Sailing Across the Irish Sea, Campbeltown to Strangford Voyage
Sailing can be amazing when you have the right conditions. Unfortunately When ithe wind is too light or too strong, blowing from the wrong direction, pouring with rain or the tides are against you, it can be a testing journey.

Cruising the Crinan Canal with Near Disaster & Bad Weather (Ep.42)

In this episode we enter the Crinan Canal to take a short cut through to lough Fyne. In the video we mention the Canal is 6miles long, but it is actually 9 miles long. The transit starts off very pleasant but when the weather changes and we get stuck in the locks with other people that lose control of there boat, the trip turns into a bit of a nightmare. Exploring Gigha & Sailing to the Crinan Canal (Ep. 41)
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.10 месяцев назад
In this episode, strong southerly winds leave us unable to leave Gigha. So we set out to do some exploring on bikes. Unable to sleep on the boat due to the violent movements with wind and waves, we abandon the boat to sleep in out tent for 2 nights. We had planned to do some wild camping, bud this is not what we had planned. Seeing a weather window we leave Gigha and head for the Crinan Canal. ...

Sailing our Albin Vega Using a South Atlantic Windvane
Просмотров 2,1 тыс.2 года назад
In this video we set up and test our South Atlantic Windvane. We picked this Windvane from SA as it was by far the best we could afford. Even though it shipped from Argentina to the UK the cost still worked out a lot cheaper than any other Windvane we could find. The install and set up was easy and we are happy with how it's performing so far. Thanks for watching this video and please like, sub...

Hi another great video how much does passage through the canal cost?
Hi there. Thank you. They charge per metre or your boat. Can't remember exactly how much but think our transit fee was around 120 pounds for a 4 day pass
Give video how much fuel would you have used between strangford Lough and gigha?
Thinking back I think we only topped up in Glenarm so would estimate 25 to 30 litres
What a great adventure! Was this done last summer? How long did that journey take?
Yes it was. Thank you. It took 2 weeks. We would have like to see more but the weather wasn't in our favour
Fantastic that looked like a proper sailing holiday :-)
Thanks Lee. It was indeed. How's your sailing going. Your season of to a good start?
Fair play racking up the miles. You’ll be ready for yacht master in jig time
A few more miles to go. Need to get this YM theory course finished too.
Story of our lives. Wind always from the wrong direction to where we plan to go 😢
I know, going to have to start preparing plan B, C D...... for when the wind doesn't play ball
Nicely done, topside colour looks great! Caladonian Canal next time?
Thanks Richie. Oh yes, the Caladonian canal is definitely something we want to do 👌
Excellent, a nice sailing video.
Thanks Joe, we appreciate that
Never trust the forecast 😄
🤣 why must they lie to us??

