With Titles like 11 Fake Fees, to Don't Say I'm Paying Cash at Car dealerships, and Car Shortage Crisis, and Car Dealer Says Bring the Car Back!... The Homework Guy Team publishes videos to help Car Buyers. Then we added Cash Buyer Negotiations, and Held Hostage at a Car Dealership, No Haggle One Price Car Dealerships, How Much do Used Car Dealers Pay for Cars?, 10 Things You Should Not Say to Car dealerships, and the Costco Auto Program. We hit all the topics, and we represent Car Buyers, a goal that’s often in direct conflict with Car Dealer goals.
A CAR DEALER WANTS TO:
1. SELL every car for the Highest Possible Price.
2. CONVINCE Car Buyers to use Dealer affiliated Lenders / Banks.
3. LOAD every Car Deal full of Fees and Finance Products.
4. OFFER Lowball numbers on every Trade Vehicle.
THE HOMEWORK GUY TEAM (THG) HELPS CAR BUYERS TO:
1. BUY a Car from Dealers or Private Party Sellers at the Lowest Price.
2. PAY Cash or Finance with their own Bank or Credit Union.
3. DECLINE Dealer Fees and Finance Products.
4. TRADE / SELL their current vehicle for the Best Value.
For more than 40 years, dealerships have EARNED their lowly reputation by being the masters of predatory selling. Dealers stalk victims relentlessly, often ruthlessly treating the most vulnerable car buyers (like seniors, for example) with little or no conscience. Car Dealers and their Finance Officers have no problem creating financial devastation for their customers with over bloated car loans, and quite often do. We point out the traps and the flaws of the process, and help car buyers get by all the nonsense without being ripped off. We promote fairness, honesty, and transparency, and we’d love to see a few dealers join our mission!
The Homework Guy Team provides car buying consumers with information, automotive news and updates, industry outlook, buying and selling advice, and other help to level the tables. Steve Richards is the reason car salesman have a bad reputation, and the reason buyers want to eliminate retail dealerships.
The guy Steve Richards is the epitome of repulsiveness. He's a classic manipulator.
Thirty years ago my brother in law was selling his pick up truck. A guy came to his house and they went out for a test drive. They got a couple miles from his house, the guy pulls out a gun and tells him to get out. The guy was never caught and the truck was never seen again.
Anyone wearing sunglasses on top of his head is a walk away on the spot. This is why people would rather go to the dentist than buy a new car.
I eat those guys for lunch. Dear God, PLEASE be a nitwit with all show and no go.
It could be worse. He could be one of those douches that wear the glasses backwards on their head lol.

@Eli Shiloh instablaster ;)
Steve is also full of something. He is exactly why most people do not trust car dealers. Watching videos on Steve is the best investment a car buyer can make.
If that dude started with me on that track, within 2 minutes I’d straight tell him, “You need to stop. I don’t work like this.”
That's exactly what we have anyone on our THG team do. Interrupt immediately, control the sales process. If you don't, you get this kind of nonsense to listen to. Car Buying like this isn't very fun. Don't do this to yourself!
@@KevinHunter please do a reaction vid of his payment justification track where he has the customer subtracting their future sale value of a car they don't even own yet from the monthly payment. "It's like you're writing yourself a $50 check every month". Beyond ridiculous.
Do you remember which video he said that on? If you know what it was, please respond with a link. We'll definitely check it out.
Seriously! Who even talks like Richards in “real life.”

I cannot believe that nothing, NOTHING has changed in this b.s. business... I did this for six months about 27 yrs. ago but could not deal with the predatory sales people and how they try to convince you that customers are uninformed naive children that need you to hold their hand when buying a car. I had too much integrity to take advantage of people like that so..... one day I just walked out and never looked back. The plus side for me in this was.... when I do go looking for a car, I simply tell them that I was in the business and they back off because they know that "I know the game". So something good came out of this for me. love this video. I worked with a bunch of Steve Richards types....... too many.
Me too. I actually counseled low income customers to not buy an expensive car, and find a $2000 car that runs.
I would never buy a car from a salesman like this. This video is so informative 👏
He never stops talking. He is in control, he is defining what is good, what is good for you. It's like watching a 3 card monte game.
