Back in the mid-90's we didn't cut our springs... We simply removed the springs entirely. And yes, we still made it over speed bumps though it took some skill... LOL
We have a 1985 Mercedes 300d turbo diesel that my brother bought for only $800. He cut 3-4 cools off of his springs, and he has been daily driving it for about 2 years. He's never had issues with it coming out of place, although speed bumps are too tall to go over speed bumps fast, but that goes for any lowered car.
This should be a series. Can you daily drive a car with: straight cut gears? racing seats and harnesses? A roll cage? Stripped interior? Just a thought because you've done a video like this with welded differentials.
Exactly! Ricers over here keep repeating the sentence "ChoraBoy", something like "Cry, Boy". I don't know why. They just ruin their cars cutting the springs. That's why I bought proper Eibach springs to install in my Volkswagen Saveiro Cross. #PAUNASCABRITA
I've been Dailying a car with Cut Springs for a while now it's literally no different I have zero problems but if anything probably handles a little better cause I've lowered the center of gravity now and whatever the quarter pound weight reduction it's still rides smooth I haven't had any issues with them popping out and I drive the car hard and through awful bumpy city streets all the time
does weight reduction mean more MPGs?? next you should test that by removing everything like rear seats, passenger seat, radio, interior, doors, trunk, bumpers, fenders...
I've had two of these CG Accords. First one was a 1.8 litre manual lift back, and years and a couple of cars later a 2.0 litre automatic sedan. Still regret that I sold the 2.0. What a great and reliable car.
I was surprised to see that you removed the springs to cut them. I guess the kind of person who would cut their springs would not bother to remove them and cut them right on the car. Or more likely they would heat the springs rather than cutting them. I would like to see a video about heated springs.
I done this to a pickup also flipped the rear axle from under to over the leaf springs. It works and well. Just make sure you put a U bold on whats left of your spring to the shock. Done a friends truck like this also. Sold mine and the guy loved it. Hope he never takes the front wheels off.
Why add all the pretend reactions to a "rough" ride? There's no way you noticed a major difference. OEM springs with one coil gone are still likely around 1/2 as stiff as proper lowering springs. So lowering springs will only make the ride even worse. It's ok to just tell people cut springs aren't that safe and leave it a that...
4:52 Spring rate does not increase. It remains contstant unless you change to stiffer springs. What has changed is the suspension can no longer withstand as much load

Lol I daily my volvo 940 with cut springs. Sure it's a tad bit bumpier, but meh. Gave the front coils a small weld for them to stay in place. Back coils are kept in place with a pipe clamp. Lowered springs doesn't lower it enough, basically. Would I go lower than I have right now, I might consider cutting lowering springs.
Really, I owned a heavy Merc 190E with a broken and two worn springs for over a year. The only problem I had was over large road bumps but no dangerous moments at all. But when it came to MOT day they quoted me over £1000 for full replacement of them plus the test. That was over 10 years ago and I couldn't be arsed to bother and scrapped it though it still drove smoothly like you would never of known otherwise. God I still miss that car and even my brand new car today can never beat that classic beautiful workhorse.
I used to ride with cut springs in 2 different cars for more than 1 year and i loved it! Don'te recomend, but you wont die deppending on the car you cut
This guy I knew back in high school cut the springs in his car, and I can remember the way that car would bounce constantly on a flat and straight segment of highway. Really bad idea lol
well.. you cut them wrong. Youre supposed to cut the top springs. ( and take them off the struts). i cut my nc miata springs i daily the shit out of it the spring never popped out. Plus after you cut the spring you have to flaten the spring the best you possibly can
An exception, vintage Mercedes springs were made to be cut. They've got about 14 coils, they're compressed in their mounts by at least 6-7 inches and they're woefully undersprung from from the factory and the increase in rates is great. You need a special compressor to get them out without exploding your skull and that's a $100 tool. Spend the remaining $100 on beer and pizza and spend some quality time with your angle grinder, just make sure to keep the springs cool or they'll lose their temper. I dropped my '79 300sd by about 3 inches to a roughly 1 finger fender gap and it's one of my favorite mods on that car of which there are many. The only ones that top it are the manual transmission swap, my hood exhaust and the 17" monoblock reps I put on there. Unfortunately it has rust worse than Phil so I'm gonna pull all my fun parts and then scrap it and look for another chassis.
How ironic, asking if people would have sex with a plastic bag. The type of people irresponsible enough to do so are exactly the type of people who would cut their springs (and clearly, cutting springs is a common enough thing to make a video about it).

I had a friend in college that had been lowered, it was a full size Chevy Impala convertable, it would drag on even the lowest speed bump, what a pain in the arse!
Gatis Girdenis lowering springs are the same height as a stock spring uncompressed. The difference is that they have a progressive spring rate, which means part of the spring is softer than stock, and the rest is stiffer than stock. So when you put the car back on the ground, the softer part compresses more, thus lowering your car.
hey, use a ratchet tied from driver to passenger control arm and tighten it until the strut assembly has enough room to work with, itll keep you from loosing any fingers or someone getting their head crushed, it also makes the entire process incredibly easier; just jack it up, take the wheels off, ratchet the control arms and you have easy access, and yes that works with an anti-roll bar, and solves the issue for both sides simultaneously
Dark ShadowFox yeah dude i see trucks lifted 12"+ with 16" wide wheels and 45" tires, pro street drag cars that are as loud as a v8 could possibly get, unweighted wheels, straight pipes are legal and almost all shops will do them without question, we dont need emissions controls, we also can drive on semislicks with literally only one line of tread. hell even semi trucks can have two trailers haha. honestly car heaven
Depends on the type of coil your cutting. If you car came with progressive springs you can not cut them, if you do you will change the spring rate and the car will bounce. But if the car came with traditional style spring you will not change the spring rate as drastic and the car will drive fine. The only issue is most times the damper will start to bottom out and blow it's seals.
I've done cut springs on several cars. Honestly not much different than lowering springs. Just depends how low you go really! The lower the worse the ride in either case.
If you do cut springs, cut from the top not the bottom. I cut mine on my ek and it drove good, you can only notice when you go over speed bump that the shocks bottom out. Other than that, it was good. Corner hard, drive fast and felt good. I wouldn't doubt that your shocks will go out sooner than if you were on proper springs though.

I'm not from the UK. Can someone translate this for me?
It seems to be more dangerous
From the UK and nah mate we don’t say things like crashy... I think he means it feels more boaty - meaning it feels wobbly and loose
Crashy means more rough when going over bumps in the road
It seems like something my great-grandmother would say to her mechanic, as he pulls his hair out trying to understand the symptoms of her car. It's nonsense talk.
Great Video! 👌 😀
