"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on RUclips. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on RUclips, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode. “That Raytheon decided they don’t hate gays or trans people - frankly, I don’t really give a shit what their take on that is..."

That was one of the stupidest comments in the entire argument. He is literally arguing for an oligarchy-like system that is completely against a meritocracy. He is arguing that if you have more money, you deserve a *bigger* voice which means millionaires will have the ability to dictate the rules. He literally is going against one person - one vote. I am beyond shocked that this was said; they thought this was a good point.

@@coreymunroe8073 success in most any business or platform is basically 2 parts effort, 3 parts luck. Fitness is equal parts effort and discipline. As you said, not comparable. Fitness doesn't even require anything but yourself, youtube requires at least a way to record and an internet connection.
Honestly I wish I had better work ethic. When I see friends that are doing better than me I'm fully aware that it's because they put in more hours a week then I do. Also there's nothing wrong with the message of investing your money instead of blowing it on nice things, it's not a conservative or right wing message it's just financial sense

If I'm following correctly, these guys don't actually have political opinions, just personal bro advice that doesn't even try to be scalable to a societal level whatsoever. Then you tell everyone that anyone can do it and that if you can't you're just lazy. As someone who is on the left and already watched this on PDB, Kyle absolutely smashed it. Their arguments are predicated exclusively on individualistic oriented “logic”, entirely neglecting the macro picture. They also illustrate points using convoluted and incomplete faux anecdotes. Although you don’t really engage their points in a debate bro way very directly, the way you substantiate your arguments are infinitely superior to how they form theirs.

PDB guys made a couple of decent points. For example, one of the PDB guys pushed back against Kyle on government spending. Majority of the government spending goes towards Medicare and social security and cutting the military budget in half won’t do much if your trying to reduce government spending.

Walmart is the nation's largest employer. Their employees are from small towns where, because of Walmart, the majority of small businesses that used to employ people for higher wages and much better working conditions, went out of business because Walmart has monopoly pricing power. It's a small town. People who work at Walmart are there because of the enforcement of poverty, not by choice.

It's such a blatant denial of easily demonstrable reality. The most successful businesses in this nation are the ones that have been the most abusive to their workers and communities. It is incredibly hard for non-abusive businesses to compete with abusive businesses, because the non-abusive ones tend to be more expensive to purchase from, and consumers tend to want the lowest price.

This particular breed of conservative is rather interesting. He obviously came from nothing, from humble beginnings. That's why it's impossible for self-made successful people like him to admit the simple fact that the current system is NOT a meritocracy. because if he admits the obvious, then his own success story becomes less impressive. He wants to have beaten a fair and balanced system, not an unfair luck-based system. His success story is the biggest aspect of his identity and so he's gonna cling to the idea that his hardwork was the decisive factor in his success. Whereas, the reality is that pure luck was the decisive factor in his success. There are thousands of people who work way harder than this guy, are way smarter than this guy but are nowhere near as successful as him. Which means that the system is NOT fair and balanced. And he can't stand this simple fact.
Successful people desperately WANT and NEED to believe that we live in a meritocracy. And if we already live in a meritocracy, then why try to fix something that ain't broken? So they become conservatives
There's a famous experiment that was done by psychologists at the University of California, Irvine, where pairs of strangers played a rigged Monopoly game. At the beginning of the game, a coin flip decided which player would be "rich" and which would be "poor". The rich player received 3 great advantages: they received twice as much money at the start of the game, they collected $200 when passing "Go" (twice as much as the poor player), and on each turn they could roll two dice instead of one which allowed them to progress around the board twice as fast. As the games progressed and the "rich" players dominated the games, they began to rudely gloat. Instead of being polite -- _and showing they're in touch with reality_ -- by pointing to the great advantages they received as the explanation for their success, they'd talk about how great they are at board games and make other obnoxious comments. Quite an interesting experiment. IIRC there wasn't even _one_ "rich" player in the experiment who didn't become annoying.
He can make the case “Oh some occupations are a meritocracy!” But for the system as a whole be viewer as an accurate meritocracy?! Oh not even close…

Keynesianism which some refer to as social democracy actually keeps the capitalist / single owner in control of the means of production. Norway has tons of worker cooperatives so it’s socialism and capitalism competing in the free market. The true definition of socialism contradicts the concept that capitalism is the free market because capitalism manipulates the labor market in a way that benefits the owners and socialism corrects the labor market lol

