  • The Hanriot HD.1 is the epitome of a forgotten aircraft. A neat little single-seater biplane fighter of World War 1 that saw service with the Italians and Belgians from late 1916 until after the Armistice. Successful, but largely forgotten, this is its story.

That's a really nice pic of an air cooled Vickers at the 5:30 mark.

"In fact in appearance it looks a bit like a cross between the Sopwith Pup and the Sopwith Camel". But note that the Pup wouldn't be introduced for another three months and the Camel for another year after the HD.1 ...
So it would perhaps be more appropriate to say that the Pup and the Camel look like variations on the Hanriot HD.1

A very underrated aircraft. To bad, so much information was lost. Even for the more famous aircraft.

    As always, nice presentation.
    Did I hear "dry-hedral" somewhere? ;)
Now, when will you be making a clip about the HD1's "predecessor", the Ponnier M1? That would be great!

I did stumble a bit. Like all aircraft of World War 1 and previously, the Ponnier M1 is definitely on the cards.

@@Forgotten_Aviation Stumbling? So you *are* human after all? ;)
I'll be waiting impatiently for that Ponnier clip. I don't really know why, but I'm a bit in love with this major failure in early plane development. It was the main reason why the Belgian pilots hesitated to adopt the Henriot, as they had to endure the M1 previously. Plus, it almost cost the life of one of the greatest French pilots... Quite a story actually.

The Hanriot HD-1 made an appearance in the movie Lafayette Escadrille (1958).

@@Forgotten_Aviation The HD-1 may have made an appearance in The Sky Raider (1925). Dunno. Never seen that movie. But it appeared in Lafayette Escadrille (1958), too.

@@hlynnkeith9334 I've obviously checked, but the information I found indicates that a genuine Fokker D.VII was in that one.

@@Forgotten_Aviation You have to watch the whole movie. There is a scene in training when an Hanriot HD.1 taxis through. It is on screen for 10, maybe 15, seconds, then it is gone. But it is definitely an Hanriot.
