*¡Moana 2 had Max Rafael Waller partially asleep 😴 💤 on its initial 15 minutes that that Max Rafael Waller was enthralled and engrossed that on the end Max Rafael Waller is hoping for another sequel on this film 🎥🎞🎦🎬📽!*
Moana shouldn't even get a sequel to begin with. I'd love if they made a prequel series about Maui's past of how he became a Demi God. Each of his tapestry on his skin would represent the episodes of his heroic accomplishment.
I couldn't agree more! Moana is the worst Disney ever! Same with Frozen, Cars and Inside out I fucking hate those movies! Moana 2 was a mistake! They should have canceled it! Fuck Moana 2! Fuck My Little Pony Generation 5! Save mlp!
@@BioluminescenceOfTheSpirit In that case, specifically just the part about each of his accomplishments if he was already born a demi-god. That could be nice. I would definitely want a good deal of respect shown towards the original lore, which I know they care at least somewhat about given they made sure Maui had hair despite the complications of animating it
Ok hear me out Avengers Endgame (wasn’t boring or bad) But just imagine one of the portals opens up and you see a giant foot come out and it’s Godzilla
The fact that Moana 2 was originally meant to be a TV show is giving me flashbacks to those Disney direct-to-video "movies" that have three episodes in them. Belle's Magical World, Atlantis: Milo's Return, etc.
The first Moana movie was soo good but I wasn't expecting a sequel since it felt complete... And soon a live-action remake? Disney's creativity in a nutshell.
Thats assuming they've had any creativity to begin with. I'll admit they've had some pretty good stuff here and there, but for the most part Disney has just been creatively bankrupt as of late. Also a return to 2D animation would be very nice. The last 2D animated movie was Winnie the Pooh in 2011 but if you don't count that, then it would probably be Princess and the Frog in 2009.
I haven't watch a disney movie in soooooooooo long... and people pointing out this issue is only making me go farther and farther away. Also, I find it werid, since Disney themselves have their merch line based on villains, series for teenagers based on villains and the best and more memorable songs in disney history are from the villains. They are money making machines, maybe not as big as princesses, but adults and teenagers have been enjoying the social queernes of a bad guy since the 50's
They sacrifice so much screen time for the sake of "the twist". I know Zootopia got a lot of crap for that, but I didn't mind it in that situation because the whole premise was based around a mystery and investigating who was behind it all. Frozen, not so much. In recent memory, Mother Gothel and King Candy were actually pretty good villains. Neither one of them are morally ambiguous at all. Not that moral ambiguity is necessarily bad - it's more realistic and grounded - but the whole of Disney is immersed in fantasy, so one-dimensional, evil villains can be fun.
I felt immediate red flags for this film when despite being INUNDATED with ads for it, I didn’t see any sort of actual plot being told to me through them. Just multiple quick shots of “hey, remember the chicken? Remember the pig? Remember the thing Maui yells a lot?? REMEMBER????” Really says a lot about the quality when you won’t even tell me the story of your movie you’re trying to convince me to watch
See I'm curious where you saw advertising because I saw like 2 ads in total over the course of a month. I seriously saw sitn'sleep ads more than I saw ads for this.
that's honestly pretty funny. Imagine being the voice actor for the first movies heroine and you see a reveal for the next project without even knowing about it. I'd assume i was replaced at that point
@@zacharyjackson1829Moana 2 was originally supposed to be a TV series so they recasted them with cheaper actors. But when they decided to make it a movie, they realized they HAD to get the originals again.
It would've been hilarious if they didn't choose to sign on because they were busy. It really is audacious to just assume people have time to be in a movie
I left the theater thinking "That was fine." As far as Disney sequels go, it's pretty good...but that's not a high bar. Honestly, I had no idea it was adapted from a planned show, and as soon as you said that my brain clicked and I was like "OH THAT MAKES SENSE" because what even were all those unnecessary side characters? They were kinda entertaining, but they didn't do much to serve the overall story.
Its poetic, disney wanted to bring back their old golden age with wish but with this they've recreated the 90s with those straight to VHS "sequels" that were really tvs shows
Apparently Wish was butchered from its original concept. Terrible how good ideas get ruined b/c of corporate weirdness. These shortchuts always hurt them, and yet they only double down.
@ryuseijitsu1748 I didn't see it so I will believe you as the person who watched it. There are now only TWO direct to video sequels released in the 90s, but none of the others happened
I liked that most of the songs were a thematic inverse to a song in the first movie, like "Can I get a Chee-Hoo?" is the complete opposite to "You're Welcome!" because Maui isn't distracting Moana with stories about how great he was, he's helping her focus on what she can do after a setback by talking about how great SHE has been. Despite the dumb level up line.
Yeah except the songs weren't that great. Each one was a sad worse copy of every song in the first movie. And everone knows that is a fact. I don't know a single person would say a song from the second movie is better.
@@JoshuaKnab as songs in general? they were good songs. but because they were made by different song writers than lin manuel miranda they have a different vibe from the first moana songs which is why we dont like them as much
The main problem is Moana 1. Ppl love the sonic movies so much cuz it was mid then good then great. Moana was a masterpiece so the sequel is gonna get ridiculed
The "villain" was so confusing. She just acts evil, teleports the main characters were they need to go and then halfway through dissapears from the movie completely.
Did you even see the lightning guys design at the end, why does he have a modern haircut instead of something more traditional or meaningful for his time???
It reminds me of when Disney put "Olaf's Frozen Adventure" in front of "Coco" instead of keeping it as a television short like was planned. Their reasoning was that the overall look and animation was so beautiful that it just HAD to be seen on the big screen, despite being about 22 minutes long and people wanting to see "Coco" instead of a near half hour long Frozen short. I feel like that was just the start of Disney making poor decisions. Some things that are made for the small screen should stay on the small screen, even if the animation is beautiful.
Dude, I remember people getting ANGRY because of how stupid long the short was. Kids were getting up from their chairs. Afterwards, they had more silly segments with the crew talking about how happy they were that we purchased a ticket to watch the movie. I swear, I'm still sitting in the chair waiting for Coco to start LOL
Yeah, if anything, that should have been at the end. I know that some people may have missed it, but like you still have theatergoers who stay behind out of curiosity past the credits, and even before that people who don't zip out immediately once the credits roll. It would have been a fun surprise to Disney fans.
The issue with the "movie" being produced by the Disney Television animators in Canada vs Disney Animation Studio animators is that the Canadian animators aren't unionized, which means they were absolutely crunched and weren't compensated nearly enough for their work. And with this movie doing gangbusters Daddy Disney will be able to break the union without having to break the union, they're just gonna move the bulk of the jobs out of country and pay a fraction of what they would've stateside. And since their bottomline isn't seeing any shrinkage/damage from releaseing a subpar storyline they no longer have to invest the time and effort into quality story craft.
Literally just got back from seeing it. There was a sign on the box office saying “due to strict Disney regulations we cannot provide discounts on Moana 2 until December 11th” and that left a sour taste in my mouth knowing that this was probably one of their cheapest movies to produce.
Disney really thought "Let's stitch these tv show episodes into a movie. That worked out great last time, right?" I never thought direct to dvd sequel style Disney films would return.
skipping through the sponsor while saying "sorry Saber, I respect the gain but I'm impatient" almost made me miss the spectacular view at 3:27. This is why I love this channel.
