When I was looking to buy a new Kia Telluride, I called a local dealer about price to order exactly the car I wanted (was willing to wait). They said $10k over MSRP due to Market Adjustment. LOL! I called dealers all over the country and found one that would order my car at a price I was willing to pay (was under MSRP). Had to rent a one-way rental car ($98) and drive 10 hours, but it was worth it. Local dealer will NEVER get my business.
There you go and congratulations on your new vehicle. I'm planning to do the same thing. I'm from SoCal California and just will pick up my new truck in northern California and I paid $450 under MSRP.
@@Costarica-mq8el A few years ago, when I bought a new Corvette, I knew what I could buy one for before I walked into the dealer. Since I was doing "Museum delivery" and picking up the car in Bowling Green, I didn't care where I bought it. I walked into the Sales Manager's office and said, "Look, I'businesssell top menumber
Anybody who pays $10K over MSRP for a Telluride needs their head checked :D. Kia makes pretty good cars but a Telluride isn't a collector's item for heaven's sake. There must be people paying these ridiculous mark ups otherwise dealers wouldn't be trying these tricks.
You need to make sure they get all your warranty and recall business. 😆 My uncle did the European delivery with his Volvo S80 T6 (probably one of the first ones in the US). After talking to every dealership withing 5-600 miles no one wanted to work with him on setting it up. Finally found a guy and all he did was set up European delivery. So my uncle did that and then it would be delivered to any dealership in the US so naturally it went to the closest whom turned down his business several times.
The moment he said "No!" in such a condescending and arrogant manor, would have been the moment I stoood up and walked out without a backwards glance or word.
Had that happen to me once. Sales manager holding my keys, when I asked him which one's ass I had to whip to get my keys the manager literally took them out of his pocket and threw them at me. If my wife hadn't been there with me I would have gone to jail that night!
He could tell she wasn't serious, a 40k trade in and she's quibbling during a shortage where she has zero bargaining power. Either she can't afford what she's doing or she's just not worth dealing with, in any case he could be just getting rid of her. Its not nice, but on the other hand this fake socjus outrage over a person doing frivolous luxury shopping completely ridiculous.
Anyone else catch the "$25 per month for the right color?" Just so happens $25 x 60 months=$1,500. Just another way of trying to disguise the "Market Adjustment"
I would have just used his own logic against him. "If it's only a dollar a day, why won't you come off of it? Your dealership can't handle a dollar a day to get a customer the right color?"
Thats what he was explaining he was saying the $1500 divided into the term of 60 months was only $25 per month. And he aaid a little less than $1 a day but its acctually alittle over $1 a day
@@doomguy3233 More like, wait and pay more. Car Makers have had a rather unusual response to dealers charging over sticker, they said they will start raising prices because they think their cars are priced too low. My Wrangler order has price protection and has went up over 3k if I would have waited. Besides if you have a trade, you are getting stupid money in this market, I got thousands of dollars more for my trade than I paid. "BUT GUYS WAIT" lol, don't be a sucker.

@Dwayne White It is a tag team..it starts with the car salesmen setup to help the finance manager execute the plan ounce in the finance manager's office.
"i'm not willing to pay that much, you'll need to come down on the price" "No" "all rightey then. Have a good day, I guess i'll wait till the chip shortage is over or by privately" and walk out. do not do business with him again.
The problem with that is that private party prices are up, and just like dealers, they aren't willing to settle for less. Ultimately when you're going private party, you need to ask yourself this, if you were the seller, and your car was worth $X would you settle and sell for $Y at a lower price?
@@ericherrero3212 COngrats! You represent less than 5% of the market. I am going to sell the other 95%. This is pretty easy guys. Cars are being sold faster than they can be replaced so if you want one, you're going to pay a premium. Don't want to? Thats fine. We are still going to run out of cars at some point and we are going to capitalize on every customer that doesn't want to wait. I WILL SELL THE CAR... It doesn't have to be to you. Oh, so he’s going to drop the whole deal for a mere “dollar a day?!” Pretty easy to turn that argument right back around on him! Who’s being stingy over a buck? That would be you!
I agree with you! Similar salesman attitudes happened to me yesterday when I was going to a Lake City Toyota dealership parts department accused me of soliciting one of their customer in a parking lot simply by talking to that customer. After buying 2 cars in less than two years from them thats how they treated their customers.
That was his excuse as well..but what's the point of a Trai ING exercise that would be totally inappropriate to use with a customer? If it's supposed to be an example of what not to do that should be stated. But this richards idiot always sounds like this..
One thing I've learned from you guys and others is to negotiate the price before even stepping into the dealership. No need to waste time traveling between them.
that doesn't work, tried that, dealers, salesmen will lie and say I told them different numbers, that's WHY they don't answer texts and emails with prices KNOWING you as the customer can copy that as evidence , when you're inside a dealership and they refuse to give a copy of the sales quote they will also stop you from taking a picture of it with your phone
So recently I told a car dealer that I was just going to wait and he did the “market won’t offer you this much for your trade when the market returns to normal talk”. Which I replied with “well when the market returns to normal more dealerships will have new inventory, creating more competition which will bring back dealer rebates and more reason for car dealers to negotiate. Which should offset the trade in normalcy we are seeing. Also do yourselves a favor and use carmax with kbb/nada and seek similar vehicles that match your trade in the local area you are buying in as way to see what your vehicle is truly worth in today’s market before shopping at other dealers. I wouldn’t be in todays market if our sedan was still large enough for our growing family.

