  • After my video cutting the coil springs on two of my cars, I had some opposing opinions on the performance aspect of them. After agreeing to take it autocrossing and test them, here we are.

    Honestly my favorite part about my Spec Vs is when exiting a corner the rear wants to step out and in a FWD you can correct oversteer by applying throttle and basically pulling your way out of the slide, thus I can get to full throttle a bit earlier in the corners, accelerating sooner while also correcting the oversteer, it was quite a fun experience on track.

    • @HatersGarage
      @HatersGarage  5 месяцев назад +4

      It's fun, the issue I have is it wants to spin all the way around. Yes you can mash the throttle to straighten it, but you lose speed when you do that unless it's barely sideways. Sliding can be faster if you can get it into slip angle, I did it a couple times in my run when I straightened the wheel during a turn

    • @HardAngle
      @HardAngle 5 месяцев назад +2

      @@HatersGarage Ah okay, I see, usually mine only comes out just enough you know you're sliding but half throttle will maintain it and full throttle pulls it straight, I am still on stock springs too that are uncut so the behavior could be explained by that possibly.

    • @HatersGarage
      @HatersGarage  5 месяцев назад +3

      @@HardAngle It behaved the same way before the cut springs too, there's just no weight in the rear so the rear tires just skid along with no resistance.

    • @HardAngle
      @HardAngle 5 месяцев назад +3

      @@HatersGarage They sure do have the weight distribution of a truck lol. I guess on track there is enough speed it doesn't want to rotate going 40-60 on certain corners. I have never participated in an autocross event, so maybe on some slower tighter corners I will find mine wants to do the same thing, I guess I'll have to seek out an autocross this year for research purposes.

    my autox car is a rustbucket 84 celica, which is currently on cut foxbody springs to make them fit. It was those for a few bucks at a junkyard OR a custom coilover setup.
    They are great! People dont like janky, but those same people usually dont actually drive their car or work on it themselves, just bitch in forums.

    Half the springs, double the N/mm :) you change the balance between oversteer and understeer of the car, but the radius of the GG diagram stays the roughly the same ˆˆ. Thats why you feel a better behavior in some parts of the track, but grip will only increase with better tires, as you said

    After cutting some stiffer springs down that were too long I can second that cutting works fine 👍 but if you go too much lower than stock, you can run into axle troubles - ideally you want stiffer with the same ride height unless you're willing to go to smaller dia tires - in my case, I went stiffer, but the new springs were OE length, thus ride height was 1" too high - testing out destroyed my inner CV joints in no time - cutting solved my issues

    If you understand what you are doing that is...
    If you cut too much, you can mess up the geometry and make a car actually roll even more. Also cutting not only makes the spring shorter but also harder. So if the absorbers are already worn out, you can end up with even worse grip on rougher road than before.
    But other times, if for example you remove some weigh from your car, and only need to compensate for 1 - 2 cm, cutting half a wind would not hurt anything.

    I would think the only real critical problem you could have cutting your springs to a size that still. functions. Would be to use like an acetylene torch or something that would heat the metal enough for it to lose temper and become brittle. Then it would go and do a snappy-doo. Like the factory springs on the old lady's Dodge Caliber. Could see the chunky metal crystal structure in the bit that bounced across the parking lot. BAD HEAT TREAT. BAD MOPAR. NO COOKIE.

    Nice. Also, given that it's a fwd car and they need all the help they can get for forward bite, 62/38 isn't that bad. From al the reading I've done and theory and whatnot, really anything between 60/40 and 40/60 is usable and can be made to work well.
    Besides, what's the W/D like on top end FWDs like the type R, anyway? 58/42? I'm willing to bet it's not as far off of your Sentra as you might think.

      The weight distribution isn't the end of the world, however you can definitely tell it's nose heavy when driving it. I think better tires would fix most if not all of my complaints with the handling, just buying some is the thing...

    Curious why most people don’t like front heavy front wheel drive cars? More weight in the front would offer better launching traction and result in more rotation around corners similar to rwd/awd? I guess some problems are needing strong front brakes, or maybe it feels worse to drive than a more balanced car. My eclipse has the exact same weight distribution as your Sentra haha.

    • @HatersGarage
      @HatersGarage  5 месяцев назад +4

      The launching traction isn't much good unless you're drag racing. It is easy to rotate, the issue is it wants to continue rotating all the way around due to the imbalance.

    • @thedarkgreenvanman
      @thedarkgreenvanman 5 месяцев назад +2

      FWD has next to no traction when you launch. All the weight shifts to the back basically lifting your tires off the ground (figuratively not literally) then when you accelerate when exiting a corner your front tires not only need to steer but pull. I’ve driven FWD most my life but still prefer RWD

    I'm not hating on the cut springs. If it works it works. The issue is that cutting springs tends to give a very high spring rate (just due to the nature of how spring rate works). This could be why the car still feels unbalanced. It probably is under-damped for this reason.
    Get you some sticky tires and see how it does though 🤷
