Fashion &... Balenciaga: The Master of Haute Couture
“A woman has no need to be perfect […] to wear my dresses, the dress will do all that for her” - Cristóbal Balenciaga
Fashion &… Balenciaga celebrates the man who redefined haute couture and dominated post World War II French Fashion.
Widely considered by his contemporaries as “The Master of us All”, Cristóbal Balenciaga had a reputation as a couturier of uncompromising standards.
A highly skilled pattern cutter and tailor, Balenciaga created his innovative designs, working intently at the construction of each garment, dissecting its structure in great detail, seeking out their secrets like a puzzle, endlessly reworking and simplifying until he reached perfection.

amazing!
Glad you enjoyed! ❤️
The Eyes of Laura Mars great horror movie, Saturn award winning costumes by Theoni V. Aldrege.
To hell with the haters Paul Poiret was magnificent.
Marcel Vertes is another illustrator I love.
Feller I am now obsessed with your channel and THANK YOU for giving a shout out to Amanda Hallay, I miss her like crazy! Through her influence I started my own RUclips channel.
I miss her too! She was so supportive and encouraging!
Damn I wish I could sew and drape like that.
I wish she would do runway now. She's the best. I remember seeing her in the 70's in all these ads.
I love your programs! Please don't hate me for adding some important additions. You are truly correct that the 1980s was packed full of movements, styles and niches. I think you need to expound on this decade! The early 1980s was predominated in American fashion in several ways, with some movements overlapping elsewhere like the UK. Punk/Post Modern/MTV fashion with cool designs, sexy styles and disruptive graphics was embraced in many designers in America including Fabrice, Michael Vollbracht, and with Madonna and other musicians like Blondie. In contrast to this movement there was the Preppy movement which reigned from 1980 through the mid 80s with docksiders, Members Only jackets, Ralph Lauren Polo and Lascoste Polo shirts, Oxford shirts for men and women, charm and pearl necklaces, charm bracelets, Gucci and Cartier and Tiffany watches (Rolex was not a theme until the late 1980s), Shetland wool sweaters and Scottish print skirts, flat shoes or kitten heel shoes for women, peacoats. It was Old Money look of the Hamptons shining bright with designers like Robert Talbot, Albert Nippon, Adolfo, Brooks Brothers and Ferragamo. There was also the Romantic look which was embraced by Laura Ashley and the Emmaneuls, along with others like McClintock, and exhibited by a young Princess Diana during the early 1980s. There was the Casual Chic look that was predominated by Donna Karan, Louis Dell'Olio for Anne Klein, Halston with his new styles of beaded dresses and ruffled gowns into the mid 1980s, Armani was part of this niche being very understated and luxurious, Giorgio Saint Angelo, Adele Simpson, Sherrer, Gloria Sachs, Perry Ellis, Louis Feraud, Ralph Lauren could also be part of this group, Jaeger and Geoffrey Beene. Others in your Glamour Sector would include Valentino, Bill Blass, Carolina Herrara, Gianfranco Ferre, Galanos, Mary McFadden, Victor Edelstein, Givenchy. You also forgot the Sexy Look Sector - these were the opposite of Chanel and Valentino looks and the master was Versace, but others included Moschino, Calvin Klein, Flora Kung. There were so many designers so successful during this decade I know I am missing other names! Perhaps some of the above could be folded into your 4 categories. It was a wonderful time to live - there was so much new happening in design, retro styles, art collecting, so many influencers.
1:40 is that meant to be 1890 - 1900 on the display
Yes
0:09 came for the period style, stayed for your vivacious presence!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed
❤ Thank you so much!
You are very on target with your commentary. Very informative. Enjoyed your video. Balenciaga is truly a master tailor.
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed!
Thanks you so much! I’m glad you enjoyed ❤️
One of the perfumes should be named, 'Never Explain'! Love the wiggly host, Scotty-boy!
How did you forget Iman ? She was the first black model to make over a million.
It’s hard to include everyone in only 20 minutes! I did developed this video into an hour long lecture and I of course included Iman ❤️
@@Fashionand Thanks !!! I love your work !!!
Charles James actually suffered from OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) as well as probably Narcissism. That was why his businesses always failed. His OCD prevented him from leading a normal life. There are documented stories of him taking 5 years to deliver a dress. Or going to the customers house and taking a dress back to redo the sleeve. His obsessive perfectionism crippled his career.
So fun! New sub!
Thank you! 🙏
What am amazing designer! would love to see what he would do with modern technology! got a bit teary watching and listening to this
He was a genius! I doubt he would still be working in fashion if he was alive today. He would probably be a recluse or a conceptual artist or something
cant wait to see who your next deep dive is!@@Fashionand
can you do Iris van harpen as your next designer? @@Fashionand
Fabric came in 22" widths back then. When Worth saw the first cage (sprung steel) in hoops, one fitting inside of each other when flat on floor, he commanded it be made in 200" round, the largest of its time. Thus requiring 9 panels of fabric. Because Worth still worked under M&G, he was only allowed to order (4) hoops. Later in life when Worth felt comfortable with is position in fashion and his wealth he had his favorite pattern EYES & EARS woven. From a design of a garment in a museum he frequented. The wearer, was stating, "he saw and heard" everything. Worth made a lose frock coat for himself of said fabric.
That was great ❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you ❤️
Thank you for sharing!. Salutes from northeast of México. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

