    I didn't want to spoil the whole interview with Willy Coppens for those that understand French so here is a bit more info:
    Willy describes how he attacked a Balloon that had a mannequin in it stuffed with explosives by the Germans. The plan was to detonate the charge (considerable amount) when Coppens comes close using the shock wave and debris to take out his aircraft. Coppens shot at the Balloon from some range and it started to go down. For some reason, the bugger on the ground in charge of detonating the explosives decided to blow it was it was descending with Coppens far out of range of the explosion. The whole fireball crashed into the installation on the ground & the assembled soldiers. GG Hans

    Eh, other countries may have had aces, but they surely never had a plane that can fly on its own, without a pilot! :D
    In 1915, in Austria-Hungary, a plane (cant remember which type) landed on an airfield, stopped, then, with the engine still running at idle, the pilot jumped out to speak with the ground crew. The plane had a consruction flaw that it was prone to throttle up because of vibration, and since the pilot wasn't in the plane to prevent that, it throttled up and took off on its own. They found the plane several kilometers away, it was out of fuel, landed on its own and it was undamaged. Later the plane itself was awarded with the Wings decoration for "his" deed :D

      @atomicsteameng 9 лет назад +3

      There was a similar incident when a Delta Dart had it's pilot eject for some reason, and him ejecting caused the planes center of mass to shift, and it landed on a farmers field.

      kenns9 Well, I guess that means that the plane has more skill than the pilot ;D

      WW1 is full of those weird stories

  • @queenofyeay

    In WWI observation balloons were in fact considered a much more valuable target than an enemy aircraft. I know this because of a story about an American flyer by the name of Frank Luke. Luke was only 20 years old when he enlisted in the US Army signal corps and was assigned to pilot training in September of 1917. In July 1918 Luke was deployed to France for further training. 2nd Lt.Luke saw his first aerial combat on August 16, 1918 and shot down a German plane, but he was not given credit for various reasons. Angry that his downed plane was not confirmed Luke made certain he would locate and document fully his future kills! Luke's squadron did not see much action over the next several weeks and moved to a more front-line airdrome. After only a handful of uneventful patrols and one denied kill, Frank Luke finally began to see serious action. Starting on September 12 (just shy of a year after his first flight) over the next seventeen days in September, 1918, and only just nine days of combat flying and ten missions, (only thirty hours of flight time), Luke shot down fourteen enemy balloons and four aircraft (seven planes according to some sources) this was a feat unsurpassed by any pilot in World War I. Unfortunately, on Sept. 29 after downing his third German balloon in a row he was struck by a single bullet from a machine gun nest a mile away and mortally wounded he straffed a group of German soldiers and managed to land his SPAD but the first person to arrive at the plane found him dead. For These accomplishments 2nd Lt Frank Luke was posthumously awarded the highest US medal for valor, the Congressional Medal of Honor.

    One thing I like about WW1 aviation was the honour and respect the opposing pilots had for each other.

    This is in response to your thought on Willy's amputation: I was stabbed and blinded in my right eye quite a few years back and I joke about it all the time. I think that people with similar conditions see it as a sort of badge of honor and pride. Thanks for the great video, I really want to see more Rise of Flight. See you in the skys!

    Willy's light hearted comment about being shot in the leg reminded me of an interview I saw with a F1 driver from the fifties. Asked about the high potential for death in the sport he replied " All us drivers had been in the war, The odds didn't seem so bad to us", I suppose it's all a matter of perspective, going to the shops seems quite dangerous to me.

    But the Hanriot was a French aircraft, yes, it was shipped to Italy and Belgium, but it was made by the society Appareil d'Aviation Hanriot... Funny fact, we (the french) didn't liked it, so it was never used by the Armée de l'Air, some of them were used by the French Navy , but that's it. ^^

    • @GrumblingGrognard
      @GrumblingGrognard 5 лет назад +1

      Yes, the Italians loved them and I have read they often fitted two MGs, one off center to the left (like the Spads) and to reduce the weight removed one of the two fuel tanks entirely.

