With Titles like 11 Fake Fees, to Don't Say I'm Paying Cash at Car dealerships, and Car Shortage Crisis, and Car Dealer Says Bring the Car Back!... The Homework Guy Team publishes videos to help Car Buyers. Then we added Cash Buyer Negotiations, and Held Hostage at a Car Dealership, No Haggle One Price Car Dealerships, How Much do Used Car Dealers Pay for Cars?, 10 Things You Should Not Say to Car dealerships, and the Costco Auto Program. We hit all the topics, and we represent Car Buyers, a goal that’s often in direct conflict with Car Dealer goals.
A CAR DEALER WANTS TO:
1. SELL every car for the Highest Possible Price.
2. CONVINCE Car Buyers to use Dealer affiliated Lenders / Banks.
3. LOAD every Car Deal full of Fees and Finance Products.
4. OFFER Lowball numbers on every Trade Vehicle.
THE HOMEWORK GUY TEAM (THG) HELPS CAR BUYERS TO:
1. BUY a Car from Dealers or Private Party Sellers at the Lowest Price.
2. PAY Cash or Finance with their own Bank or Credit Union.
3. DECLINE Dealer Fees and Finance Products.
4. TRADE / SELL their current vehicle for the Best Value.
For more than 40 years, dealerships have EARNED their lowly reputation by being the masters of predatory selling. Dealers stalk victims relentlessly, often ruthlessly treating the most vulnerable car buyers (like seniors, for example) with little or no conscience. Car Dealers and their Finance Officers have no problem creating financial devastation for their customers with over bloated car loans, and quite often do. We point out the traps and the flaws of the process, and help car buyers get by all the nonsense without being ripped off. We promote fairness, honesty, and transparency, and we’d love to see a few dealers join our mission!
The Homework Guy Team provides car buying consumers with information, automotive news and updates, industry outlook, buying and selling advice, and other help to level the tables. The public face of THG is Kevin Hunter and the master negotiator, Amazing Elizabeth. Tons of time and research goes into every show, with several projects always on the table, all with the goal of getting it exactly right. From Automotive News Updates to vehicle shopping advice and assistance, The Homework Guy Team is the best there is.

this ALMOST makes me want to buy a new car just so I can make some finance guy miserable
Lmao me too
Yes, please don't buy cars out of spite. That's a weird practice.
The Timberline I am looking at looks like someone did not know how to trim the ends and edges right. I am going to have them take it off and I will get a professional ceramic coating applied I think.
I feel angry. My wife and I was taken advantage of on our last car. Never again!
Thanks for the video, guys.
IMPORTANT ABOUT PAYING CASH: if the dealer says if you finance we can give waive the first month payment (e.g., in other words take off an additional $500 or so), take the financing AND THEN PAY OFF the car immediately. That is what I did. I bought 2020 MB GLE. They said take our financing and we will pay first month. I said ok. Then after they paid the first month, I paid off the car. So I got an extra $750 off. Seriously.
If they can afford to waive the first month it shows you what the kickback from the finance company must be.
Richard, you’re a Genius !!!
aren't the finance feed already calculated into price? (serious noob question)
As long as the contract doesn't stipulate an early payment penalty. Some financing firms will have such a penalty in a contract and not make you aware of it.
@@kakurerud7516 No! This seems to be a common misconception. The "finance fees" (interest) is the amount you pay ABOVE the base price - the percentage rate of the loan applied to your balance (whatever you owe on the vehicle) and multiplied by however many months you carry the loan. Your total monthly payment is the actual balance PLUS this calculated interest. This is the reason things cost more the longer you take to pay them off, and is one good reason to never tell salespeople that you're financing up front - so they can't offer you a price with the interest payments already "baked in".
Good job. The role plays are valuable and show how the customer can take charge. She was the “boss”
She was definitely the boss. When the finance man knows he has no wiggle room with a tough negotiator, they cave in pretty fast. They know who they can play games with, and who they can't. Women are some of the best negotiators out there!