@@professional.commentator I watched this on the other channel a few days ago. He says something to the effect of people should have to earn the right to vote somewhere around a hour in I think? He really needs a history lesson as it's not as if that's a unique idea, even in American history. Perhaps the two most understandable examples being that you needed to be a landowning white male at the start of the country to have any political voice and black people were specifically given unfair competency or literacy tests and unfair laws, called the Black Codes, to prevent them from having a voice politically even when they were supposed to be free. Knowing Better has a good video on that history titled Neoslavery for those that would like to learn about that experience a bit better.
The man on the far left needs an even more serious lesson in history. Either American history or the history of democracy in general as both are a struggle for the same ends. Maybe it's more accurate to say both of these guys are just grifter hustle culture figure heads though with minimal critical thinking beyond talking points to support that narrative? The man on the left is worse in doing that spiel either way.
They'd be on the right at the National Assembly supporting aristocracy over democracy centuries ago. They likely wouldn't survive the French Revolution. It's rather remarkable that populism as it exists today is basically the opposite as it was then where these men have nothing to fear for basically advocating for the inequality of power to compound indefinitely. Back then you had to dog whistle for aristocracy to have power through economic means, which was called conservatism at that time too to be clear. These guys don't have to jump through any hoops basically. This trajectory is so accepted the most rabid populists are marketed to blame culture war talking points towards trans people or immigrants for things instead.

Kyle is naive. He believes that people have the right to things because they breathe, and they have the right to these things because they work hard and they mean well. The guy literally said "That's not how life works" when Kyle said people should be afforded some leisure time if they work a full time job and not have to worry about how they will be able to survive and put food on the table. Absolutely incredible. These two guys are so conditioned by the system, they cannot even entertain a thought outside of those beliefs. Why do u have to define worry about food survival for everyone? Does that mean full time job entitled to have more resources to go travel, dine out, spend on dates? Look at Europe, taxes as heavy as 60%, no invention, no thriving market, just plain old regulation, old boys network club with no mobility. That’s your trade off to leech on efforts of others.

Great interview Kyle! The difference between your interview and David pakman’s shows why I enjoy your conversations so much. You don’t come off as a know it all (although you probably do know it all lol) and your opinions are well thought out and communicated without disparaging someone else’s opinions.
How fascinating. I've never thought about comparing Kyle and Pakman before reading your comment. I don't know that I would characterize either as coming off as a know-it-all, but they do both represent their viewpoints firmly, in a fashion evincing their true belief. Of the two, however, I find that Kyle is the more likely to use crude language and terminologies and otherwise express himself in ways that seem to embody a certain contempt towards that which he is pillorying, and I'm fine with that, the same as I welcome Mike Malloy's delivery style. Pakman, to me, comes off as a bit more polite, prim and proper in his delivery style, eschewing vulgarities, which, on its face, is definitionally less disparaging, and I'm fine with that, too.

I feel like he’s polite in the same way a parent can scold a child politely when that parent thinks they should be teaching a child a lesson, if that makes sense. He’s the parent and whoever disagrees with him is just the child who is woefully wrong in his eyes. Some people may enjoy that, especially the people who fully agree with him, but you aren’t going to change any minds that way. Maybe he’s not interested in changing minds which is completely his choice, and I probably shouldn’t fault him for that. I just thought given both of them did interviews with the same podcast/interviewer one of them came off looking much better than the other. You can be assertive in you beliefs while still being able to understand someone else’s and I think Kyle does a much better job of being relatable and not seeming like a pompous liberal who thinks conservatives are just dumb hopeless people not worth the time given to understand why they think the way they do.

This was like every conversation I have with conservatives. They spend most of the podcast talking about individual responsibilities and when you bring up the kid that drops out of high school because his parents died , now they don't want to talk about individual issues.
How many people who are broke had both parents die at 16? I'm on Kyle's side the majority of the time, but this example was kind of dumb. I'd stick to arguing that college costs a fortune, housing is astronomical, and you're one disaster away from not recovering if you don't have time to build a safety net.

It's a lot easier for individuals to do what it takes to stay out of poverty and thrive... when they didn't start in poverty. When you grew up in poverty and were socialized in surviving rather than thriving, had less access to quality education and so on, it's harder to pull yourself up by your bootstraps.
Republicans focus on the government creating a business friendly environment by actively doing things, but says when it comes to people the government should be hands off. They understand environmental effects on businesses and care about helping them out, but not citizens...

