the protective film can remain on, until the vacuum formed part is trimmed and ready to be placed on the model. also, try different vacuum forming material. some materials smell bad, and others don't smell much. and you need to wait until the material droops about 1 inch from it's original flat position, before lowering it onto the master mold. sometimes called the plug. never heard of that being refered as a "buck". but who knows.
I appreciate you sharing your tips. Next time I get the machine out I’ll try them. I’m currently using .02 PETG vivak material. Next time I’ll try to buy a thinner material.
Nice video, just hold the mic away from your mouth.
Thanks for watching 👍
Got the S4U, just testing first prints, love it!
That’s a great printer! Enjoy the journey👍

Great video! Are there any issues with water washable resins now? because in the past they used to be prone to cracking after curing. again great content Steve
None at all. I use water wash because the smell of IPA makes my nose go crazy.
You have completed alleviated my anxiety towards getting a resin printer. I'm so excited! Thank you!
I’m so glad to help. Plan to waste a bottle of resin in your first week figuring it out. Make sure to be safe as the resin is not good to breathe or touch.
@ScaleModelExperiment Absolutely. I appreciate you so much. Thank you, again!
Nice job. Looks like you're using orthodontic retainer film for your windows. What thickness plastic sheet did you use? Soft plastic or hard? May I suggest using Pacer Formula 560 canopy glue for attaching your windshields. It dries clear, will not cloud the clear plastic, water washable, stays flexible, and gives plenty of working time to move things around. RC airplane guys have been using it for ages.
Correct I use a .02 PETG Film in the vacuum former. I do use canopy glue but did not this time. Probably should have…
I've never used a water wash resin, but I also don't have any problems with using standard resin. I've been using 70% alcohol to wash my prints and haven't had any problems. I should try using 99% to seen if it makes any difference.
Hi Walt, I only use water wash resins because the smell of IPA makes my nose go crazy. Elegoo sent me their detergent to try out and it works amazing and smells nice.
Very nice ice kit. Great review. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching, I appreciate your support 👍
Great job. I've been looking at this model to buy and print so this is good.
Print both the full engine and in pieces so you know how to fit it all inside the engine bay. I suggest replacing the drive shafts with styrene rod as well. They were a little short.
@@ScaleModelExperiment Thanks. I can modify the .stl files for the drive shafts as needed so that shouldn't be a problem.
It looks like more material was wasted than was used for viable parts.
That is the trade off. You CAN print parts low to the build plate to reduce waste at the expense of parts that have print lines all over them. That’s why I angle and lift the parts to reduce prep time.
Awesome James!
Thank you so much Manny!👍
@@ScaleModelExperiment Your welcome!!
Great overview of that model
Thanks so much for watching. I appreciate your support👍
Absolutely amazing, the 1969 Dodge Polara is my all time favorite car, My dad had a B7 Blue with a White vinyl top back when I was 5 years old. That was 1978. I'm amazed at how much we have for our hobby now.
Hi Stephen, thats very cool that your dad had one. You can print one and make a replica of his car. Thanks for watching and leaving me a comment.
very intersting. doing the same right now...
Cool, it was a fun project. Enjoy your journey Paolo👍
In commercial vacuum formed bodies, the manufacturer usually leaves the the protective film on the plastic on the surface that is away from the buck. They also use a light coating of release agent on the buck to make removing the plastic easier. I like that cartoon Miata. Where can I get the files for that?
Thanks for the tip on the vacuum former. The Miata is from a designer named tuner kits.
That cartoon Mustang looks fun. Are the files pre-supported or does one have to create the supports?
You have to create the supports yourself for this model. I’ve done a few videos on how to create supports and how to angle pieces.
I've purchased a few of his designs and overall very happy with them. I typically use the shell, interior and engine bay and adapt them to fit on a suitable scale 4WD scale RC chassis, usually works out to a 1:9 scale based on the track width of the chassis. I did the 1962 International C120 step side this summer and it turned out great. Great designs to use and currently working on the 1959 Chevy Suburban and Nissan Sunny Hakotora.
That’s a huge print! What size printer do you use?