How much you wanna bet because Moana now has a sister, Moana and Maui will go missing for the third movie and her sister will go looking for them with a new demigod of the sea, Pua's (the pig) kid and Heihei (the chicken) will still be alive and well?😅
I had no idea this movie was even coming out until I went to the theater to watch Wicked. There were tons of families with small kids running around the lobby... and they all went to Wicked.
The sad part is, follow up series have been great; look at Lilo & Stitch and Tangled each had a decent follow up series that complimented their respective movies pretty well. Heck seemingly unnecessary sequels can work too; Aladdin didn't need to be a trilogy, but the two straight to home video sequels were actually half decent for what they were. The problem lies in the obvious here: disney couldn't make up their mind WTF they wanted to do here aside from "make money", nor could be bothered to put effort into making something coherent.
Tangled: the Series was already good and almost got an amazing spin off for a fan favorite character but then Disney said no. Great decision making abounds.
so upset because the moana movie was my favorite, i was confused when a sequel was announced and was PRAYING that it wasn’t bad…didn’t pray hard enough 😩 i hope they eventually re-release this as the show it was meant to be…but i don’t think they will.
For real, the ideas the movie had could have been interesting if they’d been allowed time to breathe. The movie was just a series of events happening to characters we didn’t get enough time to care about.
As someone who had no knowledge of Moana 2 originally being planned as a series, i agree the pacing was off like WAY off. I remember at part in the film where the farmer tells the Maui fanboy “dont meet your heros” but its at a point where Maui isnt being a jerk or has done anything to actually make himself look bad, like he frees himself from captivity in the same scene. When that happened I felt the dialogue was reused, but thinking about it in the form of a series I could see a plot point of the Fanboy realizing that despite Maui being a demigod, hes more HUMAN than fanboy originally believed and maybe that could help build his own confidence and be his own character.
Same with The Beauty and the Beast Direct to DVD movie, possibly the same with Cinderella 2, basically 1/10th of the Direct to DVD "sequels", best showed off in Schaffrillas's video ranking all the Disney Direct to DVD sequels ruclips.net/video/AU_7fm4XJ6U/video.htmlsi=wiZwG8BXqjvAsBrl
It seems like a missed opportunity to have a mortal maiden who's friends with the ocean itself never interact with merfolk. I mean, a sunken island seems like a place where merfolk would take up residence. And it'd be an interesting conflict to deal with how raising an island would rob current dwellers of their home while returning that home to others. Guess that'd be too deep (no pun intended) for a big studio to undertake.
Tbf there’s some direct to home video releases that were better than this through effort alone. The Aladdin sequels were great and are proof that this kinda thing can work if the studios would mind to actually put effort into the projects they spent money on.
We shouldn't be supporting Moana 2 at all. I follow a few people on IG that are are deep into the production side of things and went on strike with the writers and a lot of them are saying, that by Disney saying they were making it a series was apparently skirting the strikes, but not violating it, when making it a movie was violating the strike. Disney turning around and amalgamating the series into a movie is seriously scummy.
going to see the movie in theaters isn't gonna make disney care at all. it's just like studios don't care when people hate watch their shows, they get money regardless so they're gonna keep doing it. what's gonna make them stop, is to stop giving them attention and money
Make it known, one of Disney's candidates for Igers replacement is the CEO of EA. If people think Disney's can get pretty bad now, wait till someone like that steps into the fold
I genuinely hope the new CEO will be someone like Alex Hirsch or Dana Terrance, they literally scream Disney from their passion and respect for animation.
@@ashbasher22nerd93 yeah but they're not corporate suits. Disney's board of directors will most likely look for someone with the same, "see in green" mentality as Iger
@@LKOnyx While true, I want there to be a union alliance of actors, animators and writers demanding creatives to take more CEO positions since I freaking believe those who are eternally greedy have some deep skeletons hiding in their closet. IYKYK
I know Disney no longer has a 2D animation department but I really would love to see a 2D Moana film using the character design concepts shown at 13:24. It's kind of a shame that it will never happen because Disney doesn't value 2D anymore.
They could always mix 2d with 3d (they did that for the first moana movie i think, maui's tatoos were 2d animated i think) or make 3d animation that looks 2d (tangled ever after is this example ive been told). At this point I think the executives are just lazy.
@@msk-qp6fn It is always about the new tech. Since 3D was new, executives were telling us "2D is dead", since Toy Story they were chasing that idea and with Monsters Inc. they REALLY got convinced about it You say "at this point I think executives are just lazy". I'm glad about your realization, that has always been the case, but I'm concerned about how much time it's taking to sink in. Executives want money, not art, for them, a master piece is a box office success, not a critically acclaimed feature.
Moana has a very special place in my heart, and after seeing it today I am honestly shocked by how negative both yours and Schafrillas’ reviews are. I went in not knowing this was originally going to be a direct to streaming series, and I was downright emotional over the beauty of the animation and loved every single second. Maybe I am just biased since the first movie means so much to me, but honestly knowing the production history makes me appreciate MORE how well it came out in the end, without LMM writing music and the original animators they still managed to capture those same feelings the first did while adding new fun characters and revisiting old ones.
As someone not attched to it I would not say its bad but its medicore with some serious pacing problems. It was pretty to look at. So I would say your are being overly generous and they are overly critical. Which makes sense, but that is just my opinion.
I know this would never happen because Disney wants to keep there Princesses young and lively but I would be fascinated to a see a movie where Moana is an elder in the distant future where tribes from different islands are all connected and she attempts to maintain peace when suddenly the ocean begins to disappear which as a result creates a new country and Moana has to send a team to the underworld to attempt to get the water back. As someone who lives in the Bahamas I can imagine the disaster it would create if the ocean levels lowered so much that the Bahamas would no longer be considered an archipelago. I would like to see a story would be like if you take the ocean away from an islander and there island.
And then on the other hand they're already working on the live action. Just... please Disney... stop chasing that non-existent dragon and go back to being good...
@@foliomagi555 The "Little Mermaid" remake has underperformed, and "Mufasa" has "Sonic the Hedgehog 3" to go up against. And "Inside Out 2" grossed more than "The Lion King"'s remake.
I just saw the movie last night, and then decided to listen to your review this morning. Let me start off by saying that I have been a long time fan of your work. I'm a Pacific Islander, and so seeing my heritage and people represented on screen in a second installment was really important. The quest to sail beyond the unbroken horizon toward an unseen destiny was impactful, and for me, it is relevant to how the current state of the world is. I can only imagine seeing the film in the Maori language would be such an ethereal experience. There isn't enough Pacific Islander fantasy content in the world, and to see so much lore and imagination was really cool. I just wanted to comment about the significance of the representation piece, because there are so many of us who needed to see ourselves in these stories. Have an awesome Holiday season. Much love, respect, and support.
even if the movie's bad, the hours it's given me at the theater i work at ain't a joke business is usually super slow in the winter and we haven't had many good movies but tomorrow is my 4th day in a row clocking in before sunrise and clocking out after dark, and i'm only part time lmao. a lot of us working concessions ended up getting absolutely juiced units per transaction (which the managers like to see) because people will come in, order a large popcorn for every single member of their 20+ person group and promptly forget trash cans exist as the movie ends and they leave them all behind