@@KevinHunter you got that right. I did labor negotiations with nurses unions in Seattle and their president was a really tough cookie to deal with.
@@KevinHunter It's really funny when some sexist moron thinks, "Oh great! A woman! I'm really going to take this Sheila to the cleaners,".
Then the savvy consumer who has done her homework turns the tables.
Yeah... I do like the role playing part of these.
@@KevinHunter is the wotw ouwiwiiwiiwwwowiwiiwwwiiwtu
It would be really cool to see this whole process live at a real dealership.
It wouldnt work...they would ask you to leave
I think that'll my next video.

I was a sales rep for 20 plus years. Being honest was the only way. But the car guys are thieves. Proved to my now ex. We walked out when he stepped away to talk to the manager. They came running. I told them we don’t play with con artist and asked how was the game you talked about while pretending to help us?. Wife mad till I found a better deal and the same van. Which the first company said good luck as we are the only one that had it. I replied I don’t need 28 cup holders, I need a honest dealer. Found it and saved 7500$ be smart and learn.
Should have drove the van by the first dealer just to rub it in lol.
@@multimeter2859 lololol I hate games like this this is how the world works it nothing but games I wish I've know all of this before I enter the big bad world out there smh. THANKS FOR THE TIP
Wtf did you type.
Maybe just walk in to the dealer wearing a Homework guy shirt. Dealers beware!! Haaa thx Kevin.
Good idea.
You training works great in real life. I got a car in June 2020 for a used car place. The car sticker said $6000. I looked at 5 cars and we spent 1 1/2 hours going over them all. I was giving them the "Forest for the Tree" routine. Finally we got back, the 3rd time, to the car I wanted. "I'm not paying $6000 for this car." We argued for 20 minutes, then I told the car lady: "I will pay only $6000 for that car with all the Fees and Tax, license, everything. That's the only thing I'm paying and not a dollar more!" At the table the owner said: "Let me guess? You're paying CASH?" lol.
Did you pull out a wad of cash when he said that?
@@multimeter2859 LOL. Yes. But it was all $20's. I counted it in stacks of 10 each, then the car lady counted it, then the dealer owner counted it. That took 20 minutes. :)
"ADP"=Additional Dealer Profit; another fake dealer-added fee. And PRINT OUT your State's Doc Fee law, and help your salesperson by highlighting any language which says "this is not an official fee", or "this is not a required State fee", etc.
Where do you find your states doc fee law?
@@hoosierbengal163 You can go to your State's legislative website and search your State's laws by keyword, or check your State Attorney General's website for information under topics such as "Consumer Protection".
@@markh.6687 Thank you sir!
@@markh.6687 I still can’t find the info for Kentucky. Found a place for used cars. Nothing for new. Even searched it n both sites. Grrrrr
@@hoosierbengal163 I see what you mean; so far all I found for KY was a reference to docs fees allowed but not being capped, but not a statutory citation for that. Hmmm.
Having walked from a new Lincoln in Santa Monica because of upsell, I can tell you--there are few times I've ever felt more satisfied than when both the salesman and the general manager were running down the street begging for me to come back. I didn't. Why give these guys my business when the finance director was so willing to squander it in the first place? Bought another Lincoln at a place that wanted what I was willing to pay. Satisfaction. Made me love my car even more.
I did the same thing.. We know the dealer/Finance Mgr, will hold off as long as possible, hoping the buyer will cave.. and if they dont, like I did.. I started to get up and walk.. And like you, got to just outside the door, and they came after me. But, I didn't keep going. They said "Hold on, lets not let this deal slip away" I said "all I want to know, can you get me the car at the agreed upon price, with the fees we talked about taken off. Yes or no?" They hesitated for a second and said yes, even tried to make a little joke.. so I went back in and closed the deal. I didn't need to keep walking to make a point. At that juncture, there is no need for pride to come in. Im at the dealer, I got the price I wanted. Doesn't matter how we connected the dots to get there. So, they "get" my business.. even after all that, sure.