As a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology ( class of 92 ) in NYC I thoroughly enjoyed this. Well done, Diana was like a saint to us fashion students then and now. There are very few that can compare to her if any at all.
Thank you so much!
Come back please

What is the music? I think it's part my history? GIorgio Morodor? 80's movie?😅
Fabulous! PBS should hire this team!
This commentator is a horrible. Get rid of him...hespeaks poor enunciation.
What's the soundrack in the beginning?
Antonio actually went to Traphagen School of Fashion in Manhattan when he was 16, and took his first illustration class. I should know because I was a student there 82-83-84, and he’d come every year with Juan to visit and talk with the students. I still have his autograph.
Amazing documentary, Id just discover Antonio due to a japanese manga drawer (mangaka) Hirohiko Araki, who used to take inspiration on Antonio´s work. Please check him out
Thanks you for the recommendation and thank you for watching!
Beverly Johnson was great in print. But never great on the runway.
Pat Cleveland was a class act.
This was a great episode. I think disco got spit at but at the same time it was the most fun. I really wonder if it could ever evolve again.
2:47 😂😂😂
dear Scott, I have no words to describe my awe for your style, sense of fashion and impeccable taste. thank you for another wonderful video!
Thanks so much 😊
great video, thanks!
your knowledge of style and fashion is unbelievable! great channel! you deserve at least a million subscribers.
Thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoyed- please subscribe and watch my other videos 🩵
If I somehow has the money to buy the label or become their creative director, I would change the label direction from couture to bespoke tailoring based from what he always wear inspired by Thom Browne couture collection.. if you look closely, only Hugo Boss and Burberry put unique design suit and formalwear as their main product.. other brand either doing ridiculous avant-garde, sustainable fashion with plain boring design or overpriced logomania streetwear.
It sad to see her label got revived 3 times but still fails.. but unlike other revived brand like balenciaga and other, modern designer didnt bring the house down with their dumb design..
Thank you for mentioning that Billie Blair was a part of this historical event. She was an amazing African American Top Model in the 70's.
I agree! I believe she was used by all 5 American designers at Versailles ❤️
So erudite.
Thank you, I hope you enjoyed ❤️
Thank you!
As much I would like to agree with you and everybody here, I think that the people in this book - especially the main characters - emerge as rather horrible persons. Nothing that diminishes their talent, of course, but as human beings they are far from enjoyable.
Of course! It’s always subjective!