Gosh you're riiiiiiiight, people leaving their trays in the chairs, painting the floors with cheese, and because this movie is too short, it would be a LOT of projections
Ohhhhh Forgie, even my own family and I at least throw it into the garbage. And if we made a mess, we would try to pick up at least some of the popcorn pieces that accidentally fell on the floor, but during a movie though, that would distract people from the film onto someone cleaning up the mess. And yeah, there have been people who don't care about where they leave a mess, which is why my mom used to have small baggies for us to put buttered popcorn in since popcorn refills back in the 1990s are just as expensive as the ones today.
You have NO IDEA how pissed I get when a movie is done and we see the mess the other attendants made like BRO AT LEAST THROW AWAY YOUR STUFF AND MAKE LIFE EASY FOR THE EMPLOYEES!! I just wanna let y'all know you guys are doing an amazing job every day!
Considering that Zootopia 2 is done by the same team as Z1 and had been in production since 2017, I hope THAT does better than Moana 2 (and possibly M3, once that comes out). Like unlike Moana, Zootopia didn't get as much merchandise, despite the cute rabbit and fox characters making for equally cute plushies. And what makes it even worse is that the majority of Zootopia merchandise is limited to China and Japan! Like why doesn't Disney just import its Chinese and Japanese Zootopia merchandise over to North America? I want more plushies of Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, God damn it!
Not to mention that Zootopia and Moana released on the same year but Zootopia grossed more at the box-office and won the Best Animated Picture at the Oscars, even some people at Disney were surprised that Zootopia did better than Moana
I hope to GOD that Zootopia 2 is actually gonna be good now, because at least it seems like that won’t be a TV show reworked into a movie. I am nervous tho, ngl. At the very least, Zootopia 2 has a real reason to exist unlike Moana 2. There’s still so much to be explored in the world of Zootopia and so much to develop with regards to Nick and Judy’s relationship. Pray that they stick the landing 🙏
Disney already released some shorts based on Zootopia for Disney+ and they were actually animated by Disney's main studios. The sequel has been in development for years and its animation is being handled by Walt Disney Animation Studios, so I don't think we're in a Moana 2 situation I just that the film itself will turn out good, I think Disney was caught off-guard by Zootopia's success and I don't know if the movie got more popular with younger audiences in streaming sites, while Moana gross 300 million less than Zootopia, it is said that Moana 1 became one of Disney+'s most watched movies and that's one of the reasons why Disney decided to rework the planned D+ series into a movie
It's going to be a conveyor belt with a bunch of memes and a few things they hope are going to be future memes. Even if a lot of people worked very hard on it, Disney aren't going to let it become a well-loved masterpiece while there's merch to sell.
What can you say about ppl who keep chanting the words "It's a kids movie, so don't overthink it?"" like, we shouldn't complicate things because it's just a kids movie? This is certainly not my opinion, but a handful of adults tend to think this, and I think it's concerning.
It's stupid... as a kid, around 4-6 years old, I gravitated towards shows and movies like Lion King and Winx Club (the first 3 seasons) that made things complicated because it interested me and it took its audience seriously and I liked that and wished more shows would be like that.
It's legit insulting to hear people say that since kids "aren't smart yet", showing them mediocre movies/shows with low quality writing is okay. Kids ARE smart, when I babysat my neighbours kids (aged 4 to 9) they loved more mature movies (like things targeted for 10 yo), they loved the stories, the depht, they loved to ask 1000 questions afterward, it stimulated them! And they do pick up on plot holes and illogical moments (nothing is more hilarious than a 6 yo questioning the plot of Frozen 2) So why don't we put a little more effort in creating good stories for kids and stop taking them for golfishes with 3 seconds long memory?
As long as the kids are happy it doesn't matter _what_ we think. Maybe we should try asking them instead of assuming a bunch of first-graders are just as discerning as grown-ass adults on the internet.
As long as my nieces enjoyed it and had a good time that’s all that matters to me people can rant all they want about Disney and going all into unnecessary full detail about it but let kids be kids and no one saying kids are dumb kids just see things differently then adults especially when it comes to criticizing movies when they just wanna enjoy them without looking so deep into it like some of you all .
@@HashiraHatakeNobody is trying to stop kids from being kids. They're saying that kids DESERVE more high-quality media. They deserve shows and cartoons that will stimulate their brains, introduce them to good lessons and different views and opinions. Shows like that help kids develop to be smart, open-minded and kind individuals. They're not going to have any standards for what they watch, which can lead to them consuming bad media with horrible lessons and morals if you don't show them the right things.
I was waiting for this review. lol Edit: I was more excited to say I was waiting for your review than I was to list my problems with the film. lol Yes, it's very obvious that this was supposed to be a series, and it shows. Cramming an episodic story into a single movie's runtime can only lead to a disaster on the level of the Eragon movie. Confusing at best, insufferable at worst. The sheer amount of characters and lack of development in them (I don't even remember their names) is the sacrificial lamb. I can't tell you how many times I waited for someone to contribute, only to see them used as funni heehee gags instead. It really feels like there's nothing to care about there, no stakes, no layered plot whatsoever. Hell, we even got the traditional Disney villain lime highlighting the BBEG (or at least what I THOUGHT was the BBEG), only for her to just kind of... Vanish. No consequence, no real weight, just kind of... Oh there they are, oh there they go, moving on. Between the neglect to put in meaningful characters and the absolute whiplash that was the pacing and connectivity between the three acts, I feel like this is yet another unfinished product that Disney just did a quick polish on and sent out to be a feature film. Like, give me a reason to be concerned. Give me a line to push through from home to a dangerous land, something good I risk losing along the way other than my pride, give me obstacles that really make me think everything could go wrong, or at the very least give the main character a reason to have so many people following behind them other than to be comic relief and cause some minor problems to overcome. But the one thing that bothered me? The ONE THING that gave me a level of physical discomfort the same as brushing my hair backwards? It was vocal... WHY, ON AN ISLAND POPULATED BY ONE PEOPLE, WHO ARE UNAWARE OF OTHER PEOPLE'S EXISTENCE OUTSIDE THEIR TERRITORY, ARE THERE SO MANY ACCENTS? Most gratingly, I picked out the Australian and Scottish, but I was never able to actually sit down and watch the movie in full to pick out others. I'm a security guard at a theater, after all. But that really DOES bother me, honestly. If they're so alone in the world, if the main story beat is to find other people in the world to connect with, why does this isolated island people have such a broad and clear mixture of background dialects? Make it make sense!
@@TunaBear64 fr Schaffrillas literally made that character easily one of my favs of Moana just by the sheer amount of art i've seen of him on his videos over the past months/years.
Michael Eisner: let's put them directly to VHS/DVD. Bob Iger: 😁😆🤣 okay, let them pay for theaters first. then streaming, and perhaps sell the DVDs afterwards. and license to TV. oh, merchandise too!! 😂💰😂💰😂💰😂💰
I think Jeremy Jahns did it best with his intro for his review of this movie. “CLEAR!” *heart monitor flatlines* “*sighs* Call it.” “But doctor-!” “Call it! Another one falls… to sequel-ites.”