@thanks! I break the large components into sections that are assembled post print using alignment holes inserted during the slicing operation. Short lengths of styrene rod are then inserted into the holes and serve as alignment locators for the mating parts. I run a Bambu P1S for the fdm prints and a Saturn 3 Ultra for things like the grille, dashboard, lenses, etc. The windows are typically cut out of clear sheet with a small cnc and the curved glass is vacuum formed. It’s so great having tools available to us at an obtainable cost, what a time to be alive lol
@@nuge74 I’ll say! You do have it all figured out!
@@ScaleModelExperiment lol I’ve had my share of head scratching moments and failures😁 Lots of fun though and a great hobby. All the best!
@nuge74 that’s the right attitude. Figure it out! I’m actually glad I started with the 4k machine. I wouldn’t have appreciated the 12k machine.
Hi ! Do you have a link for this Ferrari, I can't find it on Andrey Mezrodny sites !!! That small Ferrari you did, could it be printed in bigger scale ? Thank you ! I really enjoy your videos about resin printing scale automobiles.
Here is a link to the files: cults3d.com/en/3d-model/game/ferrari-sf90-xx
Very entertaining. The 40 looks clean and realistic. You’ve got some great skills, flames are beautiful. Look forward to more
That was a fun project to take on. I complained most of the time but I’m happy with the way it turned out. Thanks for watching 👍
Great video, I have been printing for 1 year now, you commented that Andry was also on CG trader. He had a sale on 10 euros a model, lots of models I missed first time round on 3d cult. I brought 15, so thanks for the info.
What a guy! I’m sure Andrey appreciates your support. I have my share of his files as well.
Great videos, very much worth watching. Can you tell me what minimum wall thickness you use? Thanks
Thanks so much for watching. I don’t edit files so I don’t know what the thickness is. I have however taken risks with some designers only to get paper thin models that print badly.
@@ScaleModelExperiment Thanks for that. Yes, I think minimum should be 1mm. I model in CAD 1:1 and know scaling down does not necessarily work. You have to artificially thicken your models. It is a balance. But yours look great.
I love that car, because it made so many people really MAD.
For sure! The Ferrari purists went crazy when it came out.
whole lotta waisted resin to print a part. 😅
Yes, I agree but that’s the price we pay for resin printing.
try using AntiAliasing to hide layer lines, and see if it affects details
Chitubox 2.2 doesn’t have an antialiasing feature. I think it does a decent job of hiding layer lines. I started with a 4k machine so everything with my 12k machine is no big deal to sand.
@@ScaleModelExperiment Resolution is not that important, pixel size matters in these cases, i know sanding fixes the issues, but if you get some bad layer lines in hard places to reach AA might be better. Try using Lychee
Hey buddy I'm 13 years old and I love model cars right now I'm working on a remote control 540i BMW
That’s a great car! Good luck with your project, thanks for watching 👍
Really cool. 👍
Thanks again bud 👍
Cool 🚙
Thanks bud 👍
What resin are you using here?
I used Elegoo 8k space grey water washable resin to print the bodies.
Fantastic small scale. The reason you got a loss of detail when you scaled down your car to 64 scale was because you scaled down a larger model. If the model is designed to be small you can get way smaller with fantastic detail. You should see if the designer could change the scale for you. If it's done right you should be able to get down to an amazing size. Also, when you scale down you must also make your layer height smaller. Try printing your smallest version and change the layer height to 25 microns, you'll get better small detail.
I totally understand. I did not rescale the files at all. That is the way they were given to me. I do agree that files designed for smaller prints achieve better results. The Kei truck I printed will eventually be upsized to 1/24 for printing. I did not consider changing the layer height when printing smaller. I left it alone at .025. Thanks for watching and leaving me the tips.
What resin are u using. Can you share your settings ?
For this video I used Elegoo 8k space grey water wash resin. I printed the parts at .025 layer height with 2.4 second exposure time. Your exposure may vary depending on your environment and printer. I recommend running a test verification print. Thanks for watching👍
@@ScaleModelExperimentthanks !
