Keep you chin up mate, better to find these things now tied up than to find them all 10 miles of the coast. Its like buying a second hand car, you always find something that isn't quite right. Plus you are getting to know the boat inside and out. Just minor niggles👍
Well said, better to find out now! 👍👍
Engine problems are the common theme on almost all sailing channels. I'm inspired by How To Sail Oceans channel. He's been around the world without an engine. Even now he just has a small outboard for getting in and out of harbors.
You need to set up lazy jacks for your main, not only will it prevent the sail cover from falling down but and more importantly it will stop the main from falling down all over the place and also should make it way easier to raise and lower the main.
Until you install lazy jacks, you can always use sail ties to wrap the sail cover to the boom, just make sure you keep lines such as the out haul and reefing lines clear. Then you’re all good to go sailing.
At the end of the video he addressed that. He added a jack stay, then commented on how much easier it was lowering the sail with "jackstays and a sail bag, even if it's half jack stays"
True but equally my comments make sense regardless, as only installing half a set of lazy jacks is not as good as installing a full set. Also my comment re tiring off the boom bag to the boom also is a good handy hint.
I simply LOVE that you uploaded to show how things REALLY go!! Thank you!!
Sailing tomorrow!!! that is what we are talking about. Have fun.
Water in your house isn't a huge problem, you falling down that hole will be a huge problem, try to makd it a habit to always close the companion way hatch...ask md how i know this...
Also, your reefing lines looked a bit tight, slacken them off more before raising sail
This is honestly one of my favorite channels.
Keep cracking at it. You've come heaps far so far.
At least you keep it real instead of all sunshine and daisies
Put marks on the main halyard where it should be in the clutch at the reefing points. Then you can ease the halyard to the mark, engage the clutch and pull in the reef. Hope you get sailing soon 👍
It’s refreshing to see a video when things don’t go right. Hang in there your day is coming! How’s your day skipper course going?
That mast damage is from the salt water being held against the aluminum from the inside masts are supposed to be anodized to help prevent this kind of corrosion but maybe the friction of the salt running up and down rubbed away the hard anodized finish then it slowly corroded I would install a big stainless steel splice plate over that damaged area before I went to far away from shore then reinstall the sheet inlet guide plate or better yet run an external halyard set up.
You’re in good company, Terry. It’s not a home or boat project until you’ve been to a hardware store three times and delayed a day! 😊 Great video, glad to see you pressing on.
With the reefing line issue, the clues were there... take a look at 9:10 into the video. The knot wasn't done up. In time, I'm sure you will learn to spot these little things, and sailing will go much smoother.
Well spotted!
Where there are only 2 reefing lines it is possible that these are not in the same place as if they were the first two of a 3 reef system. For example, with three reefs they might be installed at 12,24,36 percent, but this two reefs they may be at 16 and 32.
These are all fixable issues so don’t let them get you down. You have a great boat there and more things to fix means more videos for us 👍
Well done Terry it's a learning curve and your doing well I think the business with screw could happen to anyone and the sail that was waiting to happen but you was moored up and was able to sort it weather is crap at the moment uk so be careful when you go sailing 😊😊😊
Learning curves are always steep and learning the hard way makes the curve jagged but it's all still learning !
You are getting there Terry ! 👍
LAZY JACKS ....Jack stays run along the deck to clip on to in bad weather
Aw, bad luck 😔
Hope the weather lets you sort out the sails soon 🤞
To make progress on these jobs, in England, at this time of year, you have to remember there is no such thing as bad weather just the wrong clothing - get your could weather clothing on and crack on.😉
When I bought my boat it'd been on the hard for 18 months and the mainsail wasn't very willing to go up. Various unguents get recommended - think I might've sprayed PTFE all over the slidey things and on the track as far up as I could reach.
That’s life 2 steps forward one back then trip over the line and fall on your face. The trick is laugh get back up coil the line up and move on.😂😂
Don't get down about it, it would have been way worse if it happened out of the marina! It's all new to you, you have to work out all of the bugs -- better to do all of this is the safety of the marina than in the open water! It's not just you ... I just spent a week changing out a snowmobile track, main bearing assembly, speed sensor, speed sensor gear (last one was chewed up when bearing went), inner bearings and seals on the jack shaft, battery and starter solenoid (had to remove dash, wind screen, ignition switch, 12v aux socket, air box (w/sensors and multiple hoses)! We all go through this stuff ... but now that it's all done ... when the snow comes I will be ready!!! You will be ready when the opportunity to sail comes along!!!
Suggest you always turn off the sea cock to the engine when not in use as a precaution against engine water leaks. The Volvo Penta has a number of components with dissimilar metals steel, brass, aluminium etc. the green paint is specially designed to provide earth protection so you need three coats minimum on your water pump to stop the screws and threads corroding. Surprised the cam was worn as its only rubbed by the impellor.
You must remember that with boats there's no A B C it's always A To Z. Just walking from the cockpit to the bow will never be straightforward so every job will always throw up other jobs. Once you accept that you can relax and get on with the jobs. I always approach jobs ready for the curve ball. Sometimes, but only Sometimes a job is all it is and you can sit back disappointed having set aside six weeks to change the joker valve in the heads when it only took five minutes. I had a reefing line come out of the boom and with no mouse line in situ I had to remove the boom end then revit it back after. Now that was a job
Saw you walking to your new job yesterday morning, hope it’s going well for you 👍
Well Terry ,we waitng you in Med.
You get a new boat. Looks different. But very nice looking.
I expect someone will have a not terribly expensive idea for the mast at the main sheet. I'm sure you will be finding bits and pieces that need improving every time you look for the next few months but you should be able to day sail in short order and go for a proper trip in a few months. Life is gooder.
It's a learning experience right? Knowledge earned.
Brother ,,,
Do you ever just get the deep down feeling that a really Cool Sprinter Van might be far more enjoyable for you ?
Traveler of Land Yacht instead of .......
Well , I dunno man ...
I would really like to see you laughing and happy soon.
Nah, I love it too much!
Stich in time saves nine , never think its you that's screwed up , just putting to rights the last owners neglect and at the end of the day you have a better boat than what you bought 👍 .
I thought the camera was going to go splash! 🙈
No. That's not idiotic, the guy who filled his water tanks with diesel was idiotic. You're just "working through things" LOL
Ahh that is an easy mistake to make I wouldn't beat yourself up over it it is such a tiny detail I think anybody even a mechanic could make that mistake. Just be glad you learned this while you were not out in the middle of an ocean with no spares and you needed to motor to avoid bad weather or something like that.
It's all good, your making progress
I’ve had a laugh. Thx
Sails are in good nick x
Patience, patience my friend. This is just a small bump in the road. You can overcome anything.
Are you keeping the boat or did you get a different one
This is a different one, the last one was too much work 👍
All I can say is a good job you weren't in a gale of wind doing the reffing 😅
Exactly why I did it at the dock 👍
You are saying jack stays? Do you mean lazy jacks?
That's exactly what I mean 🙈😂👍
I enjoyed this content.
A tadge of silicone grease on that mast track
Long live Fin.
Awesome youtube dude :)
Cheers!
You did a job if life was easy you would be board