Nice to see Tarbert, it's been a while since we were there. Hope you enjoyed it.
We had a great time there. Will surely be back there
Hi, I've been watching most of your episodes now and I'm really enjoying it. I'm buying a Vega in these days and are learning a lot from watching you videos. I've had motor boats for many years but this will be my first sailing experience. Best regards Geir Emil from Norway.
Hi Geir. Thanks for the lovely comment. Have you got your vega yet?
@@LittleBoatAdventures Hi, have signed contract an transferred money. I will take her home mid-May. Some preparations first. She's well taken care of, but it's a total lack of electronics..
@geiremilwestrum4663 excellent. I am jealous that you will be sailing in Norway. That is our dream to sail there. If you ever want crew let us know 😁
It would be great to have a skilled crew to teach me 😊
Blue water seaworthy boat. Not much free board so it can be a wet sail but it will sail nicely and safely. Good choice of boats. Fair winds and calm seas
Hi Vincent. Thanks for you comment. They are a great little boat indeed
Nice seeing some of the attractions of Tarbert
It's a lovely place. Will definitely like to go back there
Story of sailing life. Wind will always blow from wrong direction 😂. We’re looking forward to getting sailing again once jobs finish next week
🤣 yes, you think we'd just come to accept that
My Albin Vega 27.5 foot was the best boat I ever had. Mine came with a Volvo Penta engine, but I ran an outboard
Outboard are great for that steering problem that Vegas have, but they sail terrifically
Boat?!
Albin Vega
@@LittleBoatAdventures Thank you!
Anchor Hotel for the biggest plate of fresh langoustines! We've taken our Vega over to Tarbert a few times and that place never disappoints 🙂
It's a great place. Will definitely be back there
Another great video, guys. Well done.
Thanks Gavin, we appreciate it
I am on a similar learning curve with my Hallberg Rassy 26 here on the north coast of Brittany. So I can really relate to what you're up to. 🙂
Good work. HR are great boats and you will love it
What an amazing place that would be to learn to sail. Good luck and fair winds. HR are fantastic boats 👍
Good video❤
Glad you enjoyed!
Just saw a gent go over his epoxy repairs.... to straighten out the patches with a few inches of packing tape. over top ...after he filled the holes. Just smoothed it out with his finger and a block..let it dry and the tape peels right off when dry...much easier and smoother to sand afterward ...I thought it was a great help in filling smallish areas.
Great method to use and very quick too.
Well done Kellie! We went through the Crinan Canal earlier this year and had an interesting experience like yourselves. Would you do it again 😂 David and Helen
Hi Guys. We watched your video of Crinan and thought we had very very similar trips 😀. We'd do it again but definitely puck a better weather window. How are you guys getting on with the circumnavigation?
Hi Guys we have had the boat lifted out for winter now in Grimsby and our back in the Isle of man , We cant wait to get back and explore the south of England and Scilly Isles etc
Hi man! I am on the same boat as you (punt intended). Literally 1-2 weeks of sailing experience and from all the research I have done, the Albil Vega is what I am looking into buying now. Just quited my job after 5 years, and I am in need of some adventures. I am so happy I came across your channel. Looking forward to seeing all of your videos and reading all the comments from the amazing community I am sure you have built. Cheers! We are in touch
Hi, thanks for watching the videos. The Albin Vega is a great boat. She will treat you well. There is a great vega community on Facebook in UK, Poland and Netherlands so be sure to check those out too. Keep in touch, would like to hear about your adventures
Thank you!! I appreciate it a lot@@LittleBoatAdventures
It looks like you went through in 2022? Exasperating when you have to share the locks with selfish people who won't get off their boat and share the work. You could have stopped at the Riverside pontoon for supplies at the SPAR shop. It is about 5 minutes before Oakfield bridge. For a stress free and easy ride through you can hire someone to do all the hard work with the gates and sluices......ie a "pilot"
Yes you are right. Aww wish we'd have known about that Spar shop. We could have took our time going through then and maybe give the rainy day a miss. We did enjoy the canal really, its a beautiful cruise. Will help prep us for the Caledonian someday 🙏
Lovely sites! Wonderful trip! - Exept ... shame on the Pepperbox Crew! If these guys have not been able to help, e.g. because they all got seasick, well ... Well, I would have talked to them, asking, "how long is our Teatime? When are you ready to open the gate with me?" 🙂 What have you done to them? The AIS signal from "Pepperbox" is dead!? 😂
Great we video you making the way to France lol . I dont mind doing the locks it just takes time. Not nice doing it the rain tho. But yous are smiling and thats what its all about
Thanks Alan. Maybe next season we'll make it to France lol. Aww we actually enjoyed learning the locks, just should have timed our weather window better.
That's UK summer for you has been one wet summer for us. Would love to go to France or something. Some we're warm any way would just make it .