@@randyreynolds7127 I have heard so many people who "couldn't get a deal." I mean you can't just get it because you want it, you need to play the game. I ask, "well how many dealerships did you go to" and they say "oh only one and I told them they had the perfect car for me! But then when it came time to bargain they wouldn't." You have to be willing to walk, and actually do it. In fact one should practice doing this a few times. Although it seems somewhat unethical that's life. You have to practice something to get good at it, and salesmen practice on you all day don't you worry about it. Go in somewhere, get almost to the end and then leave. Feel how liberating it is to free yourself from the debt you just took on, and then remember that feeling before actually taking on the debt for the car you'll actually buy, in case you need to walk.
Yes, the market adjustment is applied to the trade in. It's based off the book value. If you go research the auction prices, they are way up. Simple economics. With that said, don't go expecting retail value for your trade in, a lot of times people mess up when negotiating a deal and go based off what they feel is a good offer and not what the actual market is bringing for their trade in. That's not to say you should just settle at the first offer, but you should research the market and understand that some cars that are booking higher aren't always worth what the books say. In some cases, the books say that the trade in value is worth more than the original MSRP. That would indicate that the new car price should adjust accordingly.
@@lordxandalf So in theory the "market adjustment" was excessive since profits have dramatically increased, correct? If this were a legit "market adjustment" shouldn't profits have remained flat?
@@Mistachill not always the case, I don't agree with the market adjustment that some of these dealers are doing. However, it does them no good to sit with an empty lot, we have already established that people will pay MSRP, we have also established that no inventory is coming in. With that said, they need to hold inventory and make more money to adjust the loss of inventory coming in.
"Steve" is the kind of guy you use this line on right before walking out - "Congratulation, you win (pause to watch their face light up with glee) you don't get to sell me a car today"
The one that has given me the best result, you have to sell cars to make a living, I buy a car every 3-5 years, you don’t want to meet the price I want, I’ll go to another dealer that will. And most times they don’t let me leave. 😁😁
My husbands 2005 Honda Pilot died in February and valued less than the repairs so we began to look. I didn't run into a dealer as obnoxious as this but we got the same story of cars selling at premium prices. We needed a vehicle with little bit of towing capacity, nothing big, but the price tags at car lots was overkill. After watching your channel we decided to buy a used vehicle from a private party to get by the next year or two. Cost less than repairs or what we would have overpaid if we bought at a lot. This gives us more time to do our homework and be prepared when we do to buy the gently used truck we are looking for. Thanks Homework Guy and Team!
This is exactly why dealerships need to start being examined more. These "tactics" are so immoral and unjust that its just plain criminal and above that it a real "slap in the face" I would like it no more than to actually slap some of these crooks right in there face!!!! Good thing that she decides to walk away... BRAVO!!:) As always thank you guys for another great video👍
The challenge has always been finding the dealer who gives you all the information you need without ever setting foot on their dealership. They are hard to find but they are out there.
When buying a used pickup for my son’s first vehicle, we messed around at the dealership for three hours and they tried every trick shown in these videos. We told them no and got up to leave. We got in our vehicle and drove from the lot. In the rear view mirror, I observed the salesman and sales manager rushing out the door to see that we had left. The next day, we get a phone call from the salesman saying that the sales manager was “forcing” him to take the deal we wanted. ALWAYS prepare to walk.
Watched your videos, I purchased a 2021 Tacoma off-road last November last day of the month. I played hardball on is the best you can do! I negotiated $5,000.00 off MSRP and approx $1,800.00 over high blue book on my trade, when 15 dealerships wanted $1,500.00 over MSRP. Patience and my due diligence on being the informed buyer was my best friend! Thank you Kevin for your videos !!!!!
Decoding is a perfect way to put it. That's exactly what we're doing. The example is textbook for what a customer should do, so this was an excellent video to review for our audience.
At 75 today I'll probably never purchase a new car again, but I have been known to walk out of dealership with a salesman in tow begging me to come back in to finish the deal. I think I posted that in another one of your videos. Buyers need to understand the psychology which is used against them and the contrived lies the salesman and finance managers spew in your direction.