A high pressure sales effort like that merely raises my hackles and causes me to growl and bare my fangs.
I can relate. It's insulting to anyone's intelligence that a salesman thinks he can cram a vehicle down your throat with such nonsense. He would have received the hand in the face with a very firm "Stop it, or I walk."
And bite.

Watching this guy work is absolutely surreal. I've bought a few cars in my time, and I have never, and I mean NEVER encountered sleazy sales pitch BS like that. I had one guy who sort of sounded like he was ABOUT to take a turn in that direction, and just that was enough to make me get up and leave. How does this guy make any sales whatsoever? The mind reels...
Just on how he is talking alone I would leave. Very condescending. That sleaze bag approach may of worked 20 years ago but today he would be told to pound salt.
I think you have too much faith in humanity.
I thought I was pound sand.
Oh my God, listening to Steve Richards' sales pitch is like Chinese water torture. I've purchased 8 new cars in my life and I've never sat through something like that...and never would.
Chinese water torture is less cruel.
I could take 200 calls to buy my car in the time it takes for Steve to get through all the BS he’s shoveling.
I called for a 4-wheel loader to shovel all the ahem! Steve is spewing.
Dear Kevin, I love your videos on how to avoid getting ripped off at the car’s dealership
I was hired by Group1 to work for Ira Lexus in Denver’s Massachusetts and after almost three months i left because it was worth then the videos you posting and teaching people on how to deal with these dealers
Continue with the good work
Ray
That is a great opening. Smart and honest. The car dealership pays msrp and it’s the add ons is where they make their profit. They don’t go lower and they don’t make slot in the car itself. It’s easy to pick apart this guy after seeing the video and having hours to break it down and tear it apart. Which is pretty easy to do but in the moment I don’t see what he is wrong with trying to earn a living. My dealership sold me an experience insurance policy and my BMW. About two months later I tore up two wheels, 19 inch highly expensive and I laid. Nothing to get them replaced at no cost even for the larbor. I could be more thankful for him to sell my the policy and so get around 79 percent back at the end of my lease.
Been waiting for you to do a reaction video to this for a while. Exposes the inner working of dealerships, it's all about selling you.
He would be good working at the call centers calling people about their car warranty, telling them their social security number has been suspended and the irs is sending police to arrest you unless you paythem in amazon gift cards.
I would have stopped him and said, "You are going to have to go out to the floor and find me another sales person. As far as we are concerned you and I are done!"
I would go out to the floor on my way to car and leave!
Great video with some excellent information and a fantastic breakdown of what is happening during the conversation
My last car purchase about 4 months ago came down to the trade value. What I did was to get a trade value for my car from Carvana. Sight unseen they were coming to pick the car up etc. That amount was more than Kelly and some others. I had that offer on my phone. When the Dealer came back hemming and hawing about the trade value being to low, I whipped out my phone and showed him the quote from Carvana. About 2 minutes later, they agreed to match Carvana's offer. This was about 2k more than they were originally offering. Mind you, my car was in good shape with no damage. Anyway, I used the offer from Carvana and the threat to walk and take their offer before buying from them. Deal done. Very simple. Deal took all of 30 minutes. Although they did make me wait to finalize with the Lie-nance Manager. Shut him down too and that only took about 10 minutes. Stick to your guns.
OK..nice tip. I will do this next time.
Believe it OR NOT, I stood up and walked away a few times when this kind of sales pitch was thrown at me!!! This people thinks car buyers are simply stupid!!!
Walking away is okay. But why not turn it around on him? “You’re giving me the break even. I want a good deal. A good deal for me is that you give me $18k AND you sell the car. If you want to make a car deal sometimes you have to work for it.”
Absolutely amazing! Great video!
I've private sale'd several cars. I've never had that level of hassle. I've sold my cars in a week or less.
Any tips to doing this?
@@raamvan Be honest, be open and show what you are selling is good value. Also have all service books available.
When I was training as a car salesman, the sales manager told me the object of the dealership was to get the customer to pay the absolute most for the vehicle.