Great Video! Do you recommend applying Tamiya Gloss Clear over decals once applied to the model? Im in the process of building the AMT Surfer van. I did the main color in Tamiya Mica Red. What do you think? Let me know This kit has lots of tedious decals. Thanks.
That’s a tough question. I’ve seen others get fabulous results using TS13 over decals. I’ve also seen horror shows. I use 2k urethane automotive clear over decals because it doesn’t shrink or attack decals. If you are GOOD with a rattle can you can apply over decals. Otherwise If you are a beginner don’t risk it.
@@ScaleModelExperimentthanks for the tip. I'll experiment on some spare decals and paint. I'm in the process of finishing up a Revell '40 Ford Convertible street rod.
@johnclemans7802 sounds like a cool project. Best of luck👍
Can't believe how satisfying that crunchy sounds are, especially when you removed the body off its supports... 😁 Great job, James!!
I could make a video of just that… taking parts off 😂
For people that suffer from misophonia it's an unbearable noise. I had to skip that whole section of the video. I love the prints though, keep up the great work!
@ sorry about that! I had no idea.
@@ScaleModelExperiment No, I'm sorry to bring it up. It's just a common thing on RUclips, ASMR seems to have taken over
One of my clients wanted me to model a small building with a car to go with it that he would print. I told him the car would be about 3mm long and he said it was fine so I did it. Just for fun I decided to print the car myself. It looked good but it was like a grain of rice and I quickly lost it.
It’s somewhere next to my mirror that I lost from the kei truck 😂
Oh wow James, those are some super cool projects! You know I love smaller scales, especially tooned.. and that Hoonicorn Mustang is simply awesome!! Love those 64 scales too, well done 👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks Karl! The Mustang and Kei truck are also scalable to 1/24 scale when i want to print them.
Your tweezers reminded me of candle wick scissors. They may be useful to cut through the supports to make it easier to remove them by hand. I may try it.
Yes, they are handy for removing supports. Thanks for watching👍
Small scale is great for some Christmas Ornaments, perfect timing!
Or stocking stuffers😁
That is amazing. I have a printer I’ve owned for three years and it’s still in the box. I’m afraid to try it.
Get outta here! Break open that box and print something! You’ll be hooked.
Wow!
Thanks for watching William👍
You either have incredible big hands or those prints are microscopic😂
Hi Oliver! I have long skinny fingers so yes they are very small.😂 I’m printing your special model now.
Great video James keep em coming..love seeing your 3d printing adventures.
Thanks so much Brett, I am enjoying the journey and bringing you all along for the ride.
Use a bath of warm water when you remove the pieces from the supports
That’s a good point. I washed and let the Mustang pieces dry before taking them off the supports.
Very cool. For my garage diorama I took some of the cars from cults3D and shrunk them to 1/24 scale of a 1/24th scale model to put in a display cabinet. They ended up being ~2mm tall each printed on 2 supports. Quality was of course terrible, but it serves the part.
A 2mm car? Wow! That’s tiny!
Wow they all look cool
Thanks for watching Travis 👍
Excellent detail. That’s good to see as I’m getting ready to print a 1/43 71’ road runner. 👍
I have Andrey’s 72 RR files. Hmmm good luck with your print bud👍
The further you went, the more impressed I was.
Here’s the thing Ray, I can tweak my settings to make the cars even more sharp. It’s a rabbit hole for sure. But, that comes at the expense of build time.
@@ScaleModelExperiment ??? But you got the same scale in better detail as you went along (and using a different software site). Are you saying you changed settings on those to make detail better, not that the software provider did a better job?
@ you’re absolutely correct, I changed nothing except the files I was printing. One designer was more detail than the other. Not knocking anyone, but one was designed for a larger scale and simplified for 1/64, other was designed for 1/64. Now I do plan to print the Kei truck in 1/24 someday. It may seem basic at that scale.
Kool video, James. As you mentioned, if the file is right you can print down to z scale
Let’s not get carried away😂 z scale is microscopic
Super cool good vid!!
Thanks so much for watching, glad you enjoyed the video.
That’s really cool.
Thanks so much for watching, glad you enjoyed it.
