I freaking love this lens. I sold my 85 and 135 primes because I kept going back to this middle telephoto focal length and just love what it does to subjects. And the optical quality is insane.

I tried it and you're right, my lens didn't break up at f/4!

I’ve owned this lens for 2 years and it’s the only one I use. I want a wider angle, I step way back, I wand less bokeh, I raise my aperture. My clients are always the first ones to notice how amazing the images look. This is THE lens!

This has to be one of the best all round lens reviews with compositional tips etc included I have ever seen. Took away so many tips and it just goes to show, even after many years in the field, there's always something new to learn! I'll be using some of these techniques in my wedding portraits in coming weeks.
    Many thanks from the UK.

If I would say the huge size of the Sigma 105mm doesn't matter, would you prefer the Sony 85mm 1.4 GM or this lens to shoot with the A7iii? I am staying infront of a hard decision. Both lenses have their pros and cons in my opinion, but I really like the focal length of 105mm.

I rented the sigma 105 mm F1.4 and adapted it to my Nikon z6. It worked fantastic on the Z6 with the FTZ adapter. It is so sharp wide open I was truly impressed with that. The bokeh is insane!?! It turns everything in the background into a water color painting. It just melts the background. I used it for seven days and I have seven photo sessions. I never took it off of my Z6 the whole time. I got used to the weight of it. It is a little chunky monkey but there’s so much glass inside of it it’s worth it. My only complaint is if my subject has rough skin or make up covering blemishes it shows it seems so much it is too sharp . So it made me do more editing to hide all that. But if you have fair skin and doing children’s portraits this lens is a beast and so for all of my clients are just so happy with the results. All said and done I would highly recommend it and I am going to be saving up to purchase it.

Its a heavy bugger! my arms hurt in 1 hour of straight shooting, but i love shooting from a good distance in very low light high ISO, i was used to shooting with a Nikon D3 max 6400 ISO, a7riii and sigma 105 f1.4 makes me shoot 1/100 sec up to 32,000 (getting the shot is more important than a perfect clean pic for what i do).

Yeah but the title is terrible, I mean really, how to use a lens? If you don't know how to use a lens like this than you should not be buying one and you should maybe instead take some classes or find a new hobby or career path lol. You mount this lens and use it just like you would any other lens and this lens isn't really that big or heavy. Now my 400mm f2.8 VR, thats a big lens, this is just chunky. I'm not trying to insult beginners but this is not a beginners lens and I find this video and it's title a little weird, because it seems targeted towards beginners. I don't get it, really this is not a starter lens or kit lens so why?

    • @Jnez32

@@patricksmith2553 Why isn't it a starter lens? Like you said "You mount this lens and use it just like you would any other lens and this lens isn't really that big or heavy."

    • @patricksmith2553
      @patricksmith2553 5 лет назад

@@ajbid805 Well I think thats kinda common sense, beginner's wouldn't really be buying a lens like this unless they wanted lots of out of focus images. This is a lens for professionals that know how to use it, it has extremely shallow depth of field and movement on your part or the model's part results in bad images. Razor thin depth of filed is something that takes skill to achieve good results with and or a fast FPS camera. Sure if you take images at 10fps of something while attempting AF you may get a couple in focus. However for a starter lens I would recommend amateurs and beginners get something like an 85mm f1.8 lens or something similar. AF fine tuning also is important with a lens like this, especially since it's a Sigma and sample variety can be spotty at times with third party.

i know i'm late for the train, but what are your thoughts for astrophotography with this lens? i have the sigma art 14mm 1.8 and it seems like it's hard to control building distortion. i realize you can't get the entire milky way in the shot with the 105, but you could get the core, which is at the bottom.

Amazing lens. I had it for 3 weeks and photos do definitely have wow factor: sharp wide open and buttery bokeh. Only thing holding me back is that it doesn't fit in my camera bag 😆 seriously - it takes so much room that I'm considering a new larger back. But by far the best portrait lens I've used - despite I'm Sony user and 105mm version is not natively designed for Sony. At the moment a new Samyang 85mm is fitting in my bag.

... and shooting with one hand (if you're holding prism etc. with another) is next to impossible after few shots.

Hello. I did enjoy the video indeed. May I kindly ask you a question? I'm a professional photographer but I'm using only analogue cameras for 23 years of my career (yes, I'm old, I'm 44). What is the software you're showing here on your screen? Is it some new version of photoshop? I know very little about digital photography, sorry. Gooing digital means learning all this complex software I can't imagine if I'll live long enough to learn it, haha. Best wishes, Adam

I think the answer your looking for is NO - this is a fixed Focal length at 105mm - Not a zoom lens

i love my 105mm literally benched my 85 1.2 tryna justify keeping it ive yet to use it since getting the 105 so i think im putting my 85mm up for sale and upgrading some studio gear

Why would i have to calibrate a lens after spending sooo much money on a 105 and 135 Art ....?

You can’t have your Pye and eat it too. I seen this lens at ShutterFest 24 and I’m going to buy it when I return home.

I guess you didn't mind the lens being sharp in the corners when you put your subjects there in the wall scene.

Pye, don’t you wanna switch to a smaller mic? 🤔

    I will keep my Nikon 105mm f2.8 macro af-s.
I'm sure I can get similar but not as good shots

the sigma is super sharp and has some uniqueness in the rendering that is one of the things it has going for it aside from 1.4. i had it for awhile.
