Datsun Z. L28 Rebuild. Shims and Bottom End Rebuild.
Great to be back.
Sorry for disappearing off the map for a while, as you know life has been busy.
in this episode I finally get the shims in under the towers to fix the rocker contact area. Then we get the bearings and rings installed and all back in again

Datsun Z. 280Z L28 Head Rebuild. 240Z 260Z.
Просмотров 4,8 тыс.Год назад
Hi Folks. So this ended up being a bigger challenge than expected. The head I bought was not great at all needed a lot of work. Then decided to chance going down the route of manually leveling the cam shaft. Dodgy approach but worked out. Now I'm going to reassemble it all and see how it matches up with the block. I might have to come back and install tower shims to get the exact height back ag...
Datsun Z. 280Z L28 Engine Teardown. 240Z 260Z

Hi Folks. It's time to strip down the L28 and see what I am in for. I'm hoping for just a quick check to see that all is in tolerance and reassemble. If I find any problems, then it will fix them on the go. I've been playing around with these engines since I was 14 but never did a nut and bolt strip down, so fingers crossed. Hope ye enjoy!

Hey Z Heads. After fitting the doors, I noticed that there was an issue with the dogleg. It was slightly misplaced but also the contour was incorrect. Time to get cutting. To all the Z Heads out there. Time to fit the R200 differential. Its a beefy job but I didn't foresee how the reinforcement interacted with drop links for the rear axle . Ended up reorienting these and reinforcing them to do the same job. This is my approach which I have yet to test on the road. Let me know if you would have done it another way? I enjoyed your series. Blessings
Cheers buddy!
Have you gone for good? This was by far the best Z build on youtube.
Hey how are you keeping. No I'm still here. Just the project put on hole with the arrival of my second kid. Hands full as you can guess. I will be kicking it off soon.
Congratulations! Look forward to it.
REALY ENJOYED THIS
Do they all come with shims already or is he adding it to the head ?
After you skim it, you need to shim it
I have been loving this series, I enjoy your editing and commentary style, keep up the great work!
Thanks Tyler!
We would love to see more videos from you and your build, maaan!!👍🏼🙏🏻❤️
Hope to have one coming soon
I have a 1971 240Z. I need to replace the slam panel, but I don't own a welder. I could do the other work and find someone to TIG/MIG it for me I suppose, but, there's other stuff on the list ahead of that. This week I discovered oil fouled plugs on two cylinders but they aren't next to each other. I feel like it's the valve guide seals. It's a freakin fresh rebuild (I bought it that way) and so I have to deal with that first. Your cylinder head vids were very helpful. My motor has a Stage II Schneider cam and I have NO IDEA what else was done during the rebuild....I have receipts, but they don't list the details, just the costs and generic "Rebuild motor" kinds of terms. So, now I have to get intake, exhaust and head gaskets. I just set the valves today, which will just be practice for after re-assembly when I do pull the head later this year. Anyways: Thank you! Honest vids. I like them.
Love this feed back. Yea I want to record it as I live it. Sounds like you have a nice build ahead of you. Keep me posted
Not gonna lie i was using this as my motivation and honestly a bit of a tutorial on how to do it myself, hopefully there's more to come, I'll gotta go buy that book for sure even if it is a little estranged at times.
Best of luck with it. I caught a couple of big mistakes in the book so make sure you catch where I mention these
Why did i think you sold this car. Great to see you are getting it back on the road. Just got a bit if rust removed from my car and back on the road. Dont give up.
Cheers Vinny. Hope to get back at it soon. Hands full with the kids but light at the end of the tunnel 😁
@@sparkiesshed3818 Life always gets in the way. Think I bought the Impreza 7 years ago and only now getting it sorted. And taken a year so far and actually looks worse then when I started. Never give up
Yeah I'm thinking that I don't want to touch it unless I'm enjoying the process.
@@sparkiesshed3818 Exactly, it's about the journey and not the destination. So don't move forward unless you're happy to.
what did you do about the crossmember that holds the gearbox? do you buy a custom one?
I split mine and welded it with a 25 mm offset . I'll have to do a quick short on this one
I just stumbled across this video, watched several of the Z restoration videos, actually. What happened after this video? It's like Sparkie just disappeared after making this video...
I'm coming back soon. Project put on pause with having two kids. But I have loads lines up and coming soon
You gave me the confidence to try this at home, thanks bro.
We are all chancers 😄
I would shim the cam towers up instead of sanding off. It helps keep the timing where it should be based on chain length.
Couldn't agree more. Hindsight is great!
Man Hope you get some more vids out soon
Me too. Sparkie junior has just arrived so I will have help soon
Wow thank you for such a detailed video. Will def find this useful for my repair.
Thanks for watching!
Hi there Sparkie...great video and really useful I've lost count how many times ive viewed trying to pick up tips on how to do this conversion. Ive now found a local gearbox place willing t do this conversion for me. Can I ask where you purchased your sealed bearing from please?
