    The controller was a jackass. How could he control an airspace if he can’t even control his own temper? If he can’t control his temper then he shouldn’t be in this line of work. He could have gotten his point across in a much more civil and professional manner. I hope he received a reprimand, at the very least.

    This is somewhat old. They did end up firing this controller toward the end of 2023. In this particular case, the controller didn't leave it at this on-air altercation and tried to go after the examiner administratively. The examiner eventually won the battle through his connections at the SJC FSDO. This wasn't the only case with that particular controller and several of the flight schools / tenants at the SQL field had made several complaints about him over the years. SQL is also a contract tower, so they're not directly FAA employees. This particular examiner isn't known for his great bedside manner either (I know of multiple CFIs who won't send students to him anymore), but in this case he's right -- even though the applicant didn't quite follow the instructions, the controller was being very unprofessional in this and other instances.

    I’m a newer pilot. At my local airport One of the calls to enter the pattern is “over the new construction” which is a new housing development. My question is: how would pilots who have never flown to this airport know your location? And in a couple years when it’s no longer ‘new construction’ what then? I think all landmark position calls should be apparent on the aeronautical chart. Help me make it make sense.

    • @sandysmithvideos228
      @sandysmithvideos228 4 дня назад +3

      Exactly right. Unless on a VFR map, all position calls should be distance and direction from the airport. For example, "three miles north east of the ABC airport."

Saying "unfamiliar" would have clued in the controller who probably would have responded with "I'll call your base". Moreover, the pilot accepted the clearance having no idea where he was supposed to turn. I wonder if he passed his checkride? The dpe is there to observe in this case unless it becomes a safety issue. Some controllers are like this guy was, but accepting a clearance without understanding what it is can be very dangerous. This happened a few years ago but it's not the first controller fiasco here. I don't know if there was a change recently, but ATC at San Carlos Airport is NOT provided by the FAA- they use a private contractor.
    Those controllers are also known for their unofficial/local visual checkpoints and procedures. The hospital the controller is talking about is not depicted on any sectional charts, so it's just local knowledge that not everyone may know. They also like to create their unofficial departure procedures known only to "5 pilots sitting at the cafe" (the controller says that) which are "published" as the controller says on some NON-FAA website.

    The controller was correct, 100%.
    The student acknowledged the controller’s instruction to report or turn when over a legitimately used geographical checkpoint at this airport; every towered airport uses them and many of them are charted. If neither the student nor the examiner were familiar with the hospital’s geographic position, one of them should have promptly alerted the controller to that fact. The controller would then have simply proceeded to use another tactic and all would have been fine. As it turned out, reticence on the student’s part caused the controller to briefly be unwittingly “out of control.” Chaos and possibly grave danger could have
    ensued. Yes, the controller was within his rights to be “pissed off.”

      Pilot made a mistake, it happens - the correct response is to file a pilot deviation, not make it personal. Controller lost his composure, used frequency for entirely inappropriate comms, and became inattentive to the airspace while arguing on the frequency. There's so much wrong with the controller here that you would need a pen and paper to keep track of it all.

      Regardless of what the student should or shouldn't have done, the controller had no excuse not to be professional and civil. I would say to him to own it, like a man.
