With Titles like 11 Fake Fees, to Don't Say I'm Paying Cash at Car dealerships, and Car Shortage Crisis, and Car Dealer Says Bring the Car Back!... The Homework Guy Team publishes videos to help Car Buyers. Then we added Cash Buyer Negotiations, and Held Hostage at a Car Dealership, No Haggle One Price Car Dealerships, How Much do Used Car Dealers Pay for Cars?, 10 Things You Should Not Say to Car dealerships, and the Costco Auto Program. We hit all the topics, and we represent Car Buyers, a goal that’s often in direct conflict with Car Dealer goals.
A CAR DEALER WANTS TO:
1. SELL every car for the Highest Possible Price.
2. CONVINCE Car Buyers to use Dealer affiliated Lenders / Banks.
3. LOAD every Car Deal full of Fees and Finance Products.
4. OFFER Lowball numbers on every Trade Vehicle.
THE HOMEWORK GUY TEAM (THG) HELPS CAR BUYERS TO:
1. BUY a Car from Dealers or Private Party Sellers at the Lowest Price.
2. PAY Cash or Finance with their own Bank or Credit Union.
3. DECLINE Dealer Fees and Finance Products.
4. TRADE / SELL their current vehicle for the Best Value.
For more than 40 years, dealerships have EARNED their lowly reputation by being the masters of predatory selling. Dealers stalk victims relentlessly, often ruthlessly treating the most vulnerable car buyers (like seniors, for example) with little or no conscience. Car Dealers and their Finance Officers have no problem creating financial devastation for their customers with over bloated car loans, and quite often do. We point out the traps and the flaws of the process, and help car buyers get by all the nonsense without being ripped off. We promote fairness, honesty, and transparency, and we’d love to see a few dealers join our mission!
The Homework Guy Team provides car buying consumers with information, automotive news and updates, industry outlook, buying and selling advice, and other help to level the tables. I watched a number of car sales tutorial videos, especially ones by Steve Richards. Car buying in the USA, ( I'm in the UK ) is the most ghastly, convoluted, spirit-draining, long-winded, soul-sucking process I've ever seen.
Forget nitrogen in the tires. Have the dealer fill the tires with that special kind of hot air that only comes from the sales department
Correct
Probably more like the finance guy's butt..😂😂
I’m an auto claims adjuster for a major insurance company, and I’ve never heard of Kahu. More snake oil and hot air! Way to expose the BS, Homework team! Keep ‘em coming!
Kahu is just a product of Spireon AKA LoJack.
Kahu isn't "snake oil", it does work and does what it says it does. It is, however, an over-priced dealer add-on.
Can we please get more Steve Richards reaction videos?! I love seeing Kevin and Elizabeth react to the non-sense!
But what if my vehicle is lifted off the ground by a twister, climbs up to an altitude of say 25,000 feet, and then is miraculously placed on the road again. That's when those nitrogen filled tires pay for themselves.
I've got to go Julia,we've got Cows!
😂😂😂😂
Ja ja
I’m thinking about going to car dealerships just to mess with some of these snakes. How anyone doesn’t see through this garbage is just stunning. What a slime!
Hello, I'm buying a car later this year and the hubs and I were thinking about doing a test run just to test our knowledge from these videos, lol
Us car salesman know when people aren’t buying, so we won’t fall for easy tricks.
To me, it would take about ten seconds to shut this guy down. "Yes, I see value in all of the stuff you're talking about so you can stop the speech. But I'm not prepared to pay your outlandish markups when I can get the same thing aftermarket for a fraction of the price. Either take them off the car, or throw them in." If he balks at that, the next sound he hears is the scraping of the chair across the floor as I push back from the table and walk out. I can't decide if he's delusional or knowingly deceptive when he says the car sales industry isn't the way it used to be, when he's out there deliberately trying to make sure it stays that way. What a complete huckster.
Lol most if not all salespeople will have no problem watching you go door to door to every dealership getting hit by addendums
Please
Knowingly deceptive
I literally just got back from the dealership. It’s a jungle out there. There are barely any cars on the lot. I experienced this today. The asked for the OTD price before i even stepped on the lot and of course they gave me the run around and I see why now. First the car wasn’t even delivered to the lot and they wanted a deposit to “hold” the car. I did understand that because there’s barely any inventory. Then he finally wrote up the Deal😂😳. Approx $3k in Addon but he didn’t call them that lol he said it was accessories that had to be put on the car. I was shocked. I told the salesman well if the car isn’t even delivered yet don’t add the accessories as I don’t wAnt or need Poly Steel, Red alert, nitrogen, and a bunch of other bull they added. Like wtf is red alert 😩. It was just all bad. I laughed at him and left. He didn’t care because someone who don’t know any better will pay $25k for a Kia Forte just not me😂😂😂
I wanna thank you. Last week I walked out on a dealer because he wouldn’tremove the “nitrogen tires” from my deal. By the look on his and finance officer face he couldn’t believe it. Called me four times so I blocked the number.
