  • This is a short video showing what I believe to be the Model 2 & 3 helicopters of Raúl Pateras Pescara being flight tested in 1922 and 1923. The video has a creative commons license, and can be found on Wikipedia if anyone is interested in the original.
My identification in the video is based on the thumbnail picture which purports to show the Model 2 on the left and the Model 3 on the right. They vary slightly in the fuselage design, the nose-wheel and the cockpit, which is what leads to my identification in the narration.

It was completely unknown to me until I was reading up on the inception of the idea of torpedo bombers.

I think it was Eric Brown in "Wings on My Sleeve" who talks about relocating aircraft post WW2 and being sent to bring back two early heli's with no prior training. Incredible pilots to be able to learn a new machine like that by the seat of the pants!

Well you can sort of get a feel for what Pescara is trying to do, by flying tethered and working up. Not something I would care to try.

Tired of Drachinifel Naval history...flight is so much more interesting. If only your videos were longer.
    Thanks Jerry

I'm glad you are enjoying them. The channel is only just getting going, but the potential for expansion is definitely there.