They played their hand, I played mine.... and got what I wanted. Why go to another dealer, go through it all again, to maybe get to the point I wanted to get to.
If you walk, and they chase, give them 2 seconds to agree... if not.. then keep on a trucking, and dont return. But if the end goal is the car you want at the price you want, and they finally agree, since your still there.. take it. Plus, you have the knowledge they caved to you. Might've taken a bit longer. But you come out with what you want
I have done that myself at the last minute by saying I am going to pay cash, but then they say, "to get this deal you have to finance with us". If it is a really great deal, I will say yes to financing through them, but when I get my first payment, I pay the car off. I have gotten anywhere from $8,000 to $37,000 off MSRP on a new car doing this.
Yeah me too l have been having same issues seen December 12 but once l was referred to longshub on instagram my problems solve thanks me later
I just wanted to thank you for your videos. We took your advice and went on a Monday, didn’t say anything about paying cash, and I told the sales guy that I liked the car I just didn’t like the price they were offering on it.😃 I said nothing about paying cash, but told him that if he could get it down to my budgeted amount, w all the taxes, doc fees, and it doesn’t go over my set price, then we could do business. We picked up our new vehicle yesterday! Thank’s again for all your honest to goodness help!❤️🎨🦅
Glad I watched your videos before heading to the dealership. Walking back from the test drive the salesman mentioned dealer adders and I laughed. He mentioned nitrogen and I said I better not see that. When he brought out the offer sheet it had over $6k in dealer adders, including $260 to do anti microbial on a brand new car. I struck them all out and said I was unwilling to pay for any of them. They never blinked and did not push back on any of them, with the exception of the $150 doc fee. I was okay with that if I saved $6k. Hate to think of how much I have paid in the past.
I want this lady to come with me when I buy my next car! 😃
She's amazing. One of the toughest negotiators on The Homework Guy Team. Nobody pulls anything over her eyes. Years ago when a bad snarky salesman realized he was totally outclassed and tried to get smart with her, she turned to him and said, "I'm not sure why you're still talking. Apparently you have me confused with someone who gives a shit about anything you have to say." BOOOOOMM!!! We have a T-Shirt in our merch store that has that quote on it now... lol.
Cannot thank you and your team enough!!! Finding your video series saved me a fortune on my recent vehicle. When I walked into the local AutoNation dealership they went straight down the line of every warning you listed on the Sales and Managers I met and then the offer had $400 wheel locks, $400 window tint, and $360 for doc fees. When I asked to have them removed they told me the wheel locks were already installed and part of the vehicle now. After the "Closer" walked into the office and started talking I thanked them for their time and walked out.
The dealership I ended up buying from got me a deal that was thousands lower and was zero pressure. I also used your advice buying my new RV where the finance office tried to add 4% to my APR they negotiated for me. Between the truck and the RV, your advice saved me over $15,000 in combined costs. You are truly performing an amazing public service!
Do you have any advice and insights on dealing with Fleet Managers for those of us with businesses?
#thehomeworkguy
Who thinks Kevin deserves an Oscar for that performance??
True story, I actually played "Oscar" in the Odd Couple years ago when I did theater. It was a blast. So, on that note, I guess I don't need the Oscar. I AM OSCAR...
My cars cost 500 dollars and last on average 10 months but I still watched this just to dream as if i can afford a new car
That's awesome! You know what you can afford, and you don't go out and commit financial suicide trying to buy more than your budget allows. Great respect!
@@KevinHunter as a self claimed car person it is kind of fun working on the shit boxes as well. I think even if i could afford it (hopefully in the future i can im just a broke student atm) i think id still buy used.
