The Homework Guy Team publishes videos to help Car Buyers. We don’t hate Car Dealerships. Instead, we represent Car Buyers, a goal that’s often in direct conflict with Car Dealer goals.
A CAR DEALER WANTS TO:
1. SELL every car for the Highest Possible Price.
2. CONVINCE Car Buyers to use Dealer affiliated Lenders / Banks.
3. LOAD every Car Deal full of Fees and Finance Products.
4. OFFER Lowball numbers on every Trade Vehicle.
THE HOMEWORK GUY TEAM (THG) HELPS CAR BUYERS TO:
1. BUY a Car from Dealers or Private Party Sellers at the Lowest Price.
2. PAY Cash or Finance with their own Bank or Credit Union.
3. DECLINE Dealer Fees and Finance Products.
4. TRADE / SELL their current vehicle for the Best Value.
THG didn’t give Car Dealers their Bad Reputation. For more than 40 years, dealerships have EARNED it by being the masters of predatory selling. They stalk victims relentlessly, often ruthlessly treating the most vulnerable car buyers (like seniors, for example) with little or no conscience. Car Dealers and their Finance Officers have no problem creating financial devastation for their customers with over bloated car loans, and often do. While the business has had record setting profits, Dealers never stop telling Car Buyers “We’re losing money!” That’s the bed Car Dealers custom built for themselves. We point out the traps and the flaws of the process, and help car buyers get by all the nonsense without being ripped off. We promote fairness, honesty, and transparency, and we’d love to see a few dealers join our mission!
The Homework Guy Team provides car buying consumers with information, automotive news and updates, industry outlook, buying and selling advice, and other help to level the tables. The public face of THG is Kevin Hunter and the master negotiator, Elizabeth. Meeting Andy at a dealership is the perfect reason to get back in my car and leave.
Meeting Andy would be the perfect reason to tell him to STFU and stop bouncing around like meth head.
Good reminder of how the world is....there’s scumbags like him that would take an old ladies last nickel in every dealership.
@@coldsteel998 hey let's give credit where credit is Due. Andy would take every last nickel, convince the old lady to sign over her house, and send her prosthetic leg to the pawn. Shop...for "additional security pinstriping" in the form of a scanbar code.
If I meet a salesman remotely resemble Andy, I would turn around and head out immediately.
So true, if anyone with that energy level comes at me when making an expensive purchase I am out. Plus, what a pathetic grasp of the English language (substain?!)
This guy reminds me of the high school athlete that wasn't good enough for sports at a collegiate level and didn't have a backup plan or the intelligence to do anything else so he got into car sales...
First take away is, not to have a relationship with a car sales person. Pick and choose which questions you'll answer from a sales person. Silence is a great reply.
Answer the question he should have asked not the question he asked
Andy :“Can I post this to Facebook?”
Me: don’t you DARE put my picture on Facebook!!!!
I think that's when I drive to the other guys dealership and tell him buzz off and to keep the car
LOL build trust. I will never trust a salesperson. Our fundamental goals are exactly 180 degrees opposite of each other.
Don’t cave on anything people. You must substain your objections.
the funny thing is if they were honest and offered the best deal, they would sell more cars and earn more...
You would think so but salesmen have told me “ for every one of you, there’s 20 people who will pay anything”
Then they can screw the customer when they get them into their service dept later even more than they do now.
@@coldsteel998 I buy used private party so dealers get nada.
Pro tip, if the manager starts saying what if I could get you 2k off, 4K off , 5k off … Immediately take a step back and say if he went to 5k off , how ripped off was I getting?
@bobcat baldfat drunkbeater that was pretty much the situation, their were some rebates I was not aware , but little known to me my car value had gone way up in the course of 3 weeks.
They’re like a bad 80s WWF tag team….the Salesmen!
Watching a serpent speak. Thank you for exposing how these serpents think and operate.
Good job pointing out the strategies car sales reps use
Long time watcher of your Homework sessions here. Kevin I actually went to a dealer today to ask when the new model trucks I am interested in buying would get to the dealer. Now this was right at opening and only the sales manager was around so we talked a bit about the new models coming. Before I left I told him I noticed that the 'extra' charge of $1,444.00 was listed on the new cars for sale. He shook his head and said yeah I wish we were getting that but it goes to the manufacturer. I laughed and said 'aww come on I know better' He sheepishly smiled and shrugged!
