Ancient Egyptian viewers are proud of you, Chris.

noun [C]
Unit of measure for the mass of a lens based on an engineering aberration.
That's where I want to live too :)

This should become a regular.
Chris & jordan the best RUclips reviewer I have came across..
“For our ancient Egyptian viewers...”
You two are the best at what you do...I don’t shoot SONY nor mirrorless but yet here I am...
Love you guys, but this feels like an understatement:
"is not that much more expensive [than the Sony 85 1.8]" = Literally is double the price.
Would have loved at least a mention of the Samyang/Rokinon 85 1.4 that cost half the price too. Is the Sigma $600 better?
Yes
Was this episode shoot on the A7SIII?
It looks like it is.
Thank you Dpreview for bringing us to the beautiful lake and not hiding the view with toneh.
The conversions 🤣
Sounds like the two of you have caught the Kelowna Virus.
...
I'll see myself out.
The units of measurement are hilarious!
They make wine in Canada!? Who knew. Must all be Chardonn, eh?
Walter Tomashefsky can you slap a comment?
How dare you...make me laugh out loud.
They make all sorts of good wine in Canada. I like the Riesling from the Okanagan, where this was shot.
@@dillank3240 Quails gate. I picked up their dry Riesling
am I the only one seeing lots of distorsion? in the sharpness test part, the sigma text was not looking great... easy to correct?
Christian Comes pincushion distortion, the elephant in the room that wasn’t addressed.... can’t have it all I guess and this is why the sigma is smaller than the GM
The distortion, I have seen it and the lens is shit. You will piss your money away. This is my opinion.
5 years ago they promised us mirrorless cameras will result in smaller lenses. It took some time, but here it is! Look at the Samyang primes for Sony. Or the Tamron zooms. Or this one.
Did they promise "computational photography" as well? Because that's what is being sold here. Without image correction, this lens shows heavy pincushion distortion and heavy vignetting. No free lunch, even if the mirror is omitted.
@@coolcat23 Most DSLR lenses also have distortion to what's your point?
Pana 1.8 primes
@@coolcat23 who cares
Distortion wasn't addressed in this review, one of the biggest flaws apparently by other reviewers. Everything else is great, but distortion?? How bad is it, really??
Chris: great lens! Jordan: great lens! Bee: did that guy just cuss me out for *landing on a flower*?!! Seriously, great review as always; was interesting to see the video(Jordan) / photo (Chris) split on the recommendations for the L-Mount version, but it makes sense.
"...they just kept that large, huge design..."
"...very large, very heavy, and quite bulky..."
Someone is trying to bump the word count up on this review
14 stone, damn hah
I could write a love letter to this lens. Anyone still considering this lens, I've owned it for two years. I have many lenses, Sony and Sigma, and this one is just perfect. Buy it!
What was this filmed on? The picture is amazing!
I miss traveling... but I live in the USA. :(
:D
Yes, we are too infested with viruses to travel right now.
I own 85 1.4 GM, I'm considering to change to 85 1.4 DG DN. Any thoughts?
I'm all about sarcasm and nerdy details. Although I do have some corrections:
1:51 1 stone = 14 lbs... so 625g = 1/3.2 Noct = 1.38 lbs. = 0.0984 stone
3:21 1 cubit = 18 in... so 0.85 m = 1.86 cubits
It would be cool to see a comparison of this New Sigma 85 f1.4 DN with the new Canon RF 85 f1.2 L , I know both lenses are sharp, so I would like to see
just a comparison of the contrast and subject separation ( or 3D pop ) wide open. and the quality of the background blur wide open. and also a bokeh ball comparison wide open. the new Canon RF is a lens that I am sure is great, but personally I don't want an 85 lens that weighs 1190g when there is a Sigma 85 that weighs 625g, and I will also take $1.199 over $2.500 any day. so the Canon better have some kind of an edge other than it being f1.2 to justify it's size and weight and price. I know to allot of people the new Canon L f1.2 primes are making them drool and want to go to the Canon system, but for me they are making me want to stay away from the system because of there size and weight. and I'm sure for many people the price.
