Confusing ‘no delay’ with takeoff clearance and not confirming at the busiest airport in the world is wild.
I like how nonchalant ATC was about the whole thing despite this being a major metro airport.
GA is chill. no drama. he will get hammered very hard for what he did tho. dont confuse them being calm about it. poor guy
Regardless of what you think, unless you hear "cleared for takeoff", get clarification. Always better safe than to hear those dreadful words "possible pilot deviation"
I'm proud of myself (as a non pilot) to notice they didn't get clearance before the ATC confirmed it.
Ditto 🙋🏾♀️
It will never not be weird to me that GA aircraft in the US can fly to major capital city hub airports services by hundreds of RPT movements daily. In Australia whilst you technically *can* plan to fly your light aircraft into somewhere like Sydney, you’re going to be holding until the heat death of the universe and paying a home loan deposit as your landing fee so nobody really does. The utter chaos it would cause throwing an aircraft with a 70 knot finals speed in amongst all the turboprops, jets and heavies would be wild.
That was the reason when everything was nearly shut during the pandemic a few dozen GA aircraft organised a fly in to Kingsford-Smith. I presume they negotiated a deal on the regular landing fees.
@@Jimmer-Space88 and the US had a death rate 3.5 times higher than Australia, accounting for a massive 17.8% of all worldwide deaths from the disease.
It was FOUR YEARS AGO. Find something new to be a conspiracy theorist about.
His read back was wrong. She said "cross 8L, hold short 8R, no delay", and he read back "cross 8L, 8R no delay". Definitely mostly his fault, but controller has some blame here too.
Pilot:
- Possibly didn't listen to controller's initial instruction.
- Didn't read back controller's initial instruction properly.
- Made an assumption that takeoff clearance was given when it objectively wasn't.
Controller:
- Didn't catch pilot's erroneous read back.
- Could have used better phrasing. "Cross 8L NO DELAY. THEN hold short 8R" would have been a better phrasing, imo. It more clearly describes what the "no delay" was in reference to, and more clearly indicates that it's a sequence of instructions.
My heart sank when I watched him taxi on to the runway. I was lucky in my career to not have made such a mistake, but for the grace of God I sure could have.
"Cleared for takeoff" means that you are cleared for takeoff. Nothing else.
No delay was to cross the other runway... AND GET OUT OF THE WAY OF WHAT'S COMING.
It didn't cancel the Hold Short for the next runway.
This is a pretty common instruction.
Who else was screaming HOLD SHORT, HOLD SHORT! 😂🙈
A shame the controller buys this one also because they only had to say cross eight left then contact Tower. Since they gave him a hold short for eight right they had to get a read back. A “taxi to” clearance automatically has a hold short requirement to the assigned runway. Another clueless pilot ruins the day. Even with the controller not getting a readback, the pilot will still get deviated since they received no actual clearance onto the runway.
Why do you think the controller buys anything? Not sure what you mean by that.
@@oldRighty1 The controller issued a hold short instruction when she gave the crossing clearance, which she didn't need to. Once you say it, the controller is required to get a read back from the pilot to hold short. I doubt much will happen to the controller though, all things considered.
The whole point of a read back is that the controller is required to listen to it and catch discrepancies. Pilot gave an erroneous read back and the controller missed it / let it go.
I feel like the 2nd Tower controller, knew he was gonna do something crazy when she checked in with him 😂😂😂
Omg you never do that especially as a small aircraft at ATL. That could have been a disaster. The controller was very kind she could have tore him up. He definitely caught a deal on that unapproved takeoff.
Minnows messing around near the whales is freedom I guess, but not great for passengers who payed not to be killed that day.
"I just cant bring myself to go to Fulton....nor Hampton.... nor either of the two Peachtree.... I just HAVE to go to ATL. Its the one of the largest, busiest Bravo's in the universe & I dunno what I'm doing, but I expect everything will go just fine." 99% of the screw-ups are REALLY made before engine start.
Put the date of the incident somewhere please.
Yeah, this is old.
What are the likely outcomes for pilot deviation. I appreciate each one is treated in isolation.
1:59 I thought…
every level of ATC, all the recording that goes on, pilots screwing up is labeled as "possible." Why??
probably legal reasons, just like even if it's pretty clear a certain person committed a crime, until prosecuted, the news will say accused / alleged so they don't get sued if the person avoids conviction. it's "possible" until an investigation is completed
What does it mean to monitor the tower on "the upper antenna"?
Many airplanes are equipped with two communication radios. The best airplane radio configuration is for one communication radio antenna to be on the bottom of the airplane and one on the top of the airplane. The top antenna will get better ground communication while the airplane is on the ground since the bottom antenna is partly shielded by the body of the airplane. Sometimes the difference in reception strength is small, but critical at larger airports.
@@Jeff-zg5gm Many thanks, Jeff.
Yeah thanks Jeff👍🏾
Cognitive bias as work again.
Big yikes!
what is that little thing doing at katl.. thats prohibited. katl does not allow or handle GA traffic. you cant even be in their airspace!
Not true. KATL handles a lot of GA a/c and has an FBO (Signature Aviation).
@@Airships really.. i was lied to then. we were told to stay out of their airspace in general and all the clubs etc avoid it. GA as in fancy private jets sure.. ga as in your pipers etc i have genuinely never seen there. dekalb and cobb mccollum take all the ga traffic and then peachtree to the south.
Meh. No big deal.
