When I bought a car from a local Chevy dealer the finance guy was telling me all that could go wrong. I told him i might not buy the car after he said that. I almost walked out. I told him i am not interested in any extra stuff. I didnt need the extended warranty. I saved $2000 on my car deal.
Exactly, what's wrong with this car that I need extra warranty? Are you selling my a POS? Are repairs unreasonably expensive? are you temping me to overextend my finances to the point a repair bill or two would be a disaster?
Truth! I said almost this same thing to a dealer finance guy. Actually I jokingly accused him of working against what the front office sales guys spent a lot of time saying to us. (That the product was reliable.)
Our sons girlfriend is 20 years old, from Ecuador, and speaks broken English. She is taking English classes. Her and her mom (no English) went to North City Honda and got taken to the bank. A used 2020 Honda Civic (29,322 miles) was advertised for $24,895.00 cash price. After the Finance guy got through with her the price was $35,336.38. After the 25.72 % finance charge and 72 payments the cost is $68,910.00. I drafted a letter attempting to cancel the contract under the Illinois 3 day cancelation exception and had her affix her signature. My son and I accompanied her to the dealership and were sternly rebuffed by Manager Vic whom would not give us a card but wrote his name and title on a post-it note and misspelled MANAGER. Needless to say I will be visiting the FTC tomorrow morning 7/17/2023. Unbelievable how these people operate without conscience. 😳

I guess the pressure wasn't quite so high 30 years ago since we never met the finance guy, but they still tried to "sneak" some of those extra charges in. We had negotiated an out the door price (we thought) and were using the manufacturer's special low rate financing. Fortunately I had my financial calculator with me. When the sales agreement arrived, my wife, who was a lawyer, read the documents and I checked the numbers. The payments were not what I had calculated and we ultimately had to send it back to finance THREE TIMES to remove all of the extras they had larded into the contract. We actually found one more, but it didn't seem worth disputing the $ 29 document filing fee. Document fees have grown since then too, I understand.
As soon as I sit down in the finance office my first line is " you will not upsell anything to me. My financing amount will not exceed what I agreed with from the salesman." it will totally throw them off their game. I never pay more than what I agreed with the salesman on. Including extra fees as those are mentioned as being all included in my original offer. A firm rejection is very important. Don't worry about being rude. Their attempts to steal money are rude.
Haha, when i was leaving my last job, headed down the elevator. The phone rang, in the elevator. I opened the door, answered the elevator phone, hello. "Your car service warranty is about to expire ... "

Complaining about salespeople and only salespeople makes sense if they aren't pushed to be that way from on high. At some point, the owners have to be called out. Until the source of all the basic habits faces the blame in the public eye, there will be no driving force to change from within the industry.
I love the look they give you when you tell the salesman "I've done my homework, my financing is already approved, and NO I will not listen to your financing proposal, and you have ZERO chance of selling me any product except the vehicle. I am here for one reason: to negotiate the best price on a new vehicle-nothing else. If we have an understanding on all of these items, let's proceed to look at a vehicle".

I wish this video had come out 2 days ago. I just bought myself a new car but was exhausted by the end of the 3+ hour transaction. 1 hr with the sales guy (whom lied to me about pulling my credit) and 2+ hrs with finance (1.5 hrs of which was him trying to sell me warrantees, insurances, and financing). I felt like I had to get nasty just to see a breakdown of the two different "gov taxes and fees" categories that were listed. One of which they took off almost $200 because no way car tabs and registration cost over $300 here. In hindsight, I should have just walked and found somewhere else on principle but I just wanted it over with so I guess they won the sale, but not the products. Lesson learned. Never again, West Hills Autoplex. Thanks for the info all the same, Kev.
You're lucky if your registration is only $200-$300. Here in Colorado, an average car (~$35,000) will cost you over $1000 to register the first year. That doesn't include sales tax.

I bought a 2022 new in 2022 and the finance guy had all the paperwork done and ready for me. I was such an idiot I just kept signing paperwork. While he made small talk. Turns out I unknowingly bought every warranty available. At the end he gave me a thumb drive. No paperwork. I asked for my contract. He gave me some of the paperwork. A couple weeks later I was looking it over and it didn't have a breakdown on price. I'm embarrassed to say he added 7,000 on warranty without going over it. So I went back and told them I wanted the whole contract. They played dumb but I wasn't leaving without it. They left 12 pages off originally. Is that legal?
