I'm so excited to share that we finally have soil in our Birdies raised garden beds! I've started transplanting a few plants and wanted to bring you along while I plant some more and show you what's growing.
It took a lot of planning to get to this point. We moved beds around until we found the perfect arrangement. Now, I've got a cattle panel set up between the beds. Many of you have asked how I attach it, but I don't-nature and gravity do the job!
We did have a bit of a mishap and scratched up one of the beds while setting things up, but it's just cosmetic. If you plan to do something similar, you might want to protect your beds to avoid scratches.
It's almost June, but we can still plant here in Florida. Today, I'm planting Royal Burgundy beans in one of the beds. I also have some okra saved from before that I'll plant along the edge. My hope is that the tall okra plants will provide some shade for the tomatoes in the hot afternoon sun.
Speaking of tomatoes, they’ll be growing up on the trellis. I planted a few a bit late, so they're not looking great right now, but we'll see how they do. In the cedar bed, I've started sweet potatoes. I'm using vines from another area, planting, covering, and watering them. I also have some slips with roots that I'll plant here.
Last week, I planted some okra at one end of the bed, and we already have our first sprout! I'm trying to be better about rotating different plants around the garden to keep things healthy.
Thanks for joining me on this gardening journey. Happy planting!

    About Michelle In The Meadow
I'm growing on a 1/4 acre suburban lot. I started gardening here 4 years ago and am glad you are here.
We have more than 80 individual fruit trees and shrubs and more than a dozen different kinds of annuals growing on this property. The slopes make for some interesting ways to garden, but we're trying to make the best of it.
On the first Sunday evening of each month (7PM Eastern), I go live on RUclips sharing updates and answering your questions.

Here is Sarasota we are experiencing quite a drought. May we get rain!
P.S. We can plant Egyptian, Malabar and New Zealand spinach now.

It's been tough here, too, with rain. Those are freaking spinach varieties. Whoohooo.

Yaaayyy! The meadow is looking so good! The tomatoes will be huge and full in no time! What is your favorite way to use okra? I haven't found a recipe that I love yet.

      I can hardly wait.
I love okra every way I've tried. Small and raw on an appetizer tray, fried, stewed with tomatoes, gumbo. All the ways 😉

Hello from Texas! Congrats on pushing the timing window. I hope they do well. I got my okra out a few weeks ago (why not, it was hot) and today planted rat's tailed radish seeds. Otherwise my tomatoes and peppers are still rolling in. The yard long beans are starting to produce well. I have asparagus peas growing but they are not flowering yet.

Wow, you got it, "growing on." I put out other seeds too last week ... eggplant, Daikin, and even greens. Time will tell. 😉 thanks for sharing.

Oh good job Michelle, the beds look great - the height is super awesome. In south central Alaska Memorial Day is the date that you put your annuals out - harden them first. I did a lot of planting today - the Sunday before Mem Day - and hope that we have enough sun and warm enough this summer for veggies. I start everything in a big grow tent that takes up our garage - I think our neighbors may think was have a cannabis grow op -

Thank you. LOL on the grow setup, but that's a great idea, though. Fingers crossed on warmth. Do the longer daylight hours in summer help??
