  • This is a quick guide to the Deperdussin 1912 Racing Monoplane, and its successor, the Deperdussin Monocoque. Both were ground breaking, and award winning aircraft and highly successful in their roles as racers.

Thank you for giving time to the largely forgotten Deperdussin 1913 de course. A masterpiece. Beschereau was, in my opinion, the Kelly Johnson of it's time. Dang i'm a fan of these two!

Outstanding! Best tie of Deperdussin to SPAD I have heard or read. My compliments.

Saw it today at LeBorget. Great museum and easy to get to. Airport still in use.

Amazing the progress that was made between 1903 and the outset of World War 1.

The latter aircraft looks very similar indeed to the Morane Type N 'Bullet', operated as a scout by both the French and the RFC in 1915-16. And my understanding is that the Fokker (and their Pfalz, Euler and SSW clones) Eindekkers were, in their turn, based on the type N. Doubtless, the later Bristol design was similarly influenced.
So these Deperdussin designs were seminal for this whole series of aircraft, for both sides in the war.

Actually "Bibliothèque nationale de France" could have provided you documentation on the matter. I found photos and articles from contemporary newspapers on its site.

I thought it was a Morane Saulnier N at first.

Excellent video. Looking forward to more on AD. It seems odd at the height of his company's success, he's taken out. And then, the company is reorganized with even more success. Could the story be that AD was forced out for power and profit?

It's more basic than that. Armand Deperdussin was a businessman rather than an aircraft designer. The company went bankrupt and he was arrested for fraud. The success of the aircraft was due to the designer, Louis Bechereau. He remained with the company when it was acquired by the consortium lead by Louis Bleriot, and reformed as SPAD.
