    Hmmm - on „no other“: I really love my Nikon 105/1.4. Its even a bit smaller/lighter (OK, a bit more expensive too) and has been available a few months earlier. And it also fully delivers already at f/1.4. It also IS my main go-to lens, not to big/heavy.

    • @andikunar7183

      @@jaegerschtulmann I cannot comment on the sharpness of the Sigma at all.
      I can however comment, that the Nikkor 105/1.4G on my D850 is quite sharp to me. And sharper than everything else I own or have tried on D8xx cams for my people/beauty photography use-cases with wide-open aperture. But only whenever I don't mis-focus (for whatever reasons). So I'm really totally happy with the lens+cam combo, unlike with prior lenses. My currently perceived remaining main source of imperfection/issues is behind the viewfinder.

      Don't mean to burst your bubble, I've compared the sigma 105 with the nikon 105, the sigma is a little sharper, wide open, but the nikon more portable. Sigma also has a nicer rendering IMHO. The best part of the Sigma 105mm 1.4 is that it's available on all modern mounts, not an exclusive portrait lens like nikon's 105 or Canon's 85mm 1.2 lenses. I switched to a panasonic s5 from Canon RF, to escape the oligarchy (prices) and monopoly of great glass of first party. Plus I like saying I'm part of the L MOOOUUUNNT ALLLIAAANCE! :)

    I have this lens and Canon RF 28-70 f2.0 and RF 70-200 f2.8. All three lenses are superb in sharpness but I have to say Sigma 105mm 1.4 is the sharpest given that it's a prime lens. It has been the lens of choice for the majority of my portrait works. That F 1.4 bokeh is so awesome.

    I’ve had this lens for the past two years I had it for my Nikon Z bodies and when I switched to Sony this year I picked up a Sony version and I use it and the Sony 135 gm for all my portraits. I had it on my Sony a9for an entire wedding and the results were phenomenal. Yes it got heavy after eight hours but now I only use it for the couples and group photos of the bridal parties and bride & groom. I highly recommend this lens. It works great and it’s super sharp wide-open. I take It on all my senior portrait sessions

      @@PFB-yo6wi I use the sigma 105 f1.4 or the 135gm for all my outside portraits. If I have the room I will use the 135 GM for an entire engagement session. It’s so fast and sharp and I love the look of the 135. But the 105 just brings that tack sharp wide open. I use it for most of my senior portraits. The bokeh is stunning. If I could only choose one it’s the 135 gm. But the good thing is I don’t have to choose I got both of them lol. Each one has their own look to the photos and my clients love that my backgrounds and the total look of the photo don’t look like other photographers in my area. Hope this helps

      @@PFB-yo6wi are used to be all about using the 70 to 200 when I first started out using Nikon. When I switched over to Sony it was one of the first lenses I picked up. I would always shoot at 200 mm. I love the compression. But as a matured as a photographer it’s not always making The background looking like color blobs of you having no idea what the background actually is. I picked up the 135 mm GM and I have only touch my 70 to 200 once in the past seven months. I really wasn’t impressed with the first version and when they came out with the newest 70-200 gm ii, I was thinking about ordering it but then I sat and realized I already have two lenses that I paid over $2000 that I don’t use already. Why pay for another one. That’s just me not saying anything how are you should do anything but that 135 mm G master and 105f1.4 spoiled me. I use the 135mm for everything like portraits, sports events, and I just used it for a client taking action shots of their dogs running towards me and it blew my mind on the A9.

    Thanks for the cool videos every time I love your kind of videos
    You have also tested the Sigma 85mm 1.4, you would say that the Sigma 85mm 1.4 DG DN can work with the Sigma 105
    keep up with bokeh, sharpness or are they equivalent?
    I'm not sure which lens to use the 85mm DG DN is now much more compact and convenient for movies
    but i don't want to compromise when taking pictures
    would you say the photo, sharpness and bokeh quality are equally good?

      @@PavSZ an interesting cheap way for *video makers* to get a similar FOV is using the standard Lumix 85mm f/1.8 in APSc mode to get a field of view of around 127mm and an effective DOF of f/2.8. I think people should try something like this before committing to a lens like this haha. Who knows, maybe they'll find they like wider lenses better.

    • @fellowcitizen
      @fellowcitizen 3 года назад

      Apparently, the size reduction benefit of DG DN is greater for wide lenses and lesser for long lenses, so it may not be much smaller or lighter. On the other hand, the 85mm DG DN was far smaller so perhaps - although they attributed that to new techniques for incorporating the very large aperture mechanism, and to the use of some computational correction for distortion etc.