@@danielrobinson2178It’s ethically questionable but not illegal. Unfortunately, unless you were under duress, have an undeniably apparent cognitive disability, or they swapped papers while you were signing, you chose that outcome of your own free will. Kevin you are awesome lst week I bought car for my wife and I did my homework and watch your this video and whn finance manger open his shop I said no i don't want any extra add on and then he change his phrase ask same question again and I told him exact words I know what i am buying and I told you no extra add ons are you going to approve my finance or want me to go and cancel my $500 depot cheque....He get stunned by my reply and within 2 min sir your loan approved as you want......Thx a lot Kevin... When they push their warranty garbage on me I let them speak and then I tell them maybe I shouldn’t buy this car, it doesn’t sound like it’s reliable enough for me and then start to get up. That usually shuts them down right away. Then I tell them I’m not interested in any products whatsoever. Let’s move on.
Loved this video! When I bought my last car, I made the bad decision of getting an extended warranty. My AC went out, unfortunately this warranty only covered the automatic thermostat AC and not my manual one. These products are utter crap, and I’ll never get one again ever.
Great video. I'm thinking of going to a dealership of a car brand I don't want and practice this and when it's all said and done I can say "No thanks" and get up and walk out.
I love it. The finance guy is basically telling the client "Hi, I am selling you a garbage product, so now I am trying to sell you the twine and glue to keep it together"
@@KevinHunter On my last new car purchase which was Dec 2017. I told the salesman I didn't want to even be offered insurance or additional add on BS. To my surprise that is exactly what happened. The F&I lady did not even mention it. I threw them a bone by financing with Ford Motor Credit which matched my Credit Union and was on my way in minutes. This occurred at Sunrise Ford, Fort Pierce, FL.
Great video Kevin! This one is pretty dang accurate. I’ve seen some really crappy finance managers in my time in the car biz and most of them sounded exactly like this word track. My advice as someone who not only sells cars but on occasion buys them myself is ONLY BUY THINGS THAT YOU SEE VALUE IN. I buy things in the finance office myself but only if it’s worth it and I personally see value in it....because in that moment, I’m a customer myself. Use your judgement, don’t get lost in the sauce, and ALWAYS REMEMBER, you can always come back and buy it later. There’s not a single thing that you can’t take home a brochure, do your research on, and come back and buy later if you so choose.
I purchased my last car about 2 years ago and the dealer salesperson mentioned a extended warranty I asked them if they were concerned about the quality of a vehicle they were selling me. I told them extended warranties are for poorly made vehicles. They're like service contracts if you need a service contract you need to question the quality of the product I'm not interested.
These videos are great because they focus on where you can get hit hard. But I'd still like to see more role playing on actually negotiating the price of the car. I've had an offer for "$500 over invoice'. Now I know that's probably nonsense, but what exactly do you say to drive dealers down, especially in a city with little competition?
Pay sticker or don't buy. Dealer will sell to another buyer. Trust me. Dealers know all the games that buyers play. Salesmen are taught to not talk. The first one that talks loses. I tried this with a Mazda dealer who had 4 vehicles on the lot and more than 4 customers. If I didn't buy, someone else would. I bought and there was full disclosure; no pressure, no hassle buying experience. That's how we do things in Louisiana. Oh, there was no addendum/bump sticker for Adjusted Market Value.
Trust you....really...why? "Trust me" Spoken like a guy who is immersed in a car dealership, all while the actions don't warrant trust. BTW, when you come here and copy and paste the same comment on multiple videos, that's a very good way to get banned.
Good info, Thanks. I Have been contacting several Dealerships in Delaware & Pennsylvania about a 2023 PRIUS & all of the dealers are making you take at least one accessory of their choosing & one dealer was making you take a whole package worth about $1800.00 . Then another was making you use their Financing plus one of their accessories. What happened to the time when you could order a car with the accessories that you want, not the ones that they want want you take.
This was a great video I just found. Definitely got some of that work over by the sales guy last week when considering a used tundra to buy. Haven’t bought it yet but might do it if they drop the price end of year and I’m glad I watched this video just in case
Wonderful! I will be buying a car next week. I am tickled pink to have this information before I see the finance officer. You have taken a lot of the stress out of this process and have actually made it FUN. Thank you.
I just bought a car right before Christmas and this same exact scenario, almost verbatim from the finance manager, played out in her office. It was almost comical to watch her fumble over words when I threatened to leave and go elsewhere. As I stood up to walk away, with my wife and infant son, all she could muster to say was sorry for the inconvenience and then we signed and drove away. Keep the videos coming.