There was good character development in this though. We see Chief Tui happy to be on the water and he is more trusting of and open with Moana. Moana further learns to rely on other people and also be more mindful of their needs and wants, she is literally willing to sacrifice her life for her people/the world when put to the test, and she keeps pushing when she’s out of her comfort zone with Matangi and the unresponsive ocean and having to work with a crew. Maui is less of a gimmicky character and shows great self sacrifice and grief when he previously put up a front of being brash and aloof towards humans. He genuinely listens to and comforts Moana far more than he did in the first movie. We find out he’s been avoiding her and humanity out of fear of them being harmed by the gods, while in the first film we see him yearning for attention and praise and being reluctant to seek out redemption. The pacing was off, the crew member characters weren’t well-developed, the sentient coconut character was cringe, Matangi had a lot of unused potential, and the anime-training-arc-level-up song was kinda cheesy (the firebending was cool though). But the character development for those returning ones was good. Also it is important to note that while Simea is fairly trivial to us adults, to the little girls (who you mocked) she is likely considered really cool. There’s nothing wrong with appealing to them in a movie targeted towards children. Yeah, Disney doesn’t care about anyone just wants money etc., but the writers probably had good intentions with the little sister. To talk about a pointless character, Moni didn’t do anything except creep out Maui and almost die in order to make Moana feel even more guilty and crushed in her lowest moment. The movie really paid tribute to many Polynesian cultures and countries. The first movie had some of the aesthetic and a decent mythical outline but it wasn’t the same. There was far greater effort put in to make this movie special to people from the numerous Polynesian islands who have very little to connect to in modern media. When you have an abundance of characters who resemble you and have the same customs as you and have the same mannerisms as you, it’s easy to miss how disconnected and forgotten other people feel who don’t have those things in modern stories and media.
They did this with Cinderella II, Tarzan and Jane... the list is endless. It's astonishing that they're returning to this format as they try to capitalize on the love that audiences have for these films. It's frustrating as hell to see. I was praying Moana 2 would be good, but hearing the negative reviews of the movie just two days after release is all the confirmation I need to know that I won't be paying to take my neices to see it.
I doubt you want to hear my opinion, but I went to see Moana 2 and just came back, and actually it wasn't sooo bad, it was just meh. But when I came in, there were a bunch of kids anyway. Now, after it ended, it just feels rushed, like there isn't much action just like the first one, the songs are alright as well. But you don't have to go and see it, I only thought its ok. It's not the best, but it's not bad either. So just take it as a grain of salt.
@Stew91 it was a series of three short episodes. One was Cinderella learning how to be a proper princess, one was about Jaques turning human, and the last one was about Anastasia falling in love with a baker. They tied it together in the same way they did for Belle's Tales of Friendship, by telling each episode as a story in the film.
Tangled: was likely & hopefully going to get a sequel, but instead just got a TV animated series Moana: was supposed to get an animated series but instead got a theatrical sequel. Big Hero 6: got an animated series but no sequel Frozen: got two shorts, a Frozen 2 & is about to get a Frozen 3 but no animated series.
Considering Frozen 2 riddled Frozen 1 with a bunch of plot holes, a TV series should be able to tie up all the looses ends. Come on, Disney! You know you wanna. >:3
i remember when a new disney/pixar release was big news, now the only reason i ever know a new release just happened is because of people saying how bad it is
Well, at least Tamatoa's back. There are other parts I like. "Beyond" and "Get Lost" are good songs, and Matangi is a pretty fun character who's good will just got sabotaged by the marketing. But overall, this definitely should've stayed a Disney Plus series instead of being stitched together into a movie.
Exactly! They should never have called her a villain in the interviews. Nalo is the villain, she's a chaos goddess in a Megura-like deal with him. I'm actually interested to see where it goes in Moana 3.
I promised myself I wouldn't watch this movie *UNLESS* they brought Tamatoa back. But now that I saw the Scaffy video *and* he confirmed Tamatoa's return- ...yeah, I'm not too sure. :[
We are in desperate DESPERATE need of another Disney Renaissance, and honestly, the only reason I still have Disney+ is to watch actual Disney classics.
Over the past 4 years i got most of the disney classics on DVD or Blu-ray from thrift stores. I'm never getting Disney+. People must have downgraded to Disney+ donating their stuff, their loss is my gain.
Support projects like Pixar’s Elio and hoppers and also Disney has an original next year! Make sure to support these to make Disney see we still want originals ❤
So Moana 2 was originally supposed to be a tv series, but Disney doubled back at the 11th hour and turned it into a sequel film instead? That's rarely ever a good idea. You'd think that Disney would learn from their past mistakes, but unsurprisingly, they haven't. Someday you should make a video about the spectacular failure that was "Earth Star Voyager", Saber. 🚀
No no wait no, they should do Moana meets WWII where they depict the effects of the Pacific theater conflicts on the Polynesians. They could even bring in monsters like you mentioned as characters representative of both sides of the war; Moana could go to the Realm of Monsters again to do whatever movie conflict with the monsters. Bring back Tamatoa as a symbol of greed and excess and the destruction greed brings. The threat is to the islands in the first movie, but in the second it’s the peoples who are in danger and being oppressed Or Disney can do another meaningless direct to dvd sequel that no one watches, they do have a few third movies like that. Those are always “nice”
Honestly, I genuinely think dreamworks is taking over in the creativity field where Disney is lacking. Three of their recent major features (the wild robot, the last wish, the bad guys) have all been amazing. And while I don't like the idea of live action sequels in general, the HTTYD one is supposed to be a shot for shot remake with the new visuals- no "Mulan Remake" treatment. I feel like Wish's failure will just tell Disney that people don't want to see original ideas- which is just wrong. We don't want shitty half-baked toothless movies.
I immediately lost interest in this movie when I heard a radio ad for it that was literally just Maui screaming his catchphrase over and over. It didn’t bother me in the first movie but when I heard that it was the most irritating thing imaginable, and it told me nothing about the movie.
Remember, just because everyone went to see the movie doesn't mean everyone liked the movie. In fact, they probably had no idea what they were in for. This movie is banking on the popularity of the first one, and Disney knows that. So, don't make the mistake of thinking it's success is a sign people loved it. The real test will be the word of mouth after the fact... but by the time you find out if the movie's any good... they already have your money.
More than that, KIDS are the main audience for movies like this and kids don't give a rat's ass about star power or quality or any of the things adults wring their hands over. They care about characters, and if a character they like is in a movie then they'll love it unless it's truly horrible. I have no shade for parents who happily paid their two bits to take their Moana-obsessed kids to see this.
@@jessicastjames6202 It's literally the explanation for the success of every single Illumination movie. The visuals looked nice, kids love grossout humor, and that company dumped truckloads of cash into advertising. That's why they succeeded. The Mario one also had star power... er I should be more specific, it had fictional character Mario power, and also a literal star giving Mario power at the end. People keep analyzing what made this or that movie successful, but frankly it often has nothing to do with the quality of the movie itself. If you're judging JUST opening weekend ticket sales... it's the advertising and nothing else that explained it. Nothing else COULD. But the long tail afterwards? That's when actually judging the quality of the movie itself starts to matter.
I'll always be sad that Strange Worlds didn't take off. I grew up with old movies like the 1959 Journey to the Center of the Earth, so Strange Worlds scratched that old familiar itch. It was such a love note to old adventure films and had some really nice messages, designs, and world building