    Good video! But in my opinion the Bokeh auf the Sigma 105/1.4 lens is not very smooth... so no, it is not the best portrait lens. The Nikon AF-S 105/1.4 looks less distracting in out of focus areas and is sharp too. Maybe not as sharp wide open, but the sharpness comparison would need 100% pixel-peep nitpicking. I would prefer the better balance of sharpness, bokeh and weight/handling.

    • @PavSZ
      @PavSZ  2 года назад

      Don't we all want better balance of sharpness, bokeh and weight/handling? 😉
      It's all very subjective, especially when it comes to bokeh. What makes great bokeh? the smoothness, how blurred it is, the shape of it, all of it? We all like different things and different things appeal to different people.

      Have both. Sold the GM because it was sitting in my lens storage all the time, picked the Sigma out over the GM almost every time I needed a 100mm/135mm. Sigma just pumps out magic, neither the GM nor any of my other 100, 105 and 135 lenses compete with it. I have the old and legendary Hasselblad Carl Zeiss 100mm and Sigma even beats the heck out of that lens too. The lens is just pure magic and character. Something about the glass makes the images very, very similar to the ''best portrait lens ever made'' aka. Hasselblad Carl Zeiss Planar 80mm f2.8 but holy damn is it heavy... It's like attaching another camera body to your camera body. All worth though, I would still go with this lens even if it weighed as much as a 600mm f4... It's just that good. I just dropped mine 2 days ago from a 70 meter bridge while in the middle of a session... Had to watch some videos to reassure myself that the weight trade in favor of image quality is worth it, before ordering another one!

    Have the Sigma 105mm on a D850 and to be honest I'm struggling with this lens. If the light is not of a certain quality it fails to deliver. I have other Sigmas - the 50mm art which is almost the bread and butter lens, and when it comes to sport nothing beats the Nikon 70-200 f./2.8 - so button line - if you consider buying this lens, rent or borrow it first. My advice would be to consider their 85mm or 135mm which is equally or even sharper than the 105mm .... the 105mm is heavy and with no VR which means a lot when trying to shoot at 105mm on a High Pixel Camera -!!!

    • @jliang70
      @jliang70 2 года назад

      My experience is quite opposite, I have used both Sony A1 and A7 RIV both are high resolution format cameras, A7RIV is a 61MP camera, I certainly don't consider any of the Sony GM 85 or 135 or Sigma 50 or 85 mm or 135mm sharper than 105mm, in fact Sigma 105mm and 40mm are the sharpest lens I have ever used. Flair is a problem with this lens, to some it lacks the character of some other lenses but it has a decided neutral presentation. It is heavy but using 105mm on a Sony A7 R series and A1 is never a problem without image stablisation on the lens.

    Thanks, Pav - another great video! I rarely take portraits but I do use quality portrait-ish lenses for landscape and environmental abstracts and so I'm not one to pigeon-hole 'portrait only' lenses into a single photography use group. As you demonstrated in this video there are so many other great uses for this lens. Anyone else use this lens for subjects other than portraiture? BTW, I use a tripod about 90% of the time and understand this is not a lens to carry on a five mile hike. ;)

In any case, I tried it and I didn't really like it all that much, probably because I mostly shoot on location and even when I'm using artificial light, I still shoot at or around f2.8 because I use LEDs and white/yellow gel plates, I don't use strobes. It's more of a specialized lens for anyone who does not mind loss of 2 stops of light from the f2.8 because the 2.8 on that lens is equal to 5.6, so if you want to shoot on f8, you just close the lens to f4 and you're already at f8. That's not really what I want from a lens in that price point.

    Unfortunately, I cannot agree here. I had a lot of lenses, be it Nikon or Sony. The Sony 135mm 1.8GM is by far the best lens for portraits. The Sigma 105mm F1.4 Art is awesome in terms of bokeh, but the contrast behavior was extremely weak in backlighting, the images often very pale. Even my Nikon Af-S 58mm F1.4G did a better job here.

However, I enjoyed the review! :D Thank you.

    • @PavSZ
      @PavSZ  3 года назад

      It's not true at all. I had this discussion with Sigma on several occasions, they want me to be honest and say what I feel about their lenses, even if it is bad. They never have any input on anything I say in my videos and my opinion won't affect my relationship with them.
      On the other hand, I shoot with a lot of different lenses from a lot of different brands and quality wise Sigma lenses are up there with the best.
      Some people slag lenses off just because they can and don't really even justify it by variety of samples shot with them.
      I have used truly bad lenses in the past and made them work professionally - this lens in comparison to anything else is a Rolls Roys of all lenses. Sorry for being honest.