Love your videos especially when you use a seller own tactics to explain what they are doing to get you to get them a deal not for you both but for them
Awesome. Next up is a reaction video to Any Elliot about a newby salesman who made $16,000/month within the last year and this inflated car market. Should be a good one. Hit the notification bell and you'll get a notice when it's up. Shooting for Saturday or Sunday. Thanks!
I immediately walk away from guys like this. Really proud of himself.
I'd support fully doing away with the clown circus that's dealer auto sales.
That old gluy is so far out of date, he should sharing this BS with his "friends" in the home!

I did 72 months payments but paid it off in 23 months. Let's say, the bank was not happy when I wrote the final check but nothing they could do about it.
Have you heard about finance term called payment amortization schedule?
@@stepanbaltyan2189 yes, but I don't see any benefits in it. The way I did it, I saved way more money in interest.
Awesome my guy!
Never met a bank that had emotions, happiness sadness ect?? They always told me same thing over and over, “nothing personal strictly business”...lol
The bank wasn't happy. Hmm. This is the same as buying a house and the bank looks forward to 30 years worth of payments Then the house sells a few years down the road and the bank's loan gets paid off. People do it all the time. Mr Banker, too bad !
I've been screwed before on the extended warranty on a car. I had an out of state original purchase where I wanted to close out the warranty, when I called the dealership to get the information they couldn't find it. The call was passed 3 times and everyone was numb about it.
He's mooching foe a free dinner. LOL
The last car I bought. I told the salesman I will buy it as is no dealer installed add on. Or else I will not buy the car. Sent me to the finance office and when I told them I have the cheque to pay for the car. The FO asked me if they can buy my loan. Asked what was the interest rate and was 4.9%. Well let me write the cheque and I will be on my way. Three days later the check engine comes on. Went back to the dealership and was told just drive it around with out any explanation why it came on? Left and they never saw the car again even for maintenance. 😂
When I was beginning my search for a new vehicle last year his videos were among the many I came across (It's also how I discovered your channel), and this was the first one of his videos I watched. I honestly thought it was some sort of parody about car salesmen, like an SNL sketch or something. It's sad to think that people get fleeced by guys like this. He's quite thin skinned and defensive if you're critical of anything he says. That alone tells you that he's a con man.
Like every other business owner/professional, I checked out his Linkedin.
Let's just say his testimonials are from other con artists like him.
"He's quite thin skinned and defensive if you're critical of anything he says."

So was the Finance Mgr. at my Jeep dealership when the paper he handed me with all those usual "extras" (5-6 of them) he was trying to sell me. I slid it back to him saying I looked them all over (in seconds as I was anticipating them) and I wanted NONE of those things.
His demeanor changed immediately and he went silent -- NOT a happy "friendly" Finance Mgr after that.
And I wasn't seeing him because I was getting dealership financing -- I was using my own lender (USAA Bank) -- it was, as usual, just the last stop in the process so I could buy the extended warranty and other items. No thanks.
Still, they DID rip me off big-time on my trade-in although it WAS almost right-on what CarMax and KBB Cash Offer would have given me (no, couldn't sell to a private party at that time) but at least I got a great out-the-door price on my new vehicle.
So, it COULD have been a whole lot worse...

I just started checking out his videos. You should “react” to ALL of them!! I may add them to my playlist to even better understand the “dark side” haha.
I'm sure Steve just loves it that we're doing this!
That "salesman" is the reason more people are starting to use auto brokers and one-price dealerships.
Also on of the reasons people buy private party.
Very entertaining. I sold cars and would wrap it up in less than an hour / out the door, paperwork done & customer happy. There is no need for these circus acts and to take 3-4 hours to sell a car. Insane. Walk away from a circus monkey like this. Thanks Kevin for great information
Great knowledge keep up on this.
More to come! I'm sure Steve Richards is delighted that we are reacting to his videos.
I'm getting a royal education on sleaze ball car salesman I'm loving every minute of you and I am going to use it on my next car purchase which is going to be in the very near future
What's sad is that Steve wouldn't be doing this if it didn't work for a lot of people. The onus is just as much on the consumer to not put up with this crap for dealers to stop using shady "tactics" like this.
yes Buyer Beware; but the Buyers dont come in to the dealership's shop looking to rip off the dealer...
Hell yeah! Sure I'd invite Steve for dinner!!!