LOL did he offer to take it off
I reckon Steve should run for president because he is so proficient at lying without a sense of guilt.
Sorry... But we already have a president who is very proficient at lying without a sense of guilt...

Probably gave lessons to 45.
It’s worth pointing out that you will likely not get anywhere near 72 months out of the tires, so the monthly cost is higher. I realize that nitrogen is nonsense, but still wanted to point this out.
Richards is an outright liar on so many points; he should be a politician. Most wheels locks are easily defeated even without the "key"; special readily-available sockets will remove them easily, because mechanics deal with the "lost key" all the time.
Love to hear people who just bought a new car say how much they got a huge discount! I agree, they probably did until they hit the F&I office! Then it was next stop rape town.
I sold cars for a couple years. Not aggressive so I never really considered it as a long term job. There’s a lot of pressure to get everyone you contact sold and it’s not just about money, it’s about just keeping your job. I have a little sympathy for some salesmen because if they don’t sell you, their boss thinks the salesman is costing them opportunities, costing them money. I saw decent moral people turn into snakes salesmen. Strangely enough my non pressure sales personality gave me a bit of a client base that was annoyed by boisterous aggressive and I did well with it but I just tired of the environment. The tipping point was trickery like addendums and garbage service plans being sold in Fand I office.
The moral of the story is do not buy any up sells or fees, do not finance through the dealer, do not say I am paying cash and just $100 over invoice
You've been hanging around on the channel, haven't you Bob? You've got it figured out!
$100 over invoice people would laugh you out the front door.
not true
both bob and kevin
kevin claimed (and chuck to some extent)
WARRANTIES may be worth it depending on the deal and cost ofc if it breaks down like a bmw or other german euro car
it really saves you a ton
i heard of a legendary warranty deal my friend got
said everything was covered free no hassle after he got a warranty
but yea depends on the car
maybe not be so worth it on a honda
how about a story about Car Shield (scam IMHO)and all the others extended warranty businesses other there.
I am curious also about Car Shield
I always get an extended warranty but always through the OEM. This way my car gets fixed at a dealer with genuine parts and I get a courtesy loaner car. Even using it a couple of times pays for itself. I always buy it separately from the vehicle though because I get an interest free payout on it. Also, my cars are warranted until they are 10 to 12 years old, as I always buy the extension just as the original warranty is expiring.
A few weeks ago I was at a VW dealer in Florida with my friend who was wanting to purchase a GTI. The dealer had a $899 dealer fee PLUS $699 DOC FEE, they refused to budge OR discount the car accordingly. We walked out. I guess all the dealers in Florida charge these high fees..
899 dealerfee isn't that bad, my kia dealership had a 799 one. Depending on how new the car is don't pay it. For brand new cars that are there for like 4 days don't pay it. They start paying a lot fee after 30 days
@@Jackdiddly1 In California, dealer fees are illegal. Just an 80 doc fee (max allowed by law).
@@aa777flyer wow nifty. But in Cali everything else is expensive. Cost of living and all. But it's cool you have a law like that. Florida doesn't have that
smart move
Google the max allowed “Doc” fee for each state. In NY state is about $85. In other states they are allowed to charge more. It’s up to you to demand dealership to take off the ridiculous $899 “fee” off the price of the car. If they don’t, walk out. It’s been done before. Don’t be “soft”.
I bought a new truck a couple months ago and immediately told them that I wouldn't pay for any of that stuff. It was instantly gone. Even in this seller's market it vanished. I figured that the salesman stood the most to lose if he didn't make the sale. I could just walk away and buy elsewhere; the dealership could have sold the truck to the next guy, but the salesman would have likely lost the sale (unless he was the lucky one that sold it to the next guy). So I left it up the him, and he took it off the price instantly.
Here in California adding that fluff also increases your titling fees annually. I never buy any of that junk. I do it myself after the fact and save a ton of money.