At 72 years of age, I too share your exact sentiments having probably now bought my last "new car" just last year for my spouse. There should be a law in very state that mandates that a large, "Caveat Emptor" sign be prominently posted at the entrance of every car dealership. Problem is that most car buyers can't read Latin or are clueless as to just what it means. You can't fix stupid...
Car dealers in the used market are being tough on price right now. They cite the supply, and I get that. But the price bump is way out of proportion to the shortage. Sadly I am in the market for a used car for my soon to be licensed driver son. Trying to be patient and wait for the right Deal.
Man I hate to tell you this but, you'll be waiting a very long time. Everything is going up in price, not just cars. Food costs nearly 25% more, electronics are through the roof at the moment, so it's going to take a very long time for things to level back out again unfortunately.
The market is nuts. I bought a car in April of 2020 (amazingly good fortune time wise) and I keep getting offers from the dealer to buy it back for what I paid for it. This might fool some people but basically it's just "we can get you in a new car for even more money, come on down!" And some actually fall for that.
I bought a 2018 Mercedes Benz E class with 20k miles on it this past December. I drove it until May, put 8k miles on it, and traded it for 6k dollars more than I bought it for 🤷🏻♂️
Car dealerships are a thing of the past. They need to be eliminated completly. Manufacturers should be able to sell directly to the consumer and cut out these riduculous middle men.
Hahahaha MSRP. MANUFACTURERS suggested retail price. Dealerships allow you to negotiate the price because they buy thousands of cars from the manufacturer so they receive a (pretty small) discount on the vehicles (holdback and invoice) markups are negligible in this day and age. I worked for Jaguar and a 65,000 dollar is marked up 1.5%! Range Rovers are marked up 4%. So on a 100k dollar car the dealer has 4K dollars of negotiating room. Have you ever heard of a company named Tesla? Guess how much negotiating you do with them? ZERO. They pick the price, and you pay it. If manufacturers sold directly, you lose 🤦🏻♂️
"There is such a short supply of these vehicles and such a high demand..." ...that maybe you should consider a cheaper, yet high-quality used vehicle to suit your needs.
Great video. I would have walked when he started getting an attitude. But, I'll have to say, When I'm going to keep a car for 15 or more years, I'm going to get the color I want :)
I wanted to buy a Subaru outback wilderness, and the dealership wanted MSRP (40k), I asked for a discount, and they said no. Well, I guess I will continue driving my old honda civic for 2 more years and put the downpayment into the market (15k). Let me tell you, there are plenty of good plays that will double your initial investment in one year. A hint: oil companies. By the way, I have enough $ to buy more than 10 new of those outbacks, but I refuse to let my $ go without getting tangible value for it. As I said, if I can wait 2 more years for a new car even though I have the $ to buy it cash, you can also. By the way, I drive a 2006 honda civic with 207k miles. Be smart with your $, don't let others shame you for being frugal. At the end of the day, you are the buyer, so you have the last saying.
These “adjustments” are designed to soften you into paying MSRP for a generic economy car and thinking you won and got a good deal 😆. Seriously though, complain to corporate; some (but not all) carmakers hate this practice and will reduce a dealer’s SUV allocations as punishment!
“Go ahead, and initial that payment, and sign right there!” He’s just so enthusiastic about what a great deal this is for you! He’d sign it himself if he could!
I went to a car dealer that advertised a 1965 mustang that was sold by the time I got there. Not surprised. They turned me on to another car, not surprised. I told them I would buy it only if payments are less than $300. The 'best' deal they could do is $305.47 and asked me 'Are you going to let $6 come between you and this car?' (that I don't need). I said 'Are you going to let $6 come between you and this sale?' He did and I didn't get a car I didn't need.
This video just made my day and now I’m definitely going to wait to buy a new car once they become more reasonable and I have the opportunity to make a larger down payment. YOU GUYS ARE THE BEST!!!
Love this video. I’m in NEED of a car and unfortunately I have to buy one ASAP. After watching this video i’m starting to feel a little nervous. I don’t know what to do
I got angry listening to that guy in short order and knew I would not deal with such a person. I've seen some of his training videos with a bunch of salesmen trainees clapping like seals. Glad I have not encountered such people...so far...
Will never forget the time my husband and I went into a dealership and I was looking for a jeep. At the time I was in my early twenties. My last two cars were manual transmission, manual choke and you had to manually lock the hubs for 4 wheel drive. When the salesman finally even acknowledged me to point out that my husband shouldn’t let ‘his little woman’ drive the Jeep. I laughed in his face and we walked.
May I make an admission?. I am at least 8 to 10 years away from having to buy another car yet this subject about car buying is highly interesting. Why?