    The Hanriot HD1 was a FRENCH aircraft, considered not suitable for French service, and supplied to the Belgians and Italians.

    Just another tidbit about the Hanriots: she was a specialist fighter like the German Pfaltz meaning you really had to fly/fight her the way she was meant to be flown/fought. She was also a safe plane for the pilots. The Sopwith Camel killed more of its own pilots than enemy pilots. The Nieuport had that nasty reputation of tearing itself apart in wild maneuvers.
    Gut gemacht Bismarck! Ich will mehr von Erste Weltkrieg Flugmachinen!
    Auch: der Fokker Dr.1 könnte nicht so gut rechts (wenn ich richtig erinnere) abbiegen wegen ein "Rotary Motor" (too much torque in one direction like the Later Nieuport and the Sopwiths) wenn du gegen ein fliegst immer rechts* abbiegen. Wenn du es fliegst und will rechts* gehen schalte den Motor aus (wenn du genug Schnelligkeit hast)

      NatesCast if you'd like I can reply with small transcript of the interview.

    • @WintersGhost243
      @WintersGhost243 9 лет назад +3

      NatesCast "A balloon burns exactly like a paper bag filled with air. it's the surface of balloon that catches fire. and when the hydrogen mixes with the oxygen, that's when there is a big flame. The balloon folds and tumbles like a smoking wreck. (He then talks about the soldiers, but I can't translate it fully). Just imagine being put in the basket of the balloon, and there is an explosive charge. The explosive is attached to an electric wire that is tethered from the balloon to the ground. With the escaping gas, and the explosive, it would destroy my air plane. You had to know exactly when to fire...let's say one or two shots. The Germans didn't think of some idiot at the end of the wire with a button, because when the balloon fell, it exploded about half way down. (I could be wrong on that last part, please excuse me). Sadly I had an incendiary round fired from the ground by a machine gun, the round hit my body, thank goodness I'm not an alcoholic. I was amputated the next day."
      I'm a little rusty on my French, but that should give you a pretty good idea what he said.

    That's not a triplane! That's a ... bi-tri-plane? :D Bismarck, Butcher of the skies! Here's a Question tho: What are the advantages of triplanes? I imagine they have enormous lift-to-weight ratios, is there anything else to it?

    • @Donnerino
      @Donnerino 9 лет назад

      ***** more lift but also more drag. Mono planes are superior in that way.

    • @Terrados1337
      @Terrados1337 9 лет назад

      I was wondering if the center of lift might actually very high and cause triplanes to be unstable but I guess that wasn't so much of an issue :D

    • @rignusjakobsen1339
      @rignusjakobsen1339 9 лет назад +1

      Terrados1337 the more unstable the plane the better as long as you have enough control to shove it in a direction.

    • @collinlingaitis8872
      @collinlingaitis8872 9 лет назад +3

      Mainly lift and maneuverability. Agile little devil the Dr.1 but they would get dominated by faster planes booming and zooming. That being said Werner Voss's final flight he had something like 6 British fighters attacking him and he held his own against them using the Dr.1's agility to keep them at bay. They could climb stupidly well too granted they had the energy to do it.
      The Germans usually flew them with a mix of other plane types. Albatrosses, Pfaltzs and the like. The Flying Circus tactic to put multiple plane types with different strengths and weaknesses to have the edge. (And because they didn't have enough planes of any single type to only field that type)

    • @ramjb
      @ramjb 9 лет назад +2

      Terrados1337 It wasn't, because the plane was purposefully designed not to allow for a big displacement of the CoL in the vertical axis. You'll notice biplanes always had the top wing well over the cockpit-fuselage lines (which caused some visibility issues, hence the use of top gull wings in some advanced biplanes as the late I-15 series). The mid-wing of the Dr1 triplane was mounted on the top end of the fuselage, however (much lower than usual), and the landing gear connector was a semi-wing on itself which also produced quite some lift well below the CoG to further compensate for the extra lift of the top wing (the Dr-1 was actually a Triplane-and-a-half because of the undercarriage "semi-wing")