I'm in California. Hopefully, dealership warrantee and gap doesn't increase my renewal fees Annually? (Yes, I went for it, I caved under pressure, but only to those)
We gotta get you guys to a million subscribers, this content has to get out there to everyone. Dealers are bending over society. Keep up the good work. 🎸🎶🔥

Just a heads up!!!!!! I was a mechanic at a dealership and many people lose their key lug to get an anti theft wheel lug off. Their is a socket that will get any.......any........lock lug off. It's conical shaped on the inside and you pound it on the lug with a hammer and use an impact gun to get it off. Doing brake work I could get all 4 lock lugs off in less than a minute. If you really want to protect your mags you use lock lugs on ALL the lugs..........Channel locks work also. Both ways destroy the lug............
I need a shower after watching Steve. There's a difference between buying a car and having a salesman try to take money out of my pocket.
Thank you guys!!🙏🙏
Wow!! With all that fluff , he should work in a pillow factory .
Another Superb video! I found out that while the Kahu does NOT have a monthly subscription fee, the "Car lock" does charge $10/month. Still would not buy this or any other add-on from the dealer!
I scored a nice deal on a car recently, but, I worked hard to get it. Thanks to you folks, I talked them into dropping their $500 "Admin" fee. They still have a long way to go to be trusted!
I fill my tires with helium. It makes the car lighter so I get better gas mileage.🤣
Gives you that "floating feeling" at highway speed too, I bet? Lol...
🤣😆😅
Ooooh! Just like chitty-chitty-bang-bang!
Can’t stand car dealership
Thank you for this knowledge @thehomeworkguy
Always good info!
Whenever I've seen an addendum for anything, added 'markup' especially, that dealer has "0" chance of getting me in their sales area, period! If I stay on their lot at all, it's just to do 'homework', look at colors, etc., then it's off to another dealer.
Great video and keep up the good work. Just remember, you don't have to buy a vehicle from them, but they need you to buy a vehicle from them. The more I learn about the stealership asshatery (mostly thanks to you), the more I'll just try to keep what I got running as long as I can. Its not new or sexy, but its paid for. It gets me every where I need to go every time. Its also, cheaper to fix and easier to fix than newer vehicles.
Absolute love these two. Just love the stuff they share. That’s what I’m taking about. Sharing knowledge.
THANK YOU ! THANK YOU ! THANK YOU !
I bought a used 1987 car at a dealer in Nov of 1994. At the time one of the big dealer add-ons was the all glass etching. The car I bought missed the etching for some reason. I looked over the contract & they charged me for it; $250.00. I went back to question it & they told me "Oh let get it done" I said no just give me a refund. "But, but, but..." I said NO I DON'T WANT IT! They sent me a check for $250.00. After getting the check, I did more math. I found there was a portion of sales tax on this product. They still owed me 21 or so dollars so, I went back a second time to request the sales tax money I was owed. The F&I guy was pissed & made a comment "This deal has been just awful"....I'm thinking why is it my fault that it's awful since you guys weren't honest with me in the first place. Also, I think those kits were about $40.00 at the time & you could buy them at Pep Boys.
August 2022. I went to my local Toyota Dealer to look at a New Tacoma pickup truck. MSRP $31k after Addendum, $40k. There was a $6,000 Market Adjustment Fee along with the $99 Nitrogen and other stuff like tint, clear coat, and other things you can't see.
Thanks for all this information. Nice to know all this stuff. There are other addon things the dealer likes to tack onto the car price tag which we also don't need.
Nice to know all this stuff before we go into the dealership. Take care.
My favorite part was the mention of the nitrogen for the tires 😂😂...gotta love the dealers
Wow I just looked at a new car yesterday and it had the nitrogen tire cost as well as they doubled the cost of the manufacturers cost this was so informative as being a widowed woman I think I can get my new car by myself! Thank you soooo much!💕💕💕💕
I was just in a Toyota dealer for service on my truck. I looked at a new truck and they had an addendum on the window that read market adjustment $7995.00.
I'm 48 years old and never once got my tires or wheels stolen off my car. I don't know a single person who has either. Heck I don't even know anybody who's got their car stolen before.
Greg, I did get my car stolen 25+ years ago. Was totally my fault due to my negligence but obviously it does happen. One other thing I can confirm, stolen cars are definitely not a priority for the police. I literally went out the next day and found my car myself.
Greg, if you live in one of the southern state bordering Mexico, it'll change your perspective.

Just buy an apple air tag for 30 bucks and stick it in your glove compartment, boom, saved yourself 800 bucks. Just replace the battery once a year for like three bucks and you have a cheap car tracker for life.