I tried to buy a new car using your tips. And none of them worked out. I ended up getting a sixteen hundred dollar rebate on a a 2020 Kia Forte lxs. I had to pay there handling fees, lol. I ended up getting zero interest rates cause I used my own money to buy the car. The car salesmen and dealers sell car's everyday. They know all the tricks too. I did tell them to keep there extended warranty and there undercoating. And saved money there. So I don't know if I got a good deal or not. Awesome video thanks for sharing. You make it all sound easy buts it's not easy.
I had a dealer try to sell me a extended warranty that would have doubled my monthly payment. we literally sat in silence for 10 minutes because he couldn't believe I didn't want to "protect my investment" I said cars don't go up in value so what exactly am i protecting?
I think I remember in one if your videos, the customer was finishing up with the salesman and gets paperwork. Customer tells salesman that this paperwork number is what he will pay, nothing else and that is the only number he will discuss and that he does not want to talk to finance guy.
Just bought my 6th new car from the same Toyota dealer. When we went into finance, I told him I haven't bought any extras on the last 5 cars, don't waste my time or yours trying to sell them to me on this one. He said understood and we went right through the paperwork without any hassle.
A couple of years ago I purchased a Hyundai Sonata Sport with the turbo charged engine. Like the finance guy in the video he tried to sell me an extended warranty on a car with a 100K power train factory warranty. He went so far as to say the turbo charger was not covered under the 100K warranty and when I questioned this he said he was going to ask the service manager for clarification. After a while he came back and said the service manager informed him that the turbo was not covered. At that moment I got up from my chair and told the finance guy I could not buy the car and left. By the time I got home I had numerous telephone messages advising me that the finance guy was mistaken and please come back and complete the transaction. I even called Hyundai and got both a verbal and written confirmation (in addition to the warranty statement in the owner's manual). I bought the car but never saw that finance guy again. Being prepared to get up and walk out is always the best frame of mind to have in any purchase transaction. NEVER FALL IN LOVE WITH INANIMATE OBJECTS YOU THINK YOU MIGHT CONSIDER PURCHSING, THEY WON"T LOVE YOU BACK!
If this was a Toyota dealership the answers would be. "No. NO and NOOO" At a Ford dealership the answers would be. "YES any extended warrantee please, it's a Ford its going to fall apart eventually."
Bought a Honda 4 years ago. Told the finance manager we were there to sign paperwork and leave with the new car. He started his spiel. I turned around to the salesman and told him that I was going to walk out without the car unless this nonsense stoped immediately. My spouse was humiliated by my response
Good video! On the recent new Ram truck I bought the finance guy wasn’t selling me anything and just went over paperwork that I was careful looking over before signing to make sure the numbers were right, took 5 minutes! However the previous Honda I bought was worse than this sample, he was using fear tactics and my mom who was with me tried convincing me to sign on to do the extra warranty coverage and I said NO because it was $200 a month extra for 60 months! Then after I said no twice and didn’t purchase anything extra she realized the finance officer was trying to scam!
I got hosed the first time I bought a car from a dealership! When I'm ready to buy another vehicle, since I've been watching this channel, I know that WON'T happen this time!
Just finished buying my truck. However I started research a couple months ago, (which Kevin recommends...taking time to do prior research) that included watching most the videos here, not only once but some of the videos I watched several times cuz I knew they were going to pertain to what I was going to do (paying cash this time, so I really honed in on Kevin Hunter's cash videos). Just to be clear, I really used many of the tactics that are shown in these videos, including the very specific phrases that Kevin tells us to use, or the specific wording to use when you're actually speaking with salespeople or the manager. Yes there's a lot of memorizing going on however, if you stick to it (just like studying for a very serious exam or job!) You will prevail. Much thanks and gratitude to Kevin Hunter and his staff! By the way, I know I saved some good money in this purchase so, I feel it's only appropriate to show them (Kevin Hunter and staff) support by going to their merchandise page! By the way, we need some double x black hoodies! they're out of stock, which I suppose is a good thing LOL.
Hello Kevin, I appreciate your efforts to keep helping people from being ripped off. My only criticism is the customer turn over from the salesperson to the finance person was not shown. As I had incentives for the sales person, the turn over is key to getting the customer to listen to what the finance person has to offer them. Excellent response from the customer but it should not have happened if done right. Also, any finance person who bragged that he just hit a "home run as they say", to anyone, would be fired under my watch. That office should be enjoyable for the customer. They just bought a new car!People do benefit from watching your videos. Keep it up. 👍
Probably best video tips on getting the Finance person to understand they are not the salesman. And you are not buying their products, just buying the vehicle (car, tag and tax). No hidden or additional fees!
