Hello everyone and welcome to the Fashion &… Book Club where I discuss and recommend fashion books that are essential reading for any fashion aficionado!
This week’s Fashion &… Book Club choice is The Battle of Versailles; The Night American Fashion Stumbled into the Spotlight and Made History by Robin Givhan.
The reason why I am recommending this book is because it is a classic example of the rise of the underdog, something I think we can all relate to!
Published in 2015, The Battle of Versailles tells the amazing David and Goliath story of how for one night, on the world’s stage, 5 American designers completely eclipsed the Kings of French Haute Couture.
This book not only tells the story of a legendary fashion event - it delves into the make-up of the American fashion system throughout the 50s, 60s and 70s detailing the social history and racial inequality of the Fashion world from the perspective of both the designer and the model.
A lively and meticulously well-researched account of this unique event, The Battle of Versailles is a sharp, engaging cultural history that reads so well and with such fast pace that you can hardly put it down.

There is also a documentary about this night here on RUclips, which I can recommend absolutely, because of interviews with persons, who participated in the show and lot of fotos and short film clips of this historic night.
