Hi! I'm Michelle. Welcome to my Meadow where I am learning and sharing my gardening adventure on a 1/4 acre (1/10 hectacre) suburban lot. I'm not an expert gardener, but I am learning, growing, and sharing the good, bad, and the ugly that learning to garden has to offer.
Face To Face With An Uninvited Guest in the Meadow
This was quite a surprise today. The sun was up, and I was taking my morning stroll around the Meadow. I looked up because I heard some scurrying. The other day, I heard something similar, but I assumed it was birds.
I'll definitely be more careful before sticking my hands into the fruit trees.

How Are The Bananas Growing 4 Years Later?
Просмотров 35716 часов назад
Our garden is in Zone 9B, in Northeast Florida. And while we planted this banana circle 4 years ago, we had our first bananas within 18 months, but it's been slow going every since. I suspect it is because we've not done a great job separating the new pups from the mother, but still, I'm very happy. If I had to estimate it, we have more than 30 banana plants growing here. And now we have 5 diff...

He's just trying to get a breakfast snack. The females are usually pretty docile but those males can be rascals!
He was gonna wait there until all the fruit was ripe..lol
LOL. You may be right.
Apart from lemon grass tea and the aroma what are the uses for it. Is it just decorative.
Great question. It is a staple in Thai cuisine and probably other Asian dishes too.
Thank you
@@lahusa6866 you're welcome.
Michelle. I lLove your t-shirt. and I love your channel. So authentic ❤️
Oh poor thing.. he's been up there all night!❤❤❤
Just sitting there scared. I try to be understanding. 😉
So glad I saw this! Ants are my best Luffa pollinator
Glad I could help. Ants are amazing helpers.
What kind of persimmon tree is that?
That is a variety of Fuyu Persimmons.
How'd you connect the rod across the top?
Great question. The connectors were a part of the hoop kit.
Way way way to high
Too tall or too pricy?
How hard would it be to store the Garden in Minutes grids? I love the idea, but they would quickly rot in my high-altitude area with harsh winters. I would need to disconnect them and bring them in the garage.
Once assembled, they don't come back apart easily, but they are only 1 inch thick if you had a wall to hang or lean.
Do you know what brand of hose you have? My mom has tiny arthritic hands. That hose would be PERFECT for her!
Great question. I think I picked it up at Ace. I'm going there tomorrow and I'll look. Thanks for asking.
The next bed over there is a little thing on the side, that kind of looks like a tiny solar panel or sensor. What is that?
That is a solar light from Vego Garden. You can find them through my affiliate link: michelleinthemeadow.com/vego
On one of your raised beds you have some sort of container on the side, it is white with a green lid. What is it and where did you get it?
That is a garden toolbox from Vego Garden. You can find them through my affiliate link: michelleinthemeadow.com/vego thank you.
Tell me about the tree cover. Where did you get it? I bought a house with a mulberry bush, the birds get them ALL and then leave purple poop everywhere.
I bought those on Amazon. And some others. This is the larger one im thrilled with the results. Evoio 6 x 7 FT Large Fruit Tree... www.amazon.com/dp/B0CQ7HFHF5?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
@@michelleinthemeadow With Zippers! Brilliant! I thought about buying netting and wrapping the bush, but then I can't harvest the fruit as it ripens either. A zippered cover will be perfect! I ordered one for next year. Thanks!
@@alicias9928 you're welcome. Please let us know how it works out.
What a great hack!
Thanks. Now Mom is ready to borrow it too. Win, win.
That’s amazing! I’m wondering how they taste, too.
I can't wait to find out. Squeee.
Wow im so excited for you. So cool, do a taste test when they get ripe.👍🏼😃
Great idea!
Those are both sweet potatoes. A yam is similar to yucca
Thanks for weighing in. This is a variety called Discorea Alata. Happy Gardening.
@michelleinthemeadow what you just referred to is a purple yam! In during the holidays you have sweet potatoes and yams! There 5 variations of sweet potatoes! Yams that we know are 1!
Thanks.
@michelleinthemeadow thank you for responding! I want to build your channel up because your responsive idk if I'm 100 % right I was looking online yesterday about sweet potatoes and yams. And I seen so many diff variations! I'm still confused. I did see a yam it from Africa and Asia and it didn't look like the ones I was used too only reason I said what I said!