We may don't remember it now, since we've all had TV sets in our homes for 70 years now, gaming consoles, Internet, smartphones are something natural for whole generation now. BUT, back in the days people were seeking for entertainment! Centuries ago you had people playing music at your dinners, there were clowns/fools, story tellers traveling from settlement to settlement.
Sure I'd love to say to my family:
You folks have to listen to this, this guy tells amazing stories! It's hilarious!!!
I like the reaction to these tactics in a previous video. “if you continue going into the weeds I’ll end this conversation now and go to another dealership”. The only way I’d invite him to dinner is if my mother-in-law was cooking! 🤗
That bad huh? Lol
When he says "you can invite me over for dinner" I'm picturing the guy from the Stoffers commercial 🤣
Awesome video. Customers need to be smart and avoid these types of sales associates. Customers are in control, don’t let these tactics work in favor of the salesperson. I would walk out without question if this was my salesperson!!!
The last time I bought a car, I was shocked, shocked I tell you, when after we had settled on the price with the salesman (no unwanted fees or options) I told him I don’t want to go the finance office, and he agreed. We settled the transaction with my writing a check and the dealership delivering the car and papers. I didn’t lie, but I also did not disabuse the salesman of the idea that we would be financing the car.
Actually I’ve watched a lot of Steve’s videos. And from what I understand these were filmed while he was training other salesmen, dealerships seem to pay him to come and train their salesmen. I jus find it fascinating how creative they get at answering objections 😄
math hint: If the total price of the vehicle is lower then inevitably the monthly payments will be lower
The key to any retail sales engagement is to just keep the discussion going, as long as possible.. It’s a proven fact that the longer the conversation goes on, the higher percentage chance the deal closes.
I would have asked him if he knows Carmax or Carvana? Its so easy to sell to them from comfort of your home! They don't even haggle on prices and are very lenient on quality. Just sell to them instead of doing Craigslist or something
The last new car I bought, I went to the dealership after researching what people were paying for the car I wanted.
The car stickered for 17,900. I told the salesman I would pay 16,300, and I had a trade in that I wanted $6,000 for.
I told him these numbers are not negotiable and I will not sit and wait in their little room, and he has 5 minutes to make it happen or I am down the road. He talked to the sales manager and came back and we made the deal.
Most people aren’t on YT doing extensive research before buying a car. That’s why these tactics work. My favorite is when he tell people that nitrogen filled tires will increase their longevity by 50%. If you don’t know any better you would buy into it to.
Awesome job ! Love listening to you guys 👍 in the market to buy you guys are a big help no ! You guys Rock !
I got the same interest rate at 60 months as 48 months so I just did 60 months. But I’ve paid an extra 25% every month for the first year of the loan so some of us have discipline lol.
In Toronto Canada the Jeep dealerships would rather lose a sale than make a sale .visited 4 dealers and realized they have no idea why their lors are full .
BAD MANAGEMENT
Hi Kevin I recently visited a dealership to test drive a new vehicle. I have been watching your videos and I walked around the vehicle to inspect it like they do when you want to trade a vehicle in. I found 3 scratches on a new vehicle not only did I find them I pointed them out to the salesman. Know if someone wanted to buy this vehicle without seeing your videos they would have bought vehicle without inspecting it. I know in the past I have done this. But God was watching out for me the vehicle I bought lasted for 17 years. I really enjoyed that car. Oh the salesman said that the vehicle came off the truck that way when it was delivered to the dealership. Why wasn't the vehicle in the paint shop instead of on their lot to be sold to the unsuspecting victim.
This has been a long time coming and this video did not dissappont!
Great reactions from both of you picking apart steve and his sleazy, condescending tactics.
Arrogance, ignorance and outright falsehoods! Great content Kevin! Splash guards 😂🤣😅 love your informative content. Oh and the get up and leave works great and best option always when dealing with one of these scam artists! 🇺🇸
I would have started by telling that salesman "take those sunglasses off your head, you look stupid with them on."
Well, he did use the word "fair", but a matter of his perspective.
........I'm watching "Death Of A Salesman" right here & it's hilarious!.... Thanks, Kevin/Elizabeth.....
Richards has made a three decade long career of living high at the expense of people who simply needed transportation. Hell is going to be such a huge place.