This is why I love this channel.. I love the role-play you play in the dealership and the lady playing the customer that is awesome.. the downside to this is most regular people don't have the intelligence to deal with the dealership like that and we get conned.. which is why most people are in debt with endless car payments today ..and I'm not hell yeah.😃
I like how in the first example she does a "mike drop" with the keys as she says she's paying cash
Awesome Kevin! I love the statement "You and I both know." "You know as well as I do" is a good one too.
You and I both know it's an awesome statement!
Great video, thanks.
One fee you did not mention and I see all the time PRE-PRINTED on every multi-copy sales form is a FUEL charge of around $69. When you sell me a car, I only need enough fuel to get me to the first gas station so why would anyone in their right mind pay it ?? At the dealership where I bought my last car, the dealer had the nerve to charge the fee and STILL didn’t put gas in the car. THAT is a 1st class slime ball !
Many dealerships receive a fuel allowance from the factory that pays for anywhere from a half to full tank. Nothing like not providing the fuel to the buyer to get a little more profit.
Going to the used dealership now. Fingers crossed I can be like that lady!
how did it go?
I discovered this channel Friday night, the day before I was supposed to go shopping to replace my stolen car. This video literally just saved me $1,200 on a Toyota Corolla.
That's awesome!
Many dealers already have the DOC fee pre-printed onto the sales contract form. My solution to this is to insist they reduce the price of the car by an amount equal to what I feel is an overcharge. For example, I'm willing to pay a $99 DOC fee. If the sales contract shows $499 on the DOC fee line I make them take $400 off the previously negotiated price of the car.
Printing it on the contract gives that "Permanent" stamp to it, and makes buyers question it less. That doesn't mean you have to pay it. Subtract it from your final price to correct the excessive charge. That's what we did in this role play. The fee still shows up on the contract, but the price was reduced accordingly.
"DOC fees" are now $700-800 around here (No.ALA) . its ridiculous.
The demonstration was superb please have these more tutorials in real example
Thanks
LMAO did you really have to use the mask. Too funny!
When I buy my used vehicle they each last me 10-12 years each.. but even longer a lot longer.. like my van I live at of right now is a E350 I-95 172000 miles runs excellent and I only paid $3,000 for it three years ago.. now that's what I'm talking about no debt no payment plan no nothing which means I keep a lot more money in my pocket.. hell yeah.😃
The 2 dislikes must be car dealers
No those are the guys complaining about Kevins eys moving while reading his lines, I never notice as I am too busy listening to the great advice and taking notes.
the role play has me thinking -- that whole "exhaustion = caving" goes both ways: i will take *ALL* of their time, and make it mine to use against them.
I'm trying to do my homework, so we don't get stuck paying thousands on what we don't need. Yet, my bf doesn't even hear me out. All I want to do is be smart and educated us. But he thinks he knows it all 🤦🏻♀️, so I want to see how this deal plays out when we go to the dealership. Thank you for you knowledgeable information 🤗.
It’s always best to visit the dealerships at the end or near the end of the month, they don’t fight as much lol
Daaaaang!!! Now imagine buyers wearing body cams and doing it for reals lol
after all was said and done, I was able to beat the price back by 25%, from the $35,000 msrp this 25% discount was after inclusion of a store discount + rebate + dealer fee all factored in incl TT&L
I’m looking for a car, & there was 2 fees that stood out, $500 dealer fees, $500 foe government fees, I told them I was not interested & hung up.
I really appreciate the Role Playing. I understand all of your videos academically, but I struggle with the application of the knowledge. Since my wife and I are having a child any day now, we have been looking into getting an additional vehicle that isn't a high mileage "start and pray". These role plays are very helpful in taking the knowledge you give and learning how to make the rubber meet the road. Thank you again for all you do, and it is greatly appreciated.
I wish we could have actual hidden camera car buying or maybe re enactments any many different types of salesmens just to get used to them
"have you ever heard of any legislature passing a law mandating profits for any form of business?"
Yes, look at health insurance lol.
Nope, not even government-run business, The postal service for one, Amtrack for another, net negative and kept going with public taxes.