8:50 made me laugh more than I care to admit.
Does anyone but super picky, nerdy photographers care about 'cat's eye bokeh'....??? I mean really!
Enjoyed the "look" at that beautiful lake and countryside. The more you guys show of O Canada, the more I want to come visit, maybe stay. Meantime, those of you who do not have a thousand bucks for an 85mm f1.4, do what I did, cheap out, and buy a Rokinon 85 1.4 for $267 dollars US. ah Jordan, let me guess. you shot this one on the S1H. man the video is pretty.
Exactly, did the same. Got it for sub 200$, and it's ridiculous value for that price.
"oh you're gonna land - oh you ****" nice inside look at Chris' psyche
Not sure if it's really optically better than its predecessor which I happen to own. Distortion and vignetting are pretty strong in this new version, and even though easily correctable in post, it comes with IQ degradation. Using a Canon EOS R5, I have no option to use this lens anyway, but even if I did, I am not sure whether I'd make the switch. Yes, I'd love to have 85/1.4 as compact as the new DG DN, but strong vignetting and distortion make it a little less attractive. There's no such thing as a free lunch, I guess.
Canada is so far up north, I always have the impression they are comparable to Siberia. Very cold and not much sun. But seeing Chris in a TShirt and shorts, there is hope.
The land of moose and maple trees.
Seriously, a beautiful country.
It’s been 95f degrees since may here in Montreal. Download google earth, bruh.
Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN, Sony FE 85mm F1.4 GM, or Zeiss 85mm f/1.8 Batis for my Sony A7R4, which one would you buy?
Sigma 85mm 1.4, owned the others and Sigma is the best. Especially if you shoot portraits in a studio. Batis does not focus well in the studio.
hope sigma redo their art series with this smaller style
Nice Footage Jordan... was that the S1H? Which lenses were you using?
Love the measurement conversions!
So I’m thinking Batis 85mm or Sigma 85 Dg Dn, any recommendations or opinions ?
Sigma all day long! I owned all the 85mm lenses available for the Sony body and this really is the best for portraits. The G Master was so slow and loud to focus I returned it, they need to make an updated version for the G Master. The ZEISS Batis lens is great for outside work but has a focus issue if you do studio photography. I was shooting a client and had to remove the Batis and put the Sony 85mm 1.8 on, the Batis just would not nail the focus. If you only shoot portraits outside you won't notice the issue. This Sigma 85mm 1.4, Sigma 105mm 1.4, ZEISS 55mm 1.8 Sony 90mm macro are 4 of the best lenses I ever used for portraits.
That's a very entertaining review and a great Kelownascopy for potential tourists too. (sorry)
Ahhh, thank you. The Noct Scale is back. Need to know how many Nocts I can carry in my bag.
looks beautiful there. hope you guys get to live there. btw, congrats on 250k+ subs. j.
thx, been watching you guys for years now. best on YT, no doubt. j.
Hey Guys, I do like you and reviews that much, that I can’t even not wait until end until liking the video 😅
Second note, I don’t shoot 85 often, but when I do.. I want balls, big balls... might wait for an 85 GM II with the motor from the 135. Or I just go the 135...
Yes!! My hometown 😍
Love my sigma art lenses. But as a 1.8 85 owner I'm going to pass on this one. My wife insists lol.
The Samyang 85 f/1.4 looks very good too and it's much cheaper.
Thank you for using metric system. not cheese burger per bold eagle freedom
I'll be honest, I'm not digging the bokeh of this lens a lot, wide open, seems far too nervous and pretty bad with double-edged structures. Maybe a comparison with the gm 85 / samyang 85?
How much does Jordan weigh in Noct?
Juan Quispe 2.3

Around 60 Nocts, I’d say 🤣
Sour grapes. Lol
Kelowna, hmm, wonder if you saw the Daily Driven Exotics guys?