Everyone support this channel! She takes the time to respond and posts cool things! Let's get her to 1 mil followers! Everyone like, comment and subscribe!
Planted mine a few weeks ago but will be cross pollinating with honeynut butternut for next few years worth of seed
Thanks for sharing. I've read that cross pollinating some varieties produce toxic results. I don't have any further knowledge on that, but it could be worth researching if you haven't already. Good luck, we'd love to know how that turns out.
I love your resourcefulness in setting up the various structures to make it easy for you to assemble the panels. Thanks for this thorough explanation.
Thanks for watching. I'm glad it was helpful.
No WILD Hedgehogs live in North or South America. UK YES. Iguanas are mostly in SOUTH FL!! The cats feel safer higher up.
Thank you 😊
Could you try the Vegega Trellis and see how it is? The cattle panel is way too unwieldy for me by myself.
Possibly next year, I'll need to look into it a more.
Did you ever try VEGEGA ones? Don't you have SAND as a base being in FL?
I haven't tried that brand. Our dirt in my location is a bit more clay than sand, likely due to our high water table and proximity to woodlands and creek.
What about RUST? Did you put in the supports?
I did put in supports, but we accidentally laid logs across them. Oops. In the newest version of the Birdies, I'm not seeing any rust vin the older version they were using different screws.
Thank you! We purchased a top of the line hose and the pressure knocked the tip off. Because of your tutorial we were able to keep our hose which had nothing else wrong with it.
That's fantastic. So glad it helped!
I went out to check my garden yesterday and had a snake wrapped in the top of my Okra plants. It was about three foot.... I came back in the house and told my husband that I was done with gardening..😅 your black tubing looks very similar to the snake... you've done an awesome job with the water system. 😊
Thank you! Eek on the snake.
@michelleinthemeadow someone told me to get a turkey, and then I'd have no problems with snakes... lol, I guess they are snake killers...
@myheartcries9906 and remember the snakes are excellent ratters, so maybe you have a mouse problem??
@@michelleinthemeadow eek..... 😳
Thanks for the video, Michelle! We just installed some drip irrigation, too. It's fun to see different approaches
You're welcome. There are so many different ways to make it work. How did you set yours up?
@michelleinthemeadow We added a zone valve to our grass irrigation system to automate. We used the exact same clearance elbows and tees from the big box store, a pressure 25 psi regulator, and several types of emitters (micro sprayers, drippers, misters, and mini rotary sprinkler heads)
Nice. That would be a really great idea for my garden. Hmmmm. Thank you.
Yep stick with the same brand. For me it's greenworks. Yep I usually learn the hard way about everything. Lemongrass is dang sharp. Lemongrass tea is awesome. You can also make infused olive oil with it too. My son uses it for his eggs every day.👍🏼😁
Ooh. Lemongrass oil. That sounds delish!
This does seem like an easy way to manage lemon grass plants. One reason I haven't planted any for awhile is the work involved in keeping them under control.. Maybe I will rethink including them again.
So glad this was useful. I can see me breaking the shears out for other things, too. Thanks for watching.
You won't ever find a snake in lemongrass. The don't like the strong aroma of it and don't like slithering through its sharp leaves.
That's excellent news! Thanks.
I use Harbor Freight welding gloves for my sticky yard work. They almost go up to to your elbow.
Great Tip! Thanks!
no volume did you forget your mic or maybe you need a new one???? looks good though those clippers did a great job!!!
Hey Heather. I'm not sure why the volume isn't working for you. What kind of device do you watch on? Thank you for watching.
So, 8 weeks later it’s rusting???
Yes, but by design. This style is made from.corten steel and not the rolled galvanized materials coated for rust prevention. Thank you.
Hey Michelle, I’m getting ready to plant Seminole pumpkin seeds too. This will be my first time growing them. I’ve been watching other RUclips videos about how to grow them. The vines grow very big and long and take up a lot of space! If all 9 of your seeds germinate and grow, you will have a ton of pumpkins! Good luck 🧡
That's awesome! Thanks for sharing that. I'll be ready 😉
first of all you speak it is in the wrong place it should have been closer to the bottom it would have had more pressure second of all you need to raise that Barrel off the ground at least a foot or two because water only flows one way that's downhill
Thanks for weighing in. Happy Gardening 😊
Amazing harvest! We tried currant tomatoes this year and used those in our salads. I think need up roasting most of the cherry tomatoes on the grill, then made Dal and rice with them. Add a chopped up, garden fresh zucchini and/or yellow crookneck and a handful of fresh spinach.