I miss the days where when Disney made a crappy sequel that's just three episodes of a cancelled TV show, it at least went straight to video where it belonged, not taking up movie theater screens and making billions of dollars.
eh it should have stayed on disney plus and it maybe would have been received better by people...but it doesn't matter, they're getting their money and they'll crunch more outsource studios. Because I doubt they were compensated
Doesn’t even help that four years ago at the Disney Investor Day virtual event, this was initially planned as a Disney+ limited series but at an unknown point likely around late 2022 or early-mid 2023 it was decided to have all 4-5 episodes merged to become a movie hence the unexpected surprise announcement back in February of this year.
Why is it that all the animals are realistic other then the fish thing that screamed like the viral goat and coated them in slime ???? Is it supposed to be a sea hare (sea slug ) or blob fish ??? It just doesn’t sit right with all the other animated animals and creatures and shouldn’t have been added 💀
in the late 90s and early oughts, disney used to put out low quality direct to video scrapped tv-pilots disguised as sequels, atlantis milo's return for example so it's funny to see that history repeats itself
5:28 ... my nephew's wife was Moana at Disneyworld for a few years, she loved it even with the hectic schedule. She went on to be another Disney Princess, but I forget which...she had to quit because she was becoming exhausted with juggling that and her main job, a Delta Airlines cabin attendant. On flights she still gets kids recognizing her as Moana! 9:34 ... Atlantis, Milo's Return suuuuuuucked!!!
Disney is already well-underway with their “familiar properties and sequel plan”, and this is the start of it. Only way it stops is if this and the next few movie are nothing but flops. (Even though Moana 2 is likely to make money :( )
Maybe THIS will be the metaphorical "Chicken Little" that would get Disney out of the mess they're in. Except, maybe instead of being the first to be fully in CGI, it'd be the first to use their Vancouver animation studio (I'd think of this as Walt Disney Animation Canada 2.0).
I remember seeing so many ads for this and always wondering "So what is the point? What are they doing this time?" Just cool scenes that feel like they mimic the first movie, whatever jokes (idk I muted the ad every time cause I didn't care after like the first time), and then a bunch of the characters. I also just felt like the movie was complete. Even coming from someone that liked a lot of the old disney sequels from when I was a kid, this just feels so hollow. They think "More of the same!" will be good and then also screw over a lot of other projects. Sequels don't have to be bad. And even I enjoy a lot of sequels that others might not enjoy. But this? Just screams cheap and "we want to make money!" That any potential it would have just feels dead. And even seeing the characters all again feels so...devoid of anything. Like. I don't care. I don't feel excited to see them. It's a shame that whatever creativity is just ruined because Disney wants more money. Does make me feel bad for a lot of the employees and creatives too. And whatever potential is just squandered. It's just depressing.
Moana 2 has made nearly half a billion dollars in the last 2 weeks and has an 87% fan score on rotten tomatoes. So clearly it did something right since so many people seem to love it. I loved it, and a moana series can still happen since this movie perfectly sets it up. So many critics are so fast to write off a film as bad before they even see how audiences react to the film. If it gets praise from audiences then they should be asking, "what is it about this film that people find so good?" And then come into the film trying to figure that out. If they end up not liking the film after that then fine. But they should at least try to understand other people's points of view. I do agree with him that there are some areas of the film that could have been done a bit better, but I still overall thought the film was a good follow-up to a great movie and a perfect set up for a moana series.
With any hope Wicked beats the hell out of this at the box office and Disney isn’t tempted to do direct-to-video sequels again, but in theaters this time