Greetings from Austin. I've been selectively binge watching Andy's training videos on youtube; call it 'morbid curiosity'. It's an amazing thing to watch and listen to his presentations and it's a real education to know what they've been trained(The Andy Method) to do in car sales. In other words, when you hear the spiel/angles/manipulation you know exactly their tactics and can defend yourself/trigger them back with the solid advice of Kevin and Liz in this very timely video. You Guys Rock~!
good point, S.L. "Accept", ....I cant spell.....that I hate watching those videos from Andy.........
A genuine human is always a good salesman. I've been selling for years. People remember how you treat them. And, when you always treat them well, they always come back. Thankfully I had followed your videos before purchasing my first new car and learned what not to do. I passed up 4 car dealers till I got to an actual human who didn't act the way those guys in the video did. I gave my price, they negotiated to the number I was hoping for, and we all won. The finance guy hated me because I said no to 5.25% interest, and I would only agree in 1.9%. I let my no, be a NO :) Great reminder from these sales trainers that people don't need the hype. Relax a bit, be human to your customers, and realize they go through the same things you do. I'm at no loss for business in these very odd times.
My brother just bought a car here in the Dallas TX market. The scam of the dealer was to install a LO Jack in all of the cars they sell. Additional $1000 and refuse to remove them. I would WALK.
I think I got lucky. My salesman was more like Keven. There were options that came with model above the base that I was interested in, such as mud guards and fog lights. He suggested I buy the base model and buy the accessories through parts and not pay interest on the extras. Maybe he's a subscriber to this channel. lol
I went to the Honda dealership to ask the price of a car if I bought it through Costco program. The salesman couldn't respect me as a human being and just answer my question. He had to take me on the grand tour (build value) to meet "the family", offer me a free bottle of water, and so on. I decided I didn't have anything else to do, so I let him go through the whole performance. At the end of his performance, I was sitting at his desk with a contract and an ink pen handed to me. He "assumed the sale." I said, "Do you remember why I came here?" "To buy a car!" he declared. "No, to find out the price of the car. I'm SHOPPING for the best price. At that point, he turned into a little kid who just learned he wasn't going to get any ice cream. Nearly cried. I grabbed the contract and left. One week later, I was done shopping and went back to buy the car, but another salesman was on the floor and he got the commission.
If a sales guy pulled out his phone and wanted to take my picture for his facebook page because I was such a great customer, etc., I'd think he was a clown and walk out immediately.
Yesterday I purchased a Mustang Mach E Premium AWD Extended Range. I called 15 dealers that had them listed on their respective websites. Practically every dealer had them marked up $5,000 to $15,000 (I refuse to pay markups!). I found a dealer who had one in inventory that a customer ordered but was giving them the run around. They offered it to me at MSRP. I jumped on it and drove 90 minutes away to buy it. The FNI guy offered me a few products but I declined all of them. Thankfully they didn’t have any dealer installed ‘junk’ on my car. I used Vroom as a benchmark for trade values. They came within $350 of that offer. Vroom’s offer expired the following day and dropped $900. I broke your cardinal rule of never going beyond 60 months. I went with 84 months and plan on adding a few hundred a month on top of my payments. They even beat my own credit union’s rate by a tenth of a point. I really needed another tax credit before the end of the year. It’s an awesome driving car. I couldn’t be happier. Thanks for all of your tips. They were very helpful.
You’re happy paying msrp? What about all the fees?
@@coldsteel998 just an $85 doc fee plus tax and license. The Mach E has no cushion. Dealers pay MSRP for the vehicle and get holdbacks from Ford if they sell enough of them.
This guy is good. He sells himself to sell a sales seminar. He probably got a nice fee for his expertise, then charges a hefty sum to those attending.
Next venue, same song.
Watched you guys for about 3 months prior to my car buying process. Got the dealer to fold just over $1900 from their original invoice to me. Elizabeth and Kevin are correct: it's about control!
You can't have "SUBSTAIN" without BS in the middle! LOL
Clever catch 😂
Last car I bought I told the overly annoying "friendly" sale guy who kept asking personal questions that Im here to make a business transaction. Im not here to socialize or pretend to be your friend. If your final price and terms dont meet my expectations. Dont waste my time. While I did end up walking as they wouldnt stop forcing products and deal ,I refuse to spend hours at a dealer playing games, I didnt have to listen to all the crap from the sale guy
I thanks kevin and elizabeth for that.
