He had confirmation bias. That whole time he is thinking he is on the correct downwind traffic for 17R and ignored the ATC and proceeded to land. He probably still didnt realize what he did wrong there.

When ur older than 65-70 yo, you should consider retiring from flying. At least carry a competent pilot in the other seat. And consider that a Duffy Boat would be more appropriate for one’s skills.

Very bold to fly a Cessna into NYC airspace. You have to be quite experienced to deal with one of the busiest airspaces in the world, competing with passenger jets approaching faster than you.

It frustrates me when controllers are distracting distressed pilots with fuel and souls questions. If I'm in such a situation, I'll be very abrupt. "Quiet, I'm busy." I know why they need to know, but there's a time for everything, and an engine out, can't make the airport, looking for a field to put down in is not a time to answer queries like "I don't know what full fuel for a Bonanza is, how many gallons or hours?"

If this guy landed he should pay this ATC guys mortgage.

Going from 1.5 hours on the fuel to a quarter tank is a huge screw up. Poor flight planning and a low IFR proficiency is a suicide attempt in IMC.

Congrats to the ATC - great way to de-stress a potentially fatal situation. For the pilot - you owe that ATC several beers (or equivalent!). I seriously hate hearing "I have 10% battery on my iPad and then no GPS". Get yourselves some power-bricks for at least 2x the flight time, and make sure they are charged. Or - don't use them and fly old school.
