- Hello everyone and welcome to the official launch of the Fashion &… Book Club where I’ll be discussing and recommending fashion books that are essential reading for any fashion aficionado!
My first recommendation is The Beautiful Fall; Fashion, Genius and Glorious Excess in 1970s Paris by Alicia Drake.
This is not only one of my favourite books because it covers one of the most creative and decadent eras in 20th century fashion, but also because at the centre of it all are two of fashion’s luminaries - Yves Saint Laurent, the reclusive rebel, and Karl Lagerfeld, the flamboyant king of reinvention, who divided the 1970s Parisian fashion elite into two rival tribes.

I have read the book myself and have to admit, that it is one of the best books I've ever read.
I wished so often, that it would never end.
As a person, who has experienced the 70s and also the 80s and its excessive drug abuse and the aids crisis, it made me almost cry several times for nostalgia, because this book is so well written and researched and the fotos are marvelous.
This is definitely THE book, I would take on a lonely island, if I had to choose only one single book.
Get it, read it and let yourself be captivated by a trip to a time without compare.

We just read designer autobiographies in one of my classes so this is very timely. I read Hartnell's, it was a delight! I would love to be in a fashion book club, although TBH it might be honest to squeeze it in my schedule at the moment. But I will definitely be picking up a copy of this as I adore YSL's 70s designs.

This book sounds great - I’m definitely going to pick this up! My favorite reads are memoirs, biographies and histories of [fill in the blank]. I love a good documentary too!

@@Fashionand ...genius idea....that way people learn the subtext within the clothes...genius...i would like to BEG you to do....the book....THING OF BEAUTY THE TRAGEDY OF SUPERMODEL GIA...by STEVEN GAINES...the book was made into the film... GIA...which starred ANGELINA JOLIE...who at 1st didnt want to do the role...it was too close to her life...but she was brave enough to do it...and she got a GOLDEN GLOBE AWARD for it....her 1st award...in an excellent career....

As much I would like to agree with you and everybody here, I think that the people in this book - especially the main characters - emerge as rather horrible persons. Nothing that diminishes their talent, of course, but as human beings they are far from enjoyable.