As an American I struggle with the metric system so I always appreciate the conversions. I really hope Sigma makes a new 50mm f/1.4 that is smaller than the old version.
Well they still havent made one
This aged well
Thanks so much, just bought this lens and this video did not make me regret it!
Both of you handsome guys are moving to the same place ... isn’t that officially make you brothers for life, where one goes so does the other :)
This 85mm is no longer a "BIGMA"! Nice and compact!
I've got me covered with a batis 85 1.8. IS + weather sealing.
Quails gate so nice there. Cheers from the NWT.
Does this len work with sony a6400?
Yes it will. It will be different on your camera though. Since you have a cropped sensor, it will most likely feel like a 105mm lens because the crop sensor produces a zoomed in effect on full frame lenses.
Sigma single handily pulled down the cost of using e mount verses ef rf and z mount, really looking forward to the 70200 that's yet to come
Definitely thinking of upgrading my Fe 85 1.8 Sony and getting this once the price is low enough / there's a good deal! Those 11 aperture blades!!! Beautiful. Sigma's DN lenses are such an asset for the E mount system right now and I hope this trend of smaller Art series primes will continue with maybe a new 50mm or 18mm!
Sigma led the way in building oversized lenses back then and set every player in the market (even Sony) to follow them, which has made us even doubt our idea that mirrorless systems should be compact. As a result, we have huge RF prime and fixed f2 lenses, bulky S1 series, and even a new weight unit , Noct 58. But guess what, they change their direction with several recent products, which is pretty surprising. Hope they would bring us more excitements like this in the future.
But in fact, Sigma revolutionized the world of objective lenses. so much so that, even after years, the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2 couldn't beat the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 which costs less than half the price and delivers the same quality.
Hands up all my ancient Egyptians 👽🙌
I need this lens on Nikon Z, it's a shame that they didn't release it. I think I will have to buy adapter but it's not the same thing as having it natively.
It's so good that it has more distortion than an ultrawide angle zoom lens. Distortion is the in thing apparently! $1200 for a prime with terrible distortion, looks I'll be selling my RF lens collection and going all Sigma now. (BTW that is sarcasm)
Are you guys still in Kelowna?
Welcome to Kelowna.
I always enjoys your content
Thanks for yet another very entertaining and detailed review.
The lens looks great, only I see this review just a month after I purchased the Sony 1.8 one...
I certainly don't regret but if something happens to that lens you convinced me to switch...
Hello Sir , which camera is best for photography in Sony full frame body
Perfect combination of size, price and image quality. If only we have a similar option for 35mm...
What is Toneh?
Cubits! I’m dying 🤣🤣
Sigma finally starting to make smaller lenses, watch out! Stunning lens, just absolutely stunning! I enjoyed all of the pictures and that says a lot. Also, THIS back-lit portrait @ 8:35, wow... Talk about stunning all the way through this review...
I have this lens and the tampon version and the train is the better lens. Selling the sigma
I bought this yesterday. The focus motor is so loud it is not suitable if you use it for video with an on camera mic. i am going to BH tomorrow to make sure it is not my copy. If it is like this on all copies I will return it.
Mine is not loud at all, very strange.
Very funny Chris. Nice comparison. How about a vid on adapted glass for L mount users. Best and budget alternatives
The best camera-lens review channel on youtube. you guys are keeping the quality high. You answer all the things I have in my head in your reviews. keep up the good work!
All right gents, I did subscribed and hope you can move to that beautiful place in this lifetime. :-)
BTW, I would have also made a comparision with the new Sigma 65mm F2 lens as the Sony FE 85GM is hopefully soon retired and we will see an optically way superior 85/1.4(1.2?) mark2 soon at a significantly higher price point.
So,,Can we say it's better than master bokeh 105mm F1.4??Regardless of weight& size and price?!!🤔cuz i just focus the better result... thanks
Nice review . Chris needs to tan those pasty white legs .