There's an old saying that goes:
"Well, it sure beats a poke in the eye with a sharp stick."
This would not apply to any car buying experience that involved Steve Richards. Given a choice, I'd opt for the stick.

I was in this same situation at a dealership. They called me when i got home and told me they would give me what i wanted for my trade go back and all they did was increase the price of the new car.
Fantastic video .
Listen, You are helping customers get the best deal, and he is helping dealers maximize profit.
Im sure you are aware this is a training video for dealers that hire him to train their employees.
Love your channel and what you do to help laypeople. Most educated consumers would run from a sales pitch like this, but his communication skills are great and I love watching his videos for entertainment
I've already walked out of this discussion. I'm hoping my 1999 Buick Regal will see me through.
I’m ready go buy a car but am too terrified to deal with the salesman.
Don't be scared
Awesome. Thanks for posting. Hilarious.
Glad you enjoyed it
I went to a Chevy dealership in S Florida. The initial price sheet had BL (bedliner), RB(running boards), BC (blackout package). I inquired what these were and she had no clue. I said you're charging over $2000 for these things and you don't know what they are. She had to have someone come over to tell her what these were. Then the turn over happened and they manager tries telling me "we are giving you $10k off the price" I said NOOOOOO Chevy is giving me $6000 youre giving me $4000. Needless to say I did not buy from them
I went back to a small, local car dealership to fix an issue. My stupid self didn't roll down the windows, and they wouldn't roll down. When I pressed one button, the entire button housing collapsed and just...it was all flat. It was really weird. Fortunately, I took it back, and they fixed it in about 30 minutes. Nice people there. Affordable Autos of Tucson in Tucson, AZ.
Hey dealerships, see how a customer remembers good service in later years? Hint, hint . . .
I have had a few salesmen just like this. Go get in your car and leave. They said to me. I was blown away. Simply, I did what they said and left the dealer. They would call me and ask, "What can we do to earn your business?" my response is always, NOTHING! Then simply hang up the phone and move on.
I never like talking to a salesman in the open air environment where people are walking by disrupting you. At a good car dealer the salesman will bring you to an actual office so it’s nice and quiet.
I could name you a few dealers in Toronto Canada who are like this guy.
I have watched at least 3 dozen of your videos. Amazing stuff how does one go about getting you all to help on a car purchase?
Omg.. Where in GA is this?. . I am a new subscriber bc I'm in the market to buy/lease here and I do NOT want to end up in front of this man... Lol.. I don't have enough bearing not to laugh in his face..
After binge watching 6 videos so far, I feel like I will be ready within the nxt month or so or one of those "best times to buy" times
Wow - thank you for the video - so disheartening to see it in action!
The best thing to do is sign up for 72 months finance and pay your car off on the first payment so the dealer gets screwed out of their incentive money for that bs car mortgage they sold you.
I've done that. They reduced the price to sell me the loan. Ha ha.
The key is to get them off script. I can't imagine spewing the same line of bs for 30 years. Seems very redundant.
Simple strategy to "get him off script"........whip out a joint and politely ask he would like to "spark up, too"
That was flippen exhausting.. and the deal wasn't even done. 😂
Totally exhausting. The idea of it all is to wear down the buyers resistance.
@@KevinHunter I would have bought 2 cars just so he'd stop spewing all that jibber jabber! 😆 ... WAIT A SECOND... now I see how it works, this guy is a mastermind!
Regardless of what someone personally thinks of Steve, his videos are informative from "his" perspective and both "sides" can benefit from them. Heck, just for the entertainment value of them I like to watch, and I never quite understood the personal attacks on him. It's not like he's ripping off the people in the video OR the ones watching them, who seem to love to throw vitriol his way.
I usually tally all my figures and let them know this is my "out the door" offer. I'm in Hawaii and I mainly close because there's no competition here
I definitely want to learn more about passthrough because that's the situation I am in right now with my wife's car. Will be looking at "new" car, but not sure how it would work with selling private party because she still needs a car in the interim.
You're right, Steve. I will pay to have it detailed, serviced, and bumper fixed. Now my asking price for my trade is $20k.