I love shopping for cars. I do it for all my friends and family. I let the F and I guy ramble on and on and agree to everything he is selling. Just when he thinks he has made his home run, I pause and say, no, I've changed my mind. I'm buying the car today only if you cut out the documentation fees and I'm not buying any of this other crap your selling. Oh, and by the way, I'm paying cash. That's my deal, take it or leave it. After the salesman and finance guy has wasted hours on me, they usually don't want to lose the whole deal so the cave into my demands. I've saved my friends thousands of dollars and they usually thank me with my favourite bottle of Scotch. Win Win.
Kevin, I came up with my own line when I first walk into a car dealer: "Hi, Please give me your top, old school salesperson." When I get the person, the first thing I say is "Hi, let me get right to the point, because I'm full of battle scars. Let me tell you what I want and then please tell me how you plan to treat me today." Hopefully he will see me a serious, straight shooter buyer who doesn't wish to play games.
Great info and yes, you must use a firm louder tone and say No and if they ask one more time I'm leaving lime this guy did. But be warned, some finance guys will ignore tour firm nos and hit you again. You have to follow through and walk
Excellent advise. Just bought a minivan and the interaction with the finance manager bordered on really uncomfortable after telling him numerous times that I would not buy any extended warranty. Ended up not buying any of it but it did take a rather long time and even an additional conversation with his manager...I guess he was under a lot of pressure as I had already negotiated aggressively on the price...
I’m an old guy and I like to think I’d have the guts to walk . that’s not a dealership I want to patronize. Thank you for the great videos and education.
i recently bought a car. i look at it a day before, calculated the sale tax and put in a little extra for their "fee" and made a cashiers check. i presented it to them and that was it. bought it with no extra stuff and got the price slightly lower to match the check.
This is true. The BS I went through to buy my truck was like talking to the wall with the sales manager. I SAID NO I don't want your products, stop trying to sell me junk I don't want or need or me and my money are gone for ever, Do I make my self clear. it was smooth sailing after that. They wanted me to buy extended warranty, etching, life insurance on the loan, This devise they have for rust protection that I would have to bring in once a year for an inspection at my cost $60.00 . Kevin you guys all going to heaven. I will be using your videos on the next vehicle. Canada
Before you go in to sign out on your car, make sure you see this video again. The refresher really helps. You'll see the game plan of the finance man before he gets to it.
Thank you for your informative and helpful videos. I'll be buying a vehicle within the next year and you have given me a lot of useful information, thank you.
It's a pleasure helping car buyers win across the country. Hearing the great stories of people learning how to get it done, and then going into a dealer and coming out with a great deal... that's music to our ears!
When F&I people start talking about extended warranties my comeback is, "If I thought I'd get my money's worth out of extra warranty coverage I'd simply choose a more reliable brand of car". The same tactic works for the rustproofing and undercoating spiels too.
When I bought a car from a local Chevy dealer the finance guy was telling me all that could go wrong. I told him i might not buy the car after he said that. I almost walked out. I told him i am not interested in any extra stuff. I didnt need the extended warranty. I saved $2000 on my car deal.

Hopefully you no longer sign agreements without both reading and understanding them.
Love that one, showing how it's done with the customer taking the lead and plowing right thru the closer. You rock Kevin
Love this. You have to be firm like this. Even being this firm they will still ignore your No. That's when you get up and walk.
Love from Canada
That is awesome!
The role playing is excellent. Good stuff once again👍🏽
I love it. The finance guy is basically telling the client "Hi, I am selling you a garbage product, so now I am trying to sell you the twine and glue to keep it together"
Pretty much!
I'm glad you cover this stuff Kevin, I'm amazed at how many people I know have been duped by these types of sleezy sales tactics.
Most people have bad credit. Have no options. When I walk in, I already have my loan approved by my Credit Union. Easy to walk away....
That is awesome, awesome advice Kevin. Thinking back I've ran into that nonsense at dealerships before and didn't realize it.
You're quite right. Everyone has seen this, they may just have been unaware of it. Now that you know, it's pretty easy to spot.
@@KevinHunter I will definitely know what to look for next time.
Kenvin ! Totally awesome video! YOU ROCK! As always I enjoy watching your videos!
Pay sticker or don't buy. Dealer will sell to another buyer. Trust me. Dealers know all the games that buyers play. Salesmen
are taught to not talk.
Y’all crushed it! These role plays are beyond helpful.
90% of repossessions happen in the F&I office.
Kevin is the best 👌😁👍 thanks , great video
Wow awesome! That's how you crush it! " I'll go somewhere else..."
The role plays are great!