I had to take multiple breaks from watching this on the other channel because, while I used to like him, PBD is so insufferable in his views/arguments that I was seeing red (in more ways than one).
“Why don’t you move there” I would’ve been done at that point. It’s this weird way of acknowledging that another country does in fact do something more effectively than in the US, and instead of just acknowledging that, they change the debate From “can the US improve” to “prove that you actually like the country” by suggesting you are more loyal to another country. It’s insane, it’s an insane way to think and I can’t stand adults doing that as a way to avoid acknowledging a truth they already know. This PBD guy feels like that 9 yr old that brags about how his dad could beat your dad up

The problem with this argument is that there will always be workers needed empty bins, clean offices, and stock shelves.
Unless you want to live in a world where those things just aren't done. So those people need paying more than they currently do. Also, even careers a little more advanced, like teaching, doesn't pay enough in many cases. Lots of teachers have more than one job just to get by. That should never be necessary.
Also, some people just don't have very high IQs. They'll never be capable of being doctors, or managers, etc, but they still need to live and survive, and their pay for a full time job should be sufficient enough to allow that to happen.

The deep flash of anger that came out when Kyle said that his hard-working friend might not have graduated from high school was very revealing. To feel comfortable immediately labeling the person of fuck up on that information alone I think reveals a lack of life experience. I don't know how old that other host is, but he presents himself as though he's very knowledgeable about life. To not understand that there are instances where people struggle in their childhood due to illness, abuse, disability, or whatever it might be I think goes a long way to explaining how you come to the rather simplistic cultural, social, moral framework that these two have presented throughout the discussion. I can understand not seeing the value in Collective action if you truly believed that there were no life impediments that could prevent someone from succeeding to their Highest Potential on their own. I would encourage both of these fellows to take that 50 pages of reading they say they do each day and focus it on understanding childhood a bit better.
both of the PBD hosts ignore anything that happens in someone's life... what if they were a teen and get arrested because their parent is selling drugs out of a house, and they are in jail for the first 5 years of their life till 20... then they can't get an apartment, a good job, what are they going to get into finance like the two hosts? No... will they start a business? Maybe, but probably not... What if they get in a car accident while drunk, sued for their life savings and live paycheck to paycheck paying another person's medical bills? Thier whole thing is as though nothing bad happens in someone's life.

Yeah, that was incredibly flippant to label him a fuck up. And what was maybe even worse was the implication that children should have to pay for their parents mistakes. If that's truly how you want things to work, then you'll end up with families struggling in perpetuity until one or some combination of God, the government, or volunteering steps in to help. In any case, that mentality of punishing children seems woefully out of touch. If anything, his response should've been, "how can we ensure parents are responsible?"

Does anybody remember when Bernie Sanders went on Fox News, for the first time, and everyone was saying it was a bad idea, but reality it turned out to be a great success. If not the first Bernie Sanders was one of the very first and a very long time to go on a show that did not agree with him in front of a crowd of people and came out smelling like roses.
No wonder. When you put a reasonable person in the feedback loop it creates a contrast that shows just how deranged, loopy and dumb people inside it hav gotten. It was true for FoxNews and it is true here. Kyle saying just common sense stuff makes those two guys look high on their own farts.

1. That’s not common, it’s more common for someone to drop out of high school for nefarious reasons rather than someone having bother their parents die and have to pay bills. Leftists love to talk about “anecdotal” evidence being non important?m, but Kyle based his entire argument off that.
2. It’s more common for people to actually graduate high school, if we looked at stats it’s way more than 50% , if it was below, then this idea of kids dropping out because their parents die would be an actually good argument to have.

It’s super interesting. I’ve noticed this with my left and right friends (including myself). You’re sort of talking past each other, but not intentionally. Both people feel as though they are communicating with each other, but personal anecdotes mean very little to the left, and in-depth ideology means very little to the right.
Both sides would also disagree with that - lefties pride themselves on their empathy for others, and righties believe their policy is bulletproof - but you can really see the difference in communication style on display here.
These guys have such narrow tunnel vision of a mid-level corporate manager, they actually think one could run a country like US in the same way one runs a hotdog stand or a party planning business. The notion of having the public sign off on a specific tax collection for every item of expendature would add so much redundant cost we'd run of numbers to calculate it. And healthcare is not a for-profit industry you stupid dicksmokin donkeyhole !!