Best thing I can add is to never just walk into a dealership without doing all your homework first Then shop around by phone or email to get someone to accept YOUR deal and be ready for the dealers to try to get you to come in or beat around the bush about the pricing. Just stick to your plan and dismiss any dealer that won't give you the information over the phone or email. It's tedious but someone will take your deal, also be willing to travel for the right car and deal. I live in Massachusetts and bought my last car in Tennessee none of the dealers in the north east had the exact car I wanted or would give me the deal I wanted. Was worth the trip . Good Luck.
This video is a game changer and surely benefit your audience.
You guys rock too!!!
I Sincerely 😊 thank you.
This is so much like the real estate world...."The lack of Human Sincerity". True
The irony of his title -GROSS- made me chuckle. That describes him and his tactics perfectly.
Love this video to see the salesman perspective of us(the buyer) I would love to see you guys do a video on ways to TRIGGER the salesman. I look forward to being able to trigger them as many times as possible the next time I'm in the market. Keep it up.
Take up a lot of their time and then make them a lowball, take it or leave it offer and demand more for your trade in. I do this just for fun. If they go with me on a test drive, I drive the car like I stole it to see their reaction. I've got the money, they need the sale, I'm in complete control.
Also, the best trick I've learned in retail/sales is that if you are selling a product you genuinely believe is great at a fair price to a person who honestly needs it and can afford it then you'll be likely to make a sale and have them come back.
Listening is a willingness to change.
My last car salesman was very good and a mild manor guy who listened. The finance guy was also nice but I was dumb to let him sell me a tire service on a lease which he said it only brings up the payments to $20 a month. Oh that's nothing. Yea right! A few days later when I reviewed the contract I was like, wait $20 x's 36 is $720.00..YIKES! Beware a wolf in sheeps clothing!
I want to go negotiate to buy a car and I don't even need one, your videos are fantastic. I wish I could practice
The expression on Kevin's face as he watches intensely is like " what a couple of crooks!!! 🤣🤣😅😂👍🏿
Kevin and Liz, I don't know you guys do it, but you always manage to suBstain my interest in your videos. Good work!!!
Take pics of your customer? Oh hell no! Now that I know Elliott is teaching these sales people this, I will make sure, I will let them know I’m not there friend! Again, thanks for this post! 👌👌👌
It’s sad that the perspective of sales people is almost entirely derived from auto and home sales, the very industries some of the most deceptive sales practices are employed (obviously). Proud to be a sales person that puts the needs and wants of my customers ahead of my own gains.
WOW 1st class very kool great info.,, AAAAAAAAAAA++++++++++++ again great video I liked it a lot ,keep up the great work.
Always great info 🔥🚀 Thanks guys
I have to say your videos are helping me sell more cars than Andy's. Thanks for helping my gross.
Totally doubt that. Must have been a slow day on the car lot, huh?
Great breakdown. It’s fun to hear your take on these training videos. They must be furious with your critique. I only have one question of a salesman. What’s your best price? And I don’t let them change the subject. It takes the emotion out of it and makes everything focused on bottom line. Not payments, interest rates, or paint protection schemes. Then I hit them with, if you can’t get your best price can I get another salesman? That really throws them. Or I say, where is the sales manager? I love using that one.
First question: " Are you allowed to sell me a car?" Watch them not answer that one strait up.
@@dougb3699 thats another good one. I will add that to my next purchase.
Good Job
OMG If the salesman tried to take my picture to post on the dealer's FB page or wherevrer, I'd be out of there so fast.
Thank you
Great video about the dealership personnel communication steps to take control of myself the customer to get every last penny from me.
Hopefully learning from this video I can keep control going into a dealership. I know it is going to be painful, but hopefully I can go in with a plan of attack on what I need and want.
Not sure what buying cars is so much harder to get a good deal than most any other things we buy. I guess it is that negotiations process and haggling to not get ripped off. All other sales items we do will usually have one set pricing and there is no wiggle room to change pricings other than discounts.
Thanks again for all your videos. Happy Holidays 2022.
