- In this episode we leave Portpatrick to sail to Aran Island. Unfortunately some poor planning & some bad luck we don't make it.

I’ve run my Vega aground twice no 4 times in two years 😂 got pulled of twice had to wait on the lean twice . One thing I learned was really zoom in if using Navionics in shallow waters because one time I run aground the screen looked like I was just inside the channel but once I zoomed in it showed me quite correctly on the mud .
Thanks for the tip. We'll make sure to do that in future. Especially in unfamiliar places. Apparently there are two tips of sailors, those that have run aground and those that haven't yet run aground lol. Surely it's a right of passage? Lol
Really enjoying this
Thank you
Stuart in Ireland
Thanks Stuart we appreciate it 👍. Where in Ireland are you?
Hi Guys, Even the ferry’s avoid that bit of water at times, so give yourselves a pat on the back for pushing on. Best wishes for smoother passages in the future.
Thanks Niall, it was a baptism of fire for sure. If we'd have known that about the ferries we have definitely thought twice about leaving this day lol
Hi, I've been watching most of your episodes now and I'm really enjoying it. I'm buying a Vega in these days and are learning a lot from watching you videos. I've had motor boats for many years but this will be my first sailing experience. Best regards Geir Emil from Norway.
Hi Geir. Thanks for the lovely comment. Have you got your vega yet?
@@LittleBoatAdventures Hi, have signed contract an transferred money. I will take her home mid-May. Some preparations first. She's well taken care of, but it's a total lack of electronics..
@geiremilwestrum4663 excellent. I am jealous that you will be sailing in Norway. That is our dream to sail there. If you ever want crew let us know 😁
It would be great to have a skilled crew to teach me 😊
Good video❤
Glad you enjoyed!
Love this video really shows a learner like me what it can get like out there and leaning also from the comments i have a 25 ft westerly been working on this year so hopefully be on the water next year so need all advice i can get lol
Thanks for watching the videos. Glad you are getting something from them. Westerly are good solid boats. You'll have the best time on the water.
Coreswall point aways a chop there with the wind /swell over tide. 👍 great video.
Aye she wasn't pleasant at all
Great to see a small yacht blog. really enjoyed it. I have a Hurley 22R and you guys have put me to shame as i only potter in my local harbour area.
Hey. Sorry for the late reply. Happy new Year to you.
The Hurley has a good reputation. I've watched a guy on RUclips sail a Hurley 27 around the world single handed.
I think the hardest thing to do is trust ourselves that we are compitent enough to do bigger sailing trips. We can have faith in our boats, but maybe not in our own abilities. That's why it's taken us a few attempts at getting over to Scotland. Good luck with the sailing 👍
I haven't had this experience yet, and I worry about it, so it's nice to see you survived!
Thanks Edward. It was stressful for sure, but feel we needed that experience to toughen us up a bit 😊
Mark and Kellie don't worry you will get to arran yet, and you gave it a good shot. The vega are a very strong boat and safe in rough water. Any time we cross to NI from the Clyde we head either straight across the north chnl or first leg to sanda and then cross on favourable tide to either Glenarm or Bally castle. 12hrs from Cumbrae to Glenarm or b castle direct.
Another great video guys and good to see youse again.👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you, we really appreciate that. We can't wait to explore the west of Scotland. So many amazing looking Islands and great people. We'll maybe get a drink and catch up if our paths cross on this side or your side of the water 🤞
I do think you'll eventually catch up with Sligeach, he's the slowest boat in the GLCC. Until he puts the sails up!!! 👹
@@eff901 🙈🙈🙈👹🙉🙊😂😂😂
Wind windows are hard to judge, I terrible at it! Great Vid
Yeah we really need to improve on that lol. Thanks for watching the video, we really appreciate it
It's great that you document all this cos I'm sure it's representative of many people and reassuring for those that have, or will, face similar issues and choices - you made the right one. Also must be good to know the boat itself was happy crashing through those waves, no leaks or bits falling off!!
Yes definitely good to know that the boat is capable even if the crew aren't so much haha. We hope at least someone might benefit from our mistakes anyway. We hope you are keeping well 😊
I loved portpatrick did u see. Any work started on that bridge To Ireland ! We went over from troon to arran lamlash was nice open late !
Njoi ur video s .
@@Alan13Mac yes it such a lovely wee place. Haha no sign of a bridge yet. I'd say it will be a long time before it happens if at all.
