During the second half of the 17th century, King Louis XIV was a very powerful man who built and extended upon his father's old hunting lodge called Versailles. Believing in divine rights and his kingship to be destined by God (like most monarchs during that period cough Charles I of England), this made Louis XIV very ambitious and therefore dangerous. Inviting all the nobles of France, he created a mini world, a kingdom within a kingdom. In Versailles, everyone had to abide by his rules and attend certain events in a certain way at a specific time. Feeling almost like a prison I imagine. Versailles is still one of the most beautifully built places on Earth and I will end up going there one day! This TV show was a really great series and I was gutted it ended the way it did. George Blagden is outstanding in this role, as is Alexander Vlahos who plays his brother Phillipe. I also thought George was brilliant as Athelstan in Vikings prior to this role.

With how long Louis XIV reigned (72 years, 1643-1715) they could have made a dozen or more seasons showing his reigns progression.
Same case with The Tudors. They could have continued with Edward, Mary and then Elizabeth’s reign. Then it would have really been The Tudors (Plus, they could have even added a few prequels, starting with Margaret)
It would have been EPIC. But, alas…it was not to be.
TV show producers are lazy sensationalists. Thriving only on petty intrigues and sex. They, quite often, miss the more important aspects of History.
It could have been like The Crown changing actors to cover his reign
They totally were going to continue production, but COVID happened and filming was made impossible in Europe. Then by the time production was possible, it had been halted too long and the actors moved onto other projects.
I was so devastated as I'm obsessed with the time period, the genius and ego of Louis XIV, and that beautiful palace.
Oh well.
Brothers...the glories of this world is great, but do not forget the eternal, everlasting glory of kingdom of the righteous king, Yahweh. Righteous God, in your grace, may these lost children return to you. Amin!
Louis XIV made himself immortal with the Palace of Versailles I visited it once & it was Mindblowing I couldn't believe my own Eyes & what I was seeing The Beauty of this Monument is insane He was a Man with Vision Taste & an Eye for Detail something I've never seen anywhere else & I live in Vienna where we have also great Architecture Truly Incredible
The show was brilliant. This really protrays how Louis rose from being a king controlled by the nobles, to Louis the great, Le roi soleil. He was truly blessed by the sun.

I won't comment on the "blessed by the sun" statement. But with his religious tyranny (protestants covert or else) he was not a good man.
@@thomasmead4642 Sir, maybe you should dig a little bit deeper about him before saying he wasn't a good man. Considering all the good things he did like
1. Building a hospital for soldiers (wounded or retired). (Les invalides)
2. He was the first king to ever impose taxes on the nobles.
3. He employed young artists to build Versailles, thereby helping him.
4. He lighted up the streets of Paris.
5. He tolerated homosexuals which wasn't the case in most European courts.
He was a good ruler and a good man, there were some things like revocation of the edict of Nantes but all the good thing he did outweigh the bad things. Every ruler at some point has done something wrong, we are bound to make mistakes.
Oh please, I was hoping this annoying fakie would die the whole series. I seriously got disappointed, all he did was go from not so corrupt to very corrupt. His brother as well..annoying, he's got issues left and right, only times I admired him is when he stood up to his self obsessed brother. I did respect many others in the show.
Third season was poor compared to the other two, that conspiracy thing strayed too far away from the historical accuracy I appreciated in the show.
@@MauricioRomanov Third season was not very appreciable because of the illegitimacy thing, the Queen made up adultery and she being killed by a bug. But the actors did a great job.
I am gonna watch this. I'm so obsessed with Versailles and Louis IV era😭

I love this series and wish Netflix has not canceled it. I've been waited for season 4 and just found out. It was so good I've watched it a few times.

I finished this show after I came back from Paris. I cannot get enough of Versailles. Literally lives in my heart. Also he has such beautiful eyes. ❤ beautiful and heartbreaking show.
I wasn't born in France but I've been to Versailles so many times in my life so far n always call It "My Second Home" in the world 😃...
Because I've always felt like I was at home there, especially in the gardens... Can't have enough of them with all the beauty around...
Nice, but it is still a show, a Netflix drama, a fiction, not a documentary. Many things in this show are inaccurate and made up to entertain a 21st century tv audience
Versailles, many don't seem to realise, was built as a holding pen for the nobles. Keep them all in one place so they cannot conspire and rebel against the country, if they did...they would have to consider that their families where held by the king. It worked...never again did a king face rebellion.

It's a great thing that a 1000years ennemy is doing a serie on France history. My country is not loving itself enough anymore to do it. Anglosaxon are kings of the french bashing (envious?) but also gave France its credit. I live in Versailles, hearing all of this in english is a bit weird :)

The Mirror Gallery in Versailles is truly amazing! Sun-drenched and dignified. Only a few galleries, halls or chambers in whole world can match it in dignity or beauty.

One of my favourite series, if not my absolute favourite. Maybe not perfectly historically accurate but so so perfectly written. And the cast is so so fitting as is the music. I can always rewatch this without getting bored. It would have been so cool to see the actual ending the writers had planned for this

Just came back from Paris this week. Decided to visit Versailles after seeing the series, only plandemic stopped me. It was outta this world as Louis was ....The place he created is the most beautiful on this world made by human hands
This video is a gem, a shining jewel. It is moving, remarkable, harmonic, aesthetic, impactful and elegant. I literally cried at some point. I really admire Louis XIV, he is my favorite historical figure, and I hope to one day have the honor to study about him in France or to meet him in another life, as I have always wanted. This video is for now the nearest thing for me to see Louis XIV in reality. George Blagden is a fine actor who embodied completely his character, he made the Sun King come back to life.
Thank you for creating this masterpiece as I think it represents perfectly the man that Louis was, what he created and believed in. Hope there will be more series about him in the future, but for sure none other will be as magnetic as Versailles was.

This was, no doubt the best thing I ever saw on net flex. All of the actors plus the magnificent buildings& scenery was the best I had ever seen. I was anxiously waiting for the fourth season. I would want want to watch any movie the two brothers & the King’s main guard was in. I am sorry I cannot watch it again. If it was a movie, it surely would win the Oscar.

Yeah, the third season lacked in comparison with the first two
Louis XIV and his younger brother, Philippe I, Duc d’Orléans, were still true Bourbons aka Capetians.
His paternal grandfather was King Henri IV of France and with that being said, he was also a male-line descendant of Louis IX of France (Saint Louis).
When the DNA for members of the House of Orléans-Braganza was tested, they were confirmed to be male-line descendants of King Louis XIII of France.
If one is not familiar with the French history and the sun king it is not easy to understand what is really going on I happen to have a French culture which helped me
All one needs is a good history book/website, and time to read and engage with it.