I was born in Slovenia, it’s ex Yugoslavian country thats been independent since 1991, and fully joined EU in 2003.
We were part of Socialist regime before and very fast adopted western capitalism.
On paper everything was state owned before but in practice workers were the real owners of every factory, of every business.
Salary gap between a CEO of a company and a cleaner in the company were not as crazy as today.
One example is (and I’m talking this from my own experiences, from being a kid and teenager growing up in that regime)
My father was a electrician for a big curtain factory and my mother was a sales person in a grocery store. At the end of the year, when the business made more money then expected both of my parents received part of that money and every summer we went on a one month vacation in Croatia where accommodation was 100% payed by the company. These summer houses were owned by government/workers so they got to use them.
My childhood memories were beautiful with my parents not being overworked as they became after. These vacations were modest, no 5 starts hotels and so, its Croatian places that are now being rented for 200€ per night.
Something that now 90% of the Slovenian, Croatian families simply can never afford.
With Slovenia becoming independent and my parents being very motivated to create something of their own. They started their own business in 90s with the money that was quite easy to save during Socialistic times. They started with opening one “Car parts store” and eventually added 4 more over the years. We were financially doing very well, i guess you could say we were rich. My parents were extremely hard working and smart with money. They build their own house, out if the city and even bought 2 big apartments that would supposed to be for me and my brother. So looking from outside everything was great, but the quality of life went extremely downhill, my parents were overworked, those one month vacations were gone, simply because there was no time for that, if we could squeeze 6 days per year it was already a lot.
With parents being overworked, health problems occurred (thankfully we didn’t adopted western healthcare practices, even now going to doctor is practically for free)
My parents were stressed, working 6 days per week, my 7 years younger brother had the luxury of getting a lot of material things and opportunities that i hasn’t ( he started a lot of hobbies that he never followed trough) but he missed on having happy parents that had time for him, like for instance I had. Even though he had much more things I definitely consider myself as a lucky one.
Fast forward to today. Due to globalisation and foreign corporations majoring of Slovenian businesses went bankrupt or were simply bought up by businesses from richer countries.

One of the biggest problems national problems based in my opinion is housing crisis. Prices are the same as for instance in Germany, where I live now for 6 years.

Yeah I thought it got pretty frustrating at times, especially when Kyle was bringing so much to the table in terms of substance. It's cool that he got a little bit more assertive towards the end tho
I felt like the host genuinely thought that 1000/1000 people who work hard will make it and was surprised when Kyle said about 15% of them will succeed which is more based in reality imo. Such a naive perspective to think that 100% of people can just read more and make it in life without any help. Kyle did such an amazing job and he must have turned some heads in their audience. I hope so at least

Wanting to change or improve America doesn't mean you think America is terrible . The question "If America is so bad why do so many immigrants want to come here" can be answered with the question "if Disney world is so great why are they constantly building new rides and attractions." Something can be good yet improvable. Something can be the best and improvable.
Kyle is amazing he totally debunks everything they said and in a clear,accurate,informative and intelligent way.

I'll be 50 next year. I have been saying exactly what Kyle is saying since before he was born. Until a few years ago, I was a radical to most people. I am so happy that I'm hearing this perspective taking hold these days/ I have so much I want to toss into this discussion but no one will appreciate a dissertation, so I'll just suggest you look into the education thing with Regan and the "educated proletariat'. You will get answers to a great many questions about where we are today from that little snippet of history.
The history of this world is outrageous and awful and wonderful and sad, and hopeful. It is complicated, and America represents some of the most complicated elements of this grand story. We have reached our adolescence in our social maturity level, but if we don't kill ourselves by driving recklessly, our future looks pretty promising. We just have to remind those who are driving the car that their carelessness will hurt us all, maybe even kill us, and that they need to be a bit more protective of us. We are at their mercy, after all, and they can't keep going so fast while admiring themselves in the rearview mirror instead of watching where they are going.
My one major issue with this is the desire to better your family and kids is often a bigger driving force in decision making for one’s parents. To sacrifice for a child and family and to put off gratification today so your children have it better is the point that’s missing from the start at zero and the point I think was being gotten at, but missing the critical words. The family structure breaks down further when you tax everyone to start even if the family decisions to further their kids instead of instant gratification.

@Will O and I would say while life is complicated it is also quite simple at the same time. The reason there is so much focus on the individual is because that's where 90% of the control is. The person makes the decision on what he does with the resources he has and how he goes about attaining the resources he doesn't have. When you start focusing on trying to fix the world's problems you start getting into trouble. You can't force people to be good workers and you can't force people to be good people. That's the problem I see from people who advocate for leftist solutions. When you have equality of opportunity it's then down to the individual to make the most of that opportunity.
