I love Sigma lenses and I wanted to get the 85 so bad but it was so big and expensive. I went with Sony 85 1.8 FE which I got pretty cheap, however, I always feel like I'm getting way less that I could with the Sigma. Plus I never miss focus with my Sigma 50 1.4 but with my Sony, I focus on the eyes and it's "hello" chest or neck or whatever.
I don’t own Sony camera but I still enjoy watching this XD

Just placed order on the new sigma 85 1.4 dg dn. What an amazing new lens. Sigma is really pushing out some great glass lately that's much more compact than what they used to do. They need to keep making smaller lenses like this that's priced well.

The sigmas may be heavy at times but it does an amazing job when it comes to portraits and videography
the new Sigmas arent that heavy, lighter than their GM competition.
I love the colors and contrast that come out of the sigma when compared to the sony.
Other way around for me, like by far. And i own the sigma.

I was considering the Sony FE 85 1.8, over the 85GM, & the Sigma Art 85 1.4. Then they threw this at me, I would've still taken the taken the FE 1.8 just coz its lighter, cheaper, sharp, & I shoot my 1.4s at 1.8 anyway.. but this new Sigma 85 aside from being sharper is actually faster, with better flare control, & has less chromatic aberrations.
I'm probably buying this, the only thing I need to settle is if I really want to trade in all those advantages for something that is ~40% heavier (~250g), twice the price, & with buttons/dials I really don't use (..yet).
I really hate having to correct chromatic abberations though 😅.

I'm not a Sony shooter but I appreciate videos like this. Sigma is one of, if not, the best 3rd party lenses out there. Not to mention, it's cheaper than native glass. Thank you for keeping it real!

About Flare Resistance, the GM did show flare in the video (2:14) but it disappears after importing photo into lightroom while sigma’s flare still exists. Could you help to confirm this point?
Great review! But honestly this is the first comparison of these two lenses which made me a fan of the GM over the Sigma! Nevertheless the reviewer opinion is completely different... I think that flare control means slot and also the bokeh looks way much creamier...and I think that being razor sharp is not a big deal in portraits but I thing Sigma's biggest edge over Sony is it's color.
Oh am I the only one which wonders why almost all of your shots were overexposed intentionally?
Manny those reviews are insanely good... I bought my A7III because of you a while back and you might just have convinced me to buy the Sigma 85mm as my next lens.

Don't buy the Sigma if u want to use it also for video. Rather the 1.8 Sony. Such a good and pretty cheap lens.
@@Hunselmann I am buying the Sigma and plan to use it on my A7SIII, A7RIV and A9 for video and stills, no problem. Nothing bad about the excellent Sony f1.8, but I like f1.4 and the greater sharpness from this Sigma. Cheers
PixMotions thanks for making me aware. I barely shoot any video and if I do I'd probably use my zoom lenses. Portraits are what's most fun for me so I think the Sigma should fit in quite well
@@6gwilliams So if u can live with focus breathing or film with MF, get it. For me only linear motors which are quiet, accurate and smooth are worth to buy using a Sony with this incredible AF. I mean... What else is the point getting a camera like the A7SIII but not using its full potential?

I feel, there is something very special about that 85GM look that none of those other 85 lenses can match. The Sigma comes really close. But superb sharpness open wide is not everything.

Sony needs to start improving their lenses if they want to continue justifying their price tags cuz Sigma keeps beating them out for a lot less.

Hunter Nelson yeah the lenses are very expensive but they are so worth it! The glass is so damn good that the images come out spectacular! I own the 35mm and the 24-105F4 lens!! I love both of these lens but I’m dying to get the 85mm but man oh man it is so expensive!

Manny thanks love your stuff ,and it was a pleasure to meet you and your lovely other half in Las Vegas in February. I have already sold my Sony 85mm f1.4 GM and pre-ordered the Sigma 85mm f1.4 Art. The Sigma just outperforms the nearly five-year old lens design of the GM. If you get a chance can you redo the backlight test using the lens hoods. I personally shoot backlight using the lens hood. Cheers
Your videos are great. I made the decision to get the SIGMA 85mm f/1.4 ART i am very happy with my purchase. I was about to click order for the Sony GM and last min decided to check out some reviews online on the Sigma. I ordered it from BHP on Thu and got it in time for a shoot on Sat the same week. Image quality and sharpness fantastic !! I like everything about this lens!

I just bought this lens and I had to double check when you said it has a minimum focusing distance of 2.79 inches because that blew my mind. It's 2.79 feet which is so much easier to wrap my mind around. Dope lens!
