting for me as I want to take staff headshots inside, sometimes in crammed rooms and 85 mm seems too casual, too common and not extremely, extremely diffferent from my 55. Love the jump from 55 to 105.
@@princeharbinger I haven't compared them in a very detailed way, but the 90 mm at f/2.8 seems to be the sharper lens for subjects 1 to 3 m away than the 105 mm at f/1.4, the sharpness gets worse at infinite focus. Keep in mind I use a 24 mpix A7iii. It's crazy sharp, and at f/4, it is pretty much as good as it gets. Such an underrated lens, if you're a portrait photographer that shoots pictures with small apertures, I would go with the 90. The softer colours in the 90 are also better for portrait I believe, but the bokeh is pretty bad. Harsh, and sometimes they have very weird shapes. The 105 has more elements so I don't think it can be just as sharp, but maybe I will make a review on both and also a detailed comparison?
Someone told me this is a "Client Lens" You have it on the camera when you go for the photography job once they see how big it is you get the job. :)
Never thought of that, that is actually brilliant haha
EVERY SINGLE TIME
That's why my Brain always choose this in place of 85mm😁

I keep coming back to your videos. Straight to the point honest takes without trying to sell me on equipment.

Bro, I almost spit my dentures out when a football appeared on the screen and I heard out of nowhere, “HIKE!” 😂😂😂
Manny can you please make a video on how to do a good framing?
Great review (as always) fellow Chicagoan! You think of aspects and nuances that are on my mind, so your reviews are so perfect.
Great shots! She’s amazing, that hair wow! And just imagine she’s walking around in her natural habitat looking that good all the time
It would be awesome if u do a video how u edit photos. Cheers
Yeah, I want to see his editing workflow too. He might have some older editing videos.
@Al Castill oh for sure I understand that, but I still think he had a few basic editing videos.

Love this. Love the longer video. Appreciate the effort that goes into these.
Thanks Robert. So many have been asking for longer content so that’s what I’m trying to deliver
I just got my 105 last week. Can't wait to get some work in with it!! Thanks for doing these reviews, Manny!! Happy Holidays, bro.

Great video & amazing photos! Forgive me for asking what is the background song from 5:15 on? Artist Ooyy? Thanks in advance.
Elizabeth Wheeland and a Manny Ortiz video. Name a more iconic duo. I'll wait.
Always love how you're so straight to the point. A sub from me yes sir!
Would you choose this Sigma lens over the FE:70-200/2.8 GM ? Please make a video on Sigma 105/1.4 art vs 70-200/2.8 GM
With that lens the cops would probably stop me lmao.
James Taylor LMAO
Hahaha😂😂
Dang Manny! Those shots were nuts!! Killer video man!
This chick is everything and your pictures are dope!
I just recently bought this lens. LOVE and thank you for always giving such great content!
Great review Manny as usual , I'd love to see the 105 vs 135 art .

But could you do a video how you set up your camera settings page by page for portraits?
@ jenijerom totally agree with you!
@@jamestaylor954 yeah, it would be awesome if he did that 😊🤞

That backlit shot at 1:40 AMAZING!
you're the best to do it . much love brother

Don’t forget about comparing it with the Sigma 135mm! I’d take that over the 105mm just due to the size. You’d figure 135mm at 1.8 would be just as good as 105mm at 1.4 due to the longer focal length.
135 also produce more blurred background...
There's more to lenses than the focal length and the maximum aperture.
True but those are usually the top things people look for when purchasing a lens. On top of sharpness, I think chromatic aberration and flaring is important as well.
@@PavelR2 135 or 105 produces more pleasing blur? have you tested them both? i think 105 is more pleasing whats your thought
I have Sigma medium telephoto trinity, the 85mm, 105mm and 135mm. They all have their uses
Which is your favorite/most used?
@@DEGAtv most recent photoshoots I use the 105 more than the 85 & 135. For business events I use the 135 more for the shots o used to use my 70-200 since it is a full stop at 1.8 vs 2.8 and lighter. I only use the 70-200 when I need the max zoom of 200mm.
@@QuyTranPhotography why do you use the 105 more?
@@DEGAtv the separation of the subject from background is what I love from this lenses and it is razor sharp at f1.4, I don't have to back up as far as when I'm using the 135 f1.8 for full length body shot
Another great video Manny. I have 100mm 2.8, should i get 85mm 1.4 or 135mm 2.0?
I honestly didn't pay any attention when Elizabeth is on screen. She's the kinda girl to die for.. love her so much...
Hey Adrian, have you had a chance to compare the 105 to the 90 yet? Which has better PQ?
Wow, You mentioned all the things i wanted to know about it :)) great review
Any chance you could do an editing video? Or even just some tips. I'm curious how you processed those back lit shots.
