    The first composition with the model on his feet was an Apple and Oranges comparison. In the 135mm shot the model was farther away which heavily impacts the intensity of the bokeh. I wish I saw that first shot with the model’s body having the same size vs frame ratio.

    Sorry, man. I found this interesting but not very useful. The trick effects were distracting and the actual comparison videos were too brief. From my point of view, you get an A for creativity but a D for usefulness for someone who is shopping to buy and looking at both lenses. You got style, man ! But I was looking for data.

  • @alfoutdoors9660
    @alfoutdoors9660 3 года назад +29

    Derrel I noticed your model was much further away with the 135/1.8 shots at the start, when he was standing, but noticeably smaller in the frame too, and this has given the shallower DOF advantage to the 105/1.4...Ideally you should try to frame your model identically with both lenses if you want to make a fair comparison of each lenses Bokeh quality. In the seconf series, where he was sitting, you made the same mistake with the framing again as there has clearly been framed smaller in the 135mm shot. (look at the extra space above his head).

    I rented both of them and the 135 up close headshots just melts the background at f1.8. I love the compression of it. But the 105 just puts that magical touch to the background at F1.4 that it’s so hard to describe but when you see it you know your clients are gonna love the shot. So I bought The 105mm and use it on my Z6 almost religiously. I’ve barely use my 85 mm or my 70-200 anymore. In the 105 mm also is a lot easier to use and close quarters or spots with limited space. Great video missed seeing your videos

    No doubt Sigma 105 1.4 is the King Portrait lens. The background and foreground compression is like a middle frame lens. The color also is amazing. The sharpness is incredible @1.4.

      @@donzokor5312 I'll probably get the Sony 135mm too. Three main reasons, first it's smaller and lighter than the sigma 105. Second the autofocus is better in low light and I'd probably be annoyed if a lens as costly as these had a weakness. Lastly the 135mm focuses closer which makes the Sony more versatile as it's so much more than just a portrait lens. I've seen some incredible flower images with the Sony 135

    If you want to get a good 135mm the Minolta 135mm f2.8 will work but you need to get the adapter for it A-Mount to E-Mount. If you want a 135mm f2.8 very cheap there is the Minolta 135mm f2.8 manual focus lens. Also Vivitar has a good 135mm f2.8. Old school Vivitar has a lot of good lens. When the owner died the company went down hill and started making cheap stuff.

    Nice job... you are pretty good ad it.... Both Sigma lenses are pretty great..... at one point it depend what someone like to use... for head shoot 135 is pretty hard to beat.... full length 135 or 105 does a great job, like I said it's a matter of opinion and what feel better in your hand and the way you see the shoot... The lenses comparaison are a bit off do and can mislead, 135mm should be closest to the subject not farther away compare to the 105 shoot..... It's the basic if you take a 70-200mm lenses and shoot at 105 and take the same shoot at 135mm you will be me more in, not out.... From what i saw, you have more an eye for the 105mm....i have more a eye for the 135mm but again to shoot closer to the subject.... and a really close head shoot with a 135mm , always have a impact..........As you know the focal of the lens either for portrait or fashion is also use to compress everything, subject to the background and every part of the face closer together(nose to the cheek bone, etc) so we work with 300mm and 600mm... of course outside shoot, but when the space permit it, indoor it's pretty great.... But again some always talk about being closer to the subject so they are more in communication with the model.. i'm not one of them... When you have a good relation, understanding with the model, doesn't matter the distance... also, some model don't like a photographer to be in their face.

    How do you pronounce it? Most people say that it is pronounced “bow” (like a bow tie) and “keh” (like the “ke” in Kelvin) with equal emphasis on each syllable. Photo Technique added the “h” to the word “boke” to help readers pronounce it correctly as they understood it. However, are several articles on the Internet from Japanese speakers that say the last syllable should be pronounced like “kay.” 👍

    The sigma 105 1.4 is a beast; such an optical perfection. I pair it with the sony 135 GM and oh man you can take some incredible shots with them both. I couldn't decide what to keep so I kept both :) Also recently added the sigma 85 1.4 dg dn which has really surprised me just how good it is for it's smaller size. It's only downfall is the distortion but honestly I don't even like using the lightroom lens profile. I feel it does too much correction sometimes and that pincushion distortion can make someone look bit more flattering.

    I'm glad you asked Derrel because "BOW-KAH" is indeed the correct pronunciation of Bokeh, as it comes from the Japanese word for blur, which is Bokashi, pronounced "BOW-CASH-EE", which has simply been shortened to Bokeh for non Japanese speaking people ("Bo" sounds like the bow in "long bow" and "keh" sounds like "Car" but with the R cut short).
    There are a lot of people on youtube who get it wrong and lets face it they sound kind of stupid when they do, so at least you know now and can sound like a pro who know's his stuff 👍
    The worst pronunciation of Bokeh I have heard so far was "BOH-KEE"! 🙄
