    If you were the rear gunner in a Ca.2 or Ca.3, you definitely would want a safety harness or something similar, to insure you did fall over the rail into the rear propeller!

    The Austrians built the best Albatross D.3 of the war.They did not have the lower wing failure problems because they strengthen the lower wings and they had much more power for download engines than the german mercedes. Another interesting point is albatross.Also ended up building the fokker D7 and folker didn't produce blueprints.So albatross had to produce reverse engineered blueprints and produced better quality fokker D7 with none of the quality control problems Fokker had. they also were lighter weight

    It is such a beautiful plane. I've been really diving into the pioneer era and the Taube was probably obsolete in 1910, forget 1914. Compare this to the 1914 Curtiss Jenny which was only intended as a primary trainer yet years ahead of this.

    In response to the 1914 Gordon Bennett Air Race, Gustave Delage of Nieuport undertook design of a new and relatively small machine. This craft, which he christened the Bebe (Baby) on account of its size, was built in only four months. It featured conventional wood-and-fabric construction with highly staggered, swept-back wings. The lower wing was slightly shorter than the top, possessed only half the surface area, and was secured by distinctive vee struts. The racer was fast and demonstrated a good rate of climb with superlative flying qualities. Because World War I canceled the air race, the Aviation Militaire (French air service) decided to adopt the airplane as the Nieuport 11 scout.

    Certain mono planes are manageable, certain monoplanes have definitely perished. The Fokker DVIII Bruno Stachel flew had definitely failed.

    Wasn't the lower wing problem of the D.III and worse D.V one of aerodynamic flutter, mostly due to the V-Strut allowing relatively unimpeded twisting, and a spar not stiff enough in that regard?

    11:12 Firstly the replacement Schwarlose was the 12/RM16 (M16 was a cavalry weapon similar to the land service le MG 08/15 in Germany -compared to the so called "Sandau" the aircraft variant of the le MG 08/15 with the perforated barrel jacket) but importantly Schwarlose M 07/12 functioned in the Alps at elevations at least up to 3000 metres and at equally cold temperatures and far worse weather conditions. The chances are the problem with KUK aircraft Schwarlose at altitude had more to do with failures of the interrupter gear, and possibly water being driven into the fabric belts causing swelling and thus stoppages -a problem less common in land service as crew were disciplined to prevent these belt problems -and a fighter pilot can't access belts to prevent ingress of water in flight.

    Main problem and difference between "spandau" LMG 08/15 and the Schwarlose 07/12 was weight the LMG 08/15 weighed 12 kg with a dry slotted barrel jacket, whereas the 07/12 weighed 20 kg (dry, later M12R16 had the water jacket removed, the Schwarlose barrel jacket did not support the muzzle which was the case in Maxim type) hence the tendency to fit single guns rather than twin -the Schwarlose being nearly twice the weight, in addition the Schwarlose being a blowback bolt design was very difficult to sync to a high rate semi-auto fire to fire though the propeller arc. The LMG 08/15 being a closed bolt system that was amenable to a high rate semi-auto fire, it was far easier to sync. The Schwarlose is NOT an open bolt weapon, the firing pin only is held back on release of the trigger the bolt feeds a round from the tray with a squirt of oil into chamber and it sits there until the trigger paddle is again pushed forward or the end of firing / clearing procedure is enacted, which is 1). set safe (locking the trigger bar), 2) remove the belt, 3) rack the operating handle twice - the first clears the un-fired round in the chamber and that allows the round sitting in the tray to chamber and a second throw of the op. handle clears this second round, allowing the weapon to be closed down safely, This is a standard operating procedure for the majority of closed bolt Machine Guns, a few only require a single throw of the op handle to clear the chambered live round in the weapon. Open Bolt weapons such as ZB and BRENs only require the removal of the magazine, a visual inspection, or in dark conditions careful manual release of the bolt/op rod group to make safe, but in either instance closed bolt or open bolt types -range safety must be adhered to, especially with closed bolts systems which may "cook off" the round in the chamber after prolonged firing.

    Is it true that that before the industrial revolution, aluminium was more expensive the gold per ounce? Apparently it was so expensive to make it cost so much in energy to make it was super expensive, there was a Roman alchemist who discovered aluminium and showed the Emperor several ingots of it, but it never took off for some reason if I'm not mistaken, er am I?

    Whitehead made his flight 2 years before the Wrights and his flights were witnessed by 33 newspapers from around the world. Witnessed by 12 who signed legal documents attesting to his achievements. His longest flight was one and a half miles. He had all the talent and training to make his aircraft. He sold French Gliders for a living and learnt his motor engineering as a mariner aboard ship. His aircraft was recreated in exact detail and it flew beautifully. On the other hand the Wright resorted to deception and underhand tactics, joining in a conspiracy with the Smithsonian to rubbish Whiteheads achievement and proclaim only the Wrights, this contract gave the 'Flyer' to the museum, with the proviso should they acknowledge Whitehead in any way the Flyer goes back to the Wright family. Further the despicable Wilbur wrote a cruel and dishonest book about Whitehead which was utterly false attempting to protect his claim. It should be noted the Wright flight distance was also falsely claimed as can be seen from photographs of the time as nothing more than a hop. It is now acknowledge by the scientific community Whitehead was the first to fly a powered aircraft under control. Trumping the Wrights bogus claim by 2 years.