That's a great idea! I'll try that soon! Thanks.
Everything is looking great Michelle, and I love what you did in the back along the trees there with the beds. You’re not the only one that can over water, I killed a couple things that way. Have you considered burlap around the poles for your cucumbers? I have some for the trunks of small trees but think it might also work as a grippy surface on your pipes. I’ve got dragon fruit that I’m trimming as well and starting more plants, cantaloupe and watermelon in bloom, and plans for three sisters. It’s extremely hot here in Phx, hoping our monsoon season will at least bring cooler temps, but some rain would be much appreciated too.
Thank you. I like that burlap idea. Thank you. We are finally getting some much needed rain. Good luck on your rain, too. Happy Gardening!
Such a great harvest, everything looks amazing! For an abundance of tomatoes: I ALWAYS make creamy tuscan chicken pasta! A lot of people use sun-dried tomatoes, but I love it with fresh! Chicken, cherry tomatoes, cheese, cream, spinach or kale, ... and a side salad? One of my favorite meals!
Thanks for the tips! Sound yummy!
Good job Michele. I can't wait to see them progress. I shoul try Seminole pumpkins - I wonder how they would do in the "winter".
I bet they'd be OK. Thank you!
Thanks for the link to Cody Cove seeds! Local seeds just do so much better in Florida. We have a batch of Seminole Pumpkins almost ready for harvest. They went in early March along with a few pineapple tops that are almost ready as well. Yes, the cherry, currant, and plum tomatoes have been yielding non-stop for months but finally slowing down now. Next thing you know it'll be time to get ready for the Fall season.
You're welcome. Yeah, it is almost time for fall seed starting. Time flies.
Great idea for the worms. They can roam free. Im experiencing the same with my raised beds not staying wet. More mulch!! I wonder.if the Seminole pumpkin would work in Illinois.
Hmmm. I wonder if they would. Maybe 😉 I have to get some worms next. LOL.
I can’t believe the variety you have in your garden. You make me want to try okra now 🤣
Hi...new subbie here, thanks for sharing. Great garden harvest and thanks for the pickleworm trick 😊
Welcome subbie 😀 Glad to help. It's pretty effective, and we get to keep the cukes, too.
I had to put an electric fence around my garden in Florida to deter the raccoons. I'm sure they will have a feast on my sweet corn while I am gone, when the weeds ground out the fence and the coons figure it out - they are smart little critters! I usually eat most of my tomatoes fresh but I did can quite a bit of crushed tomatoes and sauce this year from my Florida garden so the pantry is getting pretty well stocked for the off season. Nice haul Michele! I planted a few Shishitos this year but didn't get much before I left. I'm sure the raccoons will enjoy them.
Awesome haul.
Thanks!
I wanted to tell you that the last time i was at Solomon"s , they had hundreds of bolts of mesh or (tool, i know the spelling is wrong but i hope you get it), at $2:00 for the whole bolt. If you know anyone that sews, you could make the tree/bush covers for cheap. Just FYI. Great harvest!!!
Thanks for the tip. I've always wanted to check that place out. We are getting daily rain now to the West, so things are finally popping.
I use my tomatoes in fresh salsas and I make a cherry tomato and turmeric curry sauce that is great either vegetarian or with chicken. You can add a little of those spicy peppers into it as well.
Sounds yummy. Curries are my favorite!
Makes me hungry ! Great looking veggies !
Thank you! The stuffed peppers were delicious 😋
I made tomato and basil soup one year! It was the best soup!!!MM!
Oh yum! Oooh I need to look up my tomato and bean soup recipe. Hmmmm. Thank you@
The nature tax is a real thing lol. Im still waiting for my first full size tomato. My micros have been giving me one or 2. Oll be living vicariously through you for another month. 🎉 I make a bunch of salsa. Lately im getting into indian food. Seems to use up a fair amount of tomatoes.
It's is so real. You are welcome to live vicariously, I do the same with your worm bins. Salsa. Great idea. Hmmmm. Indian food. Yum!