I had a good laugh at this. I went and test drove a truck a couple years ago, but didn't understand why it was so expensive etc. When I got back to the dealer, the sales guy asked how I loved it. I said it's fine not as much power as I thought and I wasn't sure why it was 45k. He said let me introduce you my manager. I met him and he kept trying to push me so I got out of there. As I was walking away I heard the manager ask if I liked it and my reaction. That was the only leverage they wanted. Then the guy in the video was pushing it, I thought it was ironic.
I personally do not enjoy buying cars they are absurdly expensive and rapidly depreciate. All I want is a fair price emotion will never come into play. I also want the sales managers to shut up and hurry up. Process my info and stop selling products I will not buy.
Thanks
The whole rah-rah sales pitch can be best seen in time share sales. Do not ever attend one at their property where they have provided transportation as there is no ready escape. At least at a car dealership, you can always drive away.
This video shows how much Andy cares for his own staff. He didn't even give the other guy a wireless mic!
Been studying all this for months getting ready for when my son comes home from college in a week, we need to switch to another car. I’m to the point of just going with Carvana or Carmax and avoiding all the BS
But Debbie, don’t forget to ALWAYS take a pre-owned car to a trusted mechanic first before buying. It’s money well spent to avoid a catastrophe. If they won’t let you, walk away.
I watch your channel and like the information you provide. You often talk about comparing different dealers, which I totally agree with and wish I had ability to do. I live in Anchorage Alaska and we only have one dealer for each car manufacturer. What advice would you recommend for me? Should I try to compare different dealers with similar types of vehicles (such as a CRV to a RAV4)? I would like to know what strategies you would use if you were to buy a new car here in Anchorage.
Build one online. Kevin has a video that talks about this. That way you never have to start with a particular dealerships entry level price.
Forget taking control yourself....let them take control from the start....and let them go on and on and on...and just when they think they have you, hit them with your questions. Why...because wasting a salespersons "time" is the worst thing you can do to them and their dealership. Remember, they're on commission and not hourly like most of us.
I did that to a salesman when I only wanted the price of a car, he spent 45 minutes farting around with grand tour of the facility and all the happy faces who work there. He even had the contract ready by the time we got to his desk. When he handed me the pen, I said I only asked you for the price. This must be it here. Thanks. and left. He got so upset, like I had taken his favorite toy. That was very satisfying.
@@kukkimonsuta5342 Great example!! Thanks...john
#homeworkguy, why is the bottom right hand corner blurred out? The guy in the white shirt is blurred out..
Andy Elliott is a sneaky, fast talking bs artist, etc.....but he's an Eagle Scout compared with the one and only (thankfully) Steve R. Ya know who we mean !!!
“”Building trust is about “The Art of betrayal.”” In the context of conmen, uh, I mean car salesmen, truer words were never spoken. Dropping truth bombs in this video.
PS: I love the reaction videos with this coked up trainer and that sleazy used car sales guy, whatever his name is.
Just a thought 3 years from now will dealers have a hard time selling cars?
If most of the people buying now are going to be so upside-down are they going to have a hard time getting them into a new loan ?
Can I get Liz to negotiate my next vehicle purchase!
Isn't that what CarMax is supposed to be, a no "negotiation/stress" needed?
Awesome info , can't believe they train people like this lol.
You and me both!
Hard these days to find a good car salesman. Would you possible have some advice on how to spot a good car salesman. We saw a bit of this today. My wife was not liking the vibes from a few of the sales personnel, plus the finance manager trying to pull one over on us , like we didn't know what we were doing? Were hoping to buy a car soon , used if we can find a great deal with low mileage and preferably new if we find the the deal that best fit us.
The Marine recruiter I visited was a lot like that high strung car guy. I smelled a rat. I went in another direction. Not saying Marines are rats, just their recruiter I visited was.
Someone on Facebook posted a picture of them with a new car in front of the dealership and they stated, "I did a thing today." I couldn't help but think they got hosed on their deal. If you "did a thing" it would seem to imply there was not much thought or preparation that went into the deal. Also, as a former English teacher, I cringed at the misuse of the word sustain. It is not so much that he used the word wrong, but if you are going to be posting this video on the internet (as an expert) it seems you would take the time to know how to use the correct words and how to spell them in your presentation. It shows that his sincerity is about an inch deep and the only thing he is concerned with is making money from his customers. I found your channel a few weeks ago and will be buying a car in the next year or so and the information you have provided in this video and your others is an invaluable tool to the consumer.
Yes and yes.
The thing I did last week where I said I did was sew a dress for my 4 year old. She loves it btw.