Was watching that wind and thinking hope you've got a tent! Don't know how far north you will travel but my favourite is Coll for the beaches, treat yourself to a stay at the hotel. I've transited the Caledonian Canal only the once, definitely a steep learning curve but great fun once the initial panic is over. Just putting on your next episode 😁
Locks are alot of work Thanks
They sure are
Great video Mark and Kellie! Well done Kellie on doing the locks by yourself, shame on the other yacht not even offering to help, personally, I couldn’t stand or sit there and watch someone doing the locks on their own. Did notice the other yacht was from a Royal yacht club.
Yeah we are lime you. Can't sit by and watch others struggling. We did see the blue ensign and wondered what this one meant, as I always associated it with skippers that are former navy
It would be the likes of Royal Ulster Yacht Club or Royal North of Ireland Yacht Club in Cultra@@LittleBoatAdventures
Nice couple 🙂
Thank you
Well done guys and well done Kelly
Aww thank you so much. Those locks are dam hard work
We did not enjoy the canal either - but why did you not just moor up on the rainy day and sit it out? I think we would have hung back and let the "unhelpful" boat go ahead and get a lock or two in front.
The weather was worse than forecast. We actually set off and it was nice but rapidly deteriorated. We did watch your Crinan vid before we decided to do it.
@@LittleBoatAdventures- the weather is _always_ worse than forecast 😄
Shame about the weather and lack of help on the locks but you both handled it well! Another great video guys! 🙌🏼😁
Thanks Kenny
Sailing means freedom (-ish). Fortunately the canal was closed due to insufficient water when I was near earlier this year - the skipper I'd hired to deliver me and the boat would have preferred the CC but happlily we rounded the MOK instead.
Oh really? Thats a shame. How did you find your sail around the Mull?
wow Solfar is looking great! Did you paint the deck and cabin top too?
Yeah we did it last winter there and should release the videos of it at some point. Not sure people lime the DIY stuff.
I'm a fan of the DIY and sailing
Love this video really shows a learner like me what it can get like out there and leaning also from the comments i have a 25 ft westerly been working on this year so hopefully be on the water next year so need all advice i can get lol
Thanks for watching the videos. Glad you are getting something from them. Westerly are good solid boats. You'll have the best time on the water.
The north and south beaches at the northwest of Gigha were favourite anchoring spots of the late queen when she used to sail up there.
That's an interesting fact. We didn't know that. I can see why she would have went there.
Amazing, you brave sailors! Thanks for your lovely video. Including the eased lock entering. 🤙🏻
Thank you very much for your kind comme t ❤️
Nice video. I noticed you had the windvane onboard but didnt appear to use it. Is it ok?
Yes it works the best. Sometimes we don't set it up for short sails on the lough as there's so many islands to navigate around and we do like helming the boat too
@LittleBoatAdventures thanks. I was looking at getting one. Have fun!
@@stephenreardon2205 they are a great edition. 👍
Interesting out of all the sailing channels I watch, your the first one that's filmed actually going into the first lock of the Crinan canal. Good video, looking forward to the next one.
Haha thank you. We thought someone might get the benefit from the next video with the locks as we had never done them before and struggled to find good videos to help prepare us.
Beautiful island and lovely adventures! Great video guys 🫶🏻
Thank you Kenny 👍
It’s staggering how beautiful some of the beaches up that way are, and the incredible lack of people makes it a dream come true to many of us who don’t relish crowds and parking tickets. I love your videos, poised to become rather crowded I think. Please don’t start charging for parking though?
Yes absolutely beautiful, and not over run by people. We've only scratch the surface of these islands and will definitely go back for more. No parking tickets allowed 🫡
Great episode - we really enjoyed it. We were sorry to hear of damage to the boat, but it sounds like an instance of "being against a pontoon is not the best answer". We learned the hard way that open pontoons like Gigha are not the best solution sometimes, but a few years ago we would have been on the pontoon beside you. These days, we would look for a cliff to anchor under.
Thanks lady's. Once the wind trapped us there we realised we could have anchored at North Beach in far better conditions. The water was almost flat calm there. But we left that decision too late. Lesson learned. Thankfully not too much damage to Solfar though. Where are you guys wintering this year?
@@LittleBoatAdventures - Bangor as usual. In fact, we are moored up more or less were we where last year when we saw your boat 😄
Well done. Great fun altogether!
Thank you Clare. We appreciate the comment.
I cannot get past videos where people from Britain use the term 'skin fitting'. It just sends chills up your spine each and every time. Why that one country chooses to come up with it's own arbitrary term in sailing is beyond me, but it is creepy as all heck.
Alternative??
Love those movies i buy an old albin vega and started yesterday hope i can make a good sailing vessel from this one . ruclips.net/video/dGyBr4atrc4/видео.htmlsi=5CKTHLAI-XGJeUtS
With a bit of luck I aim to buy one of these during the next couple of years.
