  • CAR DEALER DOC FEES ARE BY FAR THE MOST COMMON RIP OFF at Car Dealerships all across the country. Dealerships have been sticking it to buyers with Dealer FEES of all kinds, but especially Document FEES. They love them, but they don't deserve to be paid. Find out why!

The Homework Guy Team publishes videos to help Car Buyers. We don’t hate Car Dealerships. Instead, we represent Car Buyers, a goal that’s often in direct conflict with Car Dealer goals.
    A CAR DEALER WANTS TO:
    1. SELL every car for the Highest Possible Price.
    2. CONVINCE Car Buyers to use Dealer affiliated Lenders / Banks.
    3. LOAD every Car Deal full of Fees and Finance Products.
    4. OFFER Lowball numbers on every Trade Vehicle.
THE HOMEWORK GUY TEAM (THG) HELPS CAR BUYERS TO:
    1. BUY a Car from Dealers or Private Party Sellers at the Lowest Price.
    2. PAY Cash or Finance with their own Bank or Credit Union.
    3. DECLINE Dealer Fees and Finance Products.
    4. TRADE / SELL their current vehicle for the Best Value.
THG didn’t give Car Dealers their Bad Reputation. For more than 40 years, dealerships have EARNED it by being the masters of predatory selling. They stalk victims relentlessly, often ruthlessly treating the most vulnerable car buyers (like seniors, for example) with little or no conscience. Car Dealers and their Finance Officers have no problem creating financial devastation for their customers with over bloated car loans, and often do. While the business has had record setting profits, Dealers never stop telling Car Buyers “We’re losing money!” That’s the bed Car Dealers custom built for themselves. We point out the traps and the flaws of the process, and help car buyers get by all the nonsense without being ripped off. We promote fairness, honesty, and transparency, and we’d love to see a few dealers join our mission!
The Homework Guy Team provides car buying consumers with information, automotive news and updates, industry outlook, buying and selling advice, and other help to level the tables. The public face of THG is Kevin Hunter and the master negotiator, Elizabeth. #Censored COUNT YOURSELF FORTUNATE... if you are seeing this video. RUclips censored it shortly after it went up. It posted at 5am PST. By 8am, the hourly views fell to 65, then 40, now just 10. Clearly the Auto Dealers Associations wanted it gone, and RUclips did their bidding. This is the NUMBER ONE ABUSED FEE in Dealerships all across the country, and RUclips is preventing people from seeing it. Disgusting. It's hard to imagine what's become of the America we live in anymore. At this point, the only way the masses will see this content is by YOU sharing it, helping to get the message out. #thehomeworkguy

Just used this technique last week on a truck purchase. When finalizing my deal (after agreeing upon a sale price) they bust out a $649 doc fee on the contract. Told them there was no way I was ever paying that so they explained that it had been a company policy for a few years now and was mandatory by law - even the owners kids would have to pay it they said! So I told them fine, I will pay it, but then you need to lower the price of the truck by $649. They said that was impossible. So I told them I would be leaving and if they changed their mind to call me. I drove less than 1 block when they called with the lowered truck price.

Two years ago this happened to me. Note that I was savvy to this since I have bought many cars over the years. I had my salesman and the Sales Manager who was attempting to close the deal. It came down to the 500 doc fee. He said no he would not budge and I said you would lose a sale over your inflated Doc fee? He said, yes. I then looked over at the salesman and he had a face on him that would have launched a ship. That SM just blew his deal over a pure profit puff piece. I got up, shaked the Salesman's hand and said thank you and good-bye. They never called me back but I moved on an bought another car. So, know your numbers. Don't fold and be ready to walk out. Be courteous but like the Godfather said, "it's not personal, just business."

Here in Illinois, the doc fee is actually regulated by the state by those "laws" you talked about. The current regulation is $300. However almost no one here will discount the fee. Dealers will send customers walking (including mine) if you don't pay it. If anyone charges MORE than $300, THEN they are taking advantage of the customer. It's crazy.

