If you like the flare during video, it saves you time from adding it in post. Its a cinematic feature that many videographers like. Its all subjective, there is no good or bad when it comes to lens. It really comes down to how you use it and what you use it for. Every brand has its users.

I personally got the 85mm 1.8 because it's the smallest/lightest, I also have the sony 28mm and zeiss 55mm all smallest in lineup. Big heavy lenses like G Master, Sigma, Rokinon defeats the whole purpose of me switching from Canon to Sony mirrorless 6 years ago. When all these lenses perform within 90% of each other, really no point spending 2x-3x extra money and ending up with bigger heavier lenses.

The Sony 85 1.8 was the first lens I got when I moved to Sony. It's the best lens for the value - performance is great, its light, it has the AF hold button, it is marketed as weather-resistant (if that matters), its got nice compression and bokeh. It still have it. I want to upgrade to the Sigma, but having a difficult time justifying the $$$.

I came away thinking that the GM really is the nicest of them all, while the Sony 1.8 is just really solid and I value the compact size. • @artmaltman
      @artmaltman 2 года назад +4

@@michaelbell75 I agree with Hyun. Have shot all of these except the Sony f/1.8. The GM has the most beautiful rendering. If the slower AF and weak corners are not an issue it is the best IMHO. For still portraits the slower autofocus and soft corners are not an issue for me.
However I often photograph moving children so its a little agonizing but the faster AF of the Sigma matters to me. I am settling on the Sigma until GM v2.
I also own the Zeiss and the Samyang. The Samyang eye AF is less reliable IMHO and it has a slightly warm tint so I will sell it soon. If not for the other f/1.4 options I would keep it.
Certainly for the money it is wonderful.
The Zeiss was the first fast 85mm for this system and I was probably one of the first to buy it! I am tempted to use it when I don’t need f/1.4 because it is superb all round and does not have the severe distortion of the Sigma.
Notice in the video that when close focusing and background far away then all the lenses have amazing bokeh. It is where there are transitions or background not so far away that bokeh quality matter.

I would pick the Sony over the sigma if the prices were the same. I generally prefer the Sony glass look over the Sigma Dg Dn look. It’s mostly lens coatings I suspect, but here it’s also the aperture blades as well. I do t own either but I’m Al thousands of photos I’ve looked over for both I prefer the look of the Sony, it seems to offer smoother and more buttery/dreamy photos, while the Sigma exemplifies the Dg Dn lens line up look of being clinically sterile, flat and sharp.

All I can say is I own the 55mm 1.8 and it’s a great lens. Amazing quality. I would go with the sigma second, then Sony 1.8 then the other zeiss I cannot speak of. I believe it’s a planar and I own the 50mm 1.4 planar for Nikon (manual lens) and it’s a beautiful lens (given they use the same lens formula) it’s got a lot of limitations wide open (is tack sharp and little CA at a certain distances and at other distances it’s the worst looking lens that just looks not good, also swirly bokeh at times which is awesome looking) but stopped down it’s a crazy good lens with a lot of character, sharpness and resolution. The 55mm is another beautiful lens with great micro contrast and really good AF. It’s not insanely sharp at 1.8 but it’s still sharp. I don’t notice any CA in that lens. I also know the sigma is a great lens as pretty much all their lenses are crushing the photography market right now. From what I can tell is the Sony 50 is a really good budget option and is basically a cheaper 55mm but not quite as good but still a good lens. You can’t really go wrong with either of those (I’m not sure on the zeiss 1.4 AF though) if it’s the same planar formula then it’s a great lens optically except it’s limited at 1.4.

But I had an irrefutable offer during the black friday week for the 1.8 Sony which I acquired. I must say the last years while not having still that lens, gave me plenty of opportunities to make up my mind of the pros and cons of all the competitor lenses. Almost all modern lenses are sharp enough. One has to look at more subtle characteristics that a superficial test won’t reveal- the quality of the glass and how it reproduces colors, the aberrations, both spherical and lateral, the contrast and micro contrast, the build quality and long term performance against use and the elements.

Yup...the pincushion distortion is a huge dealbreaker for me. You're one of the few YT reviewers that chooses the GM over the Sigma. One this you skipped was the chromatic aberration. Its pretty bad in the GM. I shoot video mostly and that distortion is not going to work because Resolve has no legs profile for the Sigma.

I think you got a bad unit of the Rokinon. The images you posted here are really bad compared with what I get from that lens.

Superb review, important topic, well thought out. I love how concise and how you highlight the important issues rapidly. Thank you.
FYI, I own the Batis b/c it was the first and only 85mm for quite a while. I am keeping it for studio work where background blur at f/1.4 is rarely desired. I like the colors and pop. Beautiful images. Fast autofocus. Light weight. Little distortion.
I also bought the Samyang months ago for that creamy f/1.4 outdoors. Gorgeous. I do find though that it has a slight yellow tint (easy to correct) and like you I find the autofocus not always as reliable.
Now I have also the new Sigma which will replace the Samyang for my outdoors work. No yellow tint and more reliable autofocus. Also the sharpness is just a beautiful rendering. The GM is tempting though for that slightly creamier blur. GM gets discounted to $1600 periodically.
Why keep the Batis? Why not use the Sigma in studio as well? We shall see. The distortion correction might be an issue since in studio I tether to Capture One, then edit in Photoshop. How to correct the distortion?

Thanks, unfortunately I'm not all that familiar with Capture One but in Lightroom or Camera Raw, simple -10 or -11 correction seems to get rid of it.

If you are smart, you buy a lightly used lens vs new. When doing your reviews....you should also rank them by the current used average price....For example....on the used market the G master and the Sigma 85 are about the same price right now.

If you arent going to shell out and go all out for the GM, I would only go for the FE1.8 sony, its an absolute beast of a lens..

Great review! However I made my own tests and can definitively say (also confirmed by other reviewers) that a "normal copy" of the Sony 85mm 1.4 GM is less sharp in the middle of the frame, but in the corners sharper than the Sigma. If you came to a different conclusion something might have gone wrong with one of your tests.

Must have been a (seldom) bad copy of DN Sigma. Strange this film does mot even mention that possibility (Related infos of that kind: @ Roger from Lensrental. Serious comparisons : Elswhere).

i was eyeing for the sigma 85art but the distortion turns me off. ill just stick with my sony 85mm 1.8. hopefully they'll release a 24mm f2/1.8 thats not a gmaster.
