  • Bloody hell! Jon is in London to talk about populism. Turns out it’s not unique to America! Jon is joined by Ian Hislop, editor of the satirical current affairs publication Private Eye Magazine, to discuss the reign of Rupert Murdoch, the economic consequences of a government run by lunatics, and the explicitly corrupt yet unbeatable right-wing propaganda machine.

I don't know Jon Stewart, but Ian Hislop is your typical 'liberal'. He complains about the right wing, but when the UK had a chance of a centre-left government under Corbyn (name a policy that wasn't centre-left), Hislop and everyone like him (including most of the Labour MPs) strove to portray Corbyn as an extremist/a communist/an anti-Semite/to blame for Brexit/a terrorist sympathiser/a far-left lunatic/take your pick. No doubt Hislop is a fan of Starmer - regardless of what he says - as Starmer is offering the same neo-liberal policies as the Tories, but with slightly less (and only slightly) of the racist, far-right posturing. Hislop likes to present himself as someone who critiques the elite, but he is very much one of them, and is an enemy of change (probably because he likes his cosy lifestyle).

The croatian satirical magazine they are refering to in the end there is Feral Tribune. It was a beacon of hope especialy in post-war croatia where nationalist chauvinistic rhetoric was a normal thing and the corruption was rampant . They tried everything to shut them down, the founder was recruited in the army, they sabotaged their advertisers etc.
In the end it was shut down, no adds, no money. They are now the symbol of independent journalism in Croatia and ex-Yugoslavia in general, and some of their writers are still my favourite journalists in Croatia.

I would say that Hislop certainly has a tenacity about him when he's tackling some corrupt BS, that is a trait Jon Stewart and he seem to share.
For how I remember him being personality wise and in lot of televised settings I'd say his character is closer to that of someone not unlike Christopher Hitchens, in that Hislop is also an evidentially intelligent, very well-read man with a quick wit; who enjoys verbal busting back and forth.
He can and will engage, knowledgeably on a mind boggling number of topics. And when his position is one he's passionate about he absolutely will use scathing mockery and polemicist rhetoric to expose his target's corruption, while increasing the audience's enjoyment of the brutal flaying he's engaged in.

Don't forget that most people in the end do not vote for extremists here in Europe. The Italian PM, who was to be feared ahead of the election result, didn't cause any notable crisis, but adjusted to the norm to have talks with your partner countries on all kind of issues. French elections feared the win of Le Pen, neither she or her father ever got into power. They are there to get the 20, 30 percent of angry people who listen to empty promises of going back in time when life 'was great for all'. Same in the Netherlands, where I live, people voted on a party right of Geert Wilders who was very right (and left on certain issues) years ago but not extreme enough. That party people voted for (Forum voor Democratie) has since been obliterated in the polls. The leader turned out a bigger nut than anyone would think.
He's following the US book for right wing extremists with of course siding with Putin, calling it the best day of his life when the invasion happened, tries to make trans issues a thing in our politics while no-one cares what someone else does. Same with abortion, they take that from the US, while it hasn't been an issue for Christian parties for decades. They don't even try to bring it up, knowing the fast majority of people are sane and think it's a private issue. It's a useless battle and they are too stupid to see that. Which is good, they should stay in the fringes. Life has challenges enough aside from dealing with idiots in power.
Then you have right wing leaders in lets say Hungary, but they are kept in check by the EU and their billions they can withold him. That's why the Union was founded, to keep things in check.

Honey, you haven’t listened to enough podcasts…
      .
This is actually a relatively uncomfortable conversation between smart men with very different contexts. They are incredibly smart, and funny, but this is much deeper. It’s deep enough that both danced around the idea of democratic-brotherhood (though Ian was much more reticent). You’re not wrong, love, it’s that the conversation requires more depth than your comment.