Maybe I'll stick my 2nd pet tracker in the glove box! Lol. Sounds like a great idea!
Make a video on negotiating on vehicles that are in very high demand.
Call the manufacturer's customer service line from the salesman phone. it makes stuff happen even faster.
Where I live almost all the US dealers have added “market adjustments” of a couple grand because new car inventory is so empty. Ford, gm and dodge lots have a lot of empty spots on the lots
Roger that. I'm seeing ADMs of $2,500 on F150s at bigger dealers. I actually saw a unicorn yesterday -- a brand new F150 at the grocery store.
Funny thing is you couldn't pay me to drive one...
@@chiarac4967 Okay, noted.
Toyota here has added a $4995 "market adjustment". I said "good luck" and left. They sold the truck the next day. They are adding them because morons are paying them.
@@wmason1961 That's the whole secret to the high prices we've seen the last few years --- People keep paying them, so the manufacturers have no incentive to stop increasing them. You're right on.

Aftermarket adds make NO difference in trade in value. It MAY make a small difference to someone buying your car on the street.

Great video. 👍👍
Think you so much for your help on your videos I’ve learned so much
You are so welcome!
I like how he said you will save 60 times. No you will not as you will have a lower premium twice a year that breaks into payments. So two per year. Also Ford pass seems to always show where my vehicle is and it’s free. You two are great at what you do.

No way would I put Kahu on my car. It tracks you sells your data to the dealership so they know your driving habits and and routes
So does OnStar
Why Does the dealership want that info and how does it affect you? Also will kahu and onstar sell info about you to anyone who wants to track you?
@@lilyroza The dealership doesn't sell your info they use it to track your mileage and car maintenance so they can get you back for service
In 1965, we were shopping for a new Country Squire. After much arguing and shouting, Dad had enough and we all got in our car to leave. As we were driving out of the gravelled lot, we saw the salesman running after us. Dad rolled down his window and the salesman asked if $20 would change his mind. Dad yells, "You son of a b---h," floors the gas and leaves the salesman coughing and covered in oily gravel. Those were the days.

I’m a finance manager at a family run small town dealership. I’ve never seen addendum‘s at a dealership like this before but I’m sure they exist. Usually when my dealer does addendum it’s very rare we usually do something like running boards. If you see an addendum like this on a vehicle simply walk out and go to another one.
The only time we use addendum tags is for an incomplete vehicle (cab & chassis, or cutaway van) that has been up fitted with an ambulance body, dump bed, service body, box truck, etc. By law we have to disclose the upfit & cost. Upfit must meet DOT requirements for final stage certification.
The reason NASCAR uses nitrogen in the tires is for safety. I f the car crashs and starts a fire the tires have no oxygen to fan the flames.
And how does S.R. think that comparing nitrogen in tires on one car relates to the nitrogen put in tires of passenger jets? Kind of an 🍎 to 🍊 comparison.
Excellent video! Should be shown in classrooms to high school seniors.
Great information !!
Thanks, Mike. We appreciate you stopping by The Homework Guy channel today!
If they won't remove them, have them discount the amount listed from the final price. Or, call the manufacturer as mentioned.
Wow, I remember this conversation when I got my SUV. I was soo ready to just be done. They wear you down.
Good advice
About 24 years ago when I was young and dumb, I bought a small truck without negotiating the price. Then I went to the “finance office” and sign anything they put in front of me without me asking any questions because I thought “that’s the way it is at all dealerships”. Boy, was I a dumbass!!!! I would love to find that final bill of sale from all those years ago and take a look to see how much vaseline I should have brought with me.
So if i call the Manufacture who do i speak with ? what department handles complaints about the dealers ?
Congrats on your recovery. I know what you went through.
Yes, thank you
Don't buy the line that these antitheft products will save you on insurance. I talked to my agent and they no longer give discounts because pretty much everything has antitheft on it now. So do your homework and talk to your agent first then you have information ammo to shoot down the sales pitch.
More important that just not getting an insurance discount, a lot of late models vehicles already have a vehicle locator programmed and equipped inside the vehicle in the first place! Your salesperson might not know, but even if they did they probably wouldn't tell you. Make sure you do your research first.
Thank You Kevin for bringing this to light... Steve ,and others have been making horrible videos like this for years..No one calls them out...If you want to be respected on YT, you need to put out quality ,honest content.
Great video 👍
Mandatory viewing for all car buyers! 👍👍 they originally added extras to sell cars now they’re making you pay for them!