It would be funny to see him rip off Tamatoa's leg.

In my countries mythology, he was born that way.
@@BioluminescenceOfTheSpirit In that case, specifically just the part about each of his accomplishments if he was already born a demi-god. That could be nice. The first Moana movie was soo good but I wasn't expecting a sequel since it felt complete... And soon a live-action remake? Disney's creativity in a nutshell.
"creativity" because at this point seems they have some sadistic joy in killing the few good things they made this past few years.
Certainly this sequel is far better than that live action remake. But isn't the said remake cancelled?
Bob Iger moment
Thats assuming they've had any creativity to begin with. I'll admit they've had some pretty good stuff here and there, but for the most part Disney has just been creatively bankrupt as of late.
Also a return to 2D animation would be very nice. The last 2D animated movie was Winnie the Pooh in 2011 but if you don't count that, then it would probably be Princess and the Frog in 2009.
the Great Mighty Poo from "Conker's Bad Fur Day" had a better villain song than King Magnifico from "Wish"
I hate that disney doesn’t have villains anymore. They just have morally ambiguous people. Like just cuz theyre evil doesn’t make them a VILLAIN
Princess and the frog had a great villain and it was so satisfying when you see him literally get dragged to hell.
Fair enough if you like truly villainous villains, but the whole Good vs Evil schtick is actually pretty new in literature.
@@chellesama8256You what, mate? Freaking Gilgamesh stories had good versus evil in them.

