Controllers can terminate flights for “safety” reasons, but this was unjustified. The CFI knew it and that’s why he was asking to mark the tape. I would have asked for a phone number on the ground.
That was an asshole attitude from the controller, totally unprofessional and totally unacceptable. He wasn’t working _that hard for a student,_ he was working as required in pursuit of flight safety for the airport, the flight school, the community and other users of the airspace. If he can’t cope with that, he needs to find a job he _can_ cope with.
i agree but also what an a hole, super unnecessary, he wasn't even working that hard. traffic to follow wasn't even a factor for that level of attitude
This controller is a total asshole. He should've apologized after the pilot mentioned they were looking into the sun so were having a hard time finding the traffic.
I don't think this was the first time for this controller. If memory serves, isn't this the same controller who got called out by an FAA examiner for his attitiude.
That one idiot controller just soured the student on all future interactions with atc. Stuff like this is why pilots hesitate to reach out to atc when they are getting into trouble. They wait until they are so deep in the shix there ain't no help for them.
This is true. I'm not an instructor but I advise all students to see ATC as non judgmental robots no matter how they sound. YOU pay them so they work for you. Don't hesitate to use them as a tool when needed even if they sound annoyed and nasty. When they get nasty I ask them for the Tower's phone number and follow up.
Unless there was a lot more that happened prior to this exchange, this controller needs to find another job that doe not require a little patience and understanding. "IF" this is all there was to this exchange the controller went from zero to 100 in a heart beat all because the pilot of 610SP, who was looking west into the sun, couldn't find the traffic ahead of him within a few seconds. That's ridiculous. The controller could have easily asked 610SP to extend the downwind another few seconds to ensure separation from the C150 ahead of him. That happens at our local airport all the time. I sincerely hope the instructor had a conversation with this controller. It was surely needed!
What an idiot controller. We all been there, nervous, new, and with the sun blinding the windshield. I am glad that the instructor took over the radio. Poor student.
For crying out loud, this jerk is not working traffic at LaGuardia! Obviously a guy who needs more training in sequencing and efficient communications so he doesn't stress himself out.
Wow, but this is a good example why I was happy to retire after 46 years as a professional pilot and have no interest in flying again! Controllers are over worked at times but this was ridiculous!
This happened Sep 26, 2023. From a webpage: "Just a few weeks earlier, it appears the same controller also had a run in with a Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE) on board another flight after the controller berated the pilot for not knowing where the hospital landmark was located." "San Carlos is one of many smaller airports that hire contracted air traffic controllers and not those from the Federal Aviation Administration. "
He’s only got 3 airplanes for cryin out loud! The controller is in way over his head! “Reduce speed?” To what? Seems he's more of an observer and much less a CONTROLLER!! He’s an embarrassment to my profession!
the guy is working for a full 8 hour... Yeah, and adapting to the students IS PART OF HIS JOB! He's litteraly saying "I'm working, but I don't wanna work with you because it doesn't suit ME."
Thats not the issue. it seems 4 planes is nothing BUT being by self in the tower for hours is. FAA needs to find a way to fix this issue as its very bad in california
Hey long-time pilots: Have you guys noticed that country-wide the ATC has gotten both shittier in quality AND rude-er over the last 5-6 years? Been doin this a while & I can't recall a single occasion over 30 years that I've heard shit like this, except 5-6 times over the last 5 years. Wtf is going on? FAA reduce their new-hire criteria? Less in Tower over-sight? AND ITS JUST WITH TOWER - Tracon is still great as ever it seems
So agree with your comment - have had two horrible experiences at KHND (Henderson NV), same thing, the controller whined that he was working both radios. I checked with numerous high level instructors and none of them could help with what I could have done better in similar situations. It is not a blame game but holy crap, no one wants to get yelled at for no reason and taxi to transient sweaty and shaking and wondering what you did wrong. It takes the joy out of flying for sure
This is a head shaker. I goes without saying that at some point during your day you're going to run into a person like this. Ego on display, arrogant and thinks a lot of himself. It's just unfortunate when you hear someone like that in such a critical profession.
Wow - some of the worst VFR Tower work I've ever heard! "Somebody" truly needs to address a situation where the tower is (apparently) under-staffed before a controller reaches the limits of their skills, abilities, and/or patience and melts down like that. i.e. "NOTAM: Due to staffing shortage circuit training will be limited to X number of aircraft until xx:xx" or something and then a discussion between FOBs and ATC managers. Soon!
ATC is paid to assist students, as well as everyone else. That student was handling things far better. If the tower is understaffed and can't handle traffic, then CLOSE THE AIR PORT!! lol
I think that the controller (apart from being a fatuous ass) works for one of those aviation services companies, that are contributing to the deterioration of the FAA.
And this is the problem I have with private contractors providing ATC services for lower density facilities. Notice how he said he was working by himself? Yeah, there are no minimum staffing requirements at ATC facilities such as this so the companies can save money by offering fewer controllers to staff them. Was he curt with the IP who wanted to confirm they could no longer train at their homebase that day? Yes, of course he was and I'm not going to excuse him for his behavior. The moral of the story is you get what you pay for.
Afaik, this is an old issue. Same controller who got mad at a DPE for telling him to take his rants against the student off the comms, and I think he's also the same controller who had to go to restroom while on duty. Looks like there's a severe staff shortage at the control tower.
This controller couldn’t handle one student not seeing the traffic? Extend the downwind to add the spacing desired. It’s that simple! This guy couldn’t handle controlling on VATSIM.
Nope, he still working at this tower ( ask me how I know 😂 ) and he does it again, there is one or two more vids about him and his low tolerance for students and pilots that are unfamiliar with the departure procedures of this airport, the icing on the cake is that he is the tower supervisor 😮

The controller (female) was SUPER busy and I was so impressed how organized and calm she was issuing directives to all of the aircraft. This guy only had 3!! You are in the wrong profession! Show courtesy and it will come back to you in spades!!!!!
Student Cessna or Concorde, that traffic controller is obliged to work as hard as necessary with both. If he has a problem working his 8 hours on his own then he should take that up with his bosses and not his customers who are paying his salary. Dude, if you were working for me snd spoke to a customer like that, you'd be out on your ass so fast your feet wouldn't touch.
This controller needs to be stood down and retrained. Thankfully the instructor in the 172 was as calm and professional as the student, while still making it abundantly clear to the controller that he wasn’t going to just roll over and accept that nonsense. Maybe the controller should try and find a small target, moving in 3D, while looking into the sun. Unreasonable, unprofessional, incompetent and therefore, sadly, unsafe.
If the traffic positions are accurate, he misstated where the preceding traffic was twice. He told 610SP the traffic was east of the cement plant when in fact it was west
This is a FCT (federal contract tower program) site and the contractor is (was?) Serco North America. They are just your typical bottom of the barrel FAA contractor who asks the impossible of the staff in terms of hours/workload in order to make a profit from these low bid type vendors.