Hi Kevin today 11/24/2020 I was at my dealer to buyout my lease. All was going well, I refused to pay any more the the residual cost plus tax. They had all type of fee which I insisted be removed. After a period of time they removed them. But, when we got to the Government fee as well as the document fees they would not remove then, they would not negotiate this fees. So I did what you recommended I got up and walked away from the deal. Gov fee was 143.00 and the Doc fee 389.00. They had all the reasons why they had too charge the fees, I really think they watch your videos. I will go to any other KIA dealer and try again.

I tried to buy a 2020 Chevy truck from dealership in Texas on June 1st, 2020. The sales manager/owner refused the deal due to the doc fee and the VIT (vehicle inventory tax) that I wouldn’t pay, $225. He said it was required by law for me to pay. I said to reduce the price of the truck $225 and we have a deal. The sales manager/owner refused. The sales person called two days later and explained it wasn’t necessarily a law to charge these fees, but it was company policy throughout all of the company’s dealerships. I also asked another dealership to show me the law requiring me to pay these fees, I have yet to receive a response. I asked the TxDMV office about the law, their lawyers responded they never heard of it. They said they would research this and get back to me. No response as of yet. In the mean time, no new truck.

I was out looking at new vehicles just before Memorial Day. I asked for a price breakdown on a new Jeep I was interested. Sure enough $300 doc fee for a Maryland vehicle just as you stated. Breakdown was a joke in its brevity and was missing about $1900 in factory incentives good until Memorial Day but they said expired that day (Saturday before Memorial Day). When challenged I got the BS answer that they never see someone come in to buy on the Sunday before Memorial Day or Memorial Day. Walked away chuckling to myself.

I went to about 15 dealers. All had doc fees of 500-600. NONE would budge on them at all. All also said everyone has to pay it as its dealer policy. They claim they cant let one person pay and one not or they could be sued with class action lawsuit. I went with the dealer that gave me best price out the door which was 1,300 lower than next guy even paying the 600 doc fee.
Just bought a 2020 Honda Odyssey EX. Out the door price was $34,056. 599 doc, 401 dmv, 7.50 tire fee. Out the door price is only price that matters. I think I got a pretty good deal even with the doc fees.

Had a dealer in NJ come in $475 lower in the OTD price of a dealer in NY in spite of the $699 doc fee (vs. $75 in NY).
I don't mind the high doc fee if it's disclosed up front because I don't care what the makeup of the final price is. I just care about what money I need to pay; however the dealership wants to classify it does not matter.

I had data from a Minnesota dealership that charged the $75. I also had the wages and duties of the girl who handled all the paperwork for sold cars. She did a lot more than title transfers and requests for plates, so I determined the portion of work related to the car transaction, and used that percentage of her work to "justify" the $75 fee they collected. At the end of the year, the dealership pocketed an additional $225,000 by collecting the fee, after paying Anna to do the work. That was on a $75 fee. Can you imagine what the number is if the dealer collected $899? A few million bucks!

Factory shipments have dried up, presumably due to COVID and production interruption, factory workforce cutbacks etc. Specifically, I asked him if prices have budged to the downside . "Not a bit", he said. He admitted though that once cars on his lot get sold, their inventory is gone and he will no longer be selling cars -next month was his timeframe, I guess at the current burn vs resupply rate.

Since clearly you got a chance to see this video, please share with me how you found it. Here's why I ask. Right after this video posted, it disappeared on RUclips. Buried from notifications, gone from my own searches. I'm quite sure the Auto Dealers Association asked RUclips to censor it, and they did. Obviously, it's not information they want out there. So, I'm curious how you found it. I've never seen this happen to a video I've produced before

document fees for my brother's rental car company were 50 bucks a car to the local dealer, even though they bought direct from the factory by the truckload. That was years ago, probably gone up by now like everything else, but still shouldn't be all that much. I'd say if you can't get it done for 100 or less, walk and buy elsewhere.

I use what I call the 10 minute method. Tell the salesman what you will pay for the car, and when they ask you to sit in their little cubical with the uncomfortable chairs, tell them you are not sitting anywhere and you have 10 minutes to make this happen or I am down the road.
Tell the finance man the same thing. They can write a car deal up in less than 10 minutes, especially if you have your own pre approved finance.