very good, enjoyed watching that, learned a lot, I play the waiting game buying a new vehicle, I give the dealer all the time he needs to meet my price, most never call me but sometimes I get lucky when a dealer will call me 2 weeks later meeting my price, me, I have fun fighting with salesmen, and LOVE it when they answer your question with another question, and they HATE it when I write down a question to ask them
I think I’m going to openly record the salesman next time I’m in a dealership and inform them I’m going to scrutinize EVERY. SINGLE.WORD. they say. If they don’t agree with my tactic, I walk.
Here's the thing, if you go in looking for a fight, you will always get a fight. If you're going to negotiate a deal, then negotiate a deal. Don't go in and be a jackoff for the sake of "negotiation", that never accomplishes anything. Never Split the Difference, Negotiating like your life depends on it. Feel free to ask your salesman how he gets paid. if he gets paid off gross he might try to upsell you if he gets paid per unit he has no intention to and has no incentive to. Unfortunately, it's a sellers market now. The dealer can just let you leave and wait for someone who's willing to pay what they want, it's not like the old times that they would get stuck with inventory if they did that. The inventory is so low, that they can pick and choose their costumers. I used to hear at least 3 ads for dealerships on the radio on every commercial break... I drove for 1.5 hours today and heard NONE!
@bobcat baldfat drunkbeater Sure, but they would still be more expensive than what we could get them for in 2019-2020. No shortage at Toyota because they have stockpiled chips because unlike Americans they look 30 years ahead not the next quarter. This is why their cars (and Mazda/Honda) tend to be better cars and once you shift away from an American pile of crap to a Japanese car they tend to never go back. My advice when planning to buy a new or used car is to try and compile a list of 7-10 vehicles in order of preference and just be willing to buy your 10th choice. Do your research and know the value of your car - get financing through the bank ahead of time and don't know exactly what add ons you are willing to buy like extended warranties or body side moulding to the moonroof cover etc and stick to it. For a new car why not just go to the manufacturer's website and build the vehicle yourself. Print it out - know what it will cost bring it to the dealer and see if they have one very similar to beat the price. Also, find a good local mechanic - and never bring it to the dealer for any work as they gouge you there as well. Bring your car to Scotty Kilmer.

