I thought they dropped handheld bombs up till world war one? Haha first time I heard about this event crazy guys I've seen pictures of the balloons they didn't mention anything about a duel though. Edit: by pictures I mean hand drawn ones obviously not photograph photographs
Early aviation, as exemplified by the Italo-Turkish war, involved reconnaissance and light bombing. This particular duel is quite famous, though to be honest I'm rather skeptical. The only source I'm aware of is the news article I was reading, and given that the French and English were at war, I'm somewhat dubious. Technically, of course, there's nothing impossible about it as long as the participants were willing to spend the money.