I guess my question would be; at what amount, off the MSRP would you start negotiations? 2k-3k off sticker?
You guys are giving me the confidence I need after getting screwed on my last car buy. Thanks
*The role play is a pretty good simulation of Lou Fusz Subaru, and Lou Fusz Nissan, and Lou Fusz Saturn (R.I.P.) [all in Saint Louis Missouri, and they have each managed to sell me at least three new cars since 1985] !*
Man went b picked up a used truck found a dealer who was upfront and honest which is new thanks to ur advice I walked away from two not so honest dealers
That's exactly what you do with dishonest dealers. Walk away and make them pay with disappointment and a steadily shrinking number of customers to wait on.
I got a manager to show me the itemized fees. I noticed the sales tax was very high. I told him the tax fee was extremely high when that city's fee was 10 percent so I ask him why. He said because they have to charge tax based on msrp not the price I was paying, and that was a common practice. I've bought several cars from dealerships and never paid taxes based on msrp. Eventually I had to walk out, not even for this reason but they didn't want to remove the extra "accessories" that I didn't need. I just decided they were playing too many games and left.
Say I’m paying cash….What if the first question, after sitting down in the finance office is, “So are you paying cash or will you be financing, today?
Just say youre financing and let them review and write shit down. and then just before signing, say “I changed my mind, I want to pay cash.” If they refuse just leave.
@@Fume1337 problemo 2. I paid up front for a 3 yr/36K mile lease. I only used 11,900 miles. Lease is due in a month. I’m behind- as usual. What pisses me off is when trying to get the current price on the car from Edmunds or KBB, it asks if it’s ever been in an accident. Some man hit my car in my condo parking spot while I was parked legally and wasn’t even in the car. So, yah, technically I was in an accident, but do I have to answer YES? That hardly seems fair and it’s going to bring the cost of my car down. Can you help me again? Thx so much!
MSUSPARTANS 1995 I’m so sorry that happened. Thats very unfortunate wow. Just compare the two prices. One with the car accident and One without. If the prices are outrageously different I would just go with the One without the accident because thats unfair.
@@Fume1337 You and I would be good friends! Thx so much!
Im scared shitless to do this at the used car dealership but im willing to do it. Thanks and wish me luck.
Great channel!!!
Nice, amazing how some dealers will turn a deal away if some of these ridiculous fees
Great advice
I’m in the process of buying a new car right now, so far I’ve visited three dealers, from the first one I left as soon as salesman and sales manager teamed out playing the “shame on you” game, the second one played a confusing game making me believe I was seeing an Allison but ended up with an Allan (🤔) who assured me that by no means I could negotiate the price of the car, then I left leaving clear the price I was willing to pay to what he laughed at and said that would never happened just to txt and call me two days later trying to meet me half way the price, with the third one I’m still negotiating all the dealer adding that I don’t need/want. It’s a tough game but these channel is clearing my mind and guiding me through the process.

Great advice, will do on my next car purchase for sure !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love it !
I love the role play keep them coming .
In my experience they typically ask early on "Are you paying cash or financing?", like when you're still with sales just looking at cars. Suggestions for answering that (preferably without outright lying)?
"I'm not going to talk about finances until we've determined if you have the car I want for a price I'm happy with." Then wait until you have a price IN WRITING in your hand and you are in the finance office with it. That's the point where this role play starts off.
Great role playing Kevin. Please make more videos.
Great Video... Thanks!
Glad you liked it!
Awesome I love the role play.
Kevin, you are awesome! Thanks for sharing your experience and exposing these slimeball dealer fees.
Manufactures & their franchise dealerships purposely have a lot of moving parts to a deal like you can or can't get this rebate $$ with this finance rate, or you can with these other numbers etc.., like a shell game on the street, in hopes you take your eye off of the shell with the ball under it, its all meant to confuse and benefit the Manufacturer and dealership
Thank you for the role playing... so much easier to learn from!
U the man kevin!!