If you're an expert, take the time to use the right words correctly.
I can not remember how many negotiations ended when they displayed a lack of trust. They tried to sound friendly by calling me "Mike", I am a Michael...and a trained haggler. (Generations of hagglers)
I just roll my eyes when they ask you how much you want your payment to be, not the actual price of the car. Pure bullshit.
Now they put up payment schedules all over their websites like the price is not an issue
@@coldsteel998 - Unfortunately, uninformed people fall for it.

These guys are why companies like Carvana are doing so well. I'm not going to waste my time with these jerks.

More reason to do as much of the contact and negotiation online and away from the dealership. I don't care if I trigger the salesman. I don't want a relationship with him or anyone there. How arrogant to believe the dealership is giving me management of my own deal.
Andy seems like an amalgam of a politician, a televangelist, and a multi-level marketing sales pitcher all of which are an instant turn off.
Definitely was thinking the same on all of your points...crazy thing is this is from personal experience of the people I know/knew 🤦🤦🤷. This also makes me wonder if the misspellings were on purpose to be "relatable" and make his audience trust him more ..lol... the theories floating in my brain now 😂.
Sounds like Andy Elliot is telling the salesman to keep a stone stiff face and not act shocked or disappointed at anything the customer says.
The difference between trust and no, is no is a complete sentence.
Andy’s right - all these things are gross! 😂
Trust a car salesman...Bwhahahaha! 🤣😂🤣
"Andy" strikes me as someone who's on Amphetamines! It's as if he's 'ON-SPIN CYCLE,' without a Stop Button. Good Lord, can you imagine living with him, 24/7/365..??? I'd go insane!!! Thx for these videos. Caveat Emptor!
Had to add @ 18:50..., Andy caricatures sad/discombobulated AFFECT (it it concerns emotionally, then it's Affect, not Effect) of a Customer. If that's how he 'sees' his money-sources, then he's just validated EVERY Negative Stereotype of a "Used Car Salesman." Pitiful!
What is a good way to throw the salesman off his “word track” when they low ball your trade in?
Thanks, Douglas. I have a car ordered with the price agreed to, in writing, my variable is the trade. I will have prices on my trade from others when the new car comes in.
Grifter training 101. Bunch of con men. Lie your butt off to deceive the customer. Say whatever you need to say in order to get the sale. Morally reprehensible philosophy. There is nothing in what Andy is advising that is ethical.
They will say and do anything to you so that they get into that $200,000 a year club!
It's clear that most of these salespeople are absolute idiots and are only trying to play on human emotions.
hello friends
I've learned- NEVER tell the salesman how much you owe on a trade-in. It's none of their biz, just a control tactic so they can lowball you.
Say you owe $10,000 and they offer $7,000. ""No thanks!" "I will wait until my payoff gets to the point it is worth more in trade than what I owe" Have a nice day!" and leave! Let's see how much fun the sales rep thinks THAT is!
No idiot, we need to know what your payoff is. And we also need to know if you are a massive waste of time because you are buried in your trade. It amazes me how the people on this channel act like they have the moral high ground, yet they have no problem being a complete dirtbag and making every effort to steal someone else's money.
@@jonsmith1259 If you owe more than your car is worth, it isn't someone else's responsibility to pay for it. Take accountability, stop thinking like a parasite. Also, just so you know; if you keep driving your trade, you aren't going to just magically gain a better equity position by waiting, and we LOVE launching people who are buried.
@@heavyW8champ A year ago, I owed $11,000 on my car, with a trade value of $8,700 After 12 payments of $420 I now owe roughly $6,200. KBB shows $9,600 trade value. Please don’t stick your phone in my face during a test drive. Like, are you kidding me?
I could care less about having fun or taking pictures with the salesman. What would make me happy, would be to give me the price I want, don't try to up sell me on stupid add-ons, and get me out quickly without too much hassle...
One reason I'm considering buying a Tesla as my next car if the government gives me the electric equivalent of "cash for clunkers" is that Tesla dealerships are owned by Tesla with salaried sales people, no hassle, no haggling, and no dealer shenanigans. Beside getting one of the coolest cars ever.
You might want to watch Scotty Kilmer's videos about Tesla. I think you would change your mind. How about the fact that they have no spare tire. Or the crappy workmanship. Airbag unit just falls out of the steering wheel on the first day.