Funny story of my credit score, I paid off the mortgage on my home as well as my student loans last year. That tanked my 830 credit score because now I had almost no credit history. He then said, "but wait we got the payment you wanted." My told him, "I don't care about the payment, I have no debt. Go ahead and make it a 3 year loan LOL." His final offer was 2.23% :) Yep. $1,500 that's a pretty cheap a×× paint job, they usually cost way more then that.
Thats what he was explaining he was saying the $1500 divided into the term of 60 months was only $25 per month. And he aaid a little less than $1 a day but its acctually alittle over $1 a day

"No"
"all rightey then. Have a good day, I guess i'll wait till the chip shortage is over or by privately"

The problem with that is that private party prices are up, and just like dealers, they aren't willing to settle for less. Ultimately when you're going private party, you need to ask yourself this, if you were the seller, and your car was worth $X would you settle and sell for $Y at a lower price?

One thing I've learned from you guys and others is to negotiate the price before even stepping into the dealership. No need to waste time traveling between them.
that doesn't work, tried that, dealers, salesmen will lie and say I told them different numbers, that's WHY they don't answer texts and emails with prices KNOWING you as the customer can copy that as evidence , when you're inside a dealership and they refuse to give a copy of the sales quote they will also stop you from taking a picture of it with your phone
@@BartStar009 Then that dealership really does not want to deal or make the sale. Walking away is easy. Often times they'll charge you down.

You have to be willing to walk, and actually do it. In fact one should practice doing this a few times. Although it seems somewhat unethical that's life. You have to practice something to get good at it, and salesmen practice on you all day don't you worry about it. Go in somewhere, get almost to the end and then leave. Market adjustment is just another word for extortion. Does that market adjustment also apply to your trade-in?
Price gouging! 😄

I called Steve Richards thin-skinned once, and he responded by saying that him responding to viewers boosts his channel's views.

Patience and my due diligence on being the informed buyer was my best friend! Thank you Kevin for your videos !!!!!

@Bones McGillicuddy I guess if you want to get political then yes and possibly no. Depends on the extent of the damage done.
The market is nuts. I bought a car in April of 2020 (amazingly good fortune time wise) and I keep getting offers from the dealer to buy it back for what I paid for it. This might fool some people but basically it's just "we can get you in a new car for even more money, come on down!" And some actually fall for that.
Same here. I just bought my car less than a year ago.
I bought a 2018 Mercedes Benz E class with 20k miles on it this past December. I drove it until May, put 8k miles on it, and traded it for 6k dollars more than I bought it for 🤷🏻♂️
Who would want 2 buy from that guy

MSRP was $44k, I negotiated down to $36,500 (price of a base model) before tax, tag, and fees. Thanks to your vids and walking me through the process. Also went into the finance office, had lots of fun there. Told them I wanted 1.9% They told me the best I could get was 5.4 with my "OK" credit score (of 730). The finance guy was furious, they didn't make as much money off of me as they had hoped. He was soo mad after I agreed to the terms. I got a great deal and learned a lot from you and your advice. Thanks!
Car salesman are the sleaziest. They remind me of those "pickup artists."
I don't see how these worms sleep at night!
@@1linkbelt these type of scumbags get a kick out of ripping people off. They sleep just fine but I guarantee they sleep all alone as they only know how to use people.
It really depends on the individual but boils down to the dealership management. I did a thorough demo, listened to my customer and discovered their wants/needs but the management would shit all over my four-square with the red marker and do the song/dance nonsense and killed the majority of my deals.
@@1linkbelt on a bed under blankets... how do you sleep at night?
@@dubsteppro777 I sleep with a clear conscience!
The average market adjusted value in Las Vegas Nevada is $10,000 + and that is on top of MSRP and they have another three to $4000 Of additional add-ons that they put on ‘the third sticker’ when I asked the salesman was the third sticker was for he said that’s the actual sales price, $14,000 added on top of MSRP I said I won’t pay it he said we won’t back off on it I said no thank you, as I walked out of the dealership they were only two people Looking at cars to buy I was the third and I was walking out the door.
It's Times Like These.. thank God I pay cash and pay in full for my vehicle..
Actually, these days cash is not king when buying cars. If you have cheap credit available, you can make money buying and selling.
@@donmoore7785 actually money is still King in some ways.. this is why people are in debt today because that buying everything on credit God forbid you don't have great credit to go to pay a lot more for the car..
@@skapunkoialternativeliving6522 the dealership makes more off the financing than that car. Call the bank the second you take delivery and get the 2 week payoff. Another option is to use this to roll some of your emergency fund into IBonds. They go totally liquid in 6 months, but your money is locked in untill then
Lets see it is 2021; I still have my 1996 Ford F250 super cab with 76,000 miles on it, so I think I have patience.
I have been working on cars since I was 12. If I can't fix it, I know a good mechanic that is very honest. Beyond that I can wait.
I like your videos but the problem with your way of thinking is poor folks like me can't afford any vehicle, this clown I'd walk out on.
Lmao @ drawing the glasses on him at 0:48… I love your breakdown of Steve Richards videos. You can make an entire channel dedicated to Steve and I’d watch every single one. You know every single one of his talk tracks at this point it’s great hahaha.
We like to have a little fun with it!
Doesn’t this guy have a RUclips channel and teaches car sales men?
this channel freaking rocks!!! love you guys