It's not really a 'fake' free from what I know. There is paperwork that is legally required for them to file. However, since each state regulates their own and some even have no max, most of the time the fees are ridiculous. California is the only one that I know of who has a reasonable doc fee - $80. Each state should have the same mandate in place. IMO

They are obsessed with this fee I am really confused by it. I paid for the doc fee but because like, it was $600 and when finalizing everything I said I wanted that off, we agreed no hidden fees. So they took an extra $600 off the car even after I had gotten them to take $1,000 off. I just said fuck it cause I didn't wanna think about how we JUST spent hours getting that $1,000 taken off and then all of a sudden on whim they take off $600 more just to keep the doc fee on. I didn't understand why it was so important to them that it OFFICIALLY be on there. Like it was the law or something (FYI I'm not a moron I know it wasn't the law I'm just saying that's what it felt like) They never said they couldn't take it off it was just how much they were ok to compensate for it like it WAS taken off but not really. I mean I wasn't too mad about it, made the taxes less too but man ..I was confused why it was soooo important that that stay on under any circumstances

Kevin - I think I have an order in to Toyota for a Tacoma of my liking. Initially the dealer (TBA) said they couldn't get what I wanted, but could come close. I put down $500 & signed a deal based on something close, but expressed my expectation that they would get what I wanted. Subsequent to that, I sent letters (NOT emails) to various Toyota USA VPs of sales and the division president expressing my disappointment with the fact that I could build what I want on their web site, but that the dealer couldn't come anywhere close with the same options. Since then my conversation with the corporate level regional manager has obtained a (currently verbal) commitment that they would "special" order my Tacoma, but I would not likely see it until November 2020. I'm okay with that as long as it's equipped as I want.
While I've put $500 at risk here, I don't feel that any papers I've signed are valid and will have to be rewritten once this truck is on the way to CT. I have listened/watched almost all of your RUclips posts and now realize what I've given up with this dealer that I have been with for over 4 decades and multiple Toyotas. When (or if) this Tacoma does actually get built, I'm expecting to have some interesting conversations with the dealership. I expect that initially they will try to hold at the MSRP according to the window sticker because it's a "special" order. My position will be that they did NOTHING to help me get what I wanted in Tacoma packages and options - I basically did all of the leg work that they could have done to satisfy a loyal Toyota customer, and I will be expecting to pay something close to invoice price - REAL invoice price. Further, I will be expecting a loyalty reward as well, as well as some bonus options to sweeten the deal.
I will update this as the time gets closer. My conversation with the regional sales manager this morning was intended to nudge him to providing a FIRM written commitment that this Tacoma will indeed get into the factory's production schedule. Once that occurs I feel I'll be in a better position to pin down the dealership on the final numbers. Obviously this vehicle will be financed (MSRP is close to $42K) and I intend to keep my options open as to HOW it will be financed. My local bank is around 4%+ on a 48 month auto loan. My credit union is at 2.49%. I will have that information in my pocket when that dreaded conversation with the finance person happens. Actually, after watching your videos, I'm looking forward to the fun.

I went with my brother-in-law to look at a used car he was interested in. The advertised price was right and he went into the office to complete the purchase. When they brought out the contract, it was $2000 more than advertised. They told him that the advertised price included a $1000 loyalty discount that he did not qualify for and that by law they must charge every car buyer a $1000 dealer fee. We ran the numbers of what he was willing to pay, made an out-the-door offer, and they declined, telling him that their price was not negotiable. So we left. A few days later the salesman called him and told him they were willing to work with him. They came to an agreement for a out-the-door price about $500 over his rejected offer. They exchanged emails with the final price and he made financing arrangements to complete the purchase that Friday. He got to the dealer all ready to purchase the car and the sales manager told him that the salesman was not authorized to sell it at that price so the email didn't mean anything. He walked out, never to return.

MAN! Where were you 4 yrs ago!? LOL I got a car in AZ so I probably spend $425 on fees! HAHAHA Now I live in CA and AZ was the only place within 500 miles I could find the car I wanted, used, with the mileage I was OK with for the price I could live with. I thought I would was saving roughly 6k doing the drive. With their fees and the $600+ to transfer to CA DMV, that brought me down to only saving 5k. I got duped into 2k for additional warranty coverage too. I need to get a couple things fixed so maybe I'll only really eat $1500 on a warranty I didn't need, fingers crossed I get some benefit from the needless warranty! LOL
