  • Fashion &… Couture
Haute Couture is an art form - inseparable from fashion - that achieved some of its finest moments during the years 1947 to 1957.
Parisian fashion had a reputation for excellence as early as the 17th century, when the expertise of Parisian craftsmen became widely admired in the royal courts of Europe.
Post WWII and the German Occupation of Paris, the city reaffirmed its position as the Capital of Fashion and its reputation for producing the most luxurious and creative fashion money could buy.
This period is also regarded as the zenith of French couture when designers such as Christian Dior, Cristóbal Balenciaga, Pierre Balmain and Jacques Fath reigned supreme.
During this ‘golden age’ of couture, London was also a major player and produced a great many couturiers such as Norman Hartnell and John Cavanagh, who contributed greatly to the history of fashion.
Fashion &... Couture is a tale of two cities, delving into the world of Fashion, luxury and exclusivity.

Oh wow, very detailed video Mr. Scott Schiavone you must have done a lot of research! While watching your video I wonder if Chanel and Balenciaga were friends or friendly with one another as it seems they kind of treated fashion the same way. By the way love your top and pearls!

Thank you Alexander! I’m glad you enjoyed the video. I’m not sure if Chanel was friendly with anyone! She was rather vocal about her male contemporaries especially with regards to their sexuality - she is on record making derogatory homophobic comments. She did believe Balenciaga to be the “only real designer” but vehemently hated Dior’s aesthetic. She did name Yves Saint Laurent as her design heir and successor but only because “someone will have to succeed me one day.” She was an enigma and eventually a victim to her own success and stubbornness really. Hugely influential in 20th century fashion but mainly because she outlived all the others and was a great self promoter. I do have an episode on Chanel and on Fashion & Queerness, which highlights Chanel’s homophobia, that you should check out! Thank you again!