I constantly see people complain that movie ads always spoil the entire movie but I feel like they never give you a basic idea of the plot
The one or two ads I got for Moana 2 were so brief and vague that I actually thought it was just snippets from the first movie.

Not even the villain. Nalu (I think is his name) was the main villain and we don’t even see him until the end credits scene.
My theater straight up didn’t even change the aspect ratio 😭
Dude, I remember people getting ANGRY because of how stupid long the short was. Kids were getting up from their chairs. Afterwards, they had more silly segments with the crew talking about how happy they were that we purchased a ticket to watch the movie. I swear, I'm still sitting in the chair waiting for Coco to start LOL
I remembered seeing it and thinking I went to the wrong room to watch Coco lol
Yeah, if anything, that should have been at the end. I know that some people may have missed it, but like you still have theatergoers who stay behind out of curiosity past the credits, and even before that people who don't zip out immediately once the credits roll. It would have been a fun surprise to Disney fans.
At least that Pikachu short from Pokemon: The First Movie was somewhat fun.

The Emperor's New School is another example, imo, of a decent follow up series
I haven't watched that in ages, though

The best way to describe it, it’s a 90’s Direct to Home Video sequel with a bigger budget.
Tbf there’s some direct to home video releases that were better than this through effort alone.
The Aladdin sequels were great and are proof that this kinda thing can work if the studios would mind to actually put effort into the projects they spent money on.