Hey. I just went down to my local bearing suppliers with the original one and they had it on the shelf. Happy days 😁. Where you located
@@sparkiesshed3818I'm in Derby, East Midlands. Thanks for the reply. 👍👊
great stuff :)
Good Gasooòoon!
That damper plate is factory mate 👍
It's mental 😀
Glad you’re back mate!!! Keep going!!!
Thanks buddy 😁
Love to see you back at it man. Can I ask, where do you but your parts?
Great to be back The bearings were from Fmic Performance. Polish Ebay shop. Genuine Nissan rings from Ebay again Globalavto in Bulgaria.
Nice to see the project to engine assembly. 🍃
Wait for the next episode 😅
I’m in the same phase brotha! Just yanked my crank 🤣 it’s perfect I just can hopefully hone cylinder 6 and clean it up and slap it back together!!
Fingers crossed for you man. The more you measure the deeper you go.
@@sparkiesshed3818 starts with getting it running and ends with a bare block, if you ever have a hard time finding parts lmk I have a Datsun boneyard friend over here..
This is a great channel, any updates on the Z?
Very soon. Sorry for the pause but content any day now
How's the car going?
Good. Been busy else where but should be getting it moving again now
what thickness sheet metal do you use? i'm just getting started on this repair. I'll need to pick up metal. Thank you!
I usually measure what I'm replacing and go with the next size up. Usually 1mm
awesome! i need to replace the same panel on my 260z also. thanks for the explanation!
Any time!
Awesome job!
Cheers!
Seam sealer usually works best over epoxy primer, not so well to bare metal.
That's great to know. It didn't play well on the steel unless it was roughed up!
Awesome mine need replacing on my 1975 z. Where did you get the lines ?
Off Amazon. Look up Clarik 3/16" X 25 Ft Cupro Nickel (Kunifer) Brake Pipe 1 Roll. Haven't fully finished the whole system but this is the one to get.
Alright dude? That baba keeping you busy? Hope all's good. Loving the channel. Keep her lit
She sure is. I'll have her out welding for me in no time 😄
Beautiful color choice. Loving the series. Keep up the good work. Cheers!
Cheers man. It's all painted up now so hope to post the episode soon
Great work Sir! Just found this page and very hopefully!! Keep it up!
Cheers!
Great content SiR!
Thank you!
Great video, I have to replace the same panel.
It's an enjoyable one to work on
Any thoughts on diff gear ratios?
I wanted to optimise acceleration so was lucky I got the high ratio. Some might like to quite the engine down and go for the lower ratio
Hey great video man! Thinking about doing this to my 280 after someone botched my rebuild... What was that solution you talked about to have the shifter in the same position as oem?
Yea I managed to rotate the shifter around 180 degrees. Means the stick leans forward but the knob ends up I a stock location. You dont need to modify the transmission well in any way. Only got the box raised into location and it seams to line up nicely.
I have to say you should of just skimmed the top of the head
Couldn't agree more. Sleep dept of having the young one didn't help. This process is for heads that don't have a flat plane upper section but works just fine anyway
very helpful. i'm going to have to make the same repair
Like thousands of others 😁😁😁
what kind of paint remover did you use? and, if you said it, i didn't hear, what did you use to prevent flash rusting? i just bought a '72 240Z, and i'm itching to get started.
To be honest I used brute force. Any of the strippers you get in Europe are limited in strength due to EU environmental legislation. They done remove shit 😃. Wire brush all the way
Did you have any issues with the front brakes? I think they are installed incorrectly, the bleeders are supposed to be on top of the calipers.
Well spotted. I even seen this happened to my another Z head and told him to flip them....... and then did it myself.
I’m also doing a R200 swap on my 73Z but I need some help, I got a 5speed from a zx and my driveshaft fits into it but it looks too small for my r200. Would you recommend buying a zx driveshaft?
To be honest I'm getting close to this stage but not quite there yet. I have the same predicament but with an s14 gearbox. Thinking of custom shaft myself
To be honest I'm getting close to this stage but not quite there yet. I have the same predicament but with an s14 gearbox. Thinking of custom shaft myself.
can you make your technical book available, I can't find any.
How to Rebuild your Nissan & Datsun OHC Engine by Tom Monroe. But be a little careful as I found a few mistakes. I'll be talking about it in the coming episodes.
I recognise the gloves 😂
Oooooh yeah!
good job man = no one will be as well as you on your own car = yes sir = do it all yourself !
That is so true. Not that I don't trust anyone else but definitely feel better knowing the exact ins and outs of it
Do you have a pinion bearing number? Also - did you change the bottom bearing or didn't bother? Thanks!
I just pulled the bearing and brought it to the suppliers. They measures it and that was it. To be honest I didn't cop that there was an inner bearing. Just looked like a bush, but i could be wrong. Oops!
Congratulations maaan!!! That’s the best thing in a man’s life is the love for there little daughter!!!💪🏼👍🏻🙏🏻❤️
Ah cheers man. And I couldn't agree more. We are very chuffed 😀
Always funny to see when german terms like schutz or schmutz get used in english. Usually its the other way around 😉
