  • It is a little known phenomenon, but the quality of an early aviation pioneer’s moustache goes a long way towards predicting their success. In this video, specially released on April 1st, I examine this under-appreciated circumstance.

This is truly inspired! Now I realize the reason for my father shaving his moustache was because he had retired as a US Air Force fighter pilot and no longer needed it.

Glad you enjoyed it. I had fun putting it together. But you've raised an interesting point. Perhaps next April 1st I should do something on aviation pioneers after they shaved.

You are someone who has a great channel... I found it in the past week and it is fantastic.. this channel does for airplanes what drachinifel has done for the warships of pre 1950 era. Thank you for your work.

A moustache is also a great trim indicator in an open cockpit aircraft.
Most early aircraft didn't have trim indicators in the cockpit.
If you felt the wind on the left side of your face, you needed more left rudder pedal.

I should have thought of that. I did consider including some of the pre-20th century pioneers, but that would have caused the joke to overreach.

@@rutabega2039 But Daedalus, his father, is often depicted as being bearded, and it was he who designed and built and flew the wings with which he and Icarus escaped Crete.

It is not so much inactive as on hiatus. I damaged the tendon in my shoulder, which has made using a keyboard significantly painful. Unfortunately only time will repair it.

Face fungus? I resent that ugly expression of beardophobia! Facial hair, and in particular, the beard, is a glorious thing, a declaration of puissance, of superiority and dominance; comparable to a lion's mane! Face fungus indeed! You should be ashamed.

The success of a small minority of aircraft engineers, builders, and pilots -- those who were handicapped by bare faces -- may be explained by strength of character, and their exceptional ability to overcome obstacles.

Having been aware of the term "face fungus" for the last half century, I find the ignorance of the concept most alarming. What do they teach kids at school nowadays?
Personally I am undecided on the true function of a 'tache in the pioneering days.
Firstly, when working in an engineering environment, and rags are not readily to hand, a 'tache is a convenient device for removing oil and grease from your hands.
Secondly, when flying at altitude, a larger, grease-laden 'tache will stiffen and can be shaped to produce an aerodynamic structure capable of acting as an extra wing and so provide the extra lift needed in a dogfight.
Hope this could provide further support for the need for this much neglected item of facial engineering in the early days of avionics.