This was a great video I just found. Definitely got some of that work over by the sales guy last week when considering a used tundra to buy. Haven’t bought it yet but might do it if they drop the price end of year and I’m glad I watched this video just in case
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Glad it was helpful!
Yes. Thank you for this helpful reminder. Maybe buying a car from a dealer is just a bad idea.
Wonderful! I will be buying a car next week. I am tickled pink to have this information before I see the finance officer. You have taken a lot of the stress out of this process and have actually made it FUN. Thank you.
Wish you were around when I purchased my last vehicle. It is exactly how I was treated by the Finance Manager.
Yes you crushed it Mr Kevin 👍 Thanks
Guess what, cars went up in value. Lol. I still wouldn't get their warranty screw them.
@@smokeyj3983 only because of a chip shortage stupid if it wasn't for that cars would've been the same for the past 50 years
I think I remember in one if your videos, the customer was finishing up with the salesman and gets paperwork. Customer tells salesman that this paperwork number is what he will pay, nothing else and that is the only number he will discuss and that he does not want to talk to finance guy.
Great knowledge to know
Thank You for these AWESOME tips
Just bought my 6th new car from the same Toyota dealer. When we went into finance, I told him I haven't bought any extras on the last 5 cars, don't waste my time or yours trying to sell them to me on this one. He said understood and we went right through the paperwork without any hassle.
Great ideas Hunter, Thanks!
Is there a video on buying a lease at the end?
"No. NO and NOOO"
At a Ford dealership the answers would be.
Keep it up. 👍
I can't believe people fall for this, the more he talked the less I wanted what he was selling lol.
Probably best video tips on getting the Finance person to understand they are not the salesman. And you are not buying their products, just buying the vehicle (car, tag and tax). No hidden or additional fees!
Jeez, thanks for the heads up
Take a shot every time he says "let me ask you this"
I love shopping for cars. Win Win.
I rather enjoy the game of wearing them down. Hey if their products are so great why do I need their pos extended warranty?
Kevin, I came up with my own line when I first walk into a car dealer: "Hi, Please give me your top, old school salesperson." When I get the person, the first thing I say is "Hi, let me get right to the point, because I'm full of battle scars. Let me tell you what I want and then please tell me how you plan to treat me today." Hopefully he will see me a serious, straight shooter buyer who doesn't wish to play games.
I like it. I like it a lot.
Absolutely right
Thank you!!
These dealerships don't honor the warranty half the time anyway so its really not worth it.
This really really needs more views and from viewers humble enough to accept that they (myself included) messed up and should learn going forward
Thanks #TheHomeworkGuy - we are in the market and we’ve encountered this every time before. Thanks to you and your team, Never Again!
CRUSHED IT!!!
Thank you, this is preparing me for when I buy a car in the next few weeks 💯
Glad we could help!
Been watching all kinds of videos for a couple of months. Beginning to feel overwhelmed.
It's an overwhelming process, but you can definitely get through it.
Thank you for all the information you are putting on your show. I am planning to buy a car soon.
Glad to help. Best of luck to you!
i recently bought a car. i look at it a day before, calculated the sale tax and put in a little extra for their "fee" and made a cashiers check. i presented it to them and that was it. bought it with no extra stuff and got the price slightly lower to match the check.
Thanks Kevin.
Thank you for all your videos I wished I would have known about them before in 2021 i would have saved about 2000 dollars
But I will use everything you have taught me on my next car that I m going to buy this year 2024 kIA carnival
Canada
Thanks for your awesome comment, Tom!
Thank you!!
I’ll be in the market for a new vehicle soon this will came handy thank you.
Before you go in to sign out on your car, make sure you see this video again. The refresher really helps. You'll see the game plan of the finance man before he gets to it.
Thank you for your informative and helpful videos. I'll be buying a vehicle within the next year and you have given me a lot of useful information, thank you.
Thank you again Kevin. As usual, YOU CRUSHED IT.
Kevin you “crushed it”. Thanks for what you do.
It's a pleasure helping car buyers win across the country. Hearing the great stories of people learning how to get it done, and then going into a dealer and coming out with a great deal... that's music to our ears!
Knowledge vid power
thanks for this video Kavin, were waiting for our car and we have tips on facing the finance department.
I love the analysis of the role play
Great video. Well done. I would love to play the role of the sleezy finance officer.
Enjoy your information very much 😊😊😊😊😊
When F&I people start talking about extended warranties my comeback is, "If I thought I'd get my money's worth out of extra warranty coverage I'd simply choose a more reliable brand of car". The same tactic works for the rustproofing and undercoating spiels too.