Who lets a salesman have that level of control? He is able to ramble for minutes at a time without being challenged at all. This guy would get nowhere with me.
He cut the last part because he closed the customer. GREAT JOB STEVE RICHARD... I VOUCH for Steve because i been so success in this business!!! And i know he's good.
Thank you. I’d be out of the door in 2 minutes too!!!
Kevin, did I not hear him say, you build equity in the vehicle faster? NO CAR BUILDS EQUITY WHEN YOU BUY IT!!! It depreciates the minute you drive off the lot! How ignorant.
Yes, he misrepresents a lot of details in his presentation. Piles one lie on top of another.
@@KevinHunter he says it as if adding the pin stripe and mudflaps will increase the value of the car like adding an extra bathroom in a home lmao.
I hear what you are saying but you are confusing appreciation/depreciation and equity. Paying down a car loan is absolutely increasing the owners equity regardless of the appreciation or depreciation, unless the asset depreciates to zero or below (a liability). The vehicle itself will not appreciate, which is what you are saying but the owners ownership share will increase as the lien is paid down thus building equity.
I recently bought a car and the finance guy got me a crappy APR. Our bank had approved 2.49% and he got us 5%. Our bank already closed so we had to take it. We got a 36 mth loan and I paid it off in two months. Wells Fargo not happy.
Nice smack down of Ol Steve.
I can understand that a person might be insecure about how the exterior of their car looks to a private party seller. Therefore, the person might get the car fully detailed before the other party shows up to his/her driveway.
A simple car wash and vacuum is good enough in most cases. But if they really worry, they could probably clean their car fine themselves for $25 as well as any minimum wage cleanup crew.
He talks fast and doesn’t stop
This is hilarious , please tell me this laughable salesman is not in Oklahoma City , thank you for showing him off I am in the process of buying a car , I will totally look out for the ones like him .
You guys are awesome👍🏼
Always love the salesmen with the three piece suit and the walmart sunglasses.
Drilling the edges of the fenders and attaching splash guards with screws will probably cause the fenders to start rusting.
What Steve Richards is implying is "This money gap only seems large because I have not NOT worked my sales magic on the numbers yet"
If you do sell it yourself, you do need to think about sales tax issue.. but on a low ball offer you can easily beat the offer
To be fair, he's said this is not the kinda close that is best to use anymore. The video is over a decade old, but it's the highest viewed video on his page which makes him money. His new videos are vastly different..
Went out looking for a new truck in Santa Cruz California. Found a sales man that sounded just like Mr. Richards. Couldn’t get him to focus on the issues important to me. Had nothing else to do that day so I drug out my visit to that dealership for 5 hours. Once he told me I could not get the truck I wanted for the price I demanded I told him that was fine so let’s go look at a different one. He started the same thing once again over the price of my second choice. Once I told him I really didn’t like the second truck I looked at I suggested we walk out to the lot and see if we could look for my third favorite truck. He caught on that I was jerking him off and things started getting nasty. Told him what I thought of his B.S. and walked. Two days later I stopped back at his dealership to show him the deal I got an a brand new truck from a competitor. If your so proud of yourself Mr. Richards maybe you could disclose the name of the dealership you work at. I’m currently looking for a new truck!
I feel I'm a very seasoned car buyer, went to a Chrysler/Jeep dealership once just looking. I was more bored than anything, I enjoyed when the salesman pull out the 4 square. As he changed numbers in one, I'd change a number in the other, he got so fed up and just left. Another salesperson came over and I just giggled and left. No one needs to sell cars like this...
I'm going to have so much fun...my new hobby....
Where is that idiot car sales man at? Damn! he just keeps going on and on. To bad I wasn't there I love to say no and get up and leave. That's my best trait.
I've sold a car privately, this guy's dog and pony show is nauseating! I agree with Elizabeth, I'd have left too!
I would have walked out, real fast. I have had a salesman ask me how much my in I was putting down before I even looked at any vehicles. I looked at him and nodded to my wife and walked away.
These videos are my homework!!! Can't wait till late summer when the model I want comes out... (well maybe it is Nissan after all lolol)
Good luck! Make sure you come back and let our Homework Guy Team know how your car buying adventures go! We love to hear the stories and experiences our viewers have buying a car.