Disney turning around and amalgamating the series into a movie is seriously scummy.

Atleast Moana 2 had good animation and some fun things about it.
even if the movie's bad, the hours it's given me at the theater i work at ain't a joke
business is usually super slow in the winter and we haven't had many good movies but tomorrow is my 4th day in a row clocking in before sunrise and clocking out after dark, and i'm only part time lmao. a lot of us working concessions ended up getting absolutely juiced units per transaction (which the managers like to see) because people will come in, order a large popcorn for every single member of their 20+ person group and promptly forget trash cans exist as the movie ends and they leave them all behind
I feel you, brother. I'm an assistant manager at a theater, and it's been HELL
God I can't stand people who treat workers like that, I stress out if I accidentally make even a small mess
It wasn’t the theater kids singing. Theater kids KNOW you don’t sing as an audience member. It was fans who wished they were theater kids. 😂
As a company, seems Disney loves self sabotage. That's. It.
It did receive a spin off series for Disney plus.

The sequel has been in development for years and its animation is being handled by Walt Disney Animation Studios, so I don't think we're in a Moana 2 situation
I just that the film itself will turn out good, I think Disney was caught off-guard by Zootopia's success and I don't know if the movie got more popular with younger audiences in streaming sites, while Moana gross 300 million less than Zootopia, it is said that Moana 1 became one of Disney+'s most watched movies and that's one of the reasons why Disney decided to rework the planned D+ series into a movie
The Original wasn't very good anyway. But I'm sure the 2nd will be worse off.
Perhaps "Zootopia 2" will be the "Meet the Robinsons" to "Moana 2"'s "Chicken Little".
Zootopia 2 is unfortunately gonna be mediocre, trust me
It's going to be a conveyor belt with a bunch of memes and a few things they hope are going to be future memes.

And they do pick up on plot holes and illogical moments (nothing is more hilarious than a 6 yo questioning the plot of Frozen 2)
So why don't we put a little more effort in creating good stories for kids and stop taking them for golfishes with 3 seconds long memory?
I was waiting for this review. lol
Edit: I was more excited to say I was waiting for your review than I was to list my problems with the film. lol
Yes, it's very obvious that this was supposed to be a series, and it shows.
14:39 "Runs into schaffrillas" ok, you caught me off guard there i laught more that i would like to admit with that small joke even when it was called

@@Toontastic_Juju Well that's nice. Poor guy needs good things after...all that bad business.
Yeah
Agreed.

Never heard about Cinderella 2. Was it supposed to be a TV show?
@Stew91 it was a series of three short episodes. One was Cinderella learning how to be a proper princess, one was about Jaques turning human, and the last one was about Anastasia falling in love with a baker. They tied it together in the same way they did for Belle's Tales of Friendship, by telling each episode as a story in the film.
Then maybe there could be a third one that's better, like Cinderella 3
Cinderella 3 was good
Tangled: was likely & hopefully going to get a sequel, but instead just got a TV animated series
Moana: was supposed to get an animated series but instead got a theatrical sequel.
Big Hero 6: got an animated series but no sequel
Frozen: got two shorts, a Frozen 2 & is about to get a Frozen 3 but no animated series.
Honestly tangled series is Soo good
Considering Frozen 2 riddled Frozen 1 with a bunch of plot holes, a TV series should be able to tie up all the looses ends.

But now that I saw the Scaffy video *and* he confirmed Tamatoa's return-
...yeah, I'm not too sure. :[

We are in desperate DESPERATE need of another Disney Renaissance, and honestly, the only reason I still have Disney+ is to watch actual Disney classics.

support other projects. this will make it so the industry becomes so competitive that disney will be forced to improve their quality.
they are forced by top execs to have their yearly thanksgiving movie. But oops, mufasa exists as IMAX exclusive; can't move that up.
What past mistakes? It’s still gonna rank money and that’s all they care about
No no wait no, they should do Moana meets WWII where they depict the effects of the Pacific theater conflicts on the Polynesians. They could even bring in monsters like you mentioned as characters representative of both sides of the war; Moana could go to the Realm of Monsters again to do whatever movie conflict with the monsters. Bring back Tamatoa as a symbol of greed and excess and the destruction greed brings. The threat is to the islands in the first movie, but in the second it’s the peoples who are in danger and being oppressed
Or Disney can do another meaningless direct to dvd sequel that no one watches, they do have a few third movies like that. Those are always “nice”
This man single handedly made a better script than a disney film

@@ahdog8except, that was an entirely different studio using Dreamworks' IP which explains the crappy animation.
Better example would be KFP 4.

Moana was already amazing and complete and they added a sequel to taint its legacy
My favorite part was when the villian was actually just 2024 summer blockbuster TWISTERS. Very meta.
With any hope Wicked beats the hell out of this at the box office and Disney isn’t tempted to do direct-to-video sequels again, but in theaters this time