Someone mentioned the yellowish cast. Once I saw it, it was hard to unsee. The Bokeh is busier than I would expect in a 1.4 and not particularly in a pleasing way. No petzval here. Definitely not a summilux. I'd rather use the 1.4/85 planar contax with focus peaking than this. Or the ultimate, 1.4 80 lux. Life is too short for crappy bokeh. You live only once. No point in cheap primes or whiskey.
i chekced all samples posted on the net, youtube etc...all i can say, this is not a success after very old 85GM 1.4...Sharpness wide open, GM is better in center and corners, clearly, bokeh rendering of GM is also clearly better...why anyone would buy this lens over 85gm?
Focus breathing being an issue on every other fast 85mm lens, huh? Not the Nikkor Z 85mm, there is almost no focus breathing-granted, it is f/1.8 rather than f/1.4, but I would still call that fast.
I was surprised when looking up "Colona" at how it's actually spelled.
Yes its Kelowna, but fun fact, the oldest winery in the region, from 1932, is... Calona Vineyards.
Chris, stay in Calgary... yes Okanagan summers are great, the wine is wonderful, but the (warmer) winters are cloudy, grey, no sun for weeks, you would soon miss the prairie winter sun. You're welcome...!
Would love to see a comparison video between this and the ef version adapted using the sigma adapter.
Christopher Frost Photography has a comparison video of these two lenses
Whoaaaa! You totally skipped over the terrific Samyang 85mm 1.4 FE Mount. Much better AF than the Sony GM, and lovely image. Major omission. Can't give a thumbs up.
Well I dont know how but I have never come across you guys before, Well I Subed,Liked,Belled,Commented and Loved the review. Well done you got a new Fan. :)
And what is with the sharpness argument. This is so stupid. If anyone looks at the way the lens delivers microcontrasts in skin or the shadow render or the colors. That is so much more meaningful than "sharpness". A pleasing picture is beautiful - not necessarily because you can dissect nose hair at 800% on a calibrated 8K monitor.
I would love to see a comparison between this and the "newer" Lumix S series 85mm f1.8 lens.
I have this setup. It's not super lightweight, and paired with the smaller Sony body, it's pretty uncomfortable.
great vid......................................
NIce lens, especially the "aperture mute button" :) Now waiting for Fujinon XF 50mm f/1.0 review which also has the cat-eye effect wide open... and some CA
Why no mention of Samyang FE 85 F1.4? It is even lighter, cheaper and may be as sharp as the this Sigma lens.
Indeed a very nice lens if there wasn't the cat's eyes bokeh and the rather strong distortion, that you did not mention by the way. I'll stick with my 85mm 1.4 GM.
Kelowna? Hook up with the TMS Productions guys!
Woww. Deatailed explained. When it will be available in India ? I have the older Sigma 85mm 1.4 ver. i will exchange with new one..i found old ver is bit heavy
Yes, this lens really is a big departure from previous lens designs, but not in a good way. It needs image processing to compensate for its heavy pincushion distortion and heavy vignetting. The bokeh is also harsher than it should be. None of the images shown here provoke the kind of Nissen bokeh this lens can produce. Rather disappointing that these points have not been mentioned at all in this review. Many people may still be happy with the cat's-eye bokeh, the loss of sharpness midfield, the heavy distortion and vignetting, which are all consequences of the small form factor. Sigma did not make its other designs large and heavy because they didn't care about portability. They designed the lenses that way because that is what is required if one wants stellar IQ without requiring heavy image manipulation afterwards.

The pedestrian at 4:05 clearly got the 'keep on walking buddy!' look from Jordan. :)
I'm glad Chris acknowledged the ancient Egyptian viewers.
Dear Chris, over all these years I have been enjoying your wonderful camera and lens reviews. Shout outto the video guy who notoriously does a great job in the background as well. You have a serious fan overseas. Best from Zurich, Joe Sciacca
