    You made the right call - in more ways than one. A more experienced captain might have been able to return without engine power, but you made the safe choice - and I firmly believe that the safe choice is always the right choice. It might be slightly embarrasing to ask for a tow when you're on such a fine sailboat, but it would be so much worse to end a viral clip on RUclips if you crashed your boat trying to make it back on your own... I'm sure the rescue crew join you in being thankful that no one was hurt and that nothing (except a bit of pride) was damaged. :-)

      Thanks Thomas appreciate that. Yes I am still learning and as much as my pride to a little hit, everyone was safe and that's what I'm happy with. There will always be next time, taking the lessons we've learned from this to do better 🙂

    Great video. My last time out sailing (only my third time sailing) I also had to be rescued. Had moored on an island on lough neagh for the night and the following morning the outboard wouldn't start. It was embarrassing but much like your experience r.n.l.i were fantastic and it wasn't a bother to them. Look forward to the next one 👍🏻

    • @LittleBoatAdventures
      @LittleBoatAdventures  3 года назад

      Thanks Adam. I guess these things are very common to these guys and it's no bother to them. It's great that they are there if we need them.
      How's the sailing going then? Are you still in the water or haed out?

      I have a trailer sailer so its currently on the trailer at home. Outboard is away getting fixed at the minute. I now have a berth at kinnego marina on lough neagh so when it opens again I'll drop it in there and hopefully get back to it so I can learn some more. Every day is a school day on a boat 👍🏻. I will definitely be mindful of this after watching your video glad it ended safely for all involved 🙏

    The hardest lessons are the best learnt so no harm done... apart from your wallet! You mentioned at one point you couldn't tack due to the strength of the wind and I guess this is more of an issue with longer keel boats. My experience is with dinghy's and a little bit on fin keel yachts, but one thing that may help... well two actually is firstly make sure you've got some speed but second as you tack, back the jib... i.e. don't release the jib sheet until the last minute so let it back fills the sail as this helps to bring the nose around. May be worth trying it in normal conditions to see how it feels. Apologies in advance if this is a case of "teaching grandma to suck eggs".
    Cheers for sharing and the RNLI guys are great and probably enjoy a relatively easy rescue every now and then! :)

    Nice vid! Been there done that, although I realised it was a line around the prop. It sometimes help to put it in reverse for a split second to loosen it and pull it out. Works great with outboard engines too. :-)

    Well a lesson well learned. I dont know the depth you were in I know some people that stow all lines and open the anchor locker on the way out just incase they need to set it. Also always look for your safe zone going in and out. Thank you

    • @LittleBoatAdventures
      @LittleBoatAdventures  3 года назад

      That's great advice. Thanks. I'm not sure what the depth was. I was considering tossing the anchor out but think the scope would have let us hit the marina wall 😬

    Please don't misunderstand this comment but when I watched the first couple of your videos you mentioned safety. As I watched further I noticed that your control of lines wasn't very good. When you're done with a line you really need to stow it securely. Not just because of the possibility of stopping your prop but a far more serious issue. That issue is going for an unscheduled swim!
    I'm sure if you've done your Day Skipper theory you'll remember that your chances if you go overboard are pretty crap! According to Wikipedia 2 people a month fall overboard and between 17 and 25% are rescued.
    That means 75 to 83% are not. Pause and think - if 2 a month go over one will die. The chance of the other not dying is not good either. So no unscheduled swimming!
    Keep those lines under control and fix jack-lines ASAP.
    In another vid you asked about an EPIRB or PLB's. I'd go for PLB.
    Take care.

    • @LittleBoatAdventures

      @@LittleBoatAdventures there is no time to think before engines you would club haul anchors throw one out and then row one away from the boat and then slowly haul yourself into sea room. In fog no wind and the engine conked ,it saved me from becoming part of the ghost train on Brighton pier.two anchors are better than one,the tide off Brighton waits for no man

  • @SailingYachtSaltyLass
    @SailingYachtSaltyLass 3 года назад +1

    Now you know why the phrase "ship shape" exists. 😉 If you get an engine problem, go to the nearest marina or safe spot. To knowingly undertake a journey across the North Channel with a damaged boat would be insane so I am glad you did not try it and as for the weather forecast always add 1 or 2 Forces to the forecast or look at the GUST forecast as it is a more reliable indicator.
    Do not flog yourself about the line round the prop. No harm was done and the RNLI would rather come out and tow you rather than be picking your bodies and wreckage off the seawall. We ran over our anchor line and tangled our prop and got towed by the RNLI. It happens all the time.

    • @LittleBoatAdventures
      @LittleBoatAdventures  3 года назад +1

      Thanks guys. It really was a silly mistake and I've learned my lesson.
      Thanks for the advice on the weather. You'd think I'd now not to trust the weather in our wee country lol. I couldn't believe how much the wind direction varied from the forecast either 😕.
      The RNLI are amazing, like you say they'd much rather tow us in than a worse alternative.

      @@LittleBoatAdventures - we where going to Scotland last summer. The wind was forecast as "Southerly 3 to 4" but we got Northerly 6 gusting 7. We hid in Larne Lough overnight and it was lovely in there. We slept like logs...