The joys of sailing guys. Dust yourselves down and come back stronger. People need to see the problems that you come across. I, for one, appreciate it.
Thanks Bob, we appreciate that. We try to keep it 'warts and all' kind of sailing as we are learning and it might benefit someone out there. Hope you are well 😊
@@LittleBoatAdventures yes we are all well here. Have a great Christmas and New Year.
@@bobblack4048 glad to hear it. Have a Merry Christmas 🎄
Been looking forward to this one and wasn't disappointed. I love your honesty. Fair seas do not make great sailors, or words to that effect. For me, work /sailing timescales meant that we'd be out sailing when normally we wouldn't...... As long as it's fun..... Keep them coming!!!
Yes we are the same. Due to our shift work we have to sail just when we can, so that means we have to learn to cope with whatever the weather is doing when we get time off lol. We are enjoying the learning for sure
Always a major concern when the engine is less than ideal. We’ve a Beta marine kabuto last year developed a water leak replaced O ring that helped but still not perfect ended up replacing cool water pump completely. Best wishes for the Christmas season from Yvonne and John aka the crew of Wavedancer
Hi guys. Yes the engine worked hard that day and I must have just amplified the leak issue. Not ideal when you are newbie sailors in unfamiliar places. We hope you both have a wonderful Christmas too 🎄
Nice video! That looked tough, even on video! Would it have been a bit better motorsailing? And i'd close the garageroof in those seas ;-)
I like how you cope with the slight unfortunate circumstances. Hope you keep your spirits up ;-)
Thank you. We probably shod have turned off the wind and motor sailed. We were just worried about the tide turning and getting stuck out there even longer lol. We took a big risk leaving that garage door open lol but thankfully managed to stay dry some how.
Been looking forward to seeing how you got on mark. Great we video. And far play to both of you. How long did you go away for then
Thanks Alan. We had a full week off to do this trip, but the weather cost the days to slip away without being able to get too far. We'd probably have needed 2 weeks to comfortably do all we wanted to do. Damn UK weather
@@LittleBoatAdventures time Flys away when boating is this country weather is the big thing and going out at sea well you seen what's happens. My hat goes off to you both. I would love todo something like this even to the tt for the bikes. You must planed for next year
when i saw you in the cockpit i was thinking, that looks like my ballad, then i realised its the vega!
Two great boats, rhe ballad and Vega 👌
Those waves never look as big on video as they are in person. It’s worse when you have the waves without the wind as you don’t have the power to push through it as well.
We 100% agree. Cameras just can't pick up how big they are.
Hi, how come no main up? Would've helped with steadying her.
To be honest we were worried about going forward to the mast to raise it in those conditions. Not something we had been used to. We also were worried about the boom swinging wildly with those waves and swell.
@@LittleBoatAdventures i'd recommend, if you know your motoring anyway, and it was 11knts wind, get the main up, even with a reef in if you wanted, keep her centred, makes quite a difference for stability. 👍⛵🌊
@@Jj-ff9vq Thank you for the tip. We'll definitely give it a go next time. There's sure to be more of that knowing our weather here haha
@@LittleBoatAdventures im not too far away, down at Holyhead, can get interesting around here in WoT conditions too 😲
My comment seems to have disappeared. Perhaps YT deleted it because it contained a link to the Met Office? Anyway what I said was: The seas up around Coreswall Point can be nasty, so you were probably just unlucky. But it was still an adventure 👍 BTW - in case you are not aware, the forecast information for "sea state" is really meant for quite sizeable boats and "Moderate" means a wave height of 1.25m to 2.5m
I have left the link out this time
Thanks guys. We appreciate info and will be sure to use it to better passage plan in future 🙏
I hope your boat didn't start smelling like diesel fuel.
It did Charles. For a while anyway. We thankfully seem to have got. It away now.
Should had you hatch shut ànd been way out to sea to close to land there on Winward shore be no bottom there so your anchor be no good of eng gave up sayt out get better winds and gave self time
Thanks John. You are right, these are things we are quickly learning the hard way. We are learning a lot from peoe comments on the videos so we appreciate it
@@LittleBoatAdventures listen your out there I hope be at sea next year. Some times if you don't want to tax your engine turn so wind and tide suits you better even if its backwards better have good sail then sitting worrying if your going make it look at others how they got from a to b and everywhere else to get there OK. Have 5 opstion wer to go. Love j
