GET AWESOME (THG) HOMEWORKGUY MERCHANDISE. SHOW DEALERS YOU ARE IN CONTROL OF YOUR NEXT CAR DEAL!
    the-homework-guys-store.creat...
The Homework Guy Team publishes videos to help Car Buyers. We don’t hate Car Dealerships. Instead, we represent Car Buyers, a goal that’s often in direct conflict with Car Dealer goals.
    A CAR DEALER WANTS TO:
    1. SELL every car for the Highest Possible Price.
    2. CONVINCE Car Buyers to use Dealer affiliated Lenders / Banks.
    3. LOAD every Car Deal full of Fees and Finance Products.
    4. OFFER Lowball numbers on every Trade Vehicle.
THE HOMEWORK GUY TEAM (THG) HELPS CAR BUYERS TO:
    1. BUY a Car from Dealers or Private Party Sellers at the Lowest Price.
    2. PAY Cash or Finance with their own Bank or Credit Union.
    3. DECLINE Dealer Fees and Finance Products.
    4. TRADE / SELL their current vehicle for the Best Value.
THG didn’t give Car Dealers their Bad Reputation. For more than 40 years, dealerships have EARNED it by being the masters of predatory selling. They stalk victims relentlessly, often ruthlessly treating the most vulnerable car buyers (like seniors, for example) with little or no conscience. Car Dealers and their Finance Officers have no problem creating financial devastation for their customers with over bloated car loans, and often do. While the business has had record setting profits, Dealers never stop telling Car Buyers “We’re losing money!” That’s the bed Car Dealers custom built for themselves. We point out the traps and the flaws of the process, and help car buyers get by all the nonsense without being ripped off. We promote fairness, honesty, and transparency, and we’d love to see a few dealers join our mission!
The Homework Guy Team provides car buying consumers with information, automotive news and updates, industry outlook, buying and selling advice, and other help to level the tables. The public face of THG is Kevin Hunter and the master negotiator, Elizabeth. Tons of time and research goes into every show, planning for weeks, several projects always on the table, all with the goal of getting it exactly right. From Automotive News Updates to vehicle shopping advice and assistance, The Homework Guy Team is the best there is.

Recently took the wife’s 2019 Honda Civic Touring in for routine service at the dealership where the car was purchased. I walked over to see a 2021 Civic Type R they had in the showroom and within seconds I had a salesman going through the very same word tracks in this video. Thanks to watching Kevin’s video series, the salesman gave up within the 10 minutes of me saying NO to every word track he came up with. It amazes me how spot on this information is!

One time when the car warranty people called, I pushed the nimber for the operator because I was curious. They told me they needed all sorts of info to see which car it was. Thing is, the warranty expired in 2012, and this was in 2020. I told them "you called me, so you should have that info. I shouldn't have to give you anything." Their rebuttal was not scripted, and scatter-brained. I love trying to get people off their scripts.

These videos are invaluable. Both the training videos and your subsequent commentary. I recently had to endure a sales manager’s attempt to sell me paint protection and wheel protection. He was met with a “no”. “Do you mind telling me why you don’t want these packages?” was met with “I do, no further discussion of this subject is needed, my decision is final.” This was our second visit to the dealership and we had made it clear when we called prior to that visit that we intended to purchase the car. Not after talking with this guy. We drove to this dealership (70 miles one way - twice and he knew it) - that should have told him something. He had the car sold before he ever met us and still managed to talk us out of it. We thanked him and walked out. Parenthetically, the customer over at the next table - an elderly gentleman - was sitting facing one salesperson and while surrounded by three others standing over him “helping” him decide to buy. If they tried that with me I think I would have enjoyed that. Knowing what’s coming next and more importantly the dynamic behind it makes it much easier to say “no” and stick to it. Thank you.

There is an advantage of diversifying bank accounts, cross-collateral. Some banks (especially credit unions) use cross-collateral to protect themselves. What this means is if you get into financial trouble and all your accounts are at the same credit union, they treat them all as one. In other words, if you get behind on your credit card they may repossess your vehicle.

That's great advice about banks from the THG team. I'm the third generation of my family to bank with the same banking institution and they really appreciate that, especially when I go to them for loans.
Back when I left the military and bought my first house I was just a young man who didn't have much credit or experience with life outside of the military or college. I went to a couple of different banks (who advertised themselves as home loan specialists) to attempt to get a home loan and they turned me down as too much of a risk due to being single and very little credit history, despite the fact that I had a well paying job and no bad credit (just very little credit history). On my third attempt at getting a home loan I went to my personal bank and the bank manager, who was a friend of my parents, assisted me with getting a home loan. He was very helpful and explained the process to me, why I should get a 30 year loan to start off with and then refinance it for 15 years in one or two years when I had built up my credit and even offered to assist me with the refinance when the time came.
I took that advice, received the loan, refinanced it to a 15 year loan two years later and had a new house payment that was only about $25 or so higher than my previous 30 year loan payment. The following year that same bank also assisted me on a loan for a new car and gave me advice on purchasing the car. That was back in the early days of the internet when the biggest thing on RUclips was cat video's. Fast forward to the present and my house has been paid off for several years, the bank manager has since passed away, but the lessons that he taught me (as well as many other customers who banked with him) are still remembered and practiced.
I'm just glad that channels like this are around now to pass on that same great advice!!

My car's equity is not my only savings account. I plan my spending so that I can put cash money aside in a savings account.
That reasoning only works with people whose only source of potential spare cash is the resale value of their vehicle.
I will not trade my car in prematurely just to "unlock the value" of my trade in order to complete a new vehicle purchase.
I prefer to drive my vehicles for several years until the resale value is a two digit number.

Still keeping it, though because it meets a current need that I just don't want to spend a bunch of money for. When it dies to the point that repairs are more than its value I'll give it a decent burial.

Have your homework done in advance so you know fair market values, but yes, negotiating on the lot isn't a bad idea at all. They have no leverage over you because as you just said, you can leave anytime you want. They know it. They will keep wanting to go inside, but just ignore that. In fact, if they say it a little too often, just say, "Go get your info. I'll wait right here for you." It's your decision if you want to wait or not, but I do this all the time.

@@KevinHunter Isn't it true that they can still sell those as "new" cars since they've never been licensed?

    • @KevinHunter
      @KevinHunter  3 года назад +1

Yes, the car still sits in the "new" category and it's due to the fact that the vehicle title was never transferred. It takes a title transfer to change ownership, and when ownership moves from the dealer to the consumer, it now becomes "used." This is a good thing to know for the future on used cars as well, because I've seen plenty of car deals that fell apart after the deal was done. A persistent customer got the dealer to take the car back. What was the biggest reason they agreed to do it in the end? The state had not yet transferred the title (new or used), and the vehicle was still titled in the dealers name. They contacted the state, and cancelled the transfer request, putting everything back the way it was.

It's what the manufacturers do to drive sales when customers aren't coming in. Instead of dropping prices, because they always want prices to be high, they use a financing incentive to get you in the door. Every time you see a very low interest rate advertised, you should always know it's a bad time to buy a car in terms of car prices. Sluggish sales create promotions, and promotions are done in a way to benefit the car dealer and the manufacturer the most, while giving up the least to the consumer. Hopefully that makes sense. I've never gone in to a dealer on a rate incentive, ever.