Well done video. I would like to have clarified on these addendums. It is the manufacture does not allow addendums or they only discourage it? I don't understand why calling the manufacture will MAKE the dealer remove them
Addendums are optional add ons put on before the sale usually at a car lot. Manufacturers DON'T like dealers playing games with this because it can interfere with potential sales. Never pay for these if you want accessories buy them during or after sales process from the parts or accessories dept if you want oem parts or go buy your own from a reputable company.
Steve is the best. ! Love the guy
Dont forget to add the blinker fluid!!!
If the car is a GM car, it probably has Onstar, which will work just like the anti theft deal.
Now you’re being forced to pay for Onstar
I was really hoping to see your reaction to this one. Thank you!
In spite of what he says, just Steve's body language and his tone of voice would make me get up and walk away.
Love it
I love how his fake customer just rolls over, like I know some customers may do that, but like even the not-so-savvy will have a little more resistance than that guy did.
Who are these people with a thumbs down ? Really, are you against being educated? What a life you must live. Probly a car salesman.
You got it, Paul. Car Salesmen troll the channel regularly. One of those thumbs down is likely from Steve Richards himself. He's a subscriber here on The Homework Guy channel. We welcome their disappointment with our content, and wear those thumbs down like a badge of honor!
I love this video so much
I had a dealer try to sell me in the nitrogen in my tires. I reminded him that 70 percent of the air we breathe is nitrogen. And of course refused to get it.
The kahu that was on my new car was 399 through the dealership, they took that off the price of the car. That kahu is plugged in the odb2 port and has a separate fuse that takes less than 30 secs to remove. Once that car was out of the dealership name I removed that pos from my car.
I told a dealer it was $500 off for each dealer advertisement on the vehicle when they delivered it. There were 5. Told them to take the vehicle back or knock off $2500. Took awhile but i won.
Awesome video guys. Love breaking down Steve's BS.
So in looking for used vehicles at local dealerships, there were 2 that listed no haggle pricing for 2 vehicles I was looking at. The one showed me all the work that they did on the car getting it ready to sell I actually use them for service and it looked like a regular service invoice. When analyzing the offering price based on THG model, it didn't seem terribly exhorbant (sp?) in regards to profit after the service upgrades. The other dealership's vehicle did seem a bit high priced, but there were all of these other features added on like heavy duty hitching, a suspension package, roof racks and other stuff. That is why I was thinking that the offering price was so high, but they list it as their no haggle price (It was a Mercedes dealership selling a used Chevy).
As a former car salesman I got paid an additional $250.00 for the add-ons. We charged almost $3000.00 and our cost was 250.00
I remember when I got new tires at Costco they gave me nitrogen in my tires and they told me that there is not moisture in nitrogen and the molecules are smaller. But to be honest I have used normal air and nitrogen and I haven seen a different at all
Thank you so much for your videos.
Tomorrow, I am purchasing a new vehicle and am well prepared to turn down the add-ons - armed with the Customer Service Number, the FTC infomation, and a list of what not to purchase from my previous contract with the same dealership.
Best of luck to you!
So as he talks about each item, I have my amazon cart filled with those products and find a reputable detailer because we all know dealers suck at installing tint, I tell him, "Gee thanks! I just ordered everything I need and scheduled an appointment for tint, so you can just take that off the price! Also, I got the detailer to toss in PPF for the car as well. You sure know how to help the local businesses around here!"
"The power window protection package not only boosts the re-sale value of your car. but when you break it down, it's only costing you 2 cents an hour! Who can't afford 2 cents, right? If you saw two pennies on the sidewalk, you probably wouldn't even bother bending over to pick it up, am I right? Now just okay this and we'll get your new Pacifica ready to go."
All you need to know about Kahu - "Kahu is not currently available to be sold directly to consumers." In plain English we are another sales gimmick for dealerships to suck you for more money.
Link to your website comes back with a 404. Fun content, appreciate the breakdown and what the value of the individual pieces are. Do you have 'approximate' value/sorry - priceof all the various addendums collected somewhere? Value is what those items are worth to me (ie Tinting = -100 for attracting police, GPS tracking/Big Brother= -1500, Lock lug nuts=$50)
But that's only 4 cents an hour!
When I purchased my used vehicle, the f&i person had a satellite driven service for when the vehicle is stolen.

I can just see Steve standing next to a 300# block of ice pitching it to an Eskimo. This ice comes with a titanium plated set of ice tongs which have a phone app tracker, so if they are stolen you will know exactly where they are.
